Sammy Hagar Opens Up on 21-Year Rift with Alex Van Halen: "I'm Still Out Here Doing It—and That Bothers Him" In a candid new interview with Rolling Stone, Sammy Hagar has broken his silence on the long-standing rift between him and Alex Van Halen—revealing they haven't spoken in over two decades. Alex, who notably refused to mention Sammy by name in his recent memoir Brothers, has apparently shut the door on any form of communication, and Hagar is finally offering his side of the story. “I've asked people like Irving Azoff, ‘What's the problem?'” Hagar says. “Some say it's about Cabo Wabo—that the band gave it to me when it was losing money, and after I turned it into a massive success, Alex got mad. But they gave it to me! I signed off on everything and took the risk. Now they're angry I made it work?” But the Cabo story is only part of the tension. Hagar also points to his brutally honest 2011 memoir Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock, where he chronicled Eddie Van Halen's struggles during their final tour together. While Sammy says he's not looking to drag Eddie's name through the mud again, the damage may have already been done. Still, Hagar believes something deeper is fueling Alex's resentment. “I think Al's mad because I'm still out there doing it—with Mike [Anthony]—and he can't. He's not a frontman, not a songwriter. And I don't think he wants to—or can—play drums anymore. I'd feel terrible if I couldn't do it either. But I'm happy, man. And being happy really pisses people off.” Hagar adds with a smirk, “Al, I'm making you money out here—selling Van Halen records, keeping the legacy alive. Just leave me alone, and I'll do the same.” Alex, for his part, has offered a different vision of Van Halen's legacy. In interviews promoting Brothers, he explained why the book ends in 1984, skipping over the entire "Van Hagar" era and beyond. “The original band—that was the magic,” Alex told Rolling Stone and USA Today. “After that, it wasn't the same. We did good work, but the spirit, the fabric, the bond—it changed.” Asked about the Best Of All Worlds tour featuring Hagar, Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Jason Bonham, Alex didn't mince words: “I'm not interested. They're not doing the band justice. That's not my business.” In fact, Alex never once mentioned Hagar by name during the Rolling Stone interview. Instead, he referred to post-1984 Van Halen simply as: “We had a lot of other singers over the years.” Despite the cold shoulder, Hagar insists he and Eddie reconciled before the guitarist's death in 2020. “I'm at peace with Eddie,” Sammy says. “That was important to me.” Hagar fronted Van Halen from 1985 to 1996, delivering four No. 1 albums—5150, OU812, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, and Balance—before the band's brief 2004 reunion. That tour ended on a sour note, with Anthony forced to take a pay cut and sign away rights to the band name and logo just to participate. As for Alex? Hagar isn't holding his breath for a reunion call. “Al's changed. And that's fine,” he says. “I'm just out here keeping the music alive.” "Exclusively Van Halen" is the ultimate destination for all things Van Halen. https://www.youtube.com/live/mVUdI2BXl7s?si=U2pAE12tsdAWQMV3 On tonight's episode of Exclusively Van Halen, we talk about the story of Eddie Van Halen's collaboration with Thomas Dolby, where Eddie contributed to two tracks ("Eastern Bloc" and "Close But No Cigar") on Dolby's 1992 album Astronauts & Heretics. Despite being in the midst of recording Van Halen's 1991 album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, Eddie invited Dolby to his home studio to work on the songs, creating an experience Dolby likened to "a scene from Spinal Tap." Van Halen songs comprised two-thirds of the performance. Hagar opened the evening with a rendition of "Good Enough," the opening track from 1986's "5150" album, accompanied by guitarist Joe Satriani, bassist Michael Anthony, drummer Jason Bonham, and multi-instrumentalist Rai Thistlethwayte. He followed this with two songs from 1991's "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge": "Poundcake" and "Runaround." The set also featured David Lee Roth-era Van Halen classics such as "Panama" and "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," with a section of "Jump" appearing in a medley that included Montrose's "Space Station #5" and Chickenfoot's "Oh Yeah." The performance also showcased Joe Satriani's iconic "Satch Boogie," a track he frequently played during his time with Deep Purple. In related news, Sammy Hagar is gearing up to kick off his The Best of All World tour and is giving fans a sneak peek at what to expect. The rocker has been sharing clips of rehearsals on Instagram, including one with him and the band – Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, guitarist Joe Satriani, and drummer Jason Bonham – performing the Van Halen track "Poundcake" from the album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. It was the ninth studio album by Van Halen. It was released on June 17, 1991, on Warner Bros. Records and is the third to feature