Safety is essential to healing, but you may wonder… What does that even mean? (and what in the world does that have to do with effective coaching?…)After all, we are usually physically safe during coaching, right? However, cultivating emotional safety is a foundational piece of being a highly skilled and effective coach.Safety provides a container for emotional connection and creativity to happen. This includes problem-solving creativity. When we create this space as a coach, transformational work will happen. This is how we serve our clients to their full potential. The absence of safety in coaching means a client who is stuck, spinning, rigid, frustrated and ineffective. You may not have recognized this as the cause, but trust me - these are indications that your client is not feeling safe internally. The good news is - you can begin to cultivate safety and teach them how to do the same for themselves. My conversation with Leah Davidson in this episode will help you understand the importance of coaching through the lens of emotional needs and the nervous system. That approach is what will help you create the safety needed to make coaching more effective for your clients. We'll dive deep into understanding certain pieces of the nervous system and how it affects our and our client's ability to feel safe–so you can become a more effective coach in everything you do.The ripple effect of trust and safety in coachingAs any kind of practitioner, first and foremost you have to have a level of trust and safety within the relationship with your client for anything to work. That's why cultivating trust and safety is such an important starting point in the Master Coach Training program. We need environments where our nervous system senses safety in order to create better relationships, better connections, and better growth. At the core, it comes down to knowing ourselves better and understanding our nervous system. That's when we can truly create safety within. Building a deeper understanding of the nervous systemOur nervous system tells us whether we are safe or in danger. That distinction in our body is based on past experiences, life, personality, and other factors. This is why it is so crucial that not only do you understand your own nervous system, but you help your clients understand their nervous system. The lens through which we view the world affects everything. As a coach, you could have every safety cue out there and say all the right things. But if a client is bringing the lens of danger, they are going to be looking around for that danger. It's important to know that our nervous system is shaped by thousands and thousands of experiences–and it's not always accurate. But it is always a factor in our and our client's ability to feel safe.We want to create safety in our coaching sessions to the degree that we can so our clients have the opportunity to understand how to create safety for themselves. That will play out in the areas that they're trying to change in their lives and help create a transformation.Understanding the nervous system will help you do your best workThere are so many opportunities to dive deeper into this. Master Coach Training pre-enrollment is open, and Leah Davidson has a phenomenal journal that walks you through understanding and regulating your nervous system. The more you know about your nervous system, the healthier it is. “The nervous system is the behind-the-scenes to your mindset—the-behind-the scenes to everything—it fuels everything and is probably the most important investment you can make, ” says today's guest Leah Davidson. A registered speech language pathologist and certified life coach—among a plethora of other certifications—Leah saw early on the role brain neuroplasticity and positive mindset played in a patient's ability to heal and improve their conditions—even traumatic brain injuries. Today, she joins the Why Didn't They Tell Us podcast to explain how the nervous system affects every aspect of our lives— from our outlook, mood, energy and the way we interpret information—as well as how we can develop a new positive mindset and increase our resilience.    The process starts with developing an awareness of our own unique nervous systems and how they react to everything going on in our lives both internally and externally. Regulating our nervous systems is not only life-changing for us but for our teenage children who are watching our every move for cues as to how to react to their own worlds while their brains continue to mature. Leah explains how we can model positive nervous system regulation and emotional regulation for our kids.   Join today's discussion to learn how you can tune into this most powerful internal system, work with it to develop a more positive mindset, and ultimately, change your life.  