It can be said that society is losing itself in the pursuit of a "fair" world. Our men are losing strength and becoming "frail" based on the narrative that is moving through the collective at this time. In this episode I sit down with Jeri and Tom (the Dude Dads) and hash this out. We talk into what's happening in the school system. How the family unit is moving through right now. What they are seeing with men these days in the world. How men can step in and become (remember) better leaders. What this means for society and so much more. It's a down to earth, real conversation, with 2 men living and breathing what they preech. Xo Enjoy Jeri and Tom have a story to tell. Two dudes just having conversations that hope to inspire other dudes to take control of their lives, step into their power and lead their families. They started their podcast, Dude Dads, because they had a lot of stories to tell and now are inspiring men everywhere with their message. There are stereotypes for just about everything when it comes to the horse world, and aging horses are no exception. We picture a hard keeper becoming increasingly thin over time, or maybe we imagine a recently retired athlete going out to a big pasture with a herd of other horses and immediately feeling content. But just like with every stereotype, these perceptions do not tell the full story, and can actually be harmful in the long run to our equine partners. In this episode, we dive into all things Golden Oldies. We aim to clarify the physiology behind the equine aging process, and debunk some common myths in the process (spoiler alert - not all old horses struggle with weight loss!). Our guest this week is Dr. Katie Sheats, an assistant professor of Equine Primary Care and a specialist in Equine Internal Medicine at NC State College of Veterinary Medicine. In addition to specializing in the care of older horses, Dr. Sheets also owns two senior horses in their 30s who live in her backyard. In short, she has an immense amount of both clinical and real-world experience when it comes to this topic, and she has an accordingly vast amount of knowledge to share. Here are just a few of the topics Caroline and Dr. Sheats discuss in this week's episode: What causes aging in horses? It's more than just the passing of time... How weight plays into horse health as they age How teeth condition and gut health factors in older horses Tips and tricks for good preventative care Common chronic illnesses in older horses (and how you can get the jump on them far before your horses turn Sr.) Arthritic and orthopedic issues in older horses Deciding when to retire your horse, and what that retirement might look like for them (it's not always just a big field and no work!) How to navigate the difficult decisions and conversations that one must face as horses near the end of their life
Eric's Perspective : A podcast series on African American art
In this episode, Eric sits down with artist, curator and professor; Jamaal Sheats. They discuss his background — growing up in Nashville, Tennessee, his interest in the arts, his educational background, attending Fisk University and ultimately ending up at Fisk University as a faculty member! Sheats sheds light on how at first he ‘ran' from the arts — wanting to be a business major, an entrepreneur but how he ultimately pursued his artistic passions and the role his parents played in encouraging him on his artistic path. They discuss the mentors he had that were instrumental in his life, the technique of repoussé, training and developing as an artist. The artists that helped inform his work and how he pays homage to his lineage and ancestors through it. They discuss his involvement at the prestigious institution of Fisk University — a historically black university, the art department that was established by Aaron Douglas, the impressive long list of alumni and its mission to educate and inspire the next generation of art leaders and advocates. The extensive collections held by Fisk, his role as an art professor, the programs and exhibitions that Sheats has curated throughout the years and his exciting plans for the future. For more visit: www.ericsperspective.comGuest Bio: Jamaal B. Sheats, MFA is Director and Curator of the Fisk University Galleries and an Assistant Professor in the Fisk University Art Department. An alumni of Fisk, both positions enable Sheats to work with students, faculty and the community in ways that integrate his expertise and passion for the arts, education, and mentorship. As a member of the Art Department he has taught Sculpture, Arts and Ideas, Drawing, and Independent Study courses for students with an interest in sub-specialties. In his director and curatorial appointment with the Fisk University Galleries, he successfully integrated the Arts into all academic disciplines and increased engagement with the Middle Tennessee community through novel and innovative approaches. Sheats' implementation of multi- and inter- disciplinary programs, such as the Fisk University STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) Series, Babies in the Gallery (BIG), Visiting Lecturer Series, and Gallery Ambassador Program for Fisk students and