Bill Woods is joined by Thomas Bailey, founder of Veteran Benefits Australia, is working fill the gap left by the budget by helping Aussie veterans with exercise prescription to treat mental health Consensus is that the veteran community is among the ‘winners' of the latest Federal Budget. Yet the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) has instigated a change that has left a percentage of the veteran community feeling blindsided. Decades worth of research has proven there is a clear connection between movement and mental health, majority (89%) of all published peer-reviewed research between 1990 and 2022 found a positive, statistically significant relationship between exercise and mental health. Despite this, the DVA has decided to cease or limit funding for Non-Liability Healthcare for White Card Holders. This decision leaves thousands of veterans who were exercising regularly to treat their mental health, with no funding and no clear explanation to why this has happened. In response to this Veteran Benefits Australia (VBA), have pushed back with the rejected white card applications for exercise programs and are working with the DVA to ensure they recognise and cover exercise for the treatment of mental health.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Episode 156 - Liam Thomas Bailey. Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, Liam Thomas Bailey. Liam Thomas Bailey is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist based in Hickory, North Carolina. Liam recently relaunched his solo career after spending a decade as a sideman to notable Nashville country artists, including Rodney Atkins and Brett Eldridge. Over his diverse twenty-year career, Liam has earned a name on guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, piano, and harmony vocals. Now refocused on his original solo material, his music incorporates a fresh approach to the banjo and fiddle-playing frontman, while drawing from a deep understanding of the Americana, Celtic, and Bluegrass musical lexicon. With his newly-formed band Two Bird Stone, Liam will be releasing his first solo album in over a decade, Hands & Knees, in September 2020. For a long time, Liam avoided his calling, until the pattern of unchecked self-loathing and low-grade hopelessness became so ingrained and familiar to him that it felt like home. Years later, he would be shaken by a profound experience with psilocybin that catalyzed a necessary change in his perspective. With the help of this experience and the interest of his best friend, Chad Kelly (also of Two Bird Stone), Liam began to explore techniques of self-awareness and mindfulness that put him in much better emotional standing. And now, 15 years later, groundbreaking research at John Hopkins and UCLA has shed light on psilocybin's therapeutic capacity for treating psychiatric diseases like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Now, he's taking advantage of opportunities to responsibly promote psychedelic awareness and advocate for the necessary changes in legislation to permit the controlled use and study of this life-changing substance. His career has involved working in commercial post-production where he composed, performed, and produced media for nationally syndicated television commercials including Mattel, American Express, Washington Trust, and many others. His music has been featured on PBS, HBO, ESPN, and several A&E programs including Pawn Stars, Dog the Bounty Hunter, Say Yes To the Dress. In 2006, Liam left post-production to pursue his interests on the stage. He spent the next 11 years performing with internationally recognized country artists including Rodney Atkins, Brett Eldredge, and others. Eileen Appelbaum is Co-Director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, Washington, DC, Fellow at Rutgers University Center for Women and Work, and Visiting Professor at the University of Leicester, UK. Prior to joining CEPR, she held positions as Distinguished Professor and Director of the Center for Women and Work at Rutgers University and as Professor of Economics at Temple University. She holds a PhD in economics from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Appelbaum's research focuses on organizational restructuring and outcomes for firms and workers; private equity and financialization; and work-family policies. Private Equity at Work: When Wall Street Manages Main Street, coauthored with Rosemary Batt, was selected by the Academy of Management as one of the four best books of 2014 and 2015, and was a finalist for the 2016 George R. Terry award. Unfinished Business, Paid Family Leave in California and the Future of U.S. Work-Family Policy, coauthored with Ruth Milkman, examines the effects of paid family leave in California on employers and employees. It has been widely cited in discussions of national paid family and medical leave policy. Her current research examines the implications of consolidation of hospitals and decentralization of health services to outpatient care centers for the jobs of non-professional employees in these two segments of the healthcare industry. Several of Dr. Appelbaum's earlier books – The New American Workplace: Transforming Work Systems in the US with Rosemary Batt, Low Wage America: How Employers Are Reshaping Opportunity in the Workplace with Annette Bernhardt and Richard Murnane, and Manufacturing Advantage: Why Higher Performance Work Systems Pay Off with Peter Berg, Thomas Bailey and Arne Kalleberg – were selected by Princeton University for its distinguished list of Noteworthy Books in Industrial Relations and Labor Economics. She has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, including “Domestic Outsourcing, Rent Seeking, and Increasing Inequality,” RRPE, 2017: 1-16 and “Implications of Financial Capitalism for Employment Relations Research: Evidence from Breach of Trust and Implicit Contracts in Private Equity Buyouts,” British Journal of Industrial Relations 51(3): 498–518, 2013. He was a rancher, a soldier, a hunter, a statesman, and a practitioner of boxing and judo. But what many people don’t know about Roosevelt was that he was also an accomplished man of letters. He wrote over forty books himself and read thousands of others over the course of his lifetime. Yarnsy's Cafe in Tarrawanna opened its doors in January 2017. Since launch the cafe has seen considerable success in a booming Illawarra/Wollongong area. Jariss Shead and co-owner Thomas Bailey have gradually evolved the business into a multi-functional space to cater for not only the local coffee and cafe crowd but also local artists and musicians to celebrate and nurture local talent.The popularity of the cafe has helped compliment and arguably added value the area. With the recent opening of a local beer brewer next door, Yarnsy's is working collaboratively not only with them but the other businesses in the area to ensure that not only are they benefiting but the customers also get a value added experience.I sat down with Jariss in the spacious and chilled open court area at the cafe to talk about the concept, where the inspiration and idea came from, his personal inexperience in running a business and what he did to make it all happen.What did you get out of this episode? Here’s what I learnt;1. Find the right people – Jariss had no experience running a cafe let alone a business and he didn't pretend otherwise. Jariss sought out friends who had experience to not only get insight and advice but ultimately build a partnership with his friend Tom who had many years of working/managing in cafes. Together and with advice from other friends running successful businesses in the area, they were both able to follow through on an idea and make it a reality.2. Find confidence in what you are creating – At times Jariss certainly felt the heat of the constant challenges of creating/launching a business. What kept him going through those times was focusing on what he had control over rather than external factors. Jariss is a firm believer of enthusiasm combined with a great product or service can lead to success which helped motivate him through the tougher times.3. It's never personal –Jariss learnt a valuable lesson from a fellow friend and businesses owner that the external challenges are never personal. Bills, licenses, permits, fines, notices and the mountains of paperwork are merely coming from others who are just trying to do their job. Jariss made sure that he didn't get swept up in the emotional aspect of being challenged by various providers and local council and took the approach of just 'getting it done'.4. Excite your customers – In a world of Instagram and instantaneous social media updates, Jariss ensures that their food is served in a way that people will want to take a photo of it.
