Jonathan Lehr of Work-Bench joins Nick to discuss IT and Enterprise Tech Investing, The Realities and Myths of PLG, and The Past and Future of NYC Tech. In this episode we cover: Walk us through your background and path to VC. Tell us a little more about the thesis at Work-Bench. On your website, you mention you invest in "seed and seed II" startups. What is a seed II? What sort of myths are there around PLG companies? How do you advise startups to price their products? Mark Suster recently Tweeted… "If you look at our industry, it's now awash with capital that requires every firm to get very focused on where its edge comes from. If you're not a bulge-bracket VC, choose your positioning wisely"(stage, sector, geography, founder access) … way too many firms are generic". What are your thoughts on the financing environment? You've been a part of the New York tech ecosystem for about a decade now. How has the tech scene evolved over the past 10 years or so? There was a dogma for a while that enterprise startups had to be built in Silicon Valley. Why do you think this is a mistaken belief? Missed a recent episode? On this week’s Tech Talk Radio, Emily Wright and Lucy Alderson bring you two podcasts from New York as Real Estate Tech week kicks off in the city. First up, Emily visited the new Sandbox space at the Zaha Hadid Residences to speak to Related Companies’ Greg Gushee about the launch of this tech education space. As the man behind the concept, Gushee said that he hopes other developers will follow suit and that a plethora of fresh, new maker spaces will emerge around the world. A dual space incorporating a public area as well as one reserved for residents at 520 West 28th Street in New York, Related Companies’ The Sandbox space has been created to help encourage people, and children in particular, to learn about all aspects of technology. “It’s like a Soho House for mad scientists in one way,” said Gushee. “But equally we want spaces like these to be open to everyone so we have our public area too.” Then Lucy met with Carlos Valverde, VP real estate development at Silverstein Properties to talk about bringing fresh tenants to the World Trade Center site, the power of tech and why developing in New York is a “headache.”
This week on Tech Talk Radio Sam McClary is back in the studio. EG's editor joins Emily Wright a week after the roaring success of the new look EG Awards where black tie was banned and light-up footwear positively encouraged. After an all-important awards round-up, our TTR co-hosts are joined by Evan Petitt, director of operations and events for MetaProp NYC. On this episode he gives a sneak peek into what delegates can expect at Mipim Proptech New York next month. Part of NYC Real Estate Tech Week, this will mark the fourth year since the event was launched as Petitt reveals who will be speaking and what has been added to the ever-evolving programme in 2019.

You can use the code MOMLIGHT for 15% off your first month's purchase. Now onto the show! This week I sat down with Ara Katz, mompreneur extraordinaire and a profoundly thoughtful and wise human to dive deep into the world of bacteria and particularly, our microbiome. Ara is the Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Seed, a consumer life science company pioneering applications of bacteria to improve human and planetary health. Seed (the consumer division of Seed Health, Inc.) develops broad spectrum and targeted consumer probiotics from strain-specific research validated in human clinical trials. Seed’s life science approach brings much-needed precision, efficacy and education to the rather unregulated global probiotics market. Ara’s breastfeeding experience led her to the microbiome and inspired a personal mission to bridge science and consumer health. A serial entrepreneur, Ara previously Co-Founded and served as CMO of mobile commerce marketplace, Spring (recently sold to Shoprunner), was on the Founding Team of social commerce company, BeachMint (sold to Conde Nast), advises various companies across health, tech, and consumer, including Violet Grey, Tamara Mellon and, Stadium Goods, which was recently acquired by FarFetch and is an angel investor to companies like Mahmee (women’s health startup) and Hong Kong-based ALLIES. Ara has been a fellow at the MIT Media Lab’s Center for Future Storytelling and CCA’s Design MBA program. She was named in Marie Claire’s “The New Guard: The 50 Most Influential Women in America”, listed on Business Insider’s “Silicon Alley Top 100” and “36 Rockstar Women in NYC Tech”, and was recently included in Create + Cultivate’s 100 List for STEM. Ara was the Founding Board Member of International Non-profit, I AM THAT GIRL, a community and movement for any badass young woman who is looking to find her purpose, lift her voice, and make positive change in her world. She lives in Venice, California with her husband and three-year-old son, Pax–without whom Seed wouldn’t exist. Oh, and she’s the proud owner of several tardigrades who now live at Harvard’s Museum of Natural History. You can follow Ara on instagram @arakatz @seed @seeduniversity
“We are, by definition, an ecosystem. The microbiome reveals a more connected biology, radically transforming our approach to medicine, hygiene, diet, and living.”Ara Katz & Raja DhirOur bodies are comprised of about ten trillion cells. But our microbiome — all the bacteria, viruses, and fungi that live in or on our bodies – outnumber human cells by a factor of 10.Indeed, we are far more microorganism than human. Moreover, rapidly developing science reveals the vast extent to which the nature of our personal microbiome drives not only our propensity for disease and digestive health, but also, quite surprisingly, can dictate our mental disposition, cognitive function, and even our specific food cravings.Today we take a magnifying glass to the mind-blowing netherworld of microbiota to illuminate their implications not just on human health, but the well-being of planet Earth at large. Our stewards for this fantastic voyage are Ara Katz and Raja Dhir, the co-founders of Seed, a venture backed microbiome company at the pioneering edge of bacteria science.Ara is a serial entrepreneur and fellow at the MIT Media Lab’s Center for Future Storytelling and CCA’s DesignMBA program. She was named one of the “50 Most Influential Women in America” by Marie Claire, listed on Business Insider’s “Silicon Alley Top 100” and “36 Rockstar Women in NYC Tech”, and was recently included in Create + Cultivate’s 100 List for STEM.One of the most knowledgeable people I have ever met when it comes to our rapidly evolving understanding of the microbiome, Raja is a life sciences entrepreneur and a member of the Microbiome Think Tank at Mass General Hospital. He sits on the editorial board for the scientific journal Microbiome as well as the advisory committee for the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics. In addition, he is a director and co-chair of the scientific advisory board for Micropia, a $20MM microbial ecology and education platform as well as the world’s first museum dedicated to microbes.Today we cover it all.First, we define the microbiome. We discuss the difference between prebiotics and probiotics. And to cut through the consumer confusion fomented by gut health commodification, we separate fact from fiction by examining the difference between an effective priobiotic and the countless food and supplement products simply marketed as such. Most importantly, we explore what the latest science tells us about the power of microbes to heal our bodies, positively impact childhood development, reinvigorate the quality of our soil and improve the overall ecology of Planet Earth — including some amazing work Ara & Raja are doing with bee populations.Seed Offer: As a simple thanks for listening, Ara & Raja have a gift for you. Rigorously evidence-based, I’ve been using this product for the last several months to great effect. However, I have zero financial involvement with the company. Seed is not a show sponsor. Mayor Bloomberg likes to take credit for transforming New York City into the second biggest technology economy in the country. Does he deserve it? Silicon Alley power players are certainly willing to give the mayor some major kudos: They respect the man that built his own tech enterprise — the Bloomberg terminal — into a multibillion-dollar empire. This week New Tech City talks to New York's software developers, engineers and startup CEOs about the impact of having an "entrepreneur-in-chief" running City Hall for 12 years. Overall, Mayor Bloomberg gets a glowing review from residents of Silicon Alley. But when it comes to the nuts and bolts of how and why the city's tech sector has grown, there's room for debate.
