(Source: Sergiu Gatlan, June 6, 2024) Campaign Origin: Germán Fernández, a security researcher at CronUp, first spotted the ongoing campaign. Attackers use stolen credentials to compromise GitHub accounts and pose as cyber incident analysts. Modus Operandi: Attackers claim to steal data and create a backup. They rename repositories and add a README file instructing victims to reach out on Telegram for data recovery. GitHub Response: GitHub advises users to change passwords and enable two-factor authentication to secure their accounts. They recommend additional measures like passkeys for secure, passwordless logins, and reviewing account security logs for suspicious activity. Preventative Measures: Enable two-factor authentication. Add a passkey for secure, passwordless login. Review and revoke unauthorized access to SSH keys, deploy keys, and authorized integrations. Verify all email addresses associated with your account. Regularly review recent commits and collaborators for each repository. Manage webhooks on your repositories. Check for and revoke any new deploy keys. History of Attacks: This isn't the first time GitHub accounts have been compromised. In March 2020, hackers stole over 500GB of files from Microsoft's private repositories. In September 2020, a phishing campaign targeted GitHub users with fake CircleCI notifications to steal credentials and 2FA codes. Engagement Opportunity: Are you using all the recommended security measures for your GitHub account? Check your settings today and share your experience with us! Call to Action: Stay vigilant and regularly update your security practices. If you experience any suspicious activity, report it immediately to GitHub support. DuckDuckGo offers “anonymous” access to AI chatbots through new service https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2024/06/duckduckgo-offers-anonymous-access-to-ai-chatbots-through-new-service/ ---`Sure thing! Here's your flash briefing in bullet points: DuckDuckGo Launches AI Chat Service: DuckDuckGo introduces a new "AI Chat" service, allowing users to converse with mid-range large language models (LLMs) from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and Mistral. This service aims to preserve user privacy and anonymity while offering AI chatbot interactions. Privacy Measures in Place: DuckDuckGo ensures chats are anonymized by removing metadata and IP addresses. The company has agreements with model providers to delete any saved chats within 30 days and not use them for AI model training. Access and Usage: Users can access the AI Chat service for free within daily limits through the DuckDuckGo search engine, direct site links, or using "!ai" and "!chat" shortcuts. The AI Chat feature can be disabled in settings for users with accounts. Models Available: The service features OpenAI's GPT-3.5 Turbo, Anthropic's Claude 3 Haiku, Meta's Llama 3, and Mistral's Mixtral 8x7B. While these models are capable, they are known to produce inaccurate information, known as "confabulations." Utility and Limitations: Despite privacy protections, the utility of the service is questionable due to the tendency of available models to produce errors. More advanced models like GPT-4 are not included, potentially limiting the service's usefulness. Future Plans: DuckDuckGo hints at future paid plans that may include higher usage limits and access to more advanced AI models. Caution Advised: Users should verify the information produced by these AI chatbots, as they can generate text with limited and sometimes outdated information. DuckDuckGo advises against relying on AI Chat outputs for professional advice without additional verification. Muhstik Malware Targets Message Queuing Services Applications https://thehackernews.com/2024/06/muhstik-botnet-exploiting-apache.html ---`Flash Briefing: Muhstik Botnet Exploiting Apache RocketMQ Flaw to Expand DDoS Attacks Muhstik Botnet Overview: Muhstik targets IoT devices and Linux-based servers. Known for DDoS attacks and cryptocurrency mining. [Source: Aqua Security] Apache RocketMQ Vulnerability: CVE-2023-33246, a critical flaw with a CVSS score of 9.8. Allows remote code execution via RocketMQ protocol content or update configuration function. [Source: Aqua Security] Exploitation Process: Attackers gain initial access by exploiting the vulnerability. They execute a shell script from a remote IP, retrieving the Muhstik binary ("pty3"). [Source: Nitzan Yaakov, Security Researcher] Persistence Mechanisms: Malware binary copied to multiple directories. /etc/inittab file edited to restart processes during Linux server boot. Binary named "pty3" to masquerade as pseudoterminal and evade detection. Malware executed from memory (directories like /dev/shm, /var/tmp) to avoid leaving traces. [Source: Nitzan Yaakov] Capabilities and Objectives: Collects system metadata. Moves laterally over SSH. Establishes C2 communication via IRC for further instructions. Conducts flooding attacks to create denial-of-service conditions. Cryptomining detected as a secondary objective. [Sources: Aqua Security, Nitzan Yaakov] Current Exposure and Mitigation: 5,216 instances of Apache RocketMQ still vulnerable. Organizations should update to the latest version to mitigate threats. [Source: Aqua Security] Broader Security Advice: AhnLab Security Intelligence Center (ASEC) highlights poorly secured MS-SQL servers also targeted. Use strong, periodically changed passwords. Apply latest patches to prevent brute-force and vulnerability attacks. [Source: ASEC]