community members, are outcomes of this goal. During Sheats' 3-year tenure as Director and Curator of the Fisk University Galleries, he has also curated 15 art exhibitions; welcomed over 16,000 visitors from across the globe; created the Fisk University Galleries Fellowship for post-doctoral scholars; and built a continuous pipeline of charitable giving from the annual Friends of the Gallery Campaign that he instituted in 2016. In 2017 Sheats' led efforts to secure funding from the Ford Foundation and Walton Family Foundation to establish the Fisk University Museum Leadership Program, which is a 2-year certificate program that aims to diversify art museum leadership. Within the arts community Sheats is a well-known and respected artist who has maintained a strong and consistent domestic and international exhibition record for nearly two decades. Jamaal B. Sheats, MFA obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Art from Fisk University and a Master of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in Studio Art from the School of the Museum of Fine Art (SMFA)-Boston and Tufts University. Telly Justice and Mike Sheats worked together at Five & Ten in Athens Ga., where Justice worked her way up to chef de cuisine and Sheats was an AM chef. Once they started their own projects, the chefs knew that the strict brigade system, codified by Georges-Auguste Escoffier more than a hundred years ago, wouldn't be the right fit for their businesses. “In the kitchens that Mike and I came up in, there was not much room for challenging anything,” said Justice. For both Justice and Sheats, the rigidity of the structure left no room for mistakes and little room for being themselves. Telly is now chef/co-owner of HAGS, a small tasting menu restaurant in New York City “by Queer people for all people,” and Mike, with his wife Shyretha, runs The Plate Sale, a pop-up inspired by community events like plate sales, barbecues, and fish fries in his hometown of Athens. This conversation was recorded as a chef-to-chef conversation for the Plate Magazine print edition. You can read an edited version of this conversation (and see some awesome pictures!) in their magazine here. But a less edited version of the conversation is here for your listening pleasure. In today's episode, I will be sharing ten of the most important lessons I've learned from Joshua Sheats. These are lessons that apply to personal finance, investing, and beyond. The Top 10 Personal Finance Lessons I have learned from Joshua Sheats Conventional advice should not be accepted simply because it's conventional advice Conventional advice should also not be rejected simply because it's conventional advice. A strategy is more important than tactics. Tactics change over time, but a strategy is enduring. Action leads to life change. Ideas, learnings, and study are all meaningless if you don't take action to improve your life. There is more than one way to become financially successful. There is more than one definition of success. Don't simply accept the definition given to you by society. Don't compare yourself to others, only your past self. Personal finance is behavioral, not mathematical. The mathematics is simple and straightforward. Mastering your behavior takes a lot more effort. You are capable of controlling and curating your desires by what you expose yourself to. Don't be afraid of helping others. Sharing of ideas, knowledge, and skills do not less your own worth. It only improves yourself, others, and the world. (Could be a business idea, how to get ahead, etc. ties into action.) Kenya Sheat describes herself a natural born writer and her love of writing was the turning point and therapy she needed to recover her emotional strength when she suffered a breakdown following the death of her much loved Grandma and 2 close friends. It was at the 'rock bottom' moment that Kenya followed the advice of her therapist and turned to her journal. She began recording her thoughts and feelings and this kept her focused on the things she was grateful for and allowed her to express her emotions in a way that made sense to her. Kenya says "Writing is how I've been able to handle a lot of things and then reading it back to myself. It helps me to understand exactly what I'm going through. Its one thing to be going through something and people can see what your going through from the outside but by writing it down I'm taking my inside and turning it to the outside. I'm flipping the inside out so I can visually see and better understand." She learned the power of seeing her feelings on the page in front of her and the sense of peace and understanding that came from" When she finished her degree studies Kenya joined corporate America and prepared for the long hours and commitment needed to be successful. But she had a dream to start her own business and took a leap of faith, left her corporate job and started on her entrepreneurial journey. It was tough and for a while she was homeless and living in a shelter in New York City. But she know she wasn't meant to stay there and looks back on that time as a necessary part of her journey towards creating her own business but also to understanding herself.

