The “flow desk” as it's often called on the sell-side is about repeatability and scale in the service of institutional clients. It's a competitive business with not a lot of margin for error, especially in a product like equity options where being on the wrong side of a misbehaving Greek could spell trouble. With this in mind, it was great to welcome Ali Samadi, Head of Flow Equity Derivative Sales at Nomura Securities International to the podcast. Our conversation explores aspects of the salesperson / client interaction that make a relationship stick. Namely, Ali suggests that first and foremost, one must understand the client's objective and tailor the coverage experience accordingly. As a derivatives expert, he sees opportunities to utilize the volatility surface not just in the construction of trades, but also as a source of information, as it may provide clues as to where investor interest is concentrated. We also talk about addressing the inherent negative selection risk for a sell-side desk. This includes the inevitable need to manage client expectations on what size can be transacted at a given price, especially when markets turn especially illiquid as they did on August 5th.Lastly, we spend some time talking about training younger professionals, a pursuit Ali is passionate about. He believes the best way to help junior colleagues advance is to have them review trades in order to develop a sense as to what the right price is. Along with this, he encourages those in the early parts of their careers to diversify their skill sets, learning at least something about other products and assets classes. I hope you enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my conversation with Ali Samadi.

In a world bubble for the Alpha Exchange podcast, the words vol, carry and convexity would be prominent. And in this episode, featuring Amy Wu Silverman, the Head of Equity Derivatives Strategy at Royal Bank of Canada, we dive into these concepts head on. First, we learn about Amy's experience in structured rates when, in and around 2007, Fannie and Freddie were the go-to credit to which all kinds of complex instruments were attached.Reflecting on how wrong this ultimately went, she tells us that it often takes the experience of crisis to help us appreciate ways in which market realities can deviate violently from the textbook. We explore some of Amy's framework, which leans into the value of market prices in helping establish consensus and forming a starting point for investors to map their own distributions of outcomes versus that implied by the market. We then talk about option prices and market risk dynamics today with attention to the huge surge in NVDA and the impact on both option vol surfaces and passive indexation. Amy sees risk in the exceptionally narrow breadth that the surge in NVDA is part of.I hope you enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my conversation with Amy Wu Silverman.

U.S. equity indexes traded mixed Thursday, as investors priced in murky economic data and the reality that Jerome Powell's Federal Reserve shall not pivot from its inflation-fighting stance. “We think the CPI report was very important for the market,” said Eric Johnston, the Senior Managing Director and Head of Equity Derivatives and Cross Asset at Cantor Fitzgerald. “It showed that inflation does not magically come down and you can't get it under control with a soft landing, an unemployment rate below 4%, and the S&P 500 at 4,000.” Eric joins Andreas Steno Larsen for today's Daily Briefing to talk about why equities are holding up so well with global growth increasingly impaired and financial conditions more and more restrictive. Eric and Andreas also discuss key levels for major asset classes and positioning dynamics amid the many prevailing global geopolitical-macroeconomic crosscurrents. We also hear from Jason Trennert about the structural factors that will keep inflation higher for longer. I always thought it would be neat to interview someone, that is actually part of the organization that runs the Toronto Stock Exchange. Most of us have the majority of our retirement savings in ETFs or stocks and so it makes sense to actually have some understanding of the exchanges here in Canada, how they work, and the relationships that exist between the brokerage that you use to actually buy your investments, the stock exchange itself, and the governing bodies and regulators that are there to ensure that investors like you and I are protected. To help us with this, I have Richard Ho on the show. Richard works for the TMX Group, which is the organization that actually runs the Toronto Stock Exchange, the Montreal Exchange, and other exchanges that we'll learn about today, here in Canada. One of Richard's responsibilities, is leading educational initiatives to help improve investor education, for Canadians like you and I.  