This tool can easily extract and expose sensitive data collected by Recall. Actionable Insight: Be vigilant when using new features and tools that collect data, as they may have hidden security risks. Recall Feature Overview: Microsoft announced the Recall feature on May 20, 2024, as part of the Copilot+ line of Windows 11-powered PCs. Recall takes screen snapshots every few seconds, uses OCR to extract information, and stores this data in an unencrypted SQLite database. Actionable Insight: Encrypt sensitive data locally and regularly audit new features for potential security risks. Security Pitfalls: Security researcher Kevin Beaumont demonstrated that exfiltration of Recall databases can be automated, making it easy for malware and hackers to access the data. He criticized Microsoft for enabling Recall by default and allowing it to be reactivated without user knowledge. Actionable Insight: Immediately disable features that pose security risks and monitor for unauthorized reactivation. TotalRecall Functionality: The tool copies Recall databases, extracts information like passwords and search terms, and summarizes this data. Hagenah does not plan to update the tool further, leaving its functionality as a proof of concept. Actionable Insight: Regularly review and understand the tools being used within your system to prevent potential data breaches. Microsoft's Response: Although Microsoft has emphasized security, their implementation of Recall falls short. The feature stores data locally in an unencrypted format, making it accessible to malware and unauthorized users. Actionable Insight: Push for vendors to improve security measures and hold them accountable for defaults that put user data at risk. Upcoming Release: Recall is` ---`scheduled for release on June 18, 2024. Security professionals hope Microsoft addresses the highlighted issues before the launch. Actionable Insight: Stay updated on new releases and security patches to ensure vulnerabilities are addressed before widespread adoption. Disabling Recall: Recall is enabled by default on Copilot+ devices, but users can disable it during initial setup or via Group Policy in enterprise environments. Actionable Insight: Ensure that all team members are aware of how to disable potentially risky features and implement these changes as part of security best practices. Engagement Suggestion: "Have you ever encountered a new feature that seemed more risky than beneficial? Share your experiences with us and let's discuss how to navigate these challenges together!"` Who are Qilin, the cybercriminals thought behind the London hospitals hack? https://www.group-ib.com/blog/qilin-ransomware/ ---`Flash Briefing: Qilin Ransomware Group NHS Attack: Cybercriminal group Qilin, a Russian-speaking ransomware gang, attacked NHS medical services provider Synnovis, disrupting hospital trusts and GPs across London. If based in Russia, British law enforcement faces challenges due to Russia's non-extradition policy and lack of cooperation on cybersecurity matters post-Ukraine invasion. [Source: The Guardian] Ransomware as a Service (RaaS): Qilin operates on a RaaS model, providing tools and infrastructure to independent hackers for a cut of the ransom, typically 15-20%. They demand ransoms ranging from $50,000 to $800,000, often using spear phishing for initial network access. [Source: Group-IB] Past Attacks: Since October 2022, Qilin has attacked over 50 organizations, including Robert Bernard in France and Dialog in Australia. Notable incidents include the Big Issue publisher attack, with 500GB of data leaked after a refused ransom. [Source: Group-IB] Rust and Go Languages: Qilin leverages Rust and Go programming languages for their ransomware, making it harder to detect and analyze. This allows them to customize attacks for different operating systems like Windows and Linux. [Source: Group-IB] Double Extortion Technique: Qilin uses double extortion, encrypting data and exfiltrating sensitive information to pressure victims into paying the ransom. They have a proprietary Dark Leak Site (DLS) for publishing stolen data. [Source: Group-IB] Affiliate Management: Qilin's affiliate panel includes sections for managing targets, creating ransomware samples, and coordinating attacks. Affiliates get 80-85% of the ransom, depending on the amount. [Source: Group-IB] Security Recommendations: Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Implement MFA and credential-based access solutions. Regular Backups: Conduct regular data backups. Email Protection: Use tools like Group-IB's Business Email Protection to [---]()counter phishing. Advanced Detection: Employ AI-based solutions for real-time intrusion detection. Patch Management: Regularly update and apply security patches. Employee Training: Educate employees about cybersecurity risks and phishing signs. Incident Response: Contact experts immediately if attacked; avoid paying ransoms. [Source: Group-IB] Listener Engagement: Question for Listeners: Have you ever encountered a phishing email at work? How did you handle it? Stay vigilant and keep your systems secure!`

