Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 30th December. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. NORTHVOLT BATTERY PLANT SPARKS INTO LIFE, A FIRST FOR EUROPE - Sweden's Northvolt said on Wednesday its new gigafactory in northern Sweden has assembled its first battery cell, making it the first European company to design and manufacture a battery on the continent. - The cell is of a prismatic cell format - a variety of thinner and lighter battery - and came off the assembly line on Tuesday. - Northvolt CEO Peter Carlsson had told Reuters that the new factory would produce a battery this year "even if it means the first battery is made on New Year's Eve". - The company is aiming for the Skelleftea plant to achieve production capacity of 60 gigawatt hours (GWh) as it aims for at least a 20-25% market share in Europe by 2030. Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/technology/northvolt-produces-first-battery-cell-sweden-gigafactory-2021-12-29/ - Tesla is due to launch its first factory in Europe shortly and Asian rivals have significant operations in Poland and Hungary - but no European firm had yet operated a significant facility until now. - The new factory, dubbed "Northvolt Ett" (Northvolt One) in Swedish, already employs 500 people and will likely have as many as 3,000 staff once it reaches full capacity. - The Swedish company, which has already raised funding of several billion euros, was founded in 2016 by Carlsson and Italian Paolo Cerruti, both former Tesla employees. - Its location, some 200 km from the Arctic Circle, was chosen because it is near important sites of renewable production in northern Sweden, including hydropower. Original Source : https://www.euronews.com/next/2021/12/31/northvolt-powers-up-europe-s-first-homegrown-ev-battery-gigafactory-in-a-bid-to-beat-tesla US: VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 GROSS RESERVATIONS EXCEED 40,000 - Volkswagen of America announced that the ID.4 model is among the fastest-selling VW vehicles in the U.S. with nine out of ten buyers identifying as first-time EV buyers. The number of gross reservations (since the ID.4 introduction in March 2021) has increased to more than 40,000 (as of mid-December), out of which over 15,000 cars were sold. - Assuming that there were not many resignations, there are still some 25,000 ID.4 buyers waiting for Volkswagen to ramp up production and sales, which is not easy considering production constraints and high demand also in Europe. - The good news is that in 2022, the company intends to launch localized production of the ID.4 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Battery cells for the cars will be supplied by SK Innovation's SK On from the new battery plant in Commerce, Georgia. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/557901/us-volkswagen-id4-reservations-40000/ 2022 LUCID AIR ELECTRIC CAR REVIEW: VEHICLE IS EXTRAORDINARY - By the middle of 2022, the Lucid Air electric luxury sedan may be the best car in the world. - After a day driving the new EV and another touring Lucid's Silicon Valley HQ/tech center, I'm convinced the fast, elegant and advanced Air is, like the iPhone, one of those rare products that won't just succeed: It will change its industry, inspiring customers to demand more, forcing companies to do better. - I can't dismiss the Lucid EV's early-production software glitches. An automaker's Prime Directive is to produce vehicles that open their doors and drive off on the first attempt, just as a telephone that struggles with audio calls is flawed, no matter how marvelous its other capacities. But five years from now, nobody will remember the glitchy door handles I experienced in early-production vehicles. Original Source : https://eu.freep.com/story/money/cars/mark-phelan/2021/12/29/2022-lucid-air-care-electric-vehicle-luxury-sedan-review-price/9016627002/ EUROPE'S BEST-SELLING EV IS ... THE TESLA MODEL 3 - The Tesla Model 3 has only been in Europe for a couple of years now, but it has been an instant hit. In 2021, it is expected to be the best-selling EV there, topping competitors like the Volkswagen ID.3 and the Renault Zoe, according to a new report. You can see why Tesla CEO