One of the educational initiatives that I wanted to really highlight, is that Richard and his team have put together a free to enter competition, with a $10,000 grand prize, and 7 weekly prizes of $500 each. The competition revolves around investing using options. If you've ever wanted to learn more about what options are, and how they can be used to make money, definitely listen to this episode, but also take part in this free competition as it's a risk-free trading simulation contest, with a lot of educational resources. The way that it works is that you have a virtual portfolio of $100k, and the question is: Can you strategize and trade options to earn the highest returns in hopes of winning the weekly cash prizes, a $10,000 grand prize and bragging rights as Canada's Top Options Trader?  The contest runs for 8-weeks and kicks off on September 19, 2022. You can register for free here. There's no entry fee, it's just good education on the subject, and a way that you can try options as a tool in your investment portfolio, without actually risking any of your own real money.  So good luck, and now let's get into the interview with Richard.  Our Expert Guest: I've invited Richard Ho, DMS, CAIA, FCSI, Director of Equity Derivatives and Customer Relationship Management at TMX Montréal Exchange, who is responsible for leading educational initiatives and partnerships with brokerage firms to discuss what makes this contest exciting, how it differs from past editions, and the educational component surrounding it.   Richard also collaborates on Option Matters, a Montréal Exchange blog whose mission is to help individuals increase their knowledge of the options market.  Resources Mentioned: You can enter the contest for free here (it runs from September 19th 2022 to November 11th 2022). More educational resources: Education on Options: optionmatters.ca Montreal Exchange Education Resources: m-x.ca/education Montreal Exchange Equity Derivatives & Options Education: m-x.ca/options The Montreal Exchange Main Site: m-x.ca/en The main TMX site (where all the Canadian exchanges are): tmx.com Questions Covered: To set the foundation, can you take us through the different exchanges here in Canada. For instance, most of us know about the Toronto Stock Exchange, but what are the other exchanges in Canada? and what do we need to know about them as Canadian investors? You are part of the TMX Group. Can you explain what the relationship is between the TMX Group, and these exchanges? And where can we go to learn more, for anybody that wants to dive deeper? Since the exchanges are such a critical component in Canada's economy and our personal retirement savings, how are investors protected? I imagine there is a lot of government regulation and monitoring? Options have become a very popular topic lately, yet most of us haven't been taught anything about them when in school. For somebody completely new to options, can you give us some detail on what options are, how they work, what type of investor they tend to be suited for, and where can we go to learn more about them? A lot of the investors on the show (myself included) are DIY, passive, total market index investors. Options seem like a tool that we can learn about and have in our arsenal, to use when needed.  What purpose can they serve for a passive do-it-yourself investor that typically just tries to buy the market as a whole using ETFs? And how much of a time commitment is it to learn how to do it properly? When it comes to the work that you and your team do, what are your actual goals or mandate? For instance, the TMX Group is a publicly traded company on the Toronto Stock Exchange, just like other for-profit companies, yet you don't actually sell anything to DIY Canadian investors like myself, and I noticed that your team also produces a lot of educational content for Canadian investors like optionmatters.ca, and you even do contests and competitions to encourage investor education. How does all that work? Can you tell us more about the free-to-enter competition that you have coming up? For anybody that maybe doesn't feel comfortable entering the competition yet, or is listening to this podcast episode months after the competition has already taken place, where can they go to learn more and access the different free investor education resources that you and the team have put together?  Can you take us through any basic options strategies that investors can try out, both during the contest and/or in real-life? Tell us again where we can go to access more of the free investor education tools that you have available, as well as where we can signup, for free, to the Options Trading Simulation Contest.