I have a storage problem. One DLink NAS with 500GB of space (10+ years old), one Apple Time Capsule 2G (~5 years), 2TB of dropbox space, 2TB external drives, memory cards, iCloud, google drive and a full hard drive on my laptop. Age is a big risk tied to moving disks - the older they are - the higher the risk of failure becomes. Bringing my data home - to much risk to have it in the cloud:Privacy Security (vendor and me)Bought a Synology Disk Station 1821+ and 4 x 4TB WD Red Pro disks (5 yrs warranty and fast). After some waiting it finally arrived yesterday and during my lunch break I set it up - and that is actually really easy. Put a disk in a casette. Put the casette into the unit. Connect it to the network and power it on. That's it. Software setup went fast. Needed to install Synologys latest software and create a volume. I decided to use SHR - Synology Hybrid Raid. Essentially a software raid - but gives you the advantage that you can use different hard drives in your raid setup and that can be handy later on. The 1821 has 8 bays but I only use 4 of them to start with. I will add additional drives as needed and in a years time bigger and faster driver will be available and I can easily upgrade. During the afternoon I started to copy data over to my new nas from my old DLink nas. I mounted (connected) both NASes to my mac and started to copy files. After a while my computer froze - I had to restart to get network connection back. This happened once more during the afternoon (of course in the middle of a call). I don't think this is caused by the Synology - it's is rather my USB3/ethernet card that gets warm or unstable with high load. It is pretty inefficient to copy or migrate data in this way. Data has to go on the wire from my old nas to my mac and then back out the wire to the Synology. I did some research and found that it is possible to mount the old nas straight on the nas and then copy the files directly. That is way more efficient and I could clearly see the how little load this caused in my network. During the day to day I will migrate remaining data on the old nas and on my Time Capsule. Move my backup from the time capsule to the Synology. Finally I will copy the data from one of my external drives onto the Synology as well. This should get my video and podcast archive in a great state and have it always online when I need it. Next steps is to move all files away from dropbox - the plan is to not extend my premium when the subscription ends in June/July. So far - happy with the unit. But will need to use it for a longer time and especially with a few of my remote use cases as a road warrior and also with and from my mobile devices such as the iPad and the iPhone. I hope you enjoyed to

LocationPick a place you are comfortable, whether it’s large or small. We recommend natural light and a view of some nature, but don’t sacrifice comfort or ergonomics for the best view.Think about what it’s next to and what makes the most sense for you. Maggie has selected an office location with the most windows that is furthest away from where her kids hang out, as it helps to avoid noise and distractions, but they also know where to find her if they need her. If your kids are younger you may need a place purposefully close. If you do not have a lot of space, get creative within your own personal space limitations. Consider re-doing a closet into an office closet, or even a mobile workstation so you can move around to different spaces as they are free.TechnologyYou need a big monitor. Or two. This is a worthwhile expense. Look for a used one before you buy a new one.You don’t need a $3,000 laptop, but don’t skimp either. $1,000 will get you a great one. Less than $500 and you’re likely to run into performance issues that won’t be worth the savings. It should have a large monitor unless you are going to just dock it.It should have a meaningful amount of RAM. At least 8GB.It should have a SSD, at least 500GB.It should have numerous external ports for connecting USB and HDMI cables.Get an external keyboard and mouse. It’s worth the investment.ErgonomicsGet a desk and chair combo that creates the right height. Maggie still uses her medela footrest from when she was nursing, you can also purchase one for about $20 on Amazon, or as Mike suggests you can use a box for free! The costs of not getting ergonomics right