The Great American Eclipse

The LIUniverse with Dr. Charles Liu

The total solar eclipse is almost here! In this special episode of The LIUniverse, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu bring you both the basics and some more in-depth investigations of how eclipses work, how to see them, and what makes them so unique. This episode includes clips from Chuck's recent public talk at the College of Staten Island to a packed house. So, if you hear some background chatter, it's the audience getting as excited about the eclipse as we are.   Today's joyfully cool cosmic thing is, of course, the eclipse itself! Dr. Liu discusses why total solar eclipses are so rare at any given spot on the planet, and how illustrations of eclipses can miss the mark. While a total eclipse will happen somewhere on Earth every year or two, each is only visible in a narrow band, so to see one you need to get lucky – or travel.   With a path over land stretching from Mazatlán, Mexico (where Dr. Liu saw a previous eclipse in 1991) through Newfoundland, Canada, there are already tens of millions of people in place to see this astronomical wonder this time around. Millions more will travel to join them. Since the Moon's shadow races across the landscape at about 1,000 miles per hour, Chuck likens the visual effect to something out of Lord of the Rings.   Speaking of rings, the “diamond ring effect” and the “Baily's beads” will become visible right before totality as the sun peeks through the Moon's valleys. Chuck and Allen talk about how to protect your eyes so to enjoy these last rays of sun safely.   Dr. Liu shares how best to get yourself into the ~100 mile wide path of totality. One piece of advice: Don't try to battle the traffic driving up on the morning of the 8th!   What if you can't reach totality? Charles explains that 99% of the best parts of an eclipse happen in that last 1% of the eclipse where the Sun becomes completely covered. Don't worry if you can't make it to the path of totality – Charles and Allen share cool stuff you can watch for including a method for calculating the true size of the Moon (link below).   Dr. Liu also explains his idea about how to have the most fun with the eclipse, and why his favorite 2017 eclipse photo isn't a masterpiece.   If you're a fan of the LIUniverse, you know we love questions. At Dr. Liu's recent public talk at the College of Staten Island, he fielded live questions from the audience which we've included here. The first is about a comet called 12P Pons-Brooks that you can spot in the direction of the sun during the eclipse, perhaps just on the edge of visibility with your unaided eye.   The next question is about how we are able to predict eclipses so far in advance. Allen explains how the Babylonians used Lunar eclipses (or “Blood Moons”) as the key to predict Solar eclipses. Allen also adds his own calculations about where else in the solar system you can see a total eclipse – it's often said that the Earth is the only planet where total eclipses happen, but that might only be partially correct. Also, find out where you'd need to park a spaceship to create your own eclipse whenever you want!   Our last question ponders why the Sun throws out such large and bright flares and coronal streamers which become visible as fiery red and ghostly white spikes coming from the Sun during an eclipse. The answer explains how the Sun is like a pot of boiling water, with some fun science terms thrown in for flavor! Can you say “magnetohydrodynamics” three times fast? We conclude the discussion with a little more Solar physics: how we've recently sent a space probe into those very same coronal streamers, and how the Sun is nearing the peak of its 11 year cycle, offering some bonus chances to test out your eclipse glasses.   The LIUniverse wants to help you have the best, safest, and most informed experience for the celestial display of the decade. We hope you enjoy this episode. Today, smart devices are practically everywhere. In fact, there are now 15.14 billion internet-connected devices worldwide. That number is expected to double by 2030. In 2020, the number of Inernet-of-Things (IoT) devices surpassed the number of non-IoT devices. And there's no looking back. Worldwide, 127 devices are connected to the internet every second of the day. And by 2025, it is estimated that 152,200 devices will be connecting to the internet every minute. Smart devices bring lots of convenience to our hectic and complicated lives. But is that convenience worth the increased risk to your privacy? In this episode of Privacy Files, Rich and Sarah kick of the show by celebrating the podcast's 21st episode--placing it in the top 1% of all podcasts globally. According to Jack Butcher, Head of the creative agency Visualize Value, 99% of all podcasts never make it past the 20th episode. Definitely worth a little celebration. And thank you to our listeners for supporting the privacy mission. You are the reason we created this endeavor. Sarah and Rich start off the episode with a little history about smart devices. Spoiler Alert: The first IoT device was actually a vending machine! The conversation shifts to the pros and cons of wireless and hardwired smart devices as well as smart devices in general. Sarah then dives into some specific types of smart devices and the nuances of each. She also touches on a few strange smart devices that sound a bit too much even for the most modern of societies. Rich and Sarah then break down the data privacy picture for devices like thermostats, smart glasses, audio/visual equipment, wearable technologies and smartphones. Rich closes out the episode by highlighting some examples of smart device hacking, including a test conducted by YouTuber Dustin from the channel SmarterEveryDay. Dustin used a laser to hack into a variety of smart devices during the experiment. All in all, this is an episode that may very well leave you reconsidering the adoption of smart device technology inside your home. “As easy as riding a bike.” That's the saying. But what if the way you rode the bike changed? Would you be able to unlearn the thing you've known since you were a kid? In the Youtube video, The Backwards Brain Bicycle, Destin from the SmarterEveryDay channel changes the gears on his bicycle, so when he turns the handlebars one way, the bicycle goes the opposite way. It took him eight months to learn how to ride it. On this episode of Destined To Be, I talk about this video and how it changed the way I think about my subconscious habits.  