Prieš daugiau nei dešimtmetį Marija Palaikytė Lietuvą sudomino itin netradicine savo profesija – baigusi studijas Florencijos mados institute „Polimoda“, ji prisistatė kaip mados tendencijų prognozuotoja. Po to sekė gausybė kitų įdomių projektų: nuo vyrų mados savaitės, organizuotos Vilniuje, iki televizijos stilistės darbo. Šiuo metu Marija veda realybės šou „Mados klubas“ ir į lietuviškos mados istoriją įneša naujų vėjų.Ved.

Italian fashion designer Francesco Risso is renowned for his offbeat, innovative approach to contemporary clothing. He learned how to cut and sew from the age of eight with any fabric he could find, going on to study fashion at Florence's Polimoda, New York's FIT, and London's Central Saint Martins. As creative director at Marni since 2016, Risso gained prominence by infusing the brand with vibrant colors, eclectic patterns, and playful aesthetics. His charming exuberance and unique ability to blend craft with modernity sets him apart and captivates audiences worldwide. What he sees as contemporary now is simple and uncontrolled by trends and a fast-paced industry: food and sex. Episode Highlights: Risso's early years were spent not talking in a hectic and blended family home in Genoa, where he communicated by making things with his hands. At 8 or 9 years old, he began making clothes, scavenging clothes from his grandmother's closet to cut and sew. Studying the classics and art, Risso “escaped” from his loud family by moving to Florence, knowing he would make clothes. He found in the dance, clubbing, and rave scenes a way to escape from the constrictive traditional forces in Italy at the time when he considered himself goth and an outsider. “Provocative, and visceral, and obsessive.”: Risso talks about how he accepts a darker side of his outlook as a complement to his lighter and romantic side. He notes one of his mentors, Louise Wilson at Central Saint Martins, taught him to base a world around a garment without using typical fashion references. Risso read a Virginia Woolf piece in which she invites her friends to the countryside and tells them not to bring clothes, as to leave behind a kind of social structure, and this inspired him to lose reference points. On the secret of merging creative freedom with commercial success, Risso champions trust, pleasure, and courage, and living in the moment rather than for the final product. Marni Jam is one example of interdisciplinary creativity that Risso works into the brand, expanding music into fashion. To Risso, what's contemporary now is “sex and food”—two exchanges he finds beautiful in that they build community. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Surrounded by some of the most iconic and glistening contemporary sculptures of all time, a group of students interviewed American artist Jeff Koons. Palazzo Strozzi chose Polimoda as educational partner of the exhibition, and the two institutions have joined forces to reach an international community of young people who are passionate about fashion, art and creativity. Sitting in front of Balloon Venus Lespugue (Red), Jeff Koons' reflection bounced off the glossy red surface as he freeheartedly answered the curious questions Polimoda students Alisa Rebecca Watson (Master in Fashion Brand Management), Rano Karimova (Undergraduate in Business of Fashion), Autumn Caroline Mowery (Master in Fashion Brand Management), Ario Mezzolani (Master in Fashion Critique and Curation), Ana Maria Barth Teixeira (Master in Fashion Trend Forecasting) and Julian Restrepo Espinal (Master in Fashion Trend Forecasting) asked about his remarkable career.

Come with us to Tokyo Fashion Week, where your hosts Simone Cipriani and Clare Press met with longtime friend of the Ethical Fashion Initiative, Hirofumi Kurino of United Arrows. According to Business of Fashion, he's a "leading arbiter or style". Polimoda calls him "a fashion oracle" and Vogue, one of the most stylish men in fashion. Mr. Kurino also has a fine understanding of the importance of socially responsible business. United Arrows was the first Japanese retailer to work with the EFI, back in 2013. A fascinating look at Japanese style, what makes successful retail and the importance of sustainability. Plus you'll hear all about how Mr Kurino launched a United Arrows sub-brand, Tégê, with accessories made in Kenya and men's tailoring sewn in Japan using artisan produced fabric from Burkina Faso. It's all about the mix, he says. After all, Kurino-san is also a DJ. Since his junior year in high school, Chris Donovan has been sketching women’s shoes. It’s been his quiet obsession for the past 30+ years. At the age of 50, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. And he knew it was time to leave his safe job at the phone company to pursue his lifelong dream. “I need to follow this. I need to find out why I have this passion for shoes.” Based on the recommendation of European shoe designer Aki Choklat, he was accepted to Polimoda, one of the best fashion design institutes in the world. He enrolled in an accelerated masters program and packed his bags for Florence, Italy. And while his first few months were difficult, he ended up graduating at the top of his class. Since our initial interview with Chris in October 2018, he has figured out how to turn his amazing designs into an actual product. Take it from Tim Gunn of Project Runway: "It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before." For more examples of Chris' amazing designs, visit www.ChrisDonovanFootwear.com.

