In celebration of Black History Month, Philadelphia-based Trans-artist and musician Diamond Anthony, known by the stage name D.D.A., has unveiled their latest musical endeavor, the album "Phoenix." D.D.A. is no stranger to the entertainment scene, having been in the music industry since 2020 and immersed in the world of drag for even longer. Their accolades include clinching the title of Mx. Philadelphia Leather for the 2020/2021 term and triumphing at the highly esteemed drag competition, Snatcherella 3000, in 2021. "Phoenix" comprises 10 tracks that traverse various musical genres, including classic hip hop, R&B trap, invigorating ballroom beats, and anthemic house rhythms. D.D.A.'s versatility as an entertainer and musician shines through each track, effortlessly navigating different vocal styles to match the distinct tones of each genre. The album captures her confidence, and the seamless transitions between songs showcase her artistry. One standout track, "Take My Breath Away," featuring Quinn Possible, lives up to its title, delivering a breathtaking experience. The instrumental is beautifully crafted, evoking chills on the first listen. When D.D.A. enters with their vocals, the song becomes a perfect blend of artistry. A noteworthy homage to Lauryn Hill occurs in the middle of the track, as it interpolates the iconic "Fu-Gee-La" by the Fugees. Quinn Possible's contribution adds grace and elegance, culminating in a flawless collaboration. The key changes towards the end of the track promise an unforgettable musical journey. D.D.A.'s "Phoenix" stands as a testament to her multifaceted talent, leaving listeners captivated by the artful fusion of genres and the artist's commanding presence. Today we're looking at the new release from US power metallers Immortal Guardian entitled Unite And Conquer. I'll begin with the album's first track, “Ozona.” This one is very representative of Immortal Guardian's approach generally, and would be at home on any of their other releases, as it displays what the band does so well. The flurry of melded guitar and keys at the beginning is classic Gabriel Guardian! There are some good riffs to be found here, albeit not super hooky. The versing is kinda so-so, to be honest, but when the chorus hits you there's some great syncopation and unity of sound and direction. And the time-change accompanying Zima's plaintive “whoa-oahs” at the end is just icing on the cake – really drawing the listener in to the magic of this song. Like so many of their tracks, I can find imperfections when I break them down into their components, but the sum of the performance is typically greater than the parts. Jumping ahead to song three in the listing we find the energetic yet evocative “Roots Run Deep.” This one features guest vocals from the mighty Ralf Scheepers of Primal Fear. I love Scheepers as a singer, and think his is a nice contribution, but honestly Zima's voice is the star here. The baritone intro he gives at the beginning is absolute gold – you won't hear many genuinely metal songs that include that brand of vocal delivery, much less in a way that fits so seamlessly with the feel of this song. Uptempo with great kitwork by drummer Justin Piedimonte, I really can't get enough of this one! Further in we find “Lost In The Darkness,” another track with guest vox, this time from the amazing Vicky Psarakis, formerly of The Agonist. Much like in the previously discussed song, Psarakis' assist is solid but serves best as a foil to launch Zima's own stellar crooning. I just love the trade off lead vocals, with each singer trying to out do the other. And Guardian's solo is fire – the perfect length and tone. My final song to highlight is “Divided We Fall”, and if I had to choose one track on the album it would likely be this. The thing I most love about “Divided” is that, in a number of respects, the band kinda keeps it right on the edge musically. The bridge in particular is a very haphazard sonic skittering where I feel like the band is at any point about to take the song off the rails… but somehow they pull it off and transition into that moderate paced but beautiful verse. Zima really pushed himself to his limits on this one to great effect exuding killer voice control. Those are my favs, but the other six tracks each have something to offer as well. I'll admit I've not given Carlos Zima his proper due as a singer, initially in my own mind lumping him in with a subgroup of singers having surface vocal similarities. But Zima is a hell of a singer, and he definitely proves it on this album with some of his best performances to date. We haven't touched on “Un Dia A La Vez,” a song where he opens himself to some ranges he hasn't on any previous Immortal Guardian track, so very beautiful and in some parts almost feminine in his delivery. And the album finale “Rise Of The Phoenix” has him able to convey emotional subtleties before exploding into a scream machine. Gabriel Guardian is truly remarkable in his approach utilizing both the guitars and keys as true twin lead instruments. Guardian has the keys in the foreground bringing loud, tight notes and driving that lead melody. There's a lot of work Guardian puts into building these compositions such that the instruments complement and don't clash. I'm giving Unite And Conquer a 8 ½ out of ten rating. Today, we speak with Phoenix, a 54-year-old man, who underwent surgery for prostate cancer in July 2022. Over a period of three years, Phoenix monitored his PSA levels, until one test showed an elevated result and him experiencing difficulty passing urine. Subsequent tests were conducted, including an MRI and biopsy to confirm diagnosis. Continence was an issue for Phoenix after surgery. He also encountered another setback in the form of an anal fissure, which made it difficult for him to walk and required surgery to fix. Regarding his current continence status, Phoenix underwent shockwave therapy to address any lingering issues. One nice surprise though that he mentioned is that his orgasms have become more intense than before. (SN: We would love your vote on this in the button below. ;)) Despite the challenges he has faced, Phoenix remains committed to following health advice, going with the flow, and avoiding competitiveness - in terms of doing rips in the gym and in how one recovers from surgery. He acknowledges that the journey has been challenging at times but is determined to do everything possible to maintain his progress. Encouragingly, he has stopped wearing pads for the last four weeks, marking a significant milestone in his recovery. In conclusion, Phoenix's experience with prostate cancer and subsequent surgery has had its ups and downs. However, he has emerged from it with positive results and an optimistic outlook. Pierre stated that he didn't write a word without inspiration and that his travels from 2007 until helped cultivate his experiences. We talk the reason for writing the book, when he decided to publish it and his end goals. He describes the purpose of naming the book The flight of the phoenix and imparts advise to inspiring authors. We also find out that there will be a book 2 and 3. I'm absolutely blown away by the sheer courage and resolute determination of this incredible individual. Natalia Saldarriaga has been through hell and back. Like all of us, she has experienced many internal struggles that she's had to wrestle with throughout her life. A few years ago a near fatal accident forced Natalia to journey within herself to find the strength to overcome the most trying of adversities. One can only begin to imagine the pure positive faith and unshakable belief that would have been necessary for her to rise up and out of a circumstance that current "medical science" deemed "irreversible after a year" . But she did it anyway, and on this very special episode she shares how. War crossed many musical boundaries upon launching in 1969. The Afro Cuban Jazz Rock Blues band, was like no other group in history. Band members transcended racial and cultural barriers within their multi-ethnic lineup. This week, Joe has prepared a special history episode. We delve into the origins of Enix. Strangely enough, they began as a real estate tabloid company, formed by Yasuhiro Fukushima. Fukushima is now one of the wealthiest Japanese men. Enix started their foray into video games when Fukushima spent some time in America. He noticed how popular computer games were, and decided to have a contest for building games. Koichi Nakamura, one of the contest winners, would later be a key player behind the scenes of the Dragon Quest series. Enix also began as a publisher, rather than the commmon style of in house game design. Enix's third video game would put them on the map forever. Dragon Quest. Enjoy!