This week's Misfit Entrepreneur is Stephen Flood. Stephen is the founder and CEO of Goldcore, one of the oldest gold and silver dealers in the market today. The firm is responsible for over $1 billion in transactions and manages $300 million in assets for their clients. Stephen has an incredible story. After graduating college in Ireland, he left for New York with just a few hundred dollars in his pocket and made his way into finance, eventually working with Goldman Sachs as a Trader in Equity Derivatives. After having a lot of success, he followed his entrepreneurial spirit back to Ireland starting Goldcore in 2003. The company has been featured on just about every financial medium there is from CNBC to Bloomberg. But, what I love most about Stephen is that he's an entrepreneur at his core and I've asked him to come on and share the wisdom he's learned on his way to becoming a billion dollar CEO as well as his unique take on investing. www.GoldCore.com www.GoldintheUSA.com(Free Report on Gold Investing) Stephen's father died when he was 11. He learned early on how to take care of himself. And after going to college he knew he needed to follow his instincts and decided to go to New York where he go into finance. He loved his time in New York, but was always fascinated with technology and finance together. This helped in New York, but it also helped in finding creative solutions like he and his team have done at Goldcore. Everywhere Stephen has gone, he's been a disruptor and is driven by creating efficiencies. What made you leave Wall Street to start Goldcore? It wasn't in the plan. He had been there 7 years and planned to stay. He originally had planned to start his own firm. Then 9/11 happened. He was newly married and had an opportunity to exit Goldman and decided to travel the world with his wife. He witnessed 9/11 firsthand and was ready to move. After about a year, he found himself back in Ireland and joined an old friend to start Goldcore. What should people know about investing in gold and silver? Put 10% of your money into gold and hope it does not work! Gold is a risk off solution. It gains or holds when things get rough in the markets. It provides stability and financial insurance. It calms the mind of the investor so you have the insurance and can take advantage of the opportunity of a down market. Inflation is at 40-year highs, why hasn't made very large moves higher? At the 14 min mark, Stephen talks about the financial experiment of Quantitive Easing and money printing. Stephen talks about the gold price seeing intervention by larger institutions. The Cantillon Effect: You can print money and things look good initially, but eventually, it catches up with you and the money loses purchasing power and people start to dump it as they do not believe in it. Hard assets will appreciate in value. At the 18 min mark, Steven and I have a deeper discussion about central banking and about the monetary system in general. Explain how gold gives personal sovereignty… Having gold stored in a private storage facility is the closest thing you can have to personal sovereignty. It's like having your car parked in a garage that is storing it for you. It gives you an asset that you can access at any time. Thoughts on cryptocurrency? Blockchain is a revolutionary technology. It is huge leap forward. Bitcoin is not a really a currency and should not be treated like one. Money is power and the central banks will not allow Bitcoin to take that power – they will create their own and replace it. What are the key elements needed to succeed as an entrepreneur? Many entrepreneurs chase the exit and money, but it doesn't usually happen. If you can become the domain expert in your area, your chosen field. If you do that, you will do well successfully and monetarily. You must become the expert first and then the money will follow. You need to be truthful to yourself, your employees, and partners. Your team is critical and cannot be taken for granted. Show then a high degree of respect. “It is better to find right, than to be right.” Never stop learning…nothing is sacred. Biggest challenges and how did you overcome them? When they first started, gold was about $300/oz, and no one really cared about it. Then as the financial crisis came in and gold went down. At the time, the business was very transactional based and gold buying slowed down and their business slowed down for quite some time – they had an 80% drop in transactions. They learned the most on the way down. They also found a niche in storage which added stability. What is the benefit of storing things offsite vs. a safe at home? It is a client preference. For larger orders, it is easier. The benefits are that if you sell it very quickly vs. having it at home where you have to ship it in, etc. Storage is also insured by Lloyds of London. There is a chain of integrity for storage, so validation is automatic. If you take possession, it needs to be re-validated. www.GoldintheUSA.com for some good basics on gold. Main principles that you have used in building your business that have really stood out? Being honest and truthful. Humility is very important. Own it and take personal responsibility. Where do you see the economy going over the next year? Big bold call – there is going to be an event that had a major impact on the markets and economy. Commercial real estate is a place to watch. The FED is in an impossible situation and cannot raise rates meaningfully. There is desperation for yield and returns and it is a bubble.   Best Quote: It is better to find right, than to be right. Stephen's   Misfit 3: Take personal responsibility and own every outcome. Look after your mind, body, and soul. Be truthful to yourself and those around you.   Show Sponsors: Athletic Greens (Free Year Supply of Vitamin D and 5 Travel Packs) AthleticGreens.com/Misfit Ecom Automation Gurus (Save 15%) www.EcomAutomationGurus.com