vocalist Sammy Hagar. It debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart and maintained the position for three consecutive weeks. The album marked the first time the band had Ted Templeman working in a producer capacity since 1984, when David Lee Roth was still lead singer. "Right Now” by Van Halen is an inspirational song about living in the moment, but it took a long time to come together. Released on 1991's For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, their third after Sammy Hagar joined as frontman, it was purposefully written without a trace of reference to fast cars, girls, or partying. The video for the song was so ahead of its time - dealing with world issues and cultural hot button topics - that Hagar was afraid that the lyrics he had so painstakingly penned would get lost in the concept, at first. And of course, there's the incomparable Eddie Van Halen playing piano on “Right Now,” a musical note that has its own backstory. Unpack it all in this episode of Behind The Song! For their ninth studio album and Sammy Hagar's third album as lead singer, Hagar suggested Van Halen title it F*CK (... only the * was a letter). Censorship in rock music was a controversial topic at the time, and Hagar wanted to push limits. The name changed to For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge when Hagar was told by Ray "Boom Boom” Mancini that the vulgarity was actually an acronym for this phrase. For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge was intended to be a return to the rock roots of Van Halen after a number of albums featuring more use of synthesizers and a stronger pop feel. The album took a year to make, as Van Halen was one of the most successful and well-known rock bands at the time, and the members were enjoying the material fruits of that success. They also had their own recording studio (Eddie Van Halen's 5150 Studios), and money sufficient to not have to worry about rushing an album out.Critical reception was mixed at best. Nevertheless, it was a commercial hit, debuting at number 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. We hope you enjoy this album podcast, and the debate on the David Lee Roth/Sammy Hagar eras of Van Halen.P.S. Wayne is crazy if he doesn't like Sammy.Guest contributor Joe Davis brings us his favorite Van Halen album. Judgement DayThis deeper cut is the second track from the album. It is a fast moving, hard rocking critique of conservative Christianity's moves to censor words and actions. This song contains screams from Hagar and Anthony that are some of the loudest notes hit by the two on any Van Halen song.Pleasure DomeJoe picked this song because he considers it “the best guitar solo in any Van Halen song.” Many consider the song to be inspired by Rush's “Xanadu,” and both take inspiration from the Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem “Kubla Kahn.” The lyrics reflect the temptation and trap that is a life focused on pleasure. The Dream Is OverThis deep cut discusses the disillusionment when the dream of easy money or success following "the system" results in failure. If a generation can't succeed by the rules of society, then “dream another dream, this dream is over.”RunaroundAnother deep cut, this one starts with a six-stringed bass guitar. A number of innovations were featured in this album, from this six-string guitar to the use of a drill near the pickups to start "Poundcake." The lyrics are about a girl who can't get pinned down. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:(Everything I do) I Do It For You by Bryan Adams (from the motion picture "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves")Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman starred in this rendition of the classic Robin Hood tale. STAFF PICKS:It's You That Leaves Me Dry by EMFWayne gets the staff picks rolling with the Manchester sound. This deep cut from the same album that gave us “Unbelievable” was a popular track in dance clubs in the UK. The lyrics are about a bad relationship where one partner sucks the life out of another. All the Time in the World by JunkyardRob brings us another deep cut with a Motley Crue feel. Junkyard hails from Los Angeles, and this song went to number 24 on the charts. The members of Junkyard were fans of the Southern Rock sound, though not fans of Southern Rock culture.Losing My Religion by R.E.M.Friend of the show John Lynch brings us one which is definitely not a deep cut! This mandolin-based song is the lead single off "Out of Time," R.E.M.'s seventh studio album. Lead singer Michael Stipe has stated that the song is not about religion - despite the title - but more about losing temper, or feelings of desperation.Man In The Box by Alice In Chains Joe finishes off the staff picks with a track loosely about censorship, but more specifically inspired by a discussion about cattle being raised in small boxes with little room. This also ushers in the start of the grunge era. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Black Napkins by Frank ZappaThe always eclectic Frank Zappa finishes us off this week with a jazzy instrumental piece.