can be expensive, so give this some attention. Ignoring this could cost you doctor’s visits, rehab, or medication.Stuff + the miscellany:You don’t need other gadgets unless they are solving a specific and material problem.Minimize your office supplies. So much is done digitally that you really don’t need a lot of office supplies.Keep the space clear of crap. Whether it’s the corner of a room or you have an entire room, keep it as clear and clean as possible. Lots of studies suggest this helps your focus, and for those easily distracted this is clutch!Reuse existing things you already have vs buying new things. Repurpose an old desk, use an unused dresser for storage, repaint a bookshelf.Consider used first. Now that schools are going back you may find a great used desk or monitor online. It's your Destiny (sorry, that's the best opening we had). The GamePitch duo jumps right into the action this week, starting with Destiny’s big roadmap update. But it doesn’t stop there as your favorite hosts break down Nintendo’s Pokemon event, JD cries tears of joy, and Eli shreds Final Fantasy. Unsatisfied with ripping on Square's games alone, the hosts dig in on Hollyweird and Tom Holland’s new obsession with Marky-Mark. A slew of red cards end the show with Eli giving the Sony marketing department a freebie: “Play has no limits...unless you like COD and have a 500GB hard drive.” Project-Nerd Gaming Podcasts are here! A weekly Podcast where Apple Certified Consultants look at the Mac Tech industry. Lively discussion about working with Macs and IOS devices. Joe Saponare, Sam Valencia, Jerry Zigmont share their “real world” experiences about IT support. Topics: -Jerry gets beat up on social media for his browsing habits -TidBITS is having a membership drive! Please join us in supporting TidBITS so they can continue to well written, relevant Apple focused content. https://tidbits.com/membership/benefits/ -Sam had to turn his back on his Mac recently because his 2016 MacBook Pro had to be sent in for repair under the keyboard repair program. He reported very positive results overall. A couple of things he missed were related to not syncing Desktop & Documents to iCloud and some websites not displaying as expected in iOS. -Inevitably, the conversation steers towards Joe’s “janky” 15” MacBook Pro and the built-in cooling vent. He also talks about the repair performed in office, thanks to tools and guides from iFixIt. -Jerry comes up with a new Command Control Power drinking game -Joe specced a new MacBook Air for a client, who had almost 500GB of data. On the MacBook Air, this necessitates a $1000 upgrade to 1.5TB SSD. For comparison, he specced a MacBook Pro 13-inch Touch Bar & Touch ID with 1TB SSD (16GB memory in both) and found that the price was exactly the same: $2599. The MacBook Pro has the Touch Bar and much better performance, but for the same price the MacBook Air has better battery life and portability, more storage as configured and no Touch Bar which might be benefit to some people. So it comes down to trade-offs. See Gruber's take and the video comparison he linked to by Quinn Nelson -Joe’s tip of the week: earn Apple Gift Cards on the Barclaycard Visa® Signature with Apple Rewards. 3 points per dollar on all purchases made at Apple or iTunes, 2 points per dollar on restaurant purchases, and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases -Hazel by Noodlesoft is a product recommended by Jerry to create rules for folders. For instance, Jerry has a folder on his Desktop of his Mac that can do OCR, specifically with PDFs. He uses that along with PDF Pro from Smile Software. -Joe gets giddy when talking about Automator and AppleScript. He talks up using AppleScript to manage his status board at his office, where he posts photos of his adventures with Ashleigh. Jerry is concerned about how his staff reacts to Joe living the high life while they are at work. -Joe revisits his clients issue with the Share menu on an iMac Pro: the Share menu would appear, but it would be frozen, and the only way to dismiss would be to quit the app in question. At long last, the problem is solved. Joe shares the exciting conclusion. -Joe shares the solution to his longtime issue logging into sites with untrusted self-signed certificates. The message would show "This Connection Is Not Private" and you could click Show Details, then click Visit this Website, which would prompt for the login password. However, then it tries to reload the page and the same thing happens (This Connection Is Not Private...). Solution: use Private Browsing. This seems to solve the issue in the future, even when visiting a site in a normal browsing session i.e. without Private Browsing. -Not to bring the show down, Sam shares two stories of how his company and two separate clients parted ways. Both for different reasons but it led to a rough start to 2019. The team discusses the breakups and the benefit of ridding yourself of bad relationships before they bring you further down.