Elon Musk is so anxious to get Tesla's factory in Germany up and running. - That report, published in Automotive News, also says that, unsurprisingly, Tesla will be the best-selling EV brand, too, though Volkswagen will be the best-selling EV company, by virtue of selling EVs not just with the Volkswagen marque but also electric Audis, Cupras, Skodas, and Porsches, too. - Sales of the Model 3 jumped 84 percent to 113,397 through November, according to data from JATO Dynamics market researcher. Volkswagen's ID3 compact hatchback is likely to be at No. 2. ID3 sales rose 125 percent to 63,109 in the first 11 months. The Renault Zoe, 2020's best-selling EV is on track to be No. 3. Through 11 months, Zoe sales were 60,551, down 27 percent. Original Source : https://jalopnik.com/europes-best-selling-ev-is-the-tesla-model-3-1848287478 TESLA'S POTENT AMD RYZEN UPGRADE ARRIVES STATESIDE FOR MODEL 3, MODEL Y - We are now learning that the first Ryzen-equipped Teslas are rolling out of Tesla's factory in Fremont, California. - The information comes to us via Teslascope, which posted an image of the vehicle system information screen confirming the inclusion of a Ryzen CPU. For those not in the know, the Ryzen (formerly Atom) is responsible for handling infotainment duties on Tesla EVs. It's directly responsible for the screen's responsiveness when activating menus, playing games, loading apps like YouTube or Netflix, and swiping around the navigational map. - The first Model 3 and Y vehicles with MCU3 (Infotainment Computer with AMD Ryzen) are now being produced and delivered in North America! - One other notable change coming alongside the Ryzen chip is the inclusion of a new, smaller Li-ion battery to power the vehicle's 12-volt system. This replaces the antiquated 12-volt lead-acid batteries found in almost every other internal combustion engine vehicle and previous Teslas. The Li-ion battery, which is shared with newer Model S and Model X vehicles, weighs just 4 pounds compared to 27 pounds for its lead-acid predecessor and should last the life of the car (instead of 2 to 4 years). Original Source : https://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-ryzen-tesla-model-3-model-y TESLA ON TRACK TO MEET BUFFALO JOB TARGET, AVOID $41 MILLION PENALTY - Tesla Inc. is on track to meet its employment goal at its South Buffalo factory and avoid a $41.2 million penalty, according to new job figures from the state. - The company had 1,536 full-time jobs at its South Park Avenue factory on Nov. 10, along with 21 part-time positions. - That tops the 1,460 jobs that Tesla was required to have in Buffalo by the end of the year under its agreement with the state in exchange for spending more than $950 million to build and equip the plant. - With Tesla's solar energy business now stagnating at levels that are less than half of what they were five years ago, the company has been shifting other types of work to the Buffalo plant. - It also has hired hundreds of people to work on its autonomous driving programs for electric vehicles, although many of those positions are for data annotation work that only requires a high school diploma. - the state subsidies for the Tesla factory work out to more than $620,000 per full-time job. (Season 4) Minisode 3 [Intel & AMD Duopoly Mini-Arc] We've yelled at Intel, now we'll yell at AMD to be fair. AMD has been innovating left and right in the PC space: their Ryzen CPUs have been displacing Intel's hold of the market, and their (RDNA2-based) GPUs have been giving NVIDIA a kick in the pants for their pricing. ...So wait, why are we complaining about them? In This Episode…We have Computex going on this week and while AMD did have some great announcements; I feel tech and gaming influencers were hailing AMD's praises and a little early for FSR. First, we do not know if it is better than DLSS. If history is any indicator, then it is not going to be better. Second, AMD is not using any machine learning or AI, so I am impressed with Overwatch and No Man's Sky updates! This week Jeff is accompanied by Steve (the Devil's Chicken, himself) and they are discussing everything happening in the world of tech, computers, gaming, craft beer and cocktails.
