The “flow desk” as it's often called on the sell-side is about repeatability and scale in the service of institutional clients. It's a competitive business with not a lot of margin for error, especially in a product like equity options where being on the wrong side of a misbehaving Greek could spell trouble. With this in mind, it was great to welcome Ali Samadi, Head of Flow Equity Derivative Sales at Nomura Securities International to the podcast. Our conversation explores aspects of the salesperson / client interaction that make a relationship stick. Namely, Ali suggests that first and foremost, one must understand the client's objective and tailor the coverage experience accordingly. As a derivatives expert, he sees opportunities to utilize the volatility surface not just in the construction of trades, but also as a source of information, as it may provide clues as to where investor interest is concentrated. We also talk about addressing the inherent negative selection risk for a sell-side desk. This includes the inevitable need to manage client expectations on what size can be transacted at a given price, especially when markets turn especially illiquid as they did on August 5th.Lastly, we spend some time talking about training younger professionals, a pursuit Ali is passionate about. He believes the best way to help junior colleagues advance is to have them review trades in order to develop a sense as to what the right price is. Along with this, he encourages those in the early parts of their careers to diversify their skill sets, learning at least something about other products and assets classes. I hope you enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my conversation with Ali Samadi.

Japan's economy was seen as something of a juggernaut in the post World War II era, with growth averaging about 10% during the 1950s and 60s. Yet, in subsequent decades, with a stock market crash, and the bursting of a real estate bubble, Japan entered a period of stagnation and deflation, from which it is only now emerging. What drove Japan's rapid post-war growth? Why did growth stall, and reverse? And are there lessons from the Japanese experience relevant to the U.S. economy today? Paul Sheard joins EconoFact Chats to discuss these questions. Paul has been a Professor at Osaka University and a visiting scholar at the Bank of Japan, and at Stanford University. Hideyuki Takahashi is the Chairman of State Street Japan, an American financial services and bank holding company.   Mr. Takahashi established his career at Nomura Securities where he stayed for 21 years, becoming an Executive Account Manager for retail business and eventually moving on to manage international business. Mr. Takahashi has experience living and working globally in places including Australia, England, Amsterdam, Luxemburg, and Frankfurt through Nomura.   When in Amsterdam and Luxemburg, Mr. Takahashi built his sales team from zero, starting from the recruiting process, hiring many local workers. Mr. Takahashi says he made sure that he clearly communicated there were no division in how the local and Japanese hires were treated in his team of six people in the beginning. He explains that the most essential aspect of building a team and delivering results is defining the goal and planning out how it can be achieved, as well as the reward. Mr. Takahashi says his experience working in Australia and London enabled him to manage the international team who tend to be more assertive than Japanese workers.   As the CEO of Nomura Bank Deutschland, Mr. Takahashi led an organization with 300 staff and was first tasked with the role of restructuring, eliminating certain sections, and dealing with litigation matters. Mr. Takahashi recalls this as a tough experience, and required him to be very decisive, without any compromise. He wishes he had been better with constantly and clearly sharing information including his vision and direction of the company as a leader. For example, having a town-hall meetings in addition to communicating in smaller groups.   When in London, Mr. Takahashi was the European Equity Division Head. There, he managed a team of approximately 150 people. Mr. Takahashi initially struggled due to his English skills as his team were mostly English speakers and found the speed of communication to be very fast. When Mr. Takahashi arrived in New York as the COO, and then CEO, he was now leading over 1400 people. He noticed in New York, his staff were very vocal and quick to speak their mind. He recalls working with this team to be “very tough but at the same time, very simple” since there was constant clear communication and everybody was treated equally.   After 7 years in New York, Mr. Takahashi returned to Japan as the Global Head of Internal Audit of Nomura Group for a year and a half, then moved on to become Global Head of Research to integrate Lehman Brothers' and Nomura's research organization. There, he led a team of approximately 1000 people. Mr. Takahashi explains leading a team of researcher was a challenging experience, as they are highly intelligent and in a specialized discipline with a clearly set career path. After his time at Global Research, Mr. Takahashi then moved to corporate communication with non-Japanese media for a year and a half. Mr. Takahashi finally moved into State Street where he currently is the Chairman.   On increasing workplace engagement, Mr. Takahashi advises to clearly outline and communicate the vision and goal of the company, as well as the benefit of each individual joining the team. He adds the importance of clearly defining the role and accountability of each person. In large organizations, Mr. Takahashi points out having a strong and trustworthy middle management team is essential. It is crucial to train these middle management staff to make sure they understand the leader's vision and goals so that they can consistently communicate the same message to the rest of the team. Giving people accountability and letting them know what they will gain from the work they are doing and the future prospect is also important to keep them engaged and motivated. With Japanese people, Mr. Takahashi explains they need to be encouraged to speak up, but once they gain the confidence, they will be more likely to communicate their ideas openly.   On advice to foreigners leading in Japan, Mr. Takahashi advises to be mindful when recruiting people to understand that Japanese people have a tendency to not communicate their strengths clearly as English-speaking people. He recommends not jumping to the conclusion that people who cannot market themselves well are incapable and encourages seeing the real value of the more traditional Japanese staff. Secondly, Mr. Takahashi advises to stay committed to the job, as people will not trust managers who leave in a short period of time. Thirdly, Mr. Takahashi advises that in business, it is wiser to use one's own language to clearly communicate the message.   Mr. Takahashi defines leadership as a very strong conviction of one's own vision and the ability to communicate that with others, as well as winning in business.

