Sit down, grab your favourite mask, and enjoy Mike & Neil and friend of the show Kira (@toonietwirls) chat about The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. With only an 18 month turnaround for development time after Ocarina, MM, the first true Zelda sequel took things on a dark turn and added in a timed gameplay mechanic allowing the user to replay the same 72 hours over and over again to stop the moon from crashing into Termina. Divisive at first but now hailed as one of the best games ever made, the gang chats about their favourite moments, the sidequests that pull your heartstrings, and the amazing story behind all of it.

Happy Halloween! Bree is joined by her old friend Jason Edwards on this special occasion to discuss a spooky, scary… video game? In 2000, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask took players by surprise and alienated a generation of Zelda fans. Or did it? While Majora's Mask was certainly a departure from the familiar formula due to its altered structure, uncanny valley characters and, of course, its horror elements, the retroactive portrayal of Majora's Mask as a video game that was unappreciated in its time may be slight revisionist history. Nevertheless, Bree and Jason get to the bottom of what made Majora's Mask so special then and now, how it influenced adventure games, whether or not it is the true best Zelda game and how it fits into the franchise as a whole. For the third anniversary of the Asian Review of Books podcast, I wanted to do something a little different today—and talk about another one of my hobbies, video games. For video game players of—let's call them the elder millennial set and older—there's something special about the final dozen or so years of the 20th century. The Super Nintendo, the Sega Genesis, the Nintendo 64 and the Sony PlayStation: it was a period of technical advancement and creative experimentation that led to classics still beloved today. Exploring many of these classics—big and small, Japanese and Western, console and PC—are the entries of the Boss Fight Books series, compiled by writer Gabe Durham. Over the past several years, Gabe has invited his fellow writers to put together short works on the classic games that stand out in the medium's history. As of this interview, the 33 entries in the series span from 1976's Breakout to 2010's Red Dead Redemption. For today's anniversary panel, I invited Gabe along with three of his fellow writers—Alyse Knorr, Sebastien Deken, and Mike Sholars—to talk about their choice of games, what makes the 1989-2000 period so special, and why, perhaps, Japanese companies feature so prominently in the history of games. Gabe Durham is the founding editor & publisher of Boss Fight Books. He is the author of a previous Boss Fight entry, Bible Adventures, and a novel, Fun Camp. (Books mentioned in this interview: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask [2000, Nintendo 64]) Alyse Knorr is an associate professor of English at Regis University and the co-editor of Switchback Books. She is also the author of the poetry collections Mega-City Redux, Copper Mother, and Annotated Glass. (Books mentioned in this interview: Super Mario Bros. 3 [1989, Nintendo Entertainment System]; Goldeneye 007 [1997, Nintendo 64]) Sebastian Deken is a writer and musician born in St. Louis, Missouri. He studied music and French literature at Washington University in St. Louis, then went on to receive his MFA in nonfiction writing from Columbia University School of the Arts. (Books mentioned in this interview: Final Fantasy VI [1994, Super Nintendo Entertainment System]) Mike Sholars is a writer, editor, podcast host, Creative Director, and former full-time journalist. His work can be found in HuffPost, Kotaku, Polygon, and VICE. (Books mentioned in this interview: PaRappa the Rapper [1996, Sony PlayStation]) You can find more reviews, excerpts, interviews, and essays at The Asian Review of Books,. We're gathered here today to mourn & celebrate the life of a video game console, Nintendo's last handheld-only device, the small but mighty Nintendo 3DS.As of March 27th, 2023, the Nintendo eShop for the 3DS and Wii U will be officially shut down, meaning 866 Wii U games and 1547 3DS games will no longer be available to purchase. We've already dedicated an episode in the past to the Nintendo Wii U, so today we're taking a look back at our memories of the 3DS: our favorite games to grace the device, StreetPass & other quirky apps, its hit-&-miss use of its signature stereoscopic 3D gimmick, and some last-minute purchases we've recently downloaded & played in the eShop's twilight hours. Plus we wax poetic a bit about the death of digital media, the importance of video game preservation, and the ethics of p*racy & emulation (not that we know what tf we're talking about! we're just two gaymers with a podcast and opinions!) If you're listening to this before 3/27/23, we hope this episode provides a couple of last-minute game recommendations to download! Otherwise... we don't know what to tell ya, but thanks for listening anyways! Good luck finding a physical copy of some of these games on eBay I guess?  RIP to the 3DS. Get comfortable as we rewind 2002's unsettling but very vibe-y The Ring (2003), America's gateway to J-horror remakes and a film that made us all paranoid about blank tapes and TVs. From Gore Verbinski's masterful and immersive direction, Craig Wood's effective editing, Noah as a baby daddy and to what Jared and Melle personally found scary about the film, the conversation in this episode flows deep, like Samara's well. Hvem hadde trodd at Nintendo skulle lage "Don't Look Up" i 1999, over 20 år før filmen? It's been a wild few months but Podcasts have returned! Has it really been 3 whole months since our last podcast?? Woof... Anyway, the game in the hot seat this time is Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask, the time-loop N64 follow-up to Ocarina of Time. Majora's Mask is a game I've long appreciated but never actually finished. Now that I've not only beaten it but also spent ample time with the GameCube and 3DS ports, I'm ready to dish! That's right, we're talking both the original version and the controversial 3DS port! Which really shouldn't be as controversial but whatever... It is also with a heavy heart that I must announce that this will be the final SSFF GameClub. We all needed a little extra community time during the early throes of lockdown and it got me to knock a bunch of games off of my bucket list, but in the end it was too much of a commitment. Video production is the most important thing and if things start to interfere with that, we have to step back and reevaluate things. We haven't yet decided what, if anything, will take its place. But we've always been trying new things with this Patreon! We've had things come and go, we'll think of something fun. As always, thanks for the support! Stay powerful! Uncle Derek

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

The Sound Architect speaks to the fantasticly talented voice Elspeth Eastman. Elspeth has said a little message for you all! "Hey! I'm Elspeth. I'm a voice actor, composer, and all-around audio. You can hear me in Crypt of the NecroDancer, Killer Instinct, Guns of Icarus, and future indie games coming out this year! I'm also the host of Rated E With Elspeth on Youtube, where I record even more voice junk on camera. I absolutely love what I do, and the people I've met along the way are some of the most amazing souls to walk the planet. Game music/voice work is my passion – it's so rewarding to hear your recorded work within an interactive setting, and I believe firmly that headphones are a girl's best friend. Some of my favorite games are The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Flower, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Civilization II, Bioshock Infinite, Limbo, and Super Mario Galaxy. If you like any of those, we'll get along famously. Heck, if you like holding a controller, we'll be friends. I love meeting new people and undertaking new projects! Let's do lunch, because lunch is good." Enjoy! The Sound Architect