I share my thoughts on why we feel unsafe when we start experimenting with new habits or ways of doing things, as our autonomic habits subconsciously dictate our lives. Listen in as I discuss the difference between knowledge and understanding, the importance of transitional periods in our lives, and how to shift your internal dialogue to focus on your unwanted feelings and behaviors in order to change them into the way you wish to show up in the world.  Key Takeaways My takeaways from the Backwards Brain Bicycle Youtube video How your autonomic habits subconsciously dictate your life Why knowledge is different than understanding Why people often feel unsafe when starting new habits or doing things differently The importance of pushing against the norm to do good things that are uncomfortable and unfamiliar How to change the way you show up in the world by bringing your awareness to your unwanted thoughts, feelings, and behaviors The importance of perseverance through transitional periods in your life to improve yourself and live the life you want Why human beings would not learn how to make massive shifts and changes without suffering Connect with Jeremiah & Mallory Destined to Be Podcast Destined to Be on Instagram Jeremiah on Instagram Mallory on Instagram Level Up Entourage Facebook Group Text VIP to 586-600-8492 Resources Get on the waitlist for Level Up VIP Elementum Coaching Institute on Instagram The Backwards Brain Bicycle - Smarter Every Day

Welcome to episode 243 (“Bad Idea Alexa”) of the EdTech Situation Room from December 29, 2021, where technology news meets educational analysis. This week Jason Neiffer (@techsavvyteach) and Wesley Fryer (@wfryer) discussed Alexa sharing a dangerous TikTok challenge, LastPass credential stuffing, and cybersecurity discoveries in 2021. Russia's Google fine, Texas' misguided social media law, and a New York Times editorial challenging us to figure out what to do with our amazingly powerful technology tools were also highlighted articles. Predictions for how Apple may transform the Macbook Air in 2022, a lawsuit from earlier in 2021 challenging Apple's use of the word "buy" instead of "rent" in the iTunes store, and ways our cloud-based infrastructure model is broken were also discussed. A shout out to the Smarter Every Day video, "Is Your Privacy An Illusion? (Taking on Big Tech)" and a brief mention of a complex San Francisco Chronicle article about a secret recording of a teacher presentation were topics rounding out the show. (We'll talk more about the last article next time.) Geeks of the Week included Coffitivity, Xway web design software, and Wes' latest blog post on social media stories, Instagram Reels and Mojo Videos. Our show was live streamed and archived simultaneously on YouTube Live as well as our Facebook Live page via StreamYard.com, and compressed to a smaller video version (about 100MB) on AmazonS3 using Handbrake software. Some people, after all, make being smart look effortless.Intelligence isn't a set trait, though. It's a changeable, flexible ability to learn and stimulate your brain that can improve over time. The key is to practice lifestyle habits that support and protect your brain.Practicing certain lifestyle habits may help improve your overall intelligence, which includes two types:Crystallized intelligence. This refers to your vocabulary, knowledge, and skills. Crystallized intelligence typically increases as you get older.Fluid intelligence. Also known as fluid reasoning, fluid intelligence is your ability to reason and think abstractly.Read on to learn what science has to say about the different ways you may be able to boost both your crystallized and fluid intelligence.1. Exercise regularlyStaying physically active is one of the best ways to improve brain functioning.According to a 2018 studyTrusted Source, light exercise promotes activity in the hippocampus, which is involved in memory. It also enhances the connection between the hippocampus and other brain regions that regulate memory.A 2014 studyTrusted Source also found that exercise increases the volume of the hippocampus. The authors of the study speculated that aerobic activity promotes the growth of neurons, which boosts brain structure and function. To enjoy the cognitive benefits of exercise, it's important to do it regularly. Good Morning! And if in case I don't see ya...good afternoon good evening and good night. Happy people just don't shoot their husbands, they just don't." Elle from Legally Blonde. With that...welcome back to Improve With Joe! Today we're going to start off with details from the start of "Spark" the book...we'll talk about the school system that made major changes, what exercise and activity do to the body, and how this initial information aids in the understanding of not only what exercise does physically but also how that affect applies to the brain. Next - we'll get into the topic of setting goals! Whether they're personal, professional, emotional, interpersonal, fitness related, relationship specific goals...or anything...the action of physically writing out the goal and communicating it to those who support you...is in invaluable tool! We'll go over the basics of goal setting and some methods you can use so you stick to your own goals and improve. Finally we'll get into a short message regarding a new term to me, found/heard from Destin Sandlin from Smarter Every Day...a term coined by Destin (I believe) - Proactive Intentional Unity - In that section we'll break it down and explain further what it means.