A microphone is a good enough platform for getting back at people, but an entire recording studio is even better. Popular music is littered with songs getting back at an ex lover, from Waylon Jennings to Taylor Swift, but a fair number of the tracks you know by heart are actually clap-backs to the people in the mixing booth or the record label offices. Use Your Illusion kom út sama dag og systurplatan; Use Your Illusion II og þetta þótti dálítið merkilegt á sínum tíma. 16 lög á Use Your Illusion I og 14 á númer II. 30 lög í það heila. Use Your Illusion I fór hæst í annað sæti Bandaríska vinsældalistans en hin platan fór alla leið á toppinn. Plöturnar seldust báðar gríðarlega vel og hafa í dag selst í meira en sjöfaldri platínu. Use Your Illusion var tilnefnd til Grammy verðlauna 1992 í flokknum Best Hard Rock Performance ásamt Moneytalks með AC/DC, Man in The Box með Alice in Chains og For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge með Van Halen sem hlaut verðlaunin, sem hljómar eins og brandari í dag. Það man enginn eftir þeirri plötu. Á Use You Illusion plötunum var Gun?s Roses orðið sex manna band.

In salute to the life of guitar legend Eddie Van Halen, Colin Krieger and I talk about the '90's releases of the band - "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge:, "Balance", and "Van Halen III". A small amount of disputing over who the best VH vocalist was, and showing some love for Gary Cherone. Also, we need to have a gofundme to get Colin a Cameo from Vince Neil.
Pat and comedian/podcaster Mike Schmidt share their thoughts on the passing of Edward Van Halen.

Episode 9 covers the 1991 album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge by Van Halen. Mark, Kevin, Alex, and Chris take you on a historical journey surrounding the album as well as share our favorite and not-so favorite moments from the album. We go on a deep dive track-by-track listen of this album as well as share personal stories of discovering For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. #Dial1-900-Spanked.
This one was suggested to us by listener Connie. While we thank her profusely for allowing us to dive into the insanity of David Lee Roth, we also curse her for forcing us to listen to hours worth of Sammy Hagar’s intense screaming and red-rimmed sunglasses. Also, on this episode, Mike talks about how he managed to personally piss off a famous musician that we’ve covered on the podcast. We’re finally making a (bad) name for ourselves on this show.Closing track: “Hot for Teacher” from 1984 (1984)Check out our episode playlists on Spotify!https://open.spotify.com/user/motherpuncherincMike’s Picks:1984 (1984) — Best AlbumVan Halen II ( 1979) — Personal FavoriteVan Halen III (1998) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex’s Picks: Van Halen (1978) — Best AlbumWomen and Children First (1980) — Personal FavoriteOU812 (1988) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums discussed this episode…Van Halen (1978)Van Halen II (1979)Women and Children First (1980)Fair Warning (1981)Diver Down (1982)1984 (1984)5150 (1986)OU812 (1988)For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991)Balance (1995)Van Halen III (1998)A Different Kind of Truth (2012)Follow Mike on Instagram @popejesseventura and Alex @motherpuncher

This week we're kicking off the first of a series in which we revisit the 90s output of a band from the 1980s that was massive popular. For the first “in the 90s” round table, we're tackling Van Halen, who sold a combined 47 million albums from 1980 to 1988, and enter the 90s with the successful For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge album in 1991 that spawned the gigantic single “Right Here Right Now.” From there, the band fumbled through a not very live double album before the uneven Balance album in 1995, the final with Sammy Hagar. We revisit the wild months in 1996 that feature the departure of Sammy, return and quick departure of David Lee Roth and addition of Extreme singer Gary Cherone for 1998′s III. To make sense of it all, we're joined by Van Halen Rising author Greg Renoff, Ultimate Classic Rock writer Matt Wardlaw, writer/author/podcaster Eric Grubbs, and 80s Rock Savant/KidsInterviewBands.com proprietor Chip Midnight for a lively and lengthly discussion.