Plex Server on the Nvidia Shield Since the beginning a video server has been high on the HT Guys list of gear that everyone should have in their setups. Back then there was a product that did exactly what we wanted but it cost upwards of $50,000! The Kaleidescape was THE video server we all wanted. It had a great user interface with best looking experience. Over the years there have been many media center products come and go and we have tried many of them. There was Windows Media center which at one point had third party manufacturers building hardware with the player software installed. You still needed to buy a PC that had the server side. On the open source side was Xbox Media Center (XBMC) which turned your xbox into a media center. The XBMC (now known as Kodi) software was ported to many platforms with variants that included Media Portal, Tofu, and what we are going to talk about today, Plex. Our discussion consists of two parts, the hardware (in this case the Nvidia Shield) and the software Plex. By the way, this is not a full discussion on Plex or a full review of the shield. We did do a review of Plex in January of this year. You can check it out here. Plex On the software side is Plex. Plex is a free client-server media player system and software suite comprising two main components. The Plex Media Server organizes your content and streams it to the Plex Player. The players can either be the Plex Apps available for mobile devices, smart TVs, and streaming boxes, or the web UI of the Plex Media Server called Plex Web App. Although the free version of Plex is quite capable, you'll want to buy the Plex pass ($4.99/ month, $39.99/year, and $149.99/lifetime) to really get you the Kaleidescape killer. With the PlexPass you get: Offline Access, Music Enhancements including lyrics, trailers and extras, and early access to new features and updates just to name a few. The full list is available on their site Nvidia Shield On the hardware side is the Nvidia Shield (Buy Now $199). The Shield is an Android TV based set-top box targeted for both home entertainment and gaming. We will strictly be focusing on the entertainment aspect of the shield and specifically Plex. But for completeness the shield does offer android games and entertainment apps like Netflix (4K HDR supported), Hulu, Pandora, Youtube 4K and others. Two Products in One A big advantage the Shield has over other setups is that it can be both the server and client. In Ara's setup he has the Plex Server running on his Mac mini and he uses the AppleTVs as clients. Not a big deal, but what if you want a simple solution. Take the Shield, you can buy the stripped down model for $199 and add an external hard drive for say another $50 and you have server and client that you can connect to your HDTV in about 30 minutes. If you have other TVs you can add an AppleTV, Roku, or FireTV and you'll have access to your media on every TV in your home. Plus there are mobile apps for access both inside and outside the home. For more info on Plex go to their website at Plex.TV Setup This is not a step by step tutorial. There are plenty of resources available online for that so we decided to document our process to give you an indication of the effort required. We also created a video of the process that helps in conveying this information. It's embedded below. We copied the movies that we had onto a 3TB Western Digital hard drive ($115), connected that to the Shield, connected ethernet, and power and started the process. The process consisted of signing into our Google account and then upgrading the firmware. This took about twenty minutes. Then we signed into our plex account and finished configuring the server. That took about five minutes. The plex setup requires you make a connection with another device like a laptop or tablet. The last thing we had to do was point our server to the content. That also was done with an external device. The interface for the server is HTML so you need a browser to communicate with it. Once that was done, the server began cataloging the movies and adding the meta data. One thing to consider about using the 16GB Shield is that it does not have a lot of space for files. Fortunately you can add a SD card for this information. The shield can't write to a PC formatted disc which is how the WD drive is formatted. You could allow the shield to format the drive and then it will be available to the shield to for metadata but then is becomes a pain to copy your content to it. Because of this we decided to go with the SD card. You can also buy the shield with the 500GB internal drive for an additional $100 (Buy