Sammy Hagar Opens Up on 21-Year Rift with Alex Van Halen: "I'm Still Out Here Doing It—and That Bothers Him" In a candid new interview with Rolling Stone, Sammy Hagar has broken his silence on the long-standing rift between him and Alex Van Halen—revealing they haven't spoken in over two decades. Alex, who notably refused to mention Sammy by name in his recent memoir Brothers, has apparently shut the door on any form of communication, and Hagar is finally offering his side of the story. “I've asked people like Irving Azoff, ‘What's the problem?'” Hagar says. “Some say it's about Cabo Wabo—that the band gave it to me when it was losing money, and after I turned it into a massive success, Alex got mad. But they gave it to me! I signed off on everything and took the risk. Now they're angry I made it work?” But the Cabo story is only part of the tension. Hagar also points to his brutally honest 2011 memoir Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock, where he chronicled Eddie Van Halen's struggles during their final tour together. While Sammy says he's not looking to drag Eddie's name through the mud again, the damage may have already been done. Still, Hagar believes something deeper is fueling Alex's resentment. “I think Al's mad because I'm still out there doing it—with Mike [Anthony]—and he can't. He's not a frontman, not a songwriter. And I don't think he wants to—or can—play drums anymore. I'd feel terrible if I couldn't do it either. But I'm happy, man. And being happy really pisses people off.” Hagar adds with a smirk, “Al, I'm making you money out here—selling Van Halen records, keeping the legacy alive. Just leave me alone, and I'll do the same.” Alex, for his part, has offered a different vision of Van Halen's legacy. In interviews promoting Brothers, he explained why the book ends in 1984, skipping over the entire "Van Hagar" era and beyond. “The original band—that was the magic,” Alex told Rolling Stone and USA Today. “After that, it wasn't the same. We did good work, but the spirit, the fabric, the bond—it changed.” Asked about the Best Of All Worlds tour featuring Hagar, Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Jason Bonham, Alex didn't mince words: “I'm not interested. They're not doing the band justice. That's not my business.” In fact, Alex never once mentioned Hagar by name during the Rolling Stone interview. Instead, he referred to post-1984 Van Halen simply as: “We had a lot of other singers over the years.” Despite the cold shoulder, Hagar insists he and Eddie reconciled before the guitarist's death in 2020. “I'm at peace with Eddie,” Sammy says. “That was important to me.” Hagar fronted Van Halen from 1985 to 1996, delivering four No. 1 albums—5150, OU812, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, and Balance—before the band's brief 2004 reunion. That tour ended on a sour note, with Anthony forced to take a pay cut and sign away rights to the band name and logo just to participate. As for Alex? Hagar isn't holding his breath for a reunion call. “Al's changed. And that's fine,” he says. “I'm just out here keeping the music alive.” "Exclusively Van Halen" is the ultimate destination for all things Van Halen. https://www.youtube.com/live/DYquc8DOaWQ?si=GWCiPrB817Q8KorA Sammy Hagar recently shared the story behind his song “Eagles Fly” in an episode of his Storytime YouTube series, revealing how it was almost a Van Halen track before being dismissed by Alex Van Halen—only for Alex to later regret the decision when the song appeared on Hagar's 1987 solo album, I Never Say Goodbye. “I'm at the studio,” Hagar recalled. “I'm playing it for Ed, and Alex is standing in the background. I'm on acoustic guitar, and Alex says, ‘Sounds like John Denver!'” Hagar couldn't help but laugh at the memory. “I'll never forget it! I'm thinking, ‘Yeah—what's wrong with that? John's a badass! Shut your mouth when you're talking about John!' It was just such a funny reaction.” Hagar eventually recorded “Eagles Fly” for his solo album, with Eddie Van Halen contributing guitar, bass, and backing vocals. When Alex later heard the finished version, his tune changed. “Alex heard it on the record,” Hagar explained, “and he said, ‘Hey, man, you should have saved that for Van Halen!' I reminded him, ‘Dude, don't you remember what you said about it?'” Although it wasn't released as a Van Halen track, “Eagles Fly” became a staple of their live performances during Hagar's time in the band. “It's ironic,” Hagar noted, “because it became one of Alex's favorite songs. It was also one of Eddie's favorites. It really should have been on a Van Halen record.” Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Hagar added, “That would've been incredible on OU812, but it is what it is. It's a song I'll play for the rest of my life.”

In the middle of a very long shift, working to get the brand new Dallas, TX store open, Rob Tolleson had no idea why Kevin Cassidy wanted to go out for coffee with him. “I thought I was in trouble” was his first thought. When Cassidy asked if Rob had ever considered working in management, Tolleson told him that he had not for the simple fact that he hadn't been on the sales floor in years. Cassidy responded that he had seen that Rob could work with everybody in the store, which was the most important component of management, and that the company could get him up to speed on how to handle the nuts and bolts of being a Manager. Thus began the Rob Tolleson's management career with Tower Records. Born and raised in New Orleans, at the age of 10 Rob was adopted by the guitarist of a local/national band who had married his mother. From an early age music was a part of Rob's life. Nonetheless, he had no idea what Tower Records was until one of his mother's friends brought by a promo of Van Halen's OU812. The same friend got him an interview with Record Sales Manager, Freddi Szilagi. In this week's episode, Rob Tolleson tells us about growing up a fan of Classic Rock, starting out alphabetizing Jazz cassettes, moving to Supervisor, and then receiving. From there Rob became a bit of a fixture on the A team circuit, helping to open brand new stores for Tower Records. He also takes an outsider into some of the inner workings of how Tower navigated the city's Jazzfest, where Mondays were often $100,000 days, beating the store's Christmas business. Rob also remembers, after it all closed down, the TV show “Treme” taking a shot at Tower Records during one of its first season episodes.

