"Oh my God! You're the absolute worst for that!"Yeah. Have you ever heard that before? Maybe a bit too much? Well, this film will test your moral compass (somewhat) into whether you think any of these people deserve that title. We don't believe so, by today's messy standards, when there is some true evil out there in the world presently but Joachim Trier's highly successful THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD that trail-blazed to the Oscars is upon us, and in your lug-holes.So, sit back, feel therapeutic, and accept the inevitable. We're going deep, man.
We're winding down our European Vacation and we make a stop in Norway but there's something that goes beyond the borders in Joachim Trier's 2021 romance/comedy/drama/coming-of-age film “THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD”. Renate Reinsve plays “Julie” whose fickle and drifting life might seem a little too familiar especially if you're in a certain age range. She meets Aksel, played by Anders Danielson Lie, a cartoonist about 10 years her senior and falls in love. The love and the eventual disconnect feel very real. She aslo meets and falls for Eivind, as played by Herbert Nordrum, a casual and sweet guy closer to her age. Relationships end and begin. Lives abruptly come to a close. Expectations fall through. It all seems so drifting and aimless so what can we possibly do about it? Force it? At best we can only hope for peace with however it goes. Trier's third in his “Oslo” trilogy sets an illuminating spotlight on the romance of a certain generation and it's as unsettling as it is sweet. It sure hit a little too close to home for our hosts. This feels like it could have taken place anywhere in the western world. Oh, look! We found a link but click it while it's there. "Costume design is the perfect mix between cultural studies, textiles, fashion and visuals" Ellen Ystehede is a Norwegian costume designer. She works for theater and for wonderful movies such as Joachim Trier's Oslo, August 31st, Thelma and The Worst Person in the World. In this episode, she reflects on how she became a costume designer (0:42) and then met director Joachim Trier (3:45). She explains how she built Julie's wardrobe in The Worst Person in the World (8:10) and how it was to design costumes for Anders Danielson Lie in Bergman's Island (19:29). She then compares designing costumes for theater and movies (22:37) before discussing her favourite costumes, the ones that inspire her (27:38) and the ones she designed herself (30:47). She concludes sharing what she likes most about her job as a costume designer (33:10) and her dream projects (35:46), which include Joachim Trier's new project, that will start soon. This week, we take a fantastic voyage inside Martin Short, as Dante's In Fer November continues with 1987's Innerspace, directed by Joe Dante and starring Dennis Quaid, Martin Short, Meg Ryan, Kevin McCarthy, Fiona Lewis, Robert Picardo, Wendy Schaal, Henry Gibson and Dick Miller. It's a delightfully silly adventure movie that neither host had seen, as J Mo nabbed it on Blu-ray earlier this year based largely on the novelty of Short having a leading role in a big, broad action movie. And to be clear, he is outrageously good in this -- an odd glimpse into the leading man career he could have had that never really materialized for him. Plus: Hayley's mom is hooked on Tubi, and Justin takes a field trip to The Marvels as we try to assess the MCU's future, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, and how Disney has flattened their own theatrical revenues across the board. Other works discussed on this episode include Loki, Avengers: Endgame, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain Marvel, Oppenheimer, Bottoms, The Worst Person In The World, Past Lives, After Sun, Meet Dave, Mission: Impossible, and Clifford among others. Joe Dante Month wraps up next week with the Christmas horror comedy classic Gremlins, with Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates. If you'd like to watch the movie before next week's show, Gremlins is currently streaming in Canada on Crave, Starz and Hollywood Suite. See you then!

What does a 1989 movie about people trying to find love in New York City have to do with a 2022 Norwegian film about a girl who can't make up her mind? Und dann auch vielleicht mit mehr oder weniger Hilfe von TOP GUN: MAVERCK oder AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER , von PREY, SCREAM, WAKANDA FOREVER, Michael Bay, THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER, BELFAST, 1000 ZEILEN, RHEINGOLD, EINFACH MAL WAS SCHÖNES, GLASS ONION, TNE INNOCENTS, IM WESTEN NICHTS NEUES, DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS, BLACK ADAM, THE ADAM PROJECT oder THE MENU. Bussi. Rocket Beans wird unterstützt von Chocomel.

Norwegian writer/director Eskil Vogt (on both solo projects and those co-written with frequent collaborator Joachim Trier) is intrigued by the idea of “coming of age”...regardless of what age that might be. So it makes sense that he “felt seen” at an early age by The Breakfast Club's Brian Johnon (Anthony Michael Hall). More recently, Eskil saw himself in Julie (Honor Swinton Byrne) from The Souvenir Parts I and II, which focuses on a more grown-up coming of age. He and Jordan unravel all that, and his chilling new movie The Innocents. Then, one quick thing about Men (...the Alex Garland movie).Find out how/where to see The Innocents.***With Jordan Crucchiola and Eskil VogtMaxFun members: order your patches ASAP! We're 300! Wow. Thanks so much for all your continued support. It means the world to us and we wouldn't be here without you. To celebrate, we're joined by a Norwegian writer/director whose wonderful film The Worst Person In The World was up for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Film category, missing out to the Japanese road movie, Drive My Car. Joachim Trier has received widespread acclaim for his black-comedy drama, which tells the story of Julie as she tries to navigate the troubled waters of her love life and career. It has an absolutely brilliant soundtrack, and you'll hear plenty of examples from it.

Finally, Beth Webb sits down with Norwegian actress, and star of the wonderful The Worst Person In The World, Renate Reinsve. Then, in the virtual podbooth this week, Chris is joined by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer for a discussion about which of the many facets of film journalism appeal to them most. They also tackle the week's movie news, including taking a stab at predicting the outcome of the Oscars, while they review The Worst Person In The World, Windfall, and have an argument about Ambulance. MAMBO! LISTO! GO! As Poe Dameron might say... *Somehow*, the Wages of Cinema ranking of the best of the year/Oscar nominations talk... has returned(!) Jack and Korey knew this would be one of the longer episodes, but certainly THIS long? Where's the eggplant emoji when you need it? But when you have such a wonderful crop of films, from all across the world and over so many genres, from Japanese contemplative Chekhov character drama to epic Spielberg-Kushner musical to Nicolas Cage making us (i.e. Korey) cry, to everything Bradley Cooper and Tom Waits did in Licorice Pizza, when looking at the best of the best of 2021 it was quite a year! So, strap in, make sure your speakers are loud (or if you're going to sleep, pretty soft cause sometimes we can get loud without any help from volume adjusting, woops), and settle in for a discussion of the rest (re: other 3) best picture nominees and Jack and Korey's top 10 films of the year ranking! here's timecodes if you want to skip: 1) DRIVE MY CAR (1:00) 2) PARALLEL MOTHERS (14:00) 3) THE SOUVENIR PART 2 (15:18) 4) SPENCER (19:54) 5) SHIVA BABY (31:21) 6) THE LAST DUEL (with a cameo from HOUSE OF GUCCI) (35:00) 7) RED ROCKET (44:40) 8) THE GREEN KNIGHT (53:13) 9) PIG (58:10) 10) THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD (1:12:05) 11) LICORICE PIZZA (1:25:01) 12) WEST SIDE STORY 2021 (1:42:50) wagesofcinema@gmail.com
