We had the pleasure of interviewing William Elliott Whitmore over Zoom video!William Elliott Whitmore is taking things into his own hands with Silently, The Mind Breaks, his first album released through his newly formed Whitmore Records. He had the following to say of his new venture: "I'm proud to be sharing this with the world through our literal mom and pop shop. I'm excited for people to hear what I've been working on the last few years."When asked what to expect from Silently, The Mind Breaks, Whitmore said, "Imagine a large expansive landscape. In the distance, you see what looks like a house. You walk for a long time, and as you get closer, it seems more and more like the house is abandoned. The front door is locked, so you go around the back and enter. Sunlight pours into the otherwise dark space, illuminating a staircase. You walk up, taking notice of a stillness in the air. There are several rooms, you enter the last one in the hallway. In the room there is a closet. You open the closet and see an old chest of drawers. In the bottom drawer is an envelope. You open the envelope and inside there is a note. It says 'You are loved.' You are very tired, but you can't help but smile slightly. I hope this album is that for you."ABOUT WILLIAM ELLIOTT WHITMOREBorn and raised on a small farm in Lee County, Iowa, a love of the land has always been an important part of William Elliott Whitmore's life. An appreciation for nature and its cycles being taught from an early age. That awareness of birth and death is a constant theme in the songwriting, through a lens of hopefulness and acceptance. These things unify us as people, a theme that is often explored in the music. With a banjo, guitar and kick drum, Whitmore seeks to convey these ideas. For over 20 years, he has traveled the world, performing everywhere from Rome, Italy to Rome, Georgia. He's played basements, backyards, festival stages, and Carnegie Hall, and has no plans to stop anytime soon."Life is hard, nasty, and unforgiving at times," Whitmore says. "But it's beautiful, too, and music can be a reminder of what we all have in common, a desire to keep putting one foot in front of the other."We want to hear from you!  Adam and Caroline head back to the 3CR studio and discuss the emerging trend in animal documentaries - to focus on the real lives of animals, and without narration. It underscores the idea that nonhuman animals are unique individuals with feelings, relationships, goals, desires and personalities of their own.  The films we discuss are: COW by Andrea Arnold, Gunda by Viktor Kossakovky and My Octopus Teacher by Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed. Adam also mentioned some other films of interest: Nenette, the film about the orangutan and Stray, which depicts daily life in Istanbul through the eyes of three dogs that roam its streets, searching for food. The music we played on today's show: Doubt by The Teethers https://youtu.be/hz6JWCaJEqw MK Ultra Blues by William Elliott Whitmore https://youtu.be/NEyN1ofOEyE We also talked about the Australian Alliance for Animals which is a new national charity uniting six of Australia's leading animal protection organisations with a combined supporter base of over two million people. The Alliance are pushing for an overhaul of Australia's outdated and ineffective animal welfare policy and legislative system. Australian animals deserve action to end cruel practies, and a decision-making process that ensures their interests are heard and respected. The Alliance consists of the following animal protection organisations: Animals Australia, Compassion in World Farming, FOUR Paws, Human Society International Australia, Voiceless, the Animal Protection institute and World Animal Protection Australia. Follow them here: https://www.allianceforanimals.org.au/ Finally, Mount Gambier Wildlife Carer are hosting a FREE ONLINE Pouch Checking Workshop. They've had a lot of positive feedback on their previous workshops and are holding another one on March 25, 2022 between 6.00-7.30pm South Australian time. Today I'm joined by the journalist Jeff Kaye to talk about his work on the Korean War. He has illustrated how the US used biological warfare attacks against the North Korean and Chinese troops and civilian populations. We discuss the USAF and Marine Corps pilots who confessed to using biological weapons, and how the US government's story was that they were tortured and/or brainwashed into confessing. However, communications and signals intelligence document that there were biological attacks occurring, which is consistent with both the confessions, international commissions' findings, and other US documents that came out later. When the US POWs returned to the US, they were subject to interrogation under Project ARTICHOKE, a predecessor program to MKULTRA. It is not certain that this caused the flyers' recanted confessions, though it is fair to speculate that this could have been a factor. Mr. Kaye also documented how many of the same people who were involved with the biological warfare program were, in fact, the same people who were involved with the MKULTRA programs. Mr. Kaye's work directly addresses several key controversies of the Cold War and is crucial for understanding the Korean War, biological weapons programs in later years, international relations with the Koreas and China, and the MKULTRA programs. Now, as he embarks on fatherhood, he philosophizes about life in on a farm in Iowa, rap's influence on him, why he always toured with metal bands and how the writing for his new record I'm With You (BloodShot) was a bit of a different approach in intentionally exploring alien territory with lyrics and styles.

