On this week's episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Jeffery Glenn to the Friends in Beauty guest chair.  Jeffery Glenn is a renaissance man, a natural born creative and artist whose work expands across multiple facets of the entertainment and beauty industries. He is a man that is diligent, executes with passion, and performs with integrity at focus. Being from Miami, Fl., he also brings a unique flavor into the room.      In 2008, he was accepted into the Department of Theatre Arts with a concentration in musical theatre at the illustrious Howard University. While receiving his training, he met Reggie Ray who served as his professor and mentor. He'd trained in stage makeup with Reggie Ray. The training entailed that of character makeup, enhancement, and what defines beauty. It was then when he realized a love for creating and storytelling through the art of make-up.      Once he received a Bachelors of Fine Arts, he jumped into the field working on campaigns with model agencies in the D.C. area. Finding his power in editorial beauty, Jeffery began to leave his mark making an impact with photographers, stylists, models, etc. He soon after started landing spreads in magazines (Elléments, Elegant, PUMP, Selin, Solstice Magazine, Essence) both nationally and internationally. This led him to gain clientele from D.C., New York, and his hometown Miami, Fl.      After working on the east coast for 3 years, Jeffery relocated to the Los Angeles area venturing into tv and film. His credits include Rihanna's ANTI World Tour, Regina Hall (Scary Movie, Girls Trip), Rah Digga of Flipmode Squad, Tiffany Haddish, KJ Smith (Tyler Perry's “Sistas”), Charlemagne Tha God, Desus Nice, Kash Doll, Aisha Hinds (9-1-1, True Blood), Chris Spencer, Tammy Townsend (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation), Camille Winbush (The Bernie Mac Show), Elle Varner, Paloma Ford, Miss Nikki Baby (Love & HipHop Hollywood), Olympic gold medalist English Gardner, Wanda Durant, Birgundi Baker (The Chi), Lauren E.   Harriet Leader of the Underground Trail Mix So yeaaaaa, that Harriet Tubman film, a project that was originally in the hands of Viola Davis where it should have stayed, is finally due north to the big screen this weekend.  And while this may not be the fierce, shotgun toting, Union spying, underground railroading breaker of chains, it’s the only Harriet film we’ve got.  So you'll just have to deal with it --just like you'll have to deal with the fact that Cynthia Erivo's talented ass isn't going anywhere.  Surprisingly, a safe and basic telling of the revered historical figure leaves all the interesting details in the past sharing nothing new to anyone with a paragraph's worth of required Black History Month reading knowledge on the heroine.   You can practically see through the thinly layered script that Kasi Lemmons and Greg Allen Howard shopped around Hollywood for almost a decade exploiting the talents of Cynthia Erivo, Janelle Monae, and Leslie Odom Jr.   It’s an un-extraordinary softcore slave story that makes any strategy used to develop the Underground Railroad about as complex as a relay race.  Simultaneously, it turns Harriet "Minty" Tubman into a superhero who’s powers get yada-yada’d through montages, surface deep character development, and Negro Magic.  I pray we get a Harriet Demon Slayer film next. What it Got Right It would be irresponsible to ignore things the film showed up for, one of them being the cinematography.  Scenes where mysticism overtakes