It is a privilege to welcome the iconic deaf swimmer and Reality TV personality Matt Klotz as a guest on The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Matt discovered his passion for swimming at an early age and went on to compete for Louisiana State University. He went on to make his debut in the 2013 Summer Deaflympics in Bulgaria, where he claimed two gold medals in the men's 100m and 200m backstroke, alongside a bronze medal in the men's 400m individual medley event. Four years later, Matt competed in the 2017 Summer Deaflympics in Samsun, Turkey, where he won five medals, including three gold. In 2018, Matt Klotz shattered two deaf world records during the US National Swimming Championship and was awarded the 2018 ICSD Deaf Sportsman of the Year by the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf. He also competed in the 2019 ICSD World Deaf Swimming Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and the 2021 Summer Deaflympics in Caxias do Sul, Brazil. During the 2021 event, Matt took home nine medals, including three gold medals in men's 50m freestyle, men's 50m backstroke, and men's 100m backstroke events. Last year, Matt traveled to Tokyo, Japan, to compete in the 2025 Summer Deaflympics, where he won 10 medals, including five Gold, and broke three World Records (50m backstroke, 4x100 mixed free and medley relays. Throughout his four Deaflympic appearances, he earned 32 total medals and is one away from the most in Deaflympic history. In 2023, Matt Klotz made history as the first deaf and hard-of-hearing houseguest on Big Brother USA's twenty-fifth season. Matt made it to 100 days, outlasted many of his fellow competitors, including Survivor legend Cirie Fields, and won one Head-of-Household competition, two VETOs, and $5,000 before losing the winning title to friend and ally Jag Bains. But he also made history as the first deaf and hard-of-hearing Runner-Up. On this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Matt Klotz spoke about competing in the Deaflympics, his bond with Cirie in the Big Brother 25 house, and his passion for fitness.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.
It's not just a First of the Month recording - it's a First of the Month recording during the Summer of Cotton! After Sunday night's passionate discussion about the Travelers Championship and TPC River Highlands, it's only right that this Wednesday episode begins with a recap of Viktor Hovland's playoff win over Scottie Scheffler. Andy and Brendan discuss the one-hole finish on Monday morning and (sarcastically) wonder if Scottie actually hit his approach "too close" to the hole, forcing him to miss a four-footer to extend the event. They give Viktor Hovland his flowers before transitioning to this week's schedule, packed with Open qualifying, a senior major, and perhaps the PGA Tour's most preeminent "Track 2" event. Brendan runs down the early results from the Open Championship Qualifying Series, where podcast favorite Matthew Jordan has found his way into the field at Royal Birkdale! The Bryan brothers were among those who did not qualify, but that didn't stop the YouTube chat from badgering the R&A to show more of their shots on Tuesday afternoon's livestream. At the John Deere Classic, Zach Johnson is set to make his 24th start at his home event. He chose to skip out on this year's U.S. Senior Open in order to play the Deere and provided plenty of color in his pre-tournament press conference. Jordan Spieth also took to the microphone to pop Long Island golf fans and golf gamblers alike, even though he is a FanDuel Sportsbook ambassador in his free time. Andy shares his "5 Guys to Monitor This Week," leading with a former Deere champion and a big-name player making his professional debut. Lastly, PJ pops in for a brief preview of the U.S. Senior Open at Scioto Country Club as we all wait to see what's next for Michael Block on the Champions Tour. This was a fine Saturday crossword by Adrian Johnson. There were no daunting, grid-spanning answers, and it was not the most difficult Saturday we've seen, but the clues were sufficiently cryptic to make for an entertaining solve. We needed the crosses to figure out 17A, Kitchen project with minimal cleanup, ONEPOTMEAL; likewise with 7D, Persian poet who wrote the "Masnavi", RUMI; and only one of our cohosts (hint: not Mike) knew 58D, Super Bowl X M.V.P. ___ Swan, LYNN.All in all, another excellent piece of work from Adrian Johnson.Show note imagery: Beware The LEGOBATMAN!We love feedback! Survivor 50 runner-up Jonathan Young joins The Exclusive to reflect on his emotional Final Tribal Council loss to Aubry and why he believes modern Survivor juries may value “middle” gameplay differently than aggressive strategic control. The Survivor 42 alum opens up about evolving beyond the “challenge beast” label this season, talking with Boston Rob before the game, and why he thought his more flexible and socially active approach would resonate with the jury. Jonathan also reacts to Aubry's underdog story dominating the finale conversation, shares his thoughts on jury dynamics and Ponderosa influence, and breaks down the brutal immunity challenge where he threw up mid-competition before pulling out the win anyway. Plus, he discusses redeeming himself in fire-making against Rizo, the difficulty of reliving the finale, and why he's still ready to play Survivor again “as soon as Mr. Jeff calls.”