Building a business in today's world opens a lot of opportunities and brings just as many challenges. It is not enough to find the right tools and products, but it is essential to be equipped with the correct information.   In this episode, Chris Naugle of Flipout Academy shares his experiences in building his company and brand as a young entrepreneur. He also shares insights on building and creating a business culture that attracts customers, as well as the hows of investing in real estate. There's a lot you can learn, so make sure you don't miss this episode! About Our Guest: Chris Naugle has dedicated his life to become America's leading money mentor. He is the co-founder and CEO of Flipout Academy, founder of The Money School, and Money Mentor for The Money Multiplier. He is an innovator and visionary in building wealth and real estate and believes in empowering others by sharing the knowledge on how money works.   Building a Business, Its Culture, and Real Estate Investments Chris's Background: He came from a lower middle-class family. He did not come from a family of entrepreneurs. However, as a kid, he was ambitious and wanted to be a professional athlete. At age 14, he started working on a farm and enjoyed his work. At age 16, he started working on a restaurant, but going to work every day became more of a burden for him and his grades are getting lower.  Chris eventually stopped working and started a clothing line in their basement with the approval of his mom. He founded Phatman Clothing Company. Consignment He began to sell his clothes through consignment. He will leave the clothes with the store owners to sell in their store  Upon his return, he will collect their payment for the pieces sold. It is like an honour system wherein you do not get paid at first and entrust your product to the store. Building His Business as a Young Entrepreneur He started by making clothes and bringing them to school. He initially made a dozen t-shirts and increased production after selling them. At the same time, he's also an amateur snowboarder. While travelling and meeting up with his fellow snowboarders, he offers his products to sell in their stores. His mother helped showcase the samples to possible clients. Then, they started manufacturing. He needed a place and a store, so he wanted to open Phatman Boardshop. He needs to raise $70,000, and his mom offered their house as the collateral. At age 18, he opened the company. He was able to pay off the loan in five years. His business was greatly affected after the terrorist attack.  He applied in financial companies and landed a job selling life insurance. Chris didn't like it, but he used it as an opportunity to meet new people. He went to work earlier than others and eventually outperformed his colleagues, earning $74,000 to capitalize on his business. He became a financial advisor selling stocks, bonds, mutual funds and, at the same time, still pursuing snowboarding. Make Your Business Take Off He tapped on the strengths of his friends who are working for him. He empowered them and gave them incentives. In turn, they empowered his business. Chris was able to open test pilot stores, as well as two skateparks while being a financial advisor and having a different set of responsibilities. Keeping Up With the Challenges They built their personal brand for the target market. The customers also wanted the lifestyle their brand portrays. Keep doing the things you love to do. Developing a Culture With Rituals Their products were a part of the culture. The culture they started was spread out to all the skateparks and not just contained in their store. When you create a culture and portray and live the lifestyle others want, customers will be attracted and buy your product. Their culture built everything about their business. Running the Business He paid his employees and managers well. He had a good bonus program as an incentive. His goal was not just to accumulate money but to accumulate it to reach their goals as a company. He continually developed his skills as well as his employees. He is a visionary and a big dreamer. His Greatest Challenges and Overcoming Them The Great Recession in the US greatly affected his business. He had to sell his store, but he sold it to a family of snowboarders that he competed against so that the dream and the culture will be kept alive.  Venturing Into Real Estate He bought dilapidated buildings and rented them out. Chris started loaning from banks and paying for the downpayment. Then, he renovated the units one at a time. He had hit the debt and income ceiling, so he had to sell the 36 units that he renovated, including their dream house.  Upon an invitation, he attended a seminar on flipping houses. Chris then started going to seminars to gain financial knowledge. He started investing in himself, eventually learned the secrets of the wealthy.  There is nothing wrong with the system, but there has been misinformation on how money works.  