There’s little question that 2020 will long be remembered as a year of crisis for the casino industry. Commercial gaming revenues in the U.S. were down 79 percent during the second quarter when compared to Q2 2019, a fact that made IAC/Interactive’s August announcement that it was purchasing 12 percent of hospitality and gambling giant MGM all the more headline-grabbing. “We think we found a once-in-a-decade opportunity to find a meaningful position in an iconic brand,” explains IAC/InterActive CFO Glenn Schiffman, who says IAC’s balance sheet remains flush with cash (more than $3 billion) after the recent spinoff of online dating site Match.com. “We believe that Las Vegas will come roaring back, and this comes back to how IAC likes to invest: We like massive addressable markets with tailwinds from offline to online, and that’s what we see with gaming,” says Schiffman, who is no stranger to industries in crisis. Back in September of 2008, Schiffman was head of investment banking for Lehman Brothers’ Asia-Pacific business when the firm filed for bankruptcy due to its part in the subprime mortgage crash. Schiffman, along with other top Lehman partners, helped to manage the sale of Lehman’s Asian business to Nomura Securities. “In times of crisis, you have to separate the urgent from the important because in a crisis everything appears urgent but not everything is important,” explains Schiffman, who says that he learned just how important being able to separate the two was when the clock was ticking in the wake of the Lehman bankruptcy and his team was seeking a resolution that would best serve Lehman’s Asia workforce. (Episode 440) “We saved every single job in Asia—and that was 3,000 jobs, including my own,” comments Schiffman, who adds that the Lehman bankruptcy, among other things, revealed how during a time of crisis an individual’s character becomes more evident. “Crisis doesn’t define character, crisis reveals character,” says Schiffman, who, after joining Nomura, went on to help establish and build the bank’s North American investment banking division. –Jack Sweeney

In the episode, Hertrich said those earnings pressures could remain in place for many banks, prompting them to consolidate branches — particularly in light of increased digital adoption — and pursue M&A activity.

As the special Crisis Series within the Alpha Exchange continues, it was a pleasure to catch up with former colleague, George Goncalves.  A 20 year veteran on both the buy-side and sell-side, George most recently led the Fixed Income Strategy effort at Nomura Securities. Our discussion considers the post GFC regulatory landscape that emerged in the US Treasury market and how, over time, the Street’s capacity to bear risk was compromised even as the government’s appetite to run larger deficits grew.  George walks through how we got to September of 2019, when repo market disruption fired a loud warning shot that market plumbing was vulnerable to crack. The increased prominence of the relative value investor, whose strategies are short liquidity and volatility, has figured prominently in the breathtaking explosion of volatility in the risk-free complex and the resulting role the Fed has needed to play to support market functioning.  Looking forward, George sees the potential that rates are headed lower still, but, given the degree of government capital directed towards the economic sudden stop, ultimately see value in inflation protected securities like TIPS.  Thanks for listening and be safe.