The Fightin' Side of Me". Raye Zaragoza is an award-winning singer-songwriter who Paste Magazine called “one of the most politically relevant artists in her genre.” First-generation Japanese-American on her mother's side, indigenous on her father's side, and raised in New York City, Raye shares her unique perspective and stories through songs that are both inspiring and thought-provoking. Her sophomore LP Woman In Color produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, First Aid Kit) is releasing today, October 23, 2020. The folk album is an intimate, empowering exploration of Raye's journey to feeling comfortable in her own skin and background. Writing about social issues comes naturally to Raye. "As a woman of color in America, social issues are things you deal with and see every day of your life," she says. "I write about my experience and oftentimes my existence has been laced with injustice." Raye's modern-day protest music been featured on Billboard, Democracy Now!, and PopMatters. She has toured in support of Dispatch, Rising Appalachia, William Elliott Whitmore, Dar Williams, Donovan Woods, and many more. It’s episode 141 and Rachel has the sensitivity of a Victorian lady. Also, great music from fabulous people. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK OUT COUNTRY SOUL SONGBOOK THIS WEEKEND!   Album of the Week: CF Watkins -- Babygirl     CF Watkins has found that sweet spot between pop and Americana -- a brass ring that many recent artists have shot at and missed the mark. It helps that Watkins’ lyrics are astute and journalistic in their approach to detail. If you put them down on paper, these would be intricate and observant character studies of women and girls on the precipice of society’s expectations.   Watkins brings a distinctly feminine perspective to her songs: these are stories of women -- specifically -- bound up in the expectations of others. Women who fearfully, casually, or confidently slash those bonds. Babygirl reminds me of Erin Rae’s stunning Putting on Airs: the observations of someone who takes pleasure seeing just how far outside the lines she can color while proudly resisting the instructions in the first place. Natalie Schlabs -- “Eye of the Storm” (Don’t Look Too Close) CF Watkins -- “Come Around” (Babygirl) WRENN -- “Maggie Gyllenhaal” (Single) Gim Kordon -- “Joskus mä pelkään” (Single) Jerry Castle -- “Worried Man” (Midnight Testaments) William Elliott Whitmore -- “Put it To Use” (I’m With You) Jonas Friddle -- “Under the Weather” (Single) Proud Country -- “Small Town U.S.A” (Single) Hayeden Leenhouts -- “The Band” (216 Miles) Mink’s Miracle Medicine -- “Beautiful Losers” (Thumbs Up Angel) Dead Nettles -- “If Drowning…” (Single) Will Hawkins -- “Punching Walls in Flats and Rentals” (Single) John K Samson -- “Fantasy Baseball at the End of the World” (Single) St. Ove -- “See You Later” (Single) The Belle Curves -- “Waltzing Will” (Single) Send me music via SubmitHub! What needs to be said about William Elliott Whitmore at this point? Over the course of an impressive career that's spanned more than two decades, the folk legend has performed all around the world, shared the stage with an abundance of renowned musicians and released seven outstanding albums. Before he was captivating crowds far and wide with his quality catalog and his incomparable voice, Whitmore was lugging gear for Ten Grand and he — and his trusty banjo — were winning over audiences at punk shows as the band's opening act. Recently, around the time his Dope Walker side project was preparing to release its debut album, My First Band host Tyler Maas was able to get Whitmore away from his family for long enough to run through his extensive and immensely interesting career. Over the course of the conversation, Whitmore discussed being a new dad, isolating on his Iowa farm and ways the pandemic has changed both his tour and album schedules. Along the way, the Midwestern music mainstay talked about inheriting his grandfather's banjo, finding success in a solo capacity, the creative itch projects like Dope Walker and Hallways of Always scratch, and some of the life-changing experiences he's had over the past 20-plus years. Before episode's end, the pair also relive memorable Wisconsin shows at places like Cactus Club and Cranky Pat's, mention mutual friends they have, and talk about Tyler's Green Bay Packers novelty band. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers"), Dope Walker ("These Freaks"), and William Elliott Whitmore ("Dry").

Aaron Mader has made quite a name for himself in the music industry. That name just happens to be "Lazerbeak." Using the moniker, the co-founder and CEO of Doomtree has released an abundance of his own music, produced songs with the likes of Lizzo, P.O.S, Mac Lethal and Dessa and delved into the world of artist management. Long before Mader was a Midwest music mainstay and one of the driving forces of an accomplished creative collective, he was an inexperienced teen in the Minneapolis suburbs who was struggling to get shows for his first band. That band — The Plastic Constellations — wound up lasting 13 years, being signed to French Kiss Records, touring and selling out spacious venues in Minneapolis before he could even legally drink. Along the way, Mader dabbled in beat-making and his Lazerbeak alias was born. The rest is history. Recently, Mader spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas and told him about his impressive indie rock past, the origin and unexpected explosion of Doomtree, and how he stays both active and creatively fulfilled making music in his solo project, Shredders and the brand new Night Stone, and as part of a forthcoming band with William Elliott Whitmore and members of Ten Grand. Over the course of the lengthy and open discussion, Mader also talked about ways the COVID-19 crisis is currently impacting Doomtree and the artists he manages, accidentally sharing a stage name with an obscure Transformers character, his inspiring "little money in lots of places" approach and how Lizzo gave him a six-pack of Mike's Hard Lemonade to make beats for what would eventually become her Lizzobangers album. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Indeed Brewing Company. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers"), The Plastic Constellations ("Let's War") and Night Stone ("Echo Love" featuring Lady Midnight).

Tawnya Musser, founder of Dear Departures, is a Home Funeral Guide, Life-Cycle Celebrant, and End-of-Life Doula offering services in the Denver Metro and surrounding areas. Tawnya shares how her journey through life informed her transition into the world of death and dying. Hear how she shifted from a headspace of ‘We’re all going to die, so what’s the point?’ to a place of ‘Yes, we’re going to die. So, what can we do to be prepared and empowered in our choices?’ We talk ‘go-to’ death practices, and their impact on the land, our environment, and our finances. We discuss and define terms including green burial, home funeral, water cremation, burial vaults, what it means to be ‘death positive,’ and what a funeral celebrant is.   We delve into engaging children in conversations about death, by introducing how cultures throughout the world have a variety of ways to care for the bodies of their dead. We explore how being in the presence of the deceased’s body has value as it relates to grief, and the ways in which we process death. We touch on how the shift into celebrations of life can strive to include space for tears and grief.