now $300). If you want to add more content to the drive you'll need to disconnect it and take it to a machine that has the movie on it and manually copy it over. You can also use networked storage which may be the way to go but that adds cost. Use Plex looks beautiful! Here is a slideshow of what it looks like on our system. We did notice that the client interface on the Shield looked better than that of the AppleTV, which already looked great! As far as performance goes, we were able to stream four concurrent movies (H.264 6-10 Mbps each) with no issues whatsoever. We are sure that the server could have done more. We then transcoded three streams from 1080p down to 320X240 and watched them from outside the network. Again no issues. The Shield is a beast! If you want Blu-ray quality and HD Audio this is where you may have some issues. Rob H, from the AV Rant Podcast, exchanged a few emails with us on this subject. From Rob: But for folks who want the full HD Audio quality or who want Atmos and DTS:X, currently, as far as I'm aware, you have to use the Plex Media Player, and that is currently only available with a Plex Pass, and you can only get it for Windows, Mac, or one of the 64-bit "Embedded Platforms". You should be OK on the video quality side though. The Plex server had no issues with MKV files. Although we only watched one at a time. The only complaint we had was the controller. To be fair it's main use in life is a game controller and they do sell a “TV” centric controller for $50. If you don't have a universal remote solution in your home theater setup we would recommend buying the TV controller. It will make navigation much smoother. In the meantime we will use our Simple Remote. Bottom Line There is no question in our mind that for about $300 you can have the Kaleidescape experience in your own home. Add additional zones for as little as $100 or for free on your mobile device. Let's compare that to what a Kaleidescape system cost. Server unit, starts at $27,000. Players, $3,500. It's no wonder that Kaleidescape is closing their doors. It was a great product but technology closed the gap and now we don't have to be millionaires to enjoy our content how and when we want.
Well money has finally settled down a little bit. I went ahead and got a full year payment down for this podcast so expect a flood of mixes from all sorts of different genres. Probably staying clear of electro house and shorter mixes for the time being. It's fun, but I want to dive into some other stuff that isn't just raging 24/7. Enjoy! ALSO! If you have any older episodes you love streaming make sure to download them soon. I only have 500GB of space and I plan on dropping tons of mixes so I am going to have delete old ones and some tough decisions will have to be made about some classics. Thanks for understanding! We are on the verge of the release of a number of games that feel like they have been in production forever, and they couldn't be more different. Handheld Movie Server We both took vacations recently and decided to leave the laptops behind. But that didn't mean we didn't want to take our content with us. If you have an iPad you are limited to 64GB at present and with Andriod many devices allow you to add storage through SD cards. While that gives you a potentially unlimited amount of storage its impractical for large libraries. What are you to do? All (or most of your) Movies in the Palm of Your Hand Seagate has got you covered. They sell the Seagate Wireless Plus. Its a hard drive with a built in web server that can stream your content to all your mobile devices. The 1 Terabyte version sells for $160 (Buy Now). They also have a 500 GB and 2TB version selling for $140 and $199 respectively. Features: Wirelessly streams your favorite digital media to tablets, smartphones, computers and more Synchronizes with Dropbox and Google Drive to bring the cloud with you Streams up to three different HD movies to three devices at the same time Connects throughout your home to DLNA devices, Samsung Smart TVs, and AirPlay Integrates with the free Seagate Media app for iPad, iPhone, Kindle Fire, Windows 8/TR tablets and computers, and Android tablets and smartphones Delivers up to 10-hour battery life Setup The drive was connected to our home base computer and nearly 500GB of video and music were copied to it. The copy went pretty fast with the USB 3.0 interface. Since we were on a Mac we did have to reformat it so that both Macs and PCs could read and write to the drive when connected via USB. We copied the music to a music folder and the movies to a movie folder. When done the device indexes the