The Love Letter Project: Love Songs, Stories and Affirmations To the World from a Black Woman
Hi there Beautiful, Black woman, save the world by saving yourself. Many Black women are trying to save the world, but what if saving the world begins by saving yourself? Resistance doesn't just mean withstanding. Resistance is leaving too. I am so excited to share this conversation with Roshida Dowe and Stephanie Perry as we talk about getting free and staying free. We'll also be talking about their 5th annual Exodus Summit 2024, where the focus is getting out of the country quickly.
In this season of Democracy and Decision 2024, we take a close look at the state of U.S. democracy in the context of the 2024 election. The fourth episode, “The Gears of Democracy,” features Marc Meredith, Professor of Political Science, in conversation with podcast host Stephanie Perry, Executive Director of the Penn Program on Opinion Research and Election Studies (PORES) and the Fox Leadership Program. Both Meredith and Perry are members of the NBC News Decision Desk Team. The pair talked before Election Day, though the episode focuses on what will happen today at the polls. Plus they discuss why voting laws are so complicated, what has changed since the last election, voter turnout, mail-in ballots, poll workers, and why some races take longer to call than others. Check back after the election for our fifth episode, in which Perry speaks with John Lapinski, Robert A. Fox Leadership Professor of Political Science, PORES Director, and Director of the Elections Unit at NBC News.***Produced by Alex Schein and Michele Berger Hosted by Stephanie Perry Edited by Alex Schein Theme music by Nicholas Escobar, C'18Illustration and logo by Nick MatejDemocracy and Decision 2024 is a production of Penn Arts & Sciences in collaboration with the Penn Program on Opinion Research and Election Studies (PORES). In this season of Democracy and Decision 2024, we take a close look at the state of U.S. democracy in the context of the 2024 election. The third episode, “The Fight for Democracy,” features Matthew Levendusky, Professor of Political Science and Stephen and Mary Baran Chair in the Institutions of Democracy at the Annenberg Public Policy Center, in conversation with podcast host Stephanie Perry, Executive Director of the Penn Program on Opinion Research and Election Studies (PORES) and the Fox Leadership Program, who is also a member of the NBC News Decision Desk Team. The pair spoke about the myths and realities of political polarization, what got Levendusky interested in this field, what has changed over time with people who consider themselves “moderates” and “independents,” whether this election will end up being an “election of vibes,” and so much more.Next week—on Election Day—we'll release our fourth episode, “The Gears of Democracy,” featuring Professor of Political Science Marc Meredith. At Black Woman Leading® we are all about exposing Black women to new opportunities and empowering them to increase their options. So we were so excited to welcome our special guest, Stephanie Perry, Founder of vaycarious.com, to discuss the option of taking a career sabbatical, or an extended period of time away from work. In this insightful episode, Stephanie and Laura vision and explore the possibilities for using a career sabbatical for rest, self-discovery, adventure, and ease. Stephanie shares how her life changed after taking a one-year sabbatical to travel for a year (for just $1200 per month!). From that experience, she chronicles how that experience led her to the work she does today to help Black women embrace more ease by taking a career break or moving abroad. Laura also shares her insights from taking an annual one-month rest sabbatical in December, and the journey to creating that option for herself. And they discuss how even entertaining the idea of a sabbatical requires heart and mindset work for many Black women to disconnect our identities from work and labor. As Stephanie states, if you love your job, you still need a sabbatical! She champions making sabbaticals practical and accessible for more Black women, and the need for Black women to consider this expanded opportunity for ease and rest. Tune in with an open mind as Stephanie helps us explore our options with regard to the financial, practical, and emotional logistics of taking a sabbatical. Image by John Shedick (Creative Commons License) Experiences You Should Have Show Notes: Loi Krathong & Yi Peng Lantern Festival, Interview with Stephanie Perry At age 41, Stephanie Perry quit her job to travel the world. She spent 12 months bathing elephants in Thailand, volunteering on an organic cricket farm in Cambodia and (most uncharacteristically) working as an au pair for a family in Australia. Stephanie started Vaycarious to help other women take off the Superwoman cape and spread their wings on a grown-up gap year. I asked Stephanie Perry about a specific experience in the world that can be replicated that others should experience too, and she immediately responded with 'Loi Krathong and Yi Peng lantern festivals in Chiang Mai, Thailand. It's so easy to look at pretty photos on your computer screensaver or look at vacation photos on Instagram, Pinterest, etc, but it's 2019 now, and it's time to make those amazing photos you've seen across the web a reality. It's also time to start planning your trip to Thailand so you can experience the Loi Krathong and Yi Peng festival this fall. Press play on the player above to hear this podcast episode on the Loi Krathong and Yi Peng lantern festivals in Chiang Mai with Stephanie Perry (or listen where you listen to podcasts). Why did Stephanie Go to Thailand for these Lantern Festivals? Stephanie was tired of looking at the screensaver on her computer for years and years, she wanted to experience life. When she turned 40, her life wasn't where she wanted it to be at this point. She didn't have kids, and it was upsetting to her. One day she said, either I'm going to be miserable about this, or I'm going to turn this into an opportunity. She decided it was the time to pick up and go, and this was her chance. The first thing she decided that she was going to see the world. She decided she would take 12 months, empty her savings and see the world.