In the regular show we talk at length about the recent AMD announcements including the RX 6700 XT, Fidelity FX suite and the addition of Smart Access Memory to the older 3000 series Ryzen CPUs. Next topic is about a German website selling the 11700K long before official release. Finishing off the news with the GTX 970 rise to value on the secondary market. No Gaming news this week so Nic continues describing his obsession with F1 after the acquisition of a new steering wheel. It is the best of times. It is the worst of times. That is if you are hoping to build a high-performance gaming PC. Some of the best PC components have either just been released or will release in the very near future. However, it is nearly impossible to get them.AMD announced its new line of hardware. The company claims that the new line of video cards will compete directly with their NVIDIA equivalents, with the Radeon RX 6800 being comparable to the RTX 3070, the Radeon RX 6800 XT being comparable to the RTX 3080, and the Radeon RX 6900 XT being comparable with the RTX 3090. But, of course, in grand AMD tradition, the prices are far below those of NVIDIA. Tom's Hardware has not had the opportunity to test these cards out, though, so the comparisons are currently based on AMD's info. The company also officially took the wraps off of its next-generation Ryzen chips: AMD Ryzen 5000 series, based on the new Zen 3 architecture. The prices will range from $299 for the Ryzen 5 model (no more Ryzen 3) to $799 for the Ryzen 9 model. AMD is touting higher clock speeds, more instructions per clock, 7nm architecture (closer together, more transistors per inch). Most interesting is the synergy between the new Radeon GPU and the new Ryzen CPU. This will provide fast access to one another's memory and will give a 13% speed bump over Intel chip or previous AMD chip. Again, this is based on the company's claims, not independent verification. But you cannot get the NVIDIA cards, and we fear the same thing will be the case with the AMD models. Within minutes of becoming available, they're gone - sold to scalpers. An $800 card is then sold for $1500 on eBay. The issues have even made the 2080 way overpriced because of the lack of 3080 inventory issues. Because of this, it is possibly the worst time to build a high-end PC because of these inventory issues. AMD is trying to take steps to avoid scalpers and bots, but legitimate demand could possibly produce the same results.

Show #871 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 19th August 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. LUCID SUV SPOTTED "Driving through Pescadero someone came across a Lucid shoot and took these pics. They blocked off the road with CHP for the Lucid Air & Lucid SUV. The pics aren’t that great - direct quote: "My iPhone 10 zoom isn’t clear enough to show how beautiful these Lucid cars are. I’d buy one now!" The shoot appears to be in preparation for the reveal? Here they are. With differences in outdoor lighting, shadows, background, and taken with an iPhone 10 zoom it's nearly impossible to see the true colors." 8 photos. https://lucidowners.com/threads/here-they-are-lucid-air-suv-pics.39/ GENESIS EG80 ALL-ELECTRIC LUXURY SEDAN SPIED NEAR THE NURBURGRING "Genesis updated its flagship sedan earlier this year, etching the GV80 SUV's design onto the refreshed model. It debuted with two gas engines, and, outside the US, a diesel. However, new spy photos from near the Nurburgring show the luxury brand is developing another powertrain for the G80 – an all-electric one. " says Motor1: "There are zero details about the electric powertrain. We don't know how many motors it'll have, its range, or the battery pack's capacity. TheKoreanCarBlog.com reported last month that the eG80 would compete against cars like the Tesla Model S, Mercedes EQS, and others, and it'll arrive within two years. Genesis is also developing the ability to perform over-the-air firmware updates to the vehicle like Tesla does with its model, giving the eG80 the capability to change and improve a range of vehicle functions." https://www.motor1.com/news/439662/genesis-g80-all-electric-spy-photos/ BOLLINGER DOUBLES STAFF AND MOVES TO MICHIGAN "Bollinger Motors has quickly made itself at home since moving to Michigan from New York. From a studio space to a headquarters in Ferndale, both in the Metro Detroit area, it has continued to develop and show off prototypes of its all electric B1 sport ute and B2 pickup truck. Its staff has grown considerably, and its looming product portfolio has grown, too (now including an electric chassis cab based on the B2 for commercial applications)." writes Autoblog: "The move comes as Bollinger plans to double its workforce to about 80 team members by the end of the year. The all-electric B1 and B2 are designed for serious off-roading. They feature a dual-motor powertrain that delivers 614 horsepower and 688 pound-feet of torque, have a payload of over 5,000 pounds, and a towing capacity of 7,500 pounds. An adjustable hydro-pneumatic suspension and portal axles allow the driver to choose between 10 and 20 inches of ground clearance. They each feature a 120-kWh lithium-ion battery pack." