Get Back/Let It Be-sessies. As a songwriter, I could never imagine at this point in my life, putting out song a wrote at 16 or 17. I don't ever want anyone to hear that. But then again, I'm not the Beatles. who were able to resurrect one of the earliest songs in their repertoire, from well before they were even The Beatles. Though the song was in their early setlists for a long time, it never found a home on a Beatles record, even after taking a shot at recording it in 1963. But when nostalgia reared it's head during the Let It Be sessions, this song came back to the fore, and with Billy Preston in tow, it found a new life a scorching little rock song that fit the bill for the Get Back project perfectly. It's the most rocking moment of the whole month, and in their performance on the rooftop that day, for a couple of minutes, you see these world-weary men return back to the young, hopeful, driven boys they were when they first started. Even if the song has no real meaning, it's a fantastic moment with real electricity to it. Joining us this week are Allison and Erika from BC The Beatles, one of our favorite Beatles podcasts. We chat about their own Beatles journeys, the Beatles' invention of meta-nostalgia, Paul's sock game, Cruisin' Classics, and much more! 10 Reasons WHY the Seals, Trumpets, and Bowls Unfold Sequentially (i.e., Consecutively)

Dr. Alan Kurschner, in his last episode, gave the context to the unfolding of the seals, trumpets, and bowls. In today's episode, Dr. Kurschner outlines 10 reasons against the concurrent-recapitulatory interpretation of the book of Revelation while arguing for the consecutive-progressive framework. Seals, Trumpets, Bowls – At the Same Time or One After the Other? Consecutive-Progressive The prewrath position interprets a sequential chronological framework for the seals, trumpets, and bowls. That is, the seal-trumpet-bowl septets (sets of seven) will happen in a consecutive-progressive fashion, with each septet consecutively following each other. For example, the trumpet septet cannot begin until the seventh seal is opened; and the bowl septet cannot begin before the seventh trumpet is blown. The last judgment element of the day of the Lord's wrath will be the seventh bowl. Accordingly, the seventh seal and the seventh trumpet serve as transitions to the next set of God's climaxing judgments, culminating with the seventh bowl. Concurrent-Recapitulation Posttribulationists subscribe instead to a concurrent-recapitulation framework with the septets occurring at the same time with the judgment elements giving different emphases or perspectives. For example, it is said that the sixth seal, sixth trumpet, and sixth bowl describe the same event from a different angle. Accordingly, the last element in the day of the Lord's wrath describes the seventh of each septet; thus, the seventh seal, seventh trumpet, and seventh bowl are the same event from different perspectives. And there are those posttribulationists who hold that it does not describe the exact same event, but they affirm that the three elements occur roughly at the same time. For all practical purposes, the main point is that both of these posttrib interpretations do not view the trumpets and bowls occurring after the seventh seal is opened. It is noted that this debate does not hinge on whether each judgment element within the septets succeed each other; that is not the issue. The main question is: Do each of the three septets themselves succeed each other (consecutive) or do they simultaneously unfold (concurrent)? Dr. Kurschner's aim is to demonstrate that the concurrent view is flawed. He argues for the consecutive nature of the three septets, showing that the seventh seal does not depict the culmination but the introduction to the day of the Lord via the seven trumpets and culminating in the seven bowls. Why Recapitulation? There are two main observations from the book of Revelation that lead posttribulationists to conclude the concurrent-recapitulation theory is correct. First, they will point out that the septets possess a similar structure, thinking these depict the same events with different emphases. They draw attention to at least two observations: (1) the first four elements of each septet share a structured unit, and (2) the first two septets, the seals and trumpets, each contain a parenthetical section between the sixth and seventh element. However, this is a non sequitur (no pun intended) to reason that because they share similar forms, therefore they must possess the same content and occur at the same time. It is a fallacy to equate similarity with identity. The second observation is where their theory either falls or stands. They will point out similarities between the sixth and seventh element of each septet, along with their parenthetical sections, concluding all three describe the end. They argue that since there cannot be “three ultimate ends,” it follows that they recapitulate the trumpet and bowls back into the seals giving a composite of a single event (see the chart above). Marko Jauhiainen pinpoints their key argument for the recapitulation theory. He writes, [R]egarding the septets, the recapitulation theory seems to be logically necessary only if one sees the ‘end' narrated or described before the seventh bowl....