content and presents the name and any album art that the file may have with it. We then disconnected and turned on the wifi feature and saw the Seagate Wireless Network show up when we scanned wifi networks. We connected with no issues and immediately were able to stream content via the Seagate app on our mobile devices. You can mix and match OS as well as mobile device platforms. The first thing we did was select the settings widget and change the SSID and add a password. If you are using the device where wifi is available you can have the Media Server share the internet connection so you don't lose Internet access while connected to it. Performance Navigation was simple, you can select content by Music, Movies, Photos, then by genres if you want. There is a nice search feature as well. Finally you can just browse the drives folders if you wish. Once the selection is made the media starts playing in a few seconds. On the airplane we had three people connected and we streamed HD content that was recorded at about 8Mbps. We observed no issues with the data whatsoever. On our cruise ship we had four people connected and had no issues either. You mileage may vary as that environment was pretty quiet as far as noise goes. The iOS app worked quite well but we seemed to like the web interface better. You simply put seagatewireless.com in the URL and you are presented with an interface that is similar to the app version. The battery life was nowhere near the 10 hours that is on the packaging. It was more like four hours of continuous use. Conclusion The Seagate Wireless Plus drive is a great solution for those who want to carry very large media libraries with them and have access to them from any mobile device. Small and easy to carry, simple to use, and decent battery life make this an HT Guys favorite!

Guy Jr gets cool stuff for his birthday and Big Guy doesn't. He's hoping that someone rich, drunk, or crazy (or some combination) will get him that Mac Pro or high end 27-inch iMac that's on his Amazon Wishlist (http://amzn.com/w/3736SPSFP62BA). But he's not holding his breath. Gaz WAS holding his breath and fortunately he stopped so we could do the show. His external drive is too small because Apple gave him a 750GB instead of a 500GB in the Mac mini he ordered some time ago, so it's APPLE'S fault! Tim Cook has his first year in and apparently some people have odd reasons why they don't think he's doing a good job. And what hoops you have to jump through to get Lion if your Mac can't run Mountain Lion.
First show of the new year. China and Google are no longer friends. CES banter, Doyle and Dave were there. 125,000 people, 3000 vendor exhibits. The show felt better. Doyle went for the parties. EBooks were big. 3DTV was big. Home electricity monitoring systems were big. Monitoring electricity usage causes drops in usage. Electricity bills were high in Colorado! There are still many standards and even iPhone apps for real-time reporting. 3DTV: Way too early - the dorky first gen. Not just glasses, but *their* glasses. Polarized vs. Non-polarized? Sports might be big, ESPN will have a 3D channel. 2010 predictions. Michael: A big fat year for Apple. iSlate will be a game changer. A leaked rumor names a genre (iSlate). Does Apple count replacement iPhone units against sales? If so, there were like 9 phones sold. Doyle says his Kindle is horrible for anything other than reading words. Dave - transition from keyboards to no keyboards. The convertible tablet PC was cool. Multi-touch gestures were hot at CES. Doyle's prediction: Twitter will have an exit of some kind and will become a feature. Bing? Facebook? Google? Who knows? Apple starts shipping the Magic Mouse with all Macs. Dave - 2010 will mark the beginning of the end of netbooks. More focused devices will eat their market. Is the netbook for the consumer, not the producer? Imagine these smart devices with much bigger screens (DROID, Nexus One, iPhone). Doyle's laptop is 500GB, but with a cloud based device, storage is irrelevant. Energy storage is a huge industry. There has to be a better way. Wireless power in Starbucks would be great. We'd choose places based on power. RCA was showing battery tech that gets power via WIFI. (WHAT? That's VOODOO!). If there's enough power to work, not charge, the world would be great! Power is a big problem. Doyle gives NBC credit, he thinks it was a trial balloon. Way too much credit Doyle. Conan has the Twittershphere behind him. Michael thinks Conan should go the way of Adam Carolla - direct to internet content. None of us watch late night TV regularly anyway, so time segment doesn't matter.