Mike and Shyretha Sheats are the husband and wife team who run an evolving dinner series called The Plate Sale in Atlanta and Athens Georgia. They previously spent time in Charleston – Mike at McCrady’s and Shyretha at The Gin Joint, and they were both part of the opening team at Staplehouse, the Atlanta gem that was named best new restaurant in 2016 by Bon Appétit. Mike and Shyretha are helping put together an event called The People’s Supper: a community dinner and conversation on violence, environmental racism and radical imagination being held on the fiftieth anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination (Wednesday, April 4th, 2018). Mike will be preparing the final meal that Dr. King never had the opportunity to eat. They spoke to HRN's Kat Johnson about the dinner and the organization that is hosting, Lead to Life. Lead to Life is transforming weapons into shovels for ceremonial-tree plantings at sites that have been impacted by violence or carry spiritual significance across Atlanta and Oakland. I've started releasing guest appearances I've made on other podcasts. The first one is an interview with Joshua Sheats on Radical Personal Finance about hitchhiking and budget travel in general. I share my experiences and we both go in depth on tactics around hitchhiking, housing, transport and ultralight backpacking. Here are Joshua's show notes: Do you wish to set out and travel but feel like you lack the money? Well, what if you did it anyway and just adjusted your style of travel to fit a more modest budget? My guest today is long-time listener of the show, Philip Frey. A few years ago he did exactly that. He set out across Europe with a schoolmate and they managed to cobble together a very fun trip on a very modest budget! In today’s show we discuss Philip’s experiences and advice for how to replicate a trip like his. I also share some of my tips and ideas for how I would approach a trip like this for myself. Today I tell you why we don't have health insurance in my family and what we do instead! We continue our health insurance series today with a discussion of Christian Health Care Sharing Ministries. Perhaps the Health Care Sharing Ministries shouldn't be in this series because they are not actually health insurance. But, if you're a participant in an approved organization, you qualify for an exemption to the Obamacare tax penalty (for not having health insurance). Personally, I love the concept of these organizations and I have nothing but good things to say about my experience with Samaritan Ministries (which is the one that my family participates in). In today's show I give you a background of these companies and my own experience and opinion of them. There are 5 major options for you: 1. Samaritan Ministries http://samaritanministries.org/ 2. Christian Healthcare Ministries http://www.chministries.org/ 3. Medishare – Christian Care Ministry https://mychristiancare.org/medi-share/ 4. Liberty Health Share http://www.libertyhealthshare.org/ 5. Altrua Health Share http://altruahealthshare.org/ Enjoy the show! I received the note below from a listener of my show and today I answer it! Enjoy, Joshua ----- Hi Mr. Sheats! I'm a home educated 13-year-old fan of your podcast. I love how in-depth, interesting, and out-of-the-box it is. I used to listen to the Dave Ramsey Show a lot, but that got really bland, so my dad suggested your show. I love it! I've been listening pretty much daily since January of this year, and you've inspired me to become financially independent before age 30. Right now, I'm saving 70% of my income from working at my parents' dental office and trying to develop skills that will get me closer to that goal (such as math, coding, and finance, all things I love learning about and think have the best potential to help me become financially independent). Do you have any advice for a thirteen-year-old listener like me? As for a specific question, I was wondering whether you would recommend I continue doing high school at home or attending our local public school. I'm really interested in taking CLEP classes since those could help me finish college faster. As far as I can tell, the pros of public school are: I'm pretty extroverted, so being able to hang out with friends every day sounds fun (although I'm sure high school isn't just hanging out!). The high school in our district is ranked 10/10, so it's supposed to be a good school academically. It might be a good way to get a feel for going to a "normal" school and make getting used to staying at the teacher's pace, and other skills I might need for college easier. The transcript is automatic, but in home education, you have to detail everything yourself and make sure it fits with requirements. Cons: I love being home educated! I'm an independent learner, and I can learn faster just reading something and taking a test than sitting in class for an hour. I'd probably have less time in a public school as opposed to home education. Other than hanging out with friends, writing my fantasy novel, and playing music, I want to spend my free time as a homeschooler learning skills, experimenting with starting a business, and studying CLEP. I'd have to stick with the class, but with home education, everything's based on your pace, so you can go faster. I love how we can take vacations or days off sporadically, but in public school, with such long summer breaks, etc, you can't miss a day comfortably. I'd have to wake up early (; Thanks for all your time! Support RPF on Patreon: www.radicalpersonalfinance.com/patron Book a consulting phone call with me: www.radicalpersonalfinance.com/phonecall