Posttribulationism and the Seals, Trumpets, Bowls in the Book of Revelation

Dr. Alan Kurschner gave some context to one of the most common interpretations of the posttribulation view, where the seals, trumpets, and bowls occur roughly at the same time. Indeed, many posttribs believe the corresponding elements are the same events; i.e., the seventh trumpet is the seventh bowl. The posttribulation interpretation necessarily forces a framework upon the book of Revelation because of a deep-seated presupposition that they hold. The presupposition is that the depiction of the battle of Armageddon in Revelation 19, with Christ appearing in the sky with his heavenly armies, indicates the beginning of his parousia. Yet, many posttribs recognize this causes a discrepancy because the book of Revelation shows the day of the Lord's wrath unfolding before the battle of Armageddon during the trumpet and bowl judgments. In other words, how can the parousia begin at the battle of Armageddon but at the same time affirm that his judgment does not begin before his parousia? They also recognize the discrepancy of affirming that God's people have been resurrected between the sixth and the seventh seal in Revelation 7 and, at the same time, claiming that the resurrection occurs in association with the battle of Armageddon in Revelation 19 that they say initiates the parousia. How, then, do they attempt to reconcile these problems? Enter the concurrent-recapitulation interpretation of posttribulationism. Since this issue is important and a very common point of disagreement between prewrath and posttrib, Dr. Kurschner argues that the concurrent-recapitulation interpretation is not only implausible but contradictory. In addition, he shows that the consecutive-progressive framework is the most natural, intended interpretation to the relationship of the seals, trumpets, and bowls. 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of the release of the Beatles' final album, Let it Be. To commemorate the occasion, the remaining members of the band have remixed the album and unleashed an eight-hour-plus documentary directed by Peter Jackson that lays bare the making of the record. For super-fans this video memoir reveals a lot about the messiness of the creative process: The Beatles nearly broke up while making it! Author Tim Riley says that the band approached Let It Be with an aesthetic challenge: to get back to playing as a live band. But the original release of the album deviated from that mission and received mixed reviews. Over the decades, The Beatles have revisited this work with multiple mixes and alternative takes that try to show the original spirit of this direct-to-tape, live album. Charlie and Nate listen back, warts and all, to get to the heart of this enigmatic project. En 1966, The Mamas And The Papas, “la familia real de Laurel Canyon”, hicieron su debut con el álbum If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears y la dieron a conocer a nivel popular en Estados Unidos. When, on Monday, 15th August, 1960, The Beatles left Liverpool en route to their first stint in Hamburg, West Germany, the five of them—John, Paul, George, Stu and the newly recruited Pete—were joined by five others: their manager/agent Allan Williams, Trinidadian calypsonian Harold Philips (a.k.a. Lord Woodbine), Austrian translator Herr Steiner, Allan’s wife Beryl… and her 19-year-old brother Barry Chang. 60 years later, Barry shares his memories of that fateful trip: in a van, on a boat and inside the Indra Club during The Beatles’ inaugural week there. It was Barry who snapped the now-iconic photo of the travellers, mid-journey, posing at Holland’s Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery, in front of a memorial bearing the legend Their Names Liveth For Evermore. Half of them have now passed on; he’s here to recount how his routine vacation became the stuff of legend. Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?!

There’s no good explanation why Macintosh hasn’t seen Jean-Claude Van Damme’s action-star debut. He’s seen his fair share of martial-arts epics, fighting movies and dumb action roles. But other than Street Fighter, there’s a major lack of JCVD in his repertoire. Meanwhile, Maud has watched this at least a dozen times, and now it’s time for her to share this terribly-acted but nevertheless immensely watchable fighting movie. With no budget, 1988 looks and a super-unreliable narrator in the real Frank Dux, this movie is a hot mess in the absolute best way. And if that won’t convince you, just drink every time JCVD does the splits or yells. That’ll REALLY help you enjoy the movie… Macintosh & Maud have started a Patreon! The Beatles' Final Performance