Quotes “The nervous system is the behind-the-scenes to your mindset. It's the behind-the-scenes to everything that you do and it is probably the most valuable investment you can make—into your nervous system—because it fuels everything.” (6:13 | Leah Davidson) “I believe you can't really access your mindset without really understanding your nervous system. You can't take full advantage of the benefits of working on your mindset without looking deeper at what your nervous system is because it's sort of like the mindset…the tip of the iceberg that we work on but the nervous system is down below. So, we want to be accessing it all.” (13:08 | Leah Davidson) “Your worth is in being and not doing.” (22:56 | Leah Davidson) “Teens are also super unique because their brains are developing, their CEO is on its way to develop. Their CEO isn't fully developed until they're in their mid-twenties, so they are reading and relying a lot on the—hopefully—regulated adults around them, meaning they're relying on their parents, their coaches, their teachers to not just serve as a cognitive example but to serve as a nervous system. We call it co-regulation—when they are in your presence, are they feeding off of a frenetic, hyper energy, or are they feeding off of a confident, calm energy?” (22:58 | Leah Davidson) “We first learn about our nervous system through our caregivers and that is the importance of—when people say, ‘What can I do with my teen? What can I do with my children?' Nothing, per se, to your children, it is your work to do. And if you do your work, that will spill over into every single relationship you have, especially the relationship with your kids.” (24:28 | Leah Davidson)  Connect with Leah Davidson: Leah's Instagram Leah's Podcast: Building Resilience Leah's Coaching Community   Connect With Leslie: Help Your Teen Cultivate Confidence Website Instagram Facebook Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

It's both ironic and fascinating how we tend to avoid things we know we ought to do, and yet we don't. But we're complex beings. Just telling ourselves to move past the fear to move forward in our businesses often isn't the answer. Whether it's things you really need to do, or things you only think you need to do, the reluctance is real. But by broadening our perspectives on internal fear and seeking safety, we can help alleviate some of them. After all, it's not always as straightforward as knowing specific steps. If it were, you would have already done it. It's also about knowing ourselves. And knowing how to use safety to move you past fear and onto building your business. “The only way that we can truly grow into our full potential is by having that safety. **Trigger Warning: This episode contains discussions about suicide.**When someone loses someone they love to something as tragic as suicide, it can be hard to know what to say. We want to support them in any way we can, but sometimes, even though we mean the best….we just freeze up.In this very honest episode, I'm joined once again by my brave guest (and daughter-in-law), Rachael Clement Fiore—who lost her brother to suicide just a few short weeks ago). In last week's episode, we talked about some myths and misconceptions around suicide, but this week, Rachael graciously opens up about her own journey, sharing her experiences and insights to help others navigating similar waters of despair. We talk about our biggest do's and don'ts around supporting someone through a suicide. You'll learn why “let me know if you need anything” might not be as helpful as we think, some comforting things to say to people who are still processing their grief (and the opposite), and how grief truly does look different for everyone (and why Rachael says she's “making friends with” her grief).Of course there are “best practices” of things we should say to someone grieving, but don't worry too much about saying the perfect thing. I think Rachael's final thoughts in the episode are some of the most important to remember: if you aren't sure what to do, just do something—it's better than nothing. If you need help, please reach out—call the suicide hotline at 1-833-456-4566 (Canada) and 988 (US). Episode 79 – KNOW part 2, Expectations and Your Family, with Leah Davidson This is the 2nd episode in the Know, Love, Grow series.Have you ever taken a personality test to get to know yourself better? This week's episode is all about getting to know yourself better through different personality tests. I focus on one test in particular – The 4 Tendencies. I focused on this particular test because the #1 problem I coach people on is their unmet expectations. My clients are not meeting the expectations they have for themselves and their family members are not meeting the expectations my clients have for them. Lots of disappointment shows up in both circumstances. The 4 Tendencies test gives us information about ourselves that can be very useful in this area! Knowing our natural tendency in how we keep expectations and having this same information about our family members is powerful. Personality tests can be very powerful, but they can open our eyes to things we don't want to see about ourselves because they expose our weaknesses. Be open to all of it – including the parts you don't want to see. About Leah Davidson: Leah is a Certified Life Coach and founder of Leah Davidson Life Coaching. She is also the host of the Building Resilience Podcast. Leah has an MSc (A) in Speech Language Pathology from McGill University and has worked as an SLP Speech Language Pathologist for over two decades, helping people rehabilitate and rebuild their lives after a traumatic brain injury. She is deeply committed to helping people in living joyful lives through her coaching, which focuses on teaching them how to manage stress, deal with emotions, and build resilience. In this episode, Adam and Leah discuss:The inevitability