Van Halen were about the biggest hard rock band in the world around 1988. The headlined the Monsters of Rock Tour over Scorpions, Metallica, Dokken & Kingdom Come and had big hits with their 2nd album featuring Sammy Hagar, OU812. On the heels of 5150 which followed the departure of David Lee Roth, Van Halen seemed poised for bigger and better things. But OU812 sold about half of what 5150 sold in the US, even though OU812 is a little harder than its predecessor. Were they listening to critics who felt 5150 was too heavy on the synths? Were they worried Diamond Dave was getting more praise for his solo efforts? For us personally, this album came at a time in our lives when we were discovering the first Van Halen album and all the heaviness and guitar mastery of their original release. Plus, we had fond memories of big MTV hits like Jump, Panama and Hot For Teacher from 1984 when we were just getting into music. So Van Halen had the street cred for heavy duty guitar rock but the pop stardom from MTV. Though we were excited to hear 5150 and love tracks like Mine All Mine and AFU (Naturally Wired) the big hits like When It's Love, Feels So Good and Finish What You Started aren't among our all time VH favorites. How do we rank it in the Pantheon of Van Halen records? Have a listen and find out! In our rowdiest and potentially most offensive episode yet, Eric and Eddy are joined by The Plug Podcast's Nate “Bushy” Atchison to discuss Van Hagar's OU812! In addition to an in-depth, track-by-track analysis of its music and lyrical content, we tackle Dave vs. Sammy, Casio keyboards, Sammy's singing ability, the real reason Michael Anthony likes Sammy, and we ponder why this album still hasn't been remastered. If you've got a sense of humor and want to party, get out that Cabo Wabo Tequila and let's boogie! It's an episode so wild, it should have a Parental Advisory sticker on it…!!!

Welcome to Season 2 of The Bogus Otis Show!  2023 brings plenty of milestones in the Sammy Hagar and Van Halen canon, and your Bo-Hosts will be all over them!  First up is Van Hagar's 1988 sophomore album, OU812, which turns 35 years young!  This album is a special one for Bo-Host Darin, so this will be the first of several retrospectives on this wildly eclectic and highly polarizing album. OU812 also holds a special place in Eric Senich's heart, so who better to join Bo-Hosts Brent & Darin than the host of the popular Booked on Rock and DISCovery Podcasts, who also happens to be a writer for the almighty Van Halen News Desk! The battle of Pasadena continues as David Lee Roth has his SKYSCRAPER release and VAN HAGAR, err, VAN HALEN puts out OU812. Track By Track observations for both. Today's episode for me was a difficult one. On October 6th, we lost one of the greatest musicians to ever live, Eddie Van Halen. The amount of tributes that have been produced for this legend are numerous, so I knew that I needed to be patient with mine and not rush it. I'm thankful I did. What you're going to hear is my probably unlike many others since I don't focus on the Roth years. I wanted to be a little different. So I decided to dive deep into the post-Roth era and curate my ten favorite songs from this later era of the band that also highlight the greatness of EVH. All of these songs are special to me and I know that true Van Halen fans will appreciate hearing these deeper cuts from this era.I do not own the rights to any of the music played on this podcast. The musicians or the music labels own the copyright. I play this music under the doctrine of Fair Use. I am not here as a DJ, but to offer music commentary and criticism. My goal is for you to gain a larger appreciation for the bands or the musicians played here on this podcast and I ask for you to go out and purchase their music or legally stream it. The musicians need your support and I hope this show contributes to spreading the good word about the bands you hear on these episodes. I do not profit in any way from this podcast.

Join What the Riff as we take a moment to reflect on the music and impact that Eddie Van Halen had on our lives as teenagers in the late 70s and early 80s. Eddie lost his long battle with cancer on October 6, 2020. He will be missed, but his mastery of the guitar will undoubtedly continue to inspire artists through eternity. We only feature 4 tracks in this bonus episode: “Eruption” from Van Halen 1, “Source of Infection” from OU812, “Girl Gone Bad” from 1984, and “And the Cradle Will Rock” from Women & Children First. Let us know how this affects you in a comment or review — or share your thoughts on our Facebook page. Eddie, we miss you. Rest in Peace, and may God bless your family. Dave and Blair sit down to eulogize some old dude name Edward Van Halen.  That is sort of what it felt like when reading how much older Eddie was than the boys, but hey, 1955.  Damn.In truth Eddie played a unique roll in Dave and Blair's life.  He hit when they were 12 and 12.  Imagine that.  What did you feel like at that age?  Someone who looked as crazy as Eddie and acted as weird as he did being the cool kid?  That was a fun break from the cool kid always getting the girl.Oh, and Eddie could shred too.  You listen to guitar now and it has not progressed from a rock perspective.  That is a bummer because a lot of art has gotten better and better.  Rock from the 1950's?  Please.  We like it because it was unique.  Pat it on its head and send it along.

This one was suggested to us by listener Connie. While we thank her profusely for allowing us to dive into the insanity of David Lee Roth, we also curse her for forcing us to listen to hours worth of Sammy Hagar’s intense screaming and red-rimmed sunglasses. Also, on this episode, Mike talks about how he managed to personally piss off a famous musician that we’ve covered on the podcast.
