The Inventive Journey

In this episode of The Inventive Journey, Devin Miller interviews Sergey Korolev about a founder path that refuses to stay in one lane. Sergey's story begins with robotics engineering at Bauman Technical University in Moscow, includes competitive water polo, moves into enterprise automation, and then grows into Just Food, a meal kit and delivery business that reached roughly $10 million in annual revenue over about six years.Just Food was not a cute side project with a logo and three inspirational quotes taped to a wall. It was a real operating business with logistics, customer expectations, influencer marketing, engineering demands, and the daily joy of discovering that food delivery is simple only when someone else is doing it. Sergey and his team grew the company in Russia's health and fitness market, learning how to build systems, manage pressure, and turn a real customer need into a scaling company. Then the environment changed. Sergey explains how geopolitical constraints made it difficult to build the kind of global company he wanted from Russia. He eventually moved to Portugal and stepped away from running the food tech company. That transition forced a bigger founder question: after building one successful company, what comes next?Sergey did not want to simply recreate the same model in a different wrapper. He wanted a company that could be global from the beginning, a category with meaningful technical depth, and an engineering partner who could bring serious domain expertise. That search led him into mobile application security and to the creation of Oversecured.Oversecured helps enterprises find vulnerabilities in mobile applications. The company focuses on a problem that is becoming harder for businesses to ignore. Mobile apps are not just tiny brand brochures anymore. They handle authentication, payments, private data, location, workflows, and connections to backend systems. When mobile security is treated as an afterthought, the risks can become very real, very fast, and very unpleasant for everyone except the attacker. In the conversation, Sergey also shares one of his toughest founder lessons: underestimating emotions in negotiations. Founders often want to believe that business conflict is rational because there are contracts, spreadsheets, and people using phrases like “alignment.” But negotiations are full of pride, fear, trust, control, timing, and incentives. Ignoring the emotional side can turn a business disagreement into an expensive lesson with legal paperwork attached.Sergey's advice to founders is memorable: act more and think less. The point is not to be careless. The point is to stop mistaking private overthinking for progress. Startups learn by testing, selling, shipping, listening, and adapting. A founder who takes action creates feedback. A founder who only plans creates prettier uncertainty. This episode is especially useful for startup founders and small business owners thinking about pivots, market constraints, cofounder selection, enterprise sales, or how to build after a previous chapter ends. Sergey's journey shows that a pivot is not automatically a failure. Sometimes it is the most honest response to what the market, the world, and your own ambition are telling you.Listen for a conversation about reinvention, global company-building, cybersecurity, zero-day vulnerabilities, negotiation mistakes, and why the founder path often looks obvious only after you have already survived it.You will also hear how Sergey approached the zero-to-one stage differently the second time around. His criteria were clearer: build with the right technical partner, avoid regional limitations, and choose a market where deep expertise could become a durable advantage. That is useful perspective for any founder who has outgrown one chapter but has not yet named the next one.To chat about this one-on-one, grab a free consult at strategymeeting.com

Chanya Punyakumpol, co-founder of Taan Thai, shares how a personal frustration when cooking Thai food at home sparked the creation of her brand. Instead of tracking down obscure Thai ingredients only to throw most of them away after one dish, she created perfectly portioned meal kits that contain exactly what you need, eliminating food waste without sacrificing authenticity. She talks about sourcing real Thai ingredients directly from Thailand and building close relationships with local farms and factories near her production facilities. Chanya also reflects on the growing wave of ethnic foods making their way into mainstream retail, and what it means for communities to see their cuisines represented on grocery store shelves. She wraps up by reflecting on how Naturally Network is a rare space where founders can be honest about their struggles, trade hard-won tips, and remind each other that they're doing better than they think.TakeawaysTaan Thai was born out of Chanya's frustration with the wasteful experience of cooking Thai food at home in the US.Each kit is precisely portioned for one cooking session with no leftovers ingredients or food waste.Thai holy basil — the essential ingredient in Pad Kra Pao — is seasonal and hard to find in the US, so Chanya sources it directly from Thailand and air dries it to preserve its authentic aroma. The brand sources ingredients from local farms in Thailand and works with certified production facilities, creating a trickle-down economic benefit for local farming communities.Chanya sees the rise of ethnic foods in mainstream retail as one of the most meaningful trends in the CPG industry, both for accessibility and cultural representation.Sound Bites"I don't want to throw the leftover coconut milk or leftover lemongrass that I didn't finish and create more food waste.""A