Flipout TV Show and Flipout Academy He started a TV show called Flipout. However, the producer shut it off because it was too costly and “too outside the box.” He gave it to a different producer and supported their creative idea. Chris started an education company to coach people about flipping and building rentals. He realized that his calling was to go out and teach people how truly money works. The secret of the wealthy is not as complicated as how they make them seem. Chris is teaching simple principles. Welcome to episode 153 of the EdTech Situation Room from October 30, 2019, where technology news meets educational analysis. This week Jason Neiffer (@techsavvyteach) and Wesley Fryer (@wfryer) discussed Twitter's announcement to stop accepting paid political advertisements for candidates or issues, Facebook's employee complaints over its political ad policy, challenges to Mark Zuckerberg in testimony before the U.S. Congress, and a "deep fake" video targeting Senator Lindsey Graham over the "Green New Deal." @SmarterEveryDay's fantastic 3 part YouTube series on the weaponization of social media, The Mastodon Project, and the Factitious news game (great for media literacy discussions) were mentioned and recommended. The availability of Thunderbolt 3 on some Chromebooks, a new CTL Chromebox at reasonable prices, and Microsoft's political win over Amazon for a HUGE new U.S. military contract were also discussed. The launch of Facebook's new "News Tab" with payments to some mainstream media publishers, the new RCS standard for SMS / cell phone text messaging, Apple's newly announced "AirPod Pro" headphones, and a mind stretching Google AI Blog announcement about predicting the smell of different molecules rounded out the show. Geeks of the Week included New Home Internet service from T-Mobile, amazing "Shot with iPhone" experiment videos from Apple, and a highly manipulative web service available called "The Spinner" perfect for a student media literacy lesson. Our show was live streamed and archived simultaneously on YouTube Live as well as our Facebook Live page via StreamYard.com. Welcome to episode 129 of the EdTech Situation Room from April 3, 2019, where technology news meets educational analysis. This week Jason Neiffer (@techsavvyteach) and Wesley Fryer (@wfryer) discussed more technology links than should technically be "legal" for a free #edtech podcast. Topics included the NSO Group and Pegasus iPhone malware and the proliferation of Android-based pre-installed apps posing privacy and security issues. Dangers anticipated via the upcoming bi-annual Windows10 update from Microsoft, Chromium browser benefits on Windows, and another Facebook data breach affecting over 500 million users were also analyzed. Google news included the 15th birthday of Gmail, new features including canned responses and scheduled messages, the effect of Google's regular killing of its digital children (documented on killedbygoogle.com), and Google's 2019 April Fool's Day jokes. A shotgun wielding flying drone in Russia, prospects for a renewable hydrogen-based economy, and Mark Zuckerberg's latest attempt to apologize for his privacy transgressions rounded out the show. Geeks of the week included Outline VPN, Daily Digital Alchemy (the next iteration of "The Daily Create" by Alan Levine,) free security awareness posters from SANS, a "Smarter Every Day" video series on YouTube weaponization, and a poignant letter by an Apple employee about alleged illegal searches by US homeland security officials at the US border involving his iPhone and MacOS laptop. Have you ever read the Bible? For many men, reading the Bible is a challenge. With all of the pressures and outside commitments of being a dad, it's easy to feel like we don't have time to read, let alone read the Bible. And there's a lot of misconceptions about the Bible—what it is, what it isn't, its overarching structure and message, so a lot of guys are intimidated by the book. However, many men realize it's something they should do, so when they do try to make time to read the Bible, they attempt to read it cover-to-cover. That's just too big of a goal when you're just starting. As dads and spiritual leaders of the home, it's critical that we understand God's Word so we can apply it to our daily lives and effectively teach our kids about it. But we obviously can't do that if we're not reading and studying it regularly. My guest today is on a mission to help all of us bridge that gap. His name is Matt Whitman. Matt is a pastor at Free Church in Lander, WY as well as the creator of the YouTube channel The Ten Minute Bible Hour. Our conversation touched on a variety of topics including: You don't have to believe the words of the Bible to be a great dad, but the wisdom found in the Bible equip men to experience the full purpose of fatherhood. We need to understand the world we live in so we can equip our kids with the knowledge they'll need to thrive within it. Skeptics of Christianity should consider the undeniable practical wisdom found in the Bible that has stood the test of time. If there were no value there, it would have died out a long time ago. Good places to start reading the Bible as it pertains to the ideas and execution of fatherhood. Matt reminds us that practical takeaways from the Bible are great, but if we don't use them as tools and tactics to dive deeper into the broader message of the Gospel, then we're missing a larger opportunity to discover our true purpose. And you won't want to miss Matt's interpretation of what it means to leave an inspired legacy. He had a great response! You can find Matt at The Minute Bible Hour (http://thetmbh.com). Also, check out No Dumb Questions (nodumbquestions.fm), a podcast Matt co-hosts with his friend, Destin Sandlin of Smarter Every Day (http://www.smartereveryday.com/). And Matt's sermons from Free Church are available (for free) at https://www.landerefree.org/sermons/ Thanks for listening! The next episode will be released Monday, April 8.