of stressPracticing controlled breathingDealing with stress and anxiety through neuroplasticityLife is 50/50. Key Takeaways:Stress is inevitable, but remember that most of your stress comes from the way you respond, not the way life is. It's simply a matter of recognizing how stress manifests in your body and then dealing with that stress to help you achieve a much calmer state.Controlled breathing is the simplest way to deal with stress. Whatever you're going through, pausing for a moment to breathe and then exhaling will bring you peace of mind and focus. You can rewire your brain, and it is your repetition, patience, and consistency in doing the things that will change the direction that you send your brain that will bring positive results in your life.Teach your children that life is 50/50. Things don't always turn out the way we want them to, so it's okay to feel negative emotions about it; however, they must accept it as part of our human experience. "Whatever situation you were in in your life, if you stop and breathe, it will make it much better." —  Leah DavidsonConnect with Leah Davidson:Website: https://leahdavidsonlifecoaching.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/leahdavidsonlifecoachingInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/leahdavidsonlifecoaching/Email: leah@leahdavidsonlifecoaching.comPodcast: Building Resilience Podcast Connect With Adam Weber:Website: https://meditationnotmedicine.com/about/Email: adam@meditationnotmedicine.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/easytomeditate Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/meditationnotmedicine/  Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPnbji9rDrCfxhY0W8sHL9ABook: Meditation Not Medicine  Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. It's like your shadow. It might be big or small but it's always going to be there. How can we deal with it? Ultimately, you have to come up with a plan to face it. For Leah, resilience is the ability to tolerate challenges and to get through the challenges. It is the ability to bend and be flexible but to not break while you are bending and being flexible. It is the ability to bounce back and to weather the storm. It is making it through the storm and coming out the other side having learned something. Whatever your challenge is, don't compare it to something that somebody else is going through. What is happening to you is significant in your life. FEELING STUCK In her work, Leah helps people to build up their confidence and resilience and helps them when they are going through difficult times. These can be things that we classify as big things but it can also be those smaller, everyday things that can lead us to quickly reach our breaking point. We can feel stuck when we are focused on trying to change our circumstances. We can't change an injury, an illness, a divorce, a job loss or a mental health challenge. COPING WITH ADVERSITY Victor E Frankl is a survivor of the Holocaust, a psychiatrist, neurologist, and the author of the book “Man's Search for Meaning”. He looked at the situation in concentration camps and wondered what the difference was between people who were able to cope with this huge adversity and those who were struggling. He said: “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

There are most likely very few of us who welcome and enjoy painful emotions, thoughts, and experiences, and yet life seems to have a way of making sure no one escapes this mortal existence without feeling pain in one way or the other. But life also seems to have a way of making sure we also feel joy and happiness. The existence of seemingly polar opposites is how our Heavenly Father designed this life to be. When we embrace the “opposition in all things” is when we embrace the full human experience. Today, Heather along with coach Leah Davidson, are discussing this very tool on the podcast. When our expectations of life do not line up with the reality of the hand we have been dealt, we suffer. A way to work through the suffering is to build resilience. Resilience is our ability to bounce back, and grow, despite our challenges. Listen to my conversation with Coach Leah Davidson to find out how we can increase our resilience. Takeaways: *Resiliency is not bouncing back to who you used to be but bouncing to a new version of yourself.  *Post-traumatic Growth is a process where you take your experiences and learn from them to move forward and make something better for yourself and your life. This type of growth takes time and patience with ourselves.  *We need to be kind and compassionate with others and ourselves. We all have rough days and we need to not compare our rough days to others' rough days.  *The Adversary wants us to stay quiet about our pain and not get the help that we need when our pain seems small and not “big” enough.  *Three Pillars of Resilience: Body - Learn how to self-regulate and be with yourself in a stressful situation. Mind - Thinking skills and learning how to manage your mind.  Heart and Soul - connection to ourselves, others, a higher power. *The key to being more resilient is the tools in your toolbox. When you have the tools, you know you can figure things out. Featured Coach: Leah Davidson Niche: Helping people who are stressed and overwhelmed to help build confidence, resilience and more joy.
