In this episode, Monika explores the troubling issue of health insurance companies denying claims, a problem that has taken center stage globally and in India. A shocking incident in the U.S. on December 4, 2024, saw Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, America's largest health insurer, shot dead as he walked to an investor conference. Reports suggest the attack may be linked to mounting public frustration over insurers' tactics to “deny, delay, and depose” claims to boost profits, with UnitedHealthcare rejecting 32% of claims. Shifting focus to India, Monika highlights worrying trends documented by the Insurance Brokers Association of India. Public sector insurers perform far better than private firms, with New India Assurance paying 98.74% of claim amounts, while Star Health lags behind at just 54.61%. Disparities in claim metrics—by number of policies versus amounts—indicate some insurers may settle low-value claims quickly while dragging their feet on higher payouts. Loopholes in fine print and a lack of transparency add to policyholders' struggles. The conversation emphasizes the challenges of a three-party system involving insurers, hospitals, and policyholders. Unregulated hospitals often inflate bills or unfairly charge patients, further complicating matters. Monika stresses the urgent need for IRDAI to improve transparency, mandate better disclosure, and ensure smooth portability for customers switching insurers. Until then, buyers must remain vigilant: analyze claims data, compare insurers, and port policies with poor claims records before renewal. Listener queries focus on practical financial challenges. Abhishek asks about the difference between holding mutual fund units in a demat account versus a statement of account, seeking clarity on costs, flexibility, and their respective pros and cons. Nakaashi from Mumbai raises concerns about his retired parents' financial portfolio, exploring how to balance medical expenses, inflation-proof investments, and their desire to leave an inheritance. Purva from Pune wants to know how to plan portfolio exits during market corrections, focusing on asset allocation and strategies for rebalancing investments effectively. As we study the Paramārthsāra of Abhinava Gupta, a wonderful introductory work on the foundational metaphysics of the Svatantrya Vada (Kashmir Shaivai) system, I felt it would be good to ground ourselves in the other schools of Indian philosophy like Nyāya, Vaisheshika, Sāmkhya, Yoga and Mimāmsa in Purva and Uttara forms as well as Buddhist and Jain schools which were popular at the time when Abhinava Gupta was composing his work so we could really feel into the context in which this profound spiritual tradition has its being. Having already studied Sāmkhya at some length in previous classes, I intended to take up the classical Yoga system of Patañjali in today's class. But then I realized that when we say "yoga", these days, what comes to mind is "modern postural yoga" which has much more to do with the Post Classical Tantrik tradition known as Hatha Yoga founded by the Nath sampradaya than it does with Patañjali's tradition. So I took the opportunity to discuss just how Hatha Yoga fits into the Tantrik world and how it creates our modern understanding of yoga in an attempt to compare and contrast the two different uses of the word "yoga". We talk a little bit at the end about Swami Vivekananda's seminal "Raja Yoga" which I argue is, although certainly a commentary on the Yoga Sūtra, a more syncretic text dealing with Advaita Vedanta and Tantrik Shaivism than with Yoga proper, as per Patañjali's transmission. And also since today is the auspicious day of Varalakshmī Vratam, I thought it would be good to go over the Kamalā Devī Dhyāna mantra: kāntyā kāñcanasannibhāṃ himagiriprakhyaiścaturbhirgajairhastotkṣiptahiraṇmayāmṛtaghaṭairāsicyamānāṃ śriyam ॥vibhrāṇaṃ varamabjayugmamabhayaṃ hastaiḥ kirīṭojjvalāṃ ।kṣomābaddhanitambabimbalalitāṃ vande'ravindasthitām ॥Beautiful like gold, bathed by the golden nectar poured from four pitchers from the four trunks of four elephants, she is the Goddess Srī who holds a pair of lotuses in her two hands and with her other two hands shows the vara (boon giving) and the abhaya (fearlessness) mūdras whose head is shining with the splendour of a bejeweled crown whose lovely round hips are raimented in linen/silk...I worship that Lalitā, that playful Goddess who abides in the lotus. The state of AI in retail today can be as confusing as it is exciting. But it is a board mandate for retail, without question. The opportunity to drive higher productivity and profitability is massive, yet it's still a technology that needs to be driven by a purpose. The first and most critical question: What are you trying to solve for? Join Purva Gupta, Co-Founder and CEO of Lily, with Robin and Shelley as they deconstruct the common pitfalls of “tech vendor math” and reveal a new path forward for retailers and brands that focuses on the outcomes they want to achieve and how to measure progress and success. The bottom line? The pressure on executives and CFOs to be able to quantify and believe in the impact of AI enablement tools is greater than ever. They know they need to substantiate the results of those investments with legitimate, tangible sales and performance gains. In a world of technology proliferation and vendor claims that too often overpromises and underdelivers, executives now expect partners who can actually show the proof and deliver on those promises. The intersection of AI and retailers comes into focus in the latest episode of Retail Refined. Host Melissa Gonzalez sits down with Purva Gupta, Co-Founder and CEO of Lily AI. Their conversation centers on how Lily AI bridges the gap between ‘merchant speak' and ‘consumer speak' regarding AI and retailers. Gupta explains how Lily AI uses advanced image recognition and AI capabilities to extract product attributes from catalogs, translating them into consumer-friendly language. This process not only optimizes on-site search and demand forecasting but also leads to significant revenue increases. The discussion also touches on the importance of authenticity and context in AI applications, with Gupta emphasizing that AI is best when viewed as a tool to solve consumer problems rather than an end in itself.About PurvaPurva began her career with Saatchi and Saatchi, forming her love of retail when she was assigned to P&G and witnessed the emotional strength of people's connection to their preferred products. Inspired by consumer innovation, Purva joined Eko, a branchless banking and mobile payments platform serving the unbanked and funded by Gates Foundation. Most recently, Purva invested in life-saving apps and technologies with UNICEF Ventures' Innovation Fund. Purva is an immigrant founder on six visas in the last four years to live her American dream. Literatūrzinātnieks, LU Literatūras, folkloras un mākslas institūta vadošais pētnieks Benedikts Kalnačs Apzīmējums "ģeniālais latviešu rakstnieku pāris", attiecinot to uz Aspaziju un Rūdolfu Blaumani, pieder vācbaltiešu dzejniekam Viktoram fon Andrejanovam, kurš 1895. gadā publicēja rakstu par latviešu literatūru laikrakstā "Berliner Tageblatt". Aspazija jau bija satikusies ar Raini, tobrīd laikraksta "Dienas Lapa" redaktoru, taču rakstniecībā Raiņa vārds vēl nebija izskanējis. Savukārt Aspazijas un Blaumaņa talants bija ievērots, un viens no pirmajiem to uzsvēra tieši Andrejanovs. Jau 1893. gada pavasarī viņš bija publicējis veltījumu dzejā "Rūdolfam Blaumanim" (An Rudolf Blaumann), iesakot rakstniekam domāt par vēl plašākiem, pravietiskiem mākslas mērogiem. Divus mēnešus vēlāk, 1894. gada 19. janvārī, notika Aspazijas lugas "Vaidelote" pirmizrāde, par kuru Blaumanis vēstulē Andrievam Niedram rakstīja, ka to pavadījuši “nedzirdēti panākumi".

Šogad Mitrāju diena veltīta to atjaunošanai un par to raidījumā Zināmais nezināmajā stāsta Dabas aizsardzības pārvaldes LIFE projekta Biotopu un sugu aizsardzības ekspertu nodaļas vadītāja, botāniķe Agnese Priede.