This is your daily roundup for Wednesday, October 2, 2019.  Coinbase will start paying users 1.25% on USDC holdings, six Japan brokerages formed an STO association, and Parity Technologies released Parity Signer v3.0. ☕Buy me a coffee: https://glow.fm/mota Zuckerberg Addresses Libra KYC Concerns According to leaked comments from an internal Facebook meeting in July, CEO Mark Zuckerberg addressed Libra KYC concerns voiced by employees. From a transcript posted by the Verge, Zuckerberg stated “The public things, I think, tend to be a little more dramatic, but a bigger part of it is private engagement with regulators around the world, and those, I think, often are more substantive and less dramatic.” Zuckerberg admitted that the company has more work to do in dealing with money laundering and anti-terrorist financing. Japan Brokerages Form STO Association Six major Japanese brokerages, including Nomura Securities and Daiwa Securities have formed the Japan STO Association, a self-regulatory organization (SRO) for STOs. The association will devise rules and guidelines for issuance and will take on lobbying duties to develop security tokens as a product in the country. Earlier this year, Japan’s Act on Settlement of Funds and the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act were amended to regulate the sale of tokens. Under the new legislation, security tokens will be considered interests in a collective investment scheme, and buyers will have the right to receive distributions from the business of the issuer. The new regulations will be enforced once implementing orders and ordinances are issued by Japan’s Financial Services Agency. Coinbase USDC Holdings Pays 1.25% Coinbase has announced that it will pay an annual percentage yield (APY) of 1.25 percent on holdings of it’s USDC stablecoin. Coinbase users with at least one USDC in their account will automatically begin to accrue rewards on their holdings, paid monthly. Coinbase director of product Max Branzburg said the initiative will be financed from different pre-existing Coinbase revenue streams. He stated “We can pull from the profits we generate as a business to reward our customers for storing their assets on the platform. We’re fortunate to be able to do that as a profitable business.” Branzburg mentioned the possibility of a future program for other cryptocurrencies on the exchange. Parity Signer v3.0 Parity Technologies has released a new version of Parity Signer, a mobile application that turns old smartphones into hardware wallets. This app is meant to be used on a dedicated smartphone that is to be kept offline at all times. Parity Signer lets users generate or restore Kusama and Ethereum accounts and safely sign transactions without ever being connected to the internet. Offline, or “air-gapped,” wallets provide a simple form of protection from hackers and malware attacks. Parity suggests that smartphones running the app be kept on airplane mode at all times. For all accounts, users will receive a recovery phrase and choose a “pin” to sign transactions. Although the app’s code was part of Parity’s Trail of Bits audit, the company strongly suggests to use the app with caution and only store small amounts. Xpring Releases SDK Ripple’s Xpring is releasing an SDK for developers to integrate XRP apps and Ripple’s Interledger Protocol (ILP) in multiple programming languages. BitPay, mobile wallet BRD and digital custody provider Anchorage are all adding XRP support. Xpring, is the investment arm of Ripple, building a network of companies and use-cases around XRP.

He started his career at Nomura Research Institute, where he led Nomura Securities’ equity trading technology team. Yoshimasa is a member of CFA Society Japan. He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree of engineering from the University of Tsukuba. In this episode, Yoshimasa shares his worst investment ever story. He did not use his time horizons to plan his goals in life. He did not contemplate on thinking about his future. Instead, he worked so hard doing jobs he did not like at first. It was a good thing that later on, he took the leap to learn and exposed himself to the financial management industry which is his interest.    “You have to find your own career path. Find the best one for yourself and live your own best life.” - Yoshimasa Satoh     What do you want to hear from the My Worst Investment Ever Podcast? Tell us here!   Resources:  My Worst Investment Ever Book   myworstinvestmentever.com     Topics Covered:  00:57 – Yoshimasa Satoh’s professional and personal background 02:22 – Yoshimasa shares his worst investment ever story not investing his time for himself early on in his life 06:04 – Lessons that Yoshimasa learned from the experience, knowing what you really want to do and creating a long-term career plan for yourself 07:20 – Andrew’s breakthrough story with her sister, doing the things we are good at and doing the things we like and what we enjoy 11:37 – Yoshimasa’s actionable tip to avoid people from going through the same pain   Main Takeaways Lesson 1: To keep always be looking for the things you enjoy. For work and in like and try to pursue those. Not from an extent that you are always going to be happy, but you’d be doing the things you enjoy, rather than just making money from the things you did not enjoy. Investing in yourself is the best return on investment you can have. It may be investing in learning a new skill, personal and professional development or pursuing your passion. You need to give time to yourself so you can align your plan and achieve the life you want to live. Lesson 2: To focus on your future. You should always be writing your plans. It is like driving a car. When you are diving a car, you’ve got to look down and you’ve got to also look up. You just can’t focus on what is right in front of you. Or you’ll eventually crash. Lesson 3: Think of long-term. If companies are short-term focused, that gives a great opportunity for those companies that are long-term focused. So do not be afraid to take a long-term view, in your personal and professional life. It is not always going to be popular. But I can tell you over time you can win.   You can also check out Andrew’s books How to Start Building Your Wealth Investing in the Stock Market My Worst Investment Ever 9 Valuation Mistakes and How to Avoid Them Transform Your Business with Dr.Deming’s 14 Points   Connect with Yoshimasa Satoh Linkedin Twitter   Connect with Andrew Stotz: astotz.com Linkedin Facebook Instagram Twitter Youtube My Worst Investment Ever Podcast