In today’s show, Chris interviews Zack Kembar, Managing Director, Burke Norris Investments. As a student, Zack was admittedly laidback, disorganized, and thoroughly enjoying his time at Western University. However, all this changed with Student Works. As a Student Works manager, Zack ended up managing a team of 20 driven individuals. He shares how Student Works taught him some great lessons in organization, persistence, and time management.  When Zack graduated, the country was going through a recession which made it difficult for him to find the right job. So, Zack decided to change tracks and travel abroad - with the view to get into investment banking. And incredibly enough, he managed to get hired at Goldman Sachs in spite of having no business degree and zero prior experience. So how did Zack manage this feat? Zack regales listeners with his amazing story. When Zack discovered the investment banking niche that he was truly interested in, he went all out and devoted himself completely to learning new skill-sets.  Listeners will learn how Zack had to resort to some aggressive networking to find employment as a junior-level Goldman Sachs employee in Tokyo. He even stayed for a year with a local family so that he could learn Japanese. Eventually, he rose to the position of VP, Equity Derivatives. After Goldman Sachs, Zack worked as a Managing Director with Deutsche Bank in NY, followed by  BNP Paribas in Tokyo and Capstone Investment Advisors in Singapore . Currently, he is the managing director at Burke Norris Investments - a Toronto based Family Office.   Zack talks quite a bit about the importance of honing your sales skills. Good sales skills can help you in all walks of life. And having a full sales pipeline can help you pivot, and avoid failure when the going gets tough. Particularly, in this segment, we share how dogged determinedness is the key to success in sales. Other topics discussed in today’s show include ethics in investment banking, how to survive an economic crisis, and the importance of communication in an organization. Enjoy!  Resources Student Works  Chris Thomson LinkedIn Chris’s Email

The price of vol, in single stocks, in equity sectors and across asset classes is on the mind of Stuart Kaiser. Now the head of equity derivatives research at UBS, Stuart spends his time helping the firm’s institutional clients find value on both the long and short side of the derivatives market. Landing at Goldman Sachs a stone's throw away from the global financial crisis, Stuart developed his skill set by looking for opportunities in the single stock options market at a time of massive transition in implied volatility. During our conversation, we revisit the surge in option premia in US financials, from extremely low to unrecognizably high levels in a matter of a year.  In this context, Stuart shares his views on the vol risk premia, noting that it can sometimes be compelling to sell vol at low levels, especially when markets are trending in muted fashion as they did in 2017. As part of his process for supporting clients, Stuart continuously evaluates volatility surfaces.  He shares the process he uses, describing how he utilizes back-tests and how he arrives at points on the curve that carry best and are optimal in the context of the risks being hedged.  We also discuss 2018, a year book-ended by market disruption events of very different character that required unique trade construction in hedging.  Lastly, Stuart shares his framework for evaluating cross-asset risk factors and how he looks for warning signs that sister asset classes like FX and rates may send to equity investors.  Today, amidst a challenging environment for carrying options, he sees value in gold volatility.  Please enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my discussion with Stuart Kaiser.

At first blush, market volatility and fragility would appear to be two sides of the same coin. But for Ben Bowler and his global team at BAML, the last 5 years has uniquely seen muted overall daily volatility punctuated by occasional but extreme market outbursts. In Ben’s role as global head of derivative research, he has studied this period - one in which market kurtosis, that pesky 4th moment, has been substantially high. Perhaps owing to the conditioning wrought by the heavy hand of Central Banks, investors have, in Bowler’s rendering, increasingly competed for “dip Alpha”. Thus, the market’s growing tendency to lurch from calm to calamity as crowded positioning is unwound and then ultimately re-established once the Central Bank asserts its desire to see easier financial conditions. The result is a remarkable change in the character of market volatility post crisis. In addition to exploring the notion of market fragility, my conversation with Ben considers the volatility risk premium, the value of signals from the landscape of cross-asset vol, and the impact of vol selling on the market’s gamma profile and resulting level of realized index volatility. We also broadly discuss the impact of risk control funds, the speed with which exposures can be de-risked and the greater incidence of flash-crash type events. Ben's insights are excellent. I hope you enjoy this discussion as much as I did, my conversation with Ben Bowler on this episode of the Alpha Exchange.