Asanyah is Jamaican born, American raised, and has lived in West Africa. She is the founding director at the Miami Fashion Institute at Miami Dade College, she has her own fashion line Circa24. We had a really fun conversation on a wide range of topics from being Jamaican, being vegan, living in West Africa, the influence of her European fashion teacher, mentoring and more.During part two of our interview with Asanyah Davidson the conversation goes a little deeper. Asanyah talks about how having a diverse group of mentors helped her development. Then she discusses the people; cultures; schools such as Design and Architecture Senior High (DASH) in Miami , the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in NYC, and studying at Polimoda in Florence, Italy; and living in different countries influenced her as a fashion designer. Asanyah goes in depth about her time in Nigeria and Ghana. Her time there gave her a greater appreciation and understanding of textiles and the work behind them. This period in her life greatly influenced her career as a fashion designer. She will teach us about shibori, Adire, Ashoke, and Kente textiles. Asanyah learned about the significance of these fabrics and in this conversation you will learn the difference between what is and what isn’t real African fabric. Through this we delve into her viewpoint on cultural appropriation. How people think Ankara fabric is African fabric but it actually Dutch. Asanyah wants you to know what you are actually wearing so that you can truly appreciate it rather than appropriate it. All of these topics reflect how the importance of leaving your home country to understand the world better. If you disagree with Asanyah she says you can feel free to contact her. Asanyah talks about the similarities she noticed of African women and Jamaican women. She reminisces about the forever young spirit of African people, about partying with people of all ages and drinking champagne on the dance floor. We talk about her travels to South Africa and the importance of living in the moment. This was an important lesson from her travel. We then of course talk about Asanyah’s two favorite city’s Accra, Ghana and Siem Riep, Cambodia. She adores both of the cities because of how easy it is to get around. She tells us about a great Mexican restaurant in Siem Riep, yes, you heard me right - a Mexican restaurant. Getting a traditional bamboo tattoo while in Cambodia. And she talks about nightlife in Accra, which lead us to talking about how she went to the Guinness Beer factory in Ireland and beer culture around the world. Of course we circle back to Asanyah’s favorite places in Miami, Broward County AKA Greater Fort Lauderdale, and even West Florida. We finalize the conversation with Asanyah’s question for all women - “How are you dealing with life?” and her powerful definition of what a woman is.Collective Drift: Instagram: @CollectiveDrift Facebook.com/CollectiveDrift Find this episode on the CollectiveDrift.com/podcast-blog to get the links to all of Asanyah's favorite places.I'm Erica Vernet Knowles, a Miami native, an international traveler, and a culture enthusiast. When I first heard Chris Donovan’s story I thought to myself, I don’t care what it takes. I have to interview this man. It took several months and a dozen or so email exchanges. But last month, I traveled to Massachusetts with only one thing in mind: interview the telephone repairman who is now focused solely on the one thing he always wanted to do in life: design women’s shoes. Since his junior year in high school, Chris Donovan has been sketching women's shoes. It's been his quiet obsession for the 30+ years. But at the age of 50, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. And he knew it was time to leave his safe job at the phone company to pursue his lifelong dream. "I need to follow this. I need to find out why I have this passion for shoes." Based on the recommendation of European shoe designer Aki Choklat, he was accepted to Polimoda, one of the best fashion design institutes in the world. He enrolled in an accelerated masters program and packed his bags for Florence, Italy. And while his first few months were difficult, he ended up graduating at the top of his class. In January, 2019, he will launch a new line of shoes at Chris Donovan Footwear. Take it from Tim Gunn of Project Runway: it's like nothing you've ever seen before.