lot of restaurants don't use Thai holy basil leaves. They use Italian basil or Thai basil, which is completely different.""We create a trickle-down economy that helps people locally actually get a part of the value we're creating.""I see a lot of different ethnic food coming out and becoming available more in this market. I like it because I get to try different cultures, get to try different kinds of food I've never tried before.""When you get to talk to people who are in the same space as you and being honest about it, we're like, oh, we also struggle on that."Links:Chanya LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/chanya-punyakumpol-110602347/Taan Thai - https://taanthaifood.com/Taan Thai on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/taanthaifoodTaan Thai on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/taanthaifood/Than Thai on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@taanthaifood…Naturally Network: www.naturallynetwork.org…Brands for a Better World Episode Archive - http://brandsforabetterworld.com/Brands for a Better World on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/brand-for-a-better-world/Modern Species - https://modernspecies.com/Modern Species on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/modern-species/Gage Mitchell on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/gagemitchell/…Print Magazine Design Podcasts - https://www.printmag.com/categories/printcast/…Heritage Radio Network - https://heritageradionetwork.org/Heritage Radio Network on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/heritage-radio-network/posts/Heritage Radio Network on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/HeritageRadioNetworkHeritage Radio Network on X - https://x.com/Heritage_RadioHeritage Radio Network on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/heritage_radio/Heritage Radio Network on Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@heritage_radio…The Food Institute - https://foodinstitute.com/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Learn how to prep upland game birds for taxidermy including pheasants. Plus tired of the question "What's for Dinner?" Meal kits: are they worth it? Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka ‘BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Season 5, Episode 259 Why Proper Prep Matters: Upland Game Bird Taxidermy Basics The Do, The Do Not & Did You Know About Pheasants Upland birds taken early in the season do not make great mounts due to the fragile pin feathers. Best to mount pheasants harvested in November and December. Do not ring the neck of a possible pheasant to mount as it will stretch the neck. Cool the pheasant immediately. Wrap the feet and beak in wet paper towels. Double bag the pheasant before placing it in the freezer. This will keep the bird from drying out until received by a taxidermist. Do NOT place birds in panty hose. A panty hose causes a bird to quickly dry out during freezing making it difficult, to almost impossible, to mount by a taxidermist at a later date. How Meal Kits Compare to DIY Cooking (Pros & Cons) Meal Kit Companies: Examples - Hello Fresh, Blue Apron, Home Chef too many to mention. I have personal experience with Hello Fresh, one of the oldest of the Meal Kit Companies out there. Are Meal Kit Companies actually “Good”, like taste good? YES - There are typically close to a 100 different recipes to choose from, and the meals typically take only 30 minutes. What's included? Your proteins of choice plus delicious sides. Never liked Sweet Potatoes… Follow their easy recipes, and you might change your mind. I did! Are the ingredients Fresh? YES! They are packed in a box with ice and in packaging that keeps everything fresh, if there was ever a leak - No questions, money was returned with the option to send another meal. Cost? Is it really affordable? Depends on your spending habits. If you are someone that is tempted by “Impulse Buys” like… Ohhhh I need that, even though it's not on “The Grocery List”... Then you are like me, and every trip that keeps me out of the store typically saves me money! Costs typically range from $3 to $12 per serving, based on the service, meal plan What is my favorite part about meal kits?  1st - Learning new culinary skills! We are currently not subscribed to a Meal Kit company, however I greatly improved my skills in the kitchen thanks to them! For example, I typically strongly dislike Meatloaf… Sorry, I know it's a comfort food for many. However - Thanks to here and there subscribing to a Meal Kit service… I now make an amazing Balsamic Rosemary Meatloaf… And if you've not had my Garlic Mashed potatoes.. You are missing out! YUM! 2nd - Taking a break from the nightly battle of “What's for Supper.” They service actually helped me plan better when not using it as I realized that if I just take out some meat from the freezer on Sunday nights, than I have set us up for a successful week of “getting it all cooked” throughout the week as no one wants to throw away the most expensive part of any meal… The meat! Meanwhile, Elon Musk finds a new way to perplex us all by admitting he pays people to play video games for him. They then unpack a whirlwind of news, including Trump's controversial pardon of Silk Road creator Ross Ulbricht and his ongoing crusade against perceived social media bias. Elon Musk's antics take center stage as he mocks America's tech elite, clashes with Trump over the flashy “Stargate” AI project, and battles AI cost concerns as hype begins to wane. On the corporate front, Amazon halts drone deliveries after crashes, Instagram blocks political hashtags, and Neko, a body-scanning startup co-founded by Daniel Ek, secures a whopping $260M at a $1.8B valuation.