On the outside, YouTube success looks great! Fame, fortune, and freedom. And, while it can include those things, there's actually an unspoken side of YouTube success that's difficult to talk about publicly because it can sound ungrateful or because there's a social stigma against such conversations. It's not uncommon for successful creators to feel burned out, stressed out, and on the brink of wanting to quit due to all the pressures they feel. SPONSORED BY: HELLO FRESH (hellofresh.com/ndq promo code "ndq" for $30 off your first order) THIS EPISODE ALSO BROUGHT TO YOU BY: The Fifty-Fifty! (horrifying details below) STUFF FROM THIS EPISODE: Moon dancing with buckets on their heads NASCAR Apple Samsung Note   THE FIFTY-FIFTY DETAILS: The Fifty-Fifty is literally the ninth worst thing you can do on the Internet. It's a terrible game that we regret inventing, and would encourage you to avoid. The Fifty-Fifty is nothing more than a deplorable, ill-conceived, manipulative gimmick designed to channel unwitting participants toward financially supporting this program. Great! Here's how to play! Simply go to the5050.com or thefiftyfifty.com, and click on one of the two boxes. If you choose the correct box, you'll get to watch a spectacular, uplifting video from the world wide web. If you choose the incorrect box, you'll have to watch a troubling video that's likely to have a negative impact on your view of yourself and others. Regrettably, at the end of either video, you'll be directed to the No Dumb Questions Patreon page where you'll be morally obligated to support the program. AGAIN, WE CANNOT STRESS STRONGLY ENOUGH HOW MUCH THE REWARD OF PLAYING THIS GAME IS GROSSLY OUTWEIGHED BY THE RISK! We both look forward to the day when everyone forgets that the Fifty-Fifty (available at the5050.com or thefiftyfifty.com) ever existed, and it passes into the abyss of the forgotten realm where it can never harm anyone again. But until that day please be advised of the following conditions. 1. The Fifty-Fifty is binding in every way. If you choose to play you have entered into a dark pact; that is to say a blood-oath covenant forged in an irrevocable partnership with the very notions of truth and integrity to support this podcast on Patreon (accessible at patreon.com/nodumbquestions). Once you've chosen, of your own free will, under no coercion, and with metaphorical eyes wide open, to go down this path there is no return. We hate that about this game and apologize. Whether you enjoy the winner's video or dab the blood from your eye balls while you suffer through the loser's video, the obligation you've saddled yourself with remains the same. If you play and violate this most sacred of vows, we will know. 2. The fifty-fifty cannot be manipulated. There's literally no way to cheat at this game. And if you try we will know. 3. All participants are required to watch whatever video they end up with IN ITS ENTIRETY with COMPLETE AND UNCOMPROMISED mental focus. If you try to allow your mind to wander so as to reduce scarring on your soul we will know. There's literally no advantage to anyone to play the Fifty-Fifty, and that's why we so highly discourage it. For those of you who were hoping for a good game we recommend Four Square. Unlike the Fifty-Fifty it's a game of cunning and athleticism with clear rules and objectives. We recommend playing with a regulation 8.5 inch ball outdoors on a windless day in accordance with the official rules available at squarefour.org. Thank you. And for parents, key tips to help your kids grow up smarter, and more engaged than ever! Dr. Michael Merzenich is the pioneer in brain plasticity, or the ability to change the brain. According to him, the brain is not fixed as we've been taught, but can work better if we work on it. And not just a little, but huge changes. This means you could change careers, become an entrepreneur, or a singer, or do something completely outside your comfort zone and brain-power if you want. You can change your mind to be able to do anything. Your IQ is not fixed. Your memory is not fixed. And you do not need to lose brain cells or get fuzzy-brained as you age. As he says “The brain is plastic till you die. You cannot kill it until you die. It is the greatest trick. We all have the capacity to be greater and get stronger.” In this interview he suggests ways to make your brain stronger. It's an especially important interview for seniors, for parents, kids, and for returning veterans. For parents he discusses ways to increase children's intelligence, and the dangers, and benefits of their technology. For seniors, he discusses ways to prevent trips, falls, hip fractures, and other potentially life-threatening injuries, through specific brain strategies.