On this date in 1969, The Beatles had their last public performance, playing on their record company’s roof in London. Here are some things you may not have known about the concert. The performance was unannounced and caught the lunchtime crowd of office workers on the streets below by surprise. The previous year, The Beatles had started a multimedia corporation called Apple Corps Limited. The concert was conducted on the roof of the company’s headquarters at 3 Saville Row, during recording sessions for the album that eventually became “Let it Be.”  The album was originally intended to be called “Get Back” after one of the songs, and as a reference to the group’s effort to get back to basics after several heavily produced albums. The recording process, however, was from all reports, a disaster, leading George Harrison to leave the band for a week. During his absence, John Lennon reportedly wanted to hire Eric Clapton to replace Harrison, but Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr wouldn’t agree. Harrison returned a week later, bringing along keyboardist Billy Preston to help ease tensions. The sessions were then moved to Apple Studio. The sessions were filmed as part of a planned movie. As a finale for the film, a rooftop concert was devised. Harrison initially resisted, calling the idea “silly,” but relented for the sake of the film. Wires from the control room in the basement were run to the roof to record the sessions. The four Beatles and Preston played nine takes of five songs during the 42-minute show. Takes of the songs “I’ve Got a Feeling,” “One After 909” and Dig a Pony,” were eventually used on the album, while chatter was used on and between other tracks. Eventually, the crowd of onlookers began to snarl traffic, and noise complaints arose, leading the Metropolitan Police to try to shut down the performance. Initially Apple employees wouldn’t let police in the building, but changed their minds after being threatened with arrest. The band played for several minutes longer, before concluding with Lennon’s now famous ending. While “Let It Be” was the final Beatles album released, it wasn’t the last to be recorded. The sessions for “Abbey Road” began less than three weeks after the “Get Back” sessions ended. Our question: What was the Beatles’ final No. 1 hit song in the United States? Today is unofficially Yodel for Your Neighbors Day, National Croissant Day, and Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day. It’s the birthday of former U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt, who was born in 1882; actor Gene Hackman, who is 87; and musician Phil Collins, who is 66. This week in 1969, the top song in the U.S. was “Crimson and Clover” by Tommy James and the Shondells. The No. 1 movie was “Oliver!,” while the novel “The Salzburg Connection” by Helen MacInnes topped the New York Times Bestsellers list.  Weekly question: What were Billy Preston’s two No. 1 singles in the United States? This is the second installment of a three-part podcast with my friend RJ. He’s a talented percussionist and straight-up badass drummer. Furthermore, he’s smart, passionate, charismatic, funny, and incredibly thoughtful. This makes for what turns out to be a booze-soaked master class on music criticism and appreciation. If you skipped part one but love music…not just listening to it but thinking about it, not just as background but as an integral part of your life and happiness, not as a soundtrack but as a primary focus…you should NOT miss this one. I asked RJ to tell me why Ringo Starr is such an important drummer, and why the majority of casual Beatles fans, who generally consider him to be the least important, least talented Beatle by far, should lay off of Ringo.  RJ’s responses are outstanding, original, and extremely thought provoking. Keep in mind as you listen, we’d consumed 3+ big beers each by this point…so we were skating around this sophisticated rink in full-on drunken revelry. Things you’ll learn today: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is close to a perfect album…except for that stupid fucking George Harrison song. (Within You, Without You) The Beatles sound…is Ringo. The Beatles didn’t groove until Abbey Road, and that’s because Ringo, like Stella, got his groove back. Listen to the song, “Sun King.” Ringo is to the Beatles as Nick Mason is to Pink Floyd. Or Flink Poyd. (Remember, beer.) How the fuck do you say the name: Neil Peart? (“Pert” or “Peert”) Nirvana’s “Breed,” from Nevermind, is, from every technical perspective (i.e. lyrics, composition, arrangement, musicality, mix), complete and utter shit. However, R.J. simply can’t get enough of it, and neither could most of us in our late 30’s to early 40’s. Also, a question for you, loyal listener and reader: What album before “Nevermind” was as culturally and historically significant? And have there been any after? We end on a good RJ rant. A very good one. But then again, every RJ rant is better than average. Have fun with this! (Oh hey…the music.  Here’s the list, in order of appearance: The Beatles, “One After 909.” The Beatles, “Sun King.” Nirvana, “Breed.”  I know I’m missing a couple RJ played in the body of the recording.  For now, let’s just assume I intend all credit where due and required, take none, earn no money from the use of unsaid credited music [oxymoron much, Del Duca?], and will remove it if someone legitimately threatens to sue me.) -G   We hope you have enjoyed the show!

"Ask Me Why" was released in the United Kingdom and The US (VJ Records) as the B-side of their single "Please Please Me". It was also included on the UK album, Please Please Me. It was recorded on 26 November 1962, in 6 takes. Take 6 was used for both the mono single and the stereo LP mix. No outtakes have surfaced, so there's not a lot to create a remix from.... Apparently, Ask Me Why was always intended as a B-side, and the production is not of the same standard as Please Please Me. It is a single run-through, no overdubs or double tracking anywhere. Oddly, there's an acoustic guitar on the vocal track, so I suppose Lennon played this acoustic guitar while recording the vocals. The vocal performance is fine as far as timing and phrasing go, but sounds a little unmotivated at times. Perhaps Lennon's disinterst in the vocals is rooted in the lyrics: they are typical Lennon, although this is one of the earliest Lennon compositions. Unfortunately, it is the earliest example of a Lennon 'schoolboy poet' type, and not of the - much stronger - type where Lennon sings about his own true emotions. Still, a song that starts with "I Love You' can't be that bad..... Although not a strong text, it is very much Lennon nonetheless: as usual, we learn nothing about his lover, we just hear about Lennon's own feelings; as we see more often, Lennon expects obedience from his lover (I Love You because you say the words I want to know), which is also the theme in others songs, such as "All I've Got To Do", One After 909 (I said move over once....), "Run For Your Life" and many others. Musically, the song is more complex than one would think at first hearing (as I found out while remixing it.....). Vocals come in somwehere in the middle of the bar, a verse contains an 'odd' number (13) of bars, and bits and pieces are repeated and strung together. But he all makes it hang tight into a possible underrated song: there are only 2 cover versions in the BDJ archives, far below the typcial number of covers. Anyway, well worth a remix to lift it from the left/right stereo soundscape !

While cleaning out the attic of BDJ Towers, we stumbled on a tape; it carried a hand-written label, stating only: "Carnival of Light JPM". When we played the tape, we found it contained just fragments of speech, reversed loops and sound effects. So we erased it. The flip side of the tape was much more interesting: apparently a private copy of the Cavern Rehearsel sessions; this tape is special, since it contains One After 909 IN STEREO, recorded in the cavern. This again shows how avant-garde the Beatles were, even then, since stereo recording hadn't been invented yet.