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/08/18/bollinger-motors-new-headquarters-oak-park-michigan-staff-to-double TESLA TAPS TSMC AND BROADCOM FOR 7NM HPC PROCESSOR "The company is reporting teaming with Broadcom to make a new 7nm processor, something known as HW 4.0 -- which will power its next-gen Full Self Driving (FSD) computer. The new 7nm HPC chip will be made on TSMC's 7nm node and will be made later this year -- and put into cars in 2022 and beyond." says TweakTown.com: "Mass production on the new Tesla Motors FSD chip will begin in late 2021, which is mostly because TSMC is absolutely flooded with orders for its 7nm node. AMD is building its entire Ryzen CPU and Radeon GPU families of products on the 7nm node by TSMC, the next-gen Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles and their semi-custom APUs are being made by TSMC, and so much more on 7nm Tesla Motors' new HW 4.0 chip will also make use of TSMC's Integrated FanOut (InFo) packaging technology, something that will reduce the overall package surface area and allow for lower thermal resistance. It will use TSMC's latest System on Wafer (SoW) technology that doesn't require a substrate and PCB in the entire process." Is it HW4? Is it Dojo? ie for their servers? Is it both? https://www.tweaktown.com/news/74584/tesla-taps-tsmc-and-broadcom-for-7nm-hpc-processor-coming-in-2022/index.html EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT EVS Owning, Charging, Driving & Saving. http://newsroom.vw.com/vehicles/everything-you-wanted-to-know-about-evs-but-might-be-afraid-to-ask/ KANDI AMERICA ANNOUNCES DETAILS ON $10K EV FOR USA Kandi is offering a special promotion for the first 1,000 pre-orders for each model. The RT175-S smart charging system powers EVs to an 80 percent charge in 15 minutes on average and is the first charger on the U.S. market capable of Plug and Charge, a communications protocol enabling electric vehicles and charging equipment to communicate, authenticate and bill customers via the charging cable. No longer will drivers need an RFID membership card, smartphone application or credit card reader to pay for their charge. With Plug and Charge, a charging session can be automatically and securely billed from the moment the plug connects to the vehicle, regardless of the network operator. This advancement in charging technology streamlines and simplifies the charging experience, while improving customer data security. https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/new-tritium-dc-fast-charger-powers-electric-vehicles-to-80-percent-in-15-minutes-301114363.html ELECTRIFY AMERICA COLLABORATES WITH LOVE’S TRAVEL STOPS "Electrify America, the largest open direct current (DC) fast-charging network in the US will work with Love’s Travel Stops, the US’ industry-leading travel stop network, to bring public ultra-fast electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to seven locations in six US states." says Green Car Congress: "The seven charging stations, located in Oklahoma, New Mexico, Utah, Florida, New York and Arizona, will have a combined 28 EV chargers and be available for public use by early 2021; five locations are already open. The most recent Love’s station opening in Salina, Utah, helped complete a cross-country route of Electrify America chargers spanning from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. Depending on the location, Love’s customers will have access to chargers ranging in power from 150 kW to 350 kW." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/08/20200819-ea.html UK TAKES THE NEXT STEP IN CURBSIDE ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING "World-first technology that could unlock electric vehicle charging for people without driveways or garages is being trialed across London. Startup company Trojan Energy is installing 200 of its chargers across Brent and Camden. Each charge point is slotted into the ground with a flat and flush connection. The technology has no permanent footprint or street clutter as the hardware is only visible when a vehicle is charging." according to Electric Vehicle Research: "The technology consists of 2 parts - a charge point slotted into the ground, and a 'lance' which is inserted into the charge point in order to charge. The charger can provide charge rates from 2kW to 22kW, and up to 18 chargers can run in parallel from one electricity network connection" https://www.electricvehiclesresearch.com/articles/21466/uk-takes-the-next-step-in-curbside-electric-vehicle-charging JLR PROGRESSES PROJECT ZEUS TO PUSH FCEV FOR MID-2020 "Jaguar Land Rover is working with partners in the British government-sponsored ‘Zeus’ project to develop fuel cell versions of its larger vehicles. A drivable prototype is to be available shortly." says electrive: "JLR was among the carmakers that benefitted from £73.5 million in funding through the Advanced Propulsion Centre that the British government announced in June. In the case of Jaguar Land Rover, the company is using the money to further project Zeus to develop fuel cell technology. Autocar now reports that progress is being made as the first fuel cell concept to emerge from this project will probably be an SUV the size of the Range Rover Evoque. The next-generation Range Rover Evoque’s arrival is expected in the middle of the 2020s. JLR may then use the fuel cell technology for zero-emissions versions of larger models in the future." https://www.electrive.com/2020/08/18/jaguar-land-rover-project-zeus-makes-progress-on-fcevs/ You can listen to all 870 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.