In 2025, Hermiston High's Leroy Lozano Mejia quietly became someone the Washington distance scene could no longer ignore. The sophomore entered the fall as a sleeper and left it with authority. Built on patience and aerobic strength, he doesn't chase attention. He shows up, does the work, and lets races speak for him. After running 15:36 and finishing 11th at the 3A state meet as a freshman, Leroy took a clear step forward in his sophomore cross-country season. He won the Battle of the 509 Invitational in Spokane against a strong field. He followed that with a fourth-place finish at Nike Hole in the Wall, running 14:55 on one of the most honest courses in the country. By November, the progression was undeniable. At the Washington 3A State Championships, he finished runner-up in 15:10. From 11th to second in one year. Built slowly. Earned daily. But the story isn't just about results. On the track, the contrast is still there. A 9:15 3200 shows real strength. A 4:23 mile leaves space to grow. And instead of running from that tension, Leroy leans into it.In this episode of The Sunday Shakeout, we talk about discipline as a daily choice, not a personality trait. About backing words with actions. And about the strange truth runners don't always admit — that pain, when chosen, can become addictive.Tap into the Leroy Lozano Mejia Special. Every few years, a high school runner comes along who forces the entire country to look toward one place. This fall, that place was Flagstaff, Arizona, and the runner was Yohanes Van Meerten.Yohanes is a prominent high school distance runner from Flagstaff High School in Arizona, who just finished an outstanding junior season. We're not kidding when we say outstanding: he was the runner up at Nike Cross Nationals, the highest finish ever for an Arizona athlete at the meet.He also won the Arizona state championship, setting an overall course record and becoming the first runner in state history to run a 5,000m race in under 15 minutes. He set a course record at the Mt. Sac Invitational, running three miles in 14:10.10. His outdoor PRs include 4:26 in the mile, 9:14 in the 3200m, and 14:28 in the 5,000m.Yohanes was born in Ethiopia and adopted into the U.S. at age one. His story is unique as he emerged as one of the top national high school runners during his junior year, following the impressive 14:28 performance in the 5000m at Nike Outdoor Nationals last spring. He's Arizona's fastest. Vista Rise Collective Joins Tahoe TAP to Discuss Rebrand, Advocacy & Community Impact The Tahoe TAP podcast — hosted by longtime locals and media personalities Mike Peron and Rob Galloway — returns with an intriguing new episode featuring Briana Vallejo of Vista Rise Collective, formerly known as Live Violence Free. After kicking off the show with a quick rundown of the latest Lake Tahoe happenings, the hosts welcomed Vallejo to talk about the organization's recent rebrand and ongoing mission to provide support, resources, and prevention programs for survivors of domestic and relational violence. Vallejo's connection to the work runs deep. She first joined the organization in 2016 as an Alpine Advocate while finishing her Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Nevada, Reno — all while holding the title of Miss Lake Tahoe in the Miss America Organization. Just months earlier, she was named 1st Runner-Up to Miss Nevada 2016. After nearly eight years serving the Alpine County satellite office, Vallejo transitioned to the South Lake Tahoe headquarters as Community Relations Coordinator. Today, she is a driving force behind Vista Rise Collective's outreach, education, and partnerships across the region. A survivor herself, Vallejo has used her story to spark change nationwide. Her TEDx Talk, “Preventing Teen Dating Violence from the Inside Out,” propelled her onto stages across the country as a sought-after keynote speaker. Outside of her advocacy work, she resides in Bear Valley with her husband — a local Fire Captain — and their two children, ages 4 and nearly 2. Listeners can tune in to hear more about Vista Rise Collective's expanded vision, upcoming community events, and how locals can get involved in supporting their mission.
Big Brother 27 runner-up Vince Panaro breaks down his journey to the finale with host Sharon Tharp. From his close relationship with Morgan to his emotional roller coaster at the endgame, Vince reflects on his HOH wins, jury perception, and where things stand now outside the house.
The 2000s gave us some of the biggest names and boldest ideas in science fiction—space operas that redefined the genre, cyberpunk evolutions, and near-future thrillers that feel eerily relevant today. But here's the twist: not every great book of the decade made it onto the Hugo, Nebula, or Locus ballots. In this episode, Jim continues the series by uncovering the real gems of the 2000s—one Best and one Runner-Up from each year—that critics and fans adored but the awards somehow overlooked. From planetary epics to biotech thrillers, from mind-bending hard SF to character-driven adventures, these are the novels that deserved far more recognition than they received.Which of these overlooked masterpieces have you read? Which ones will be jumping onto your TBR after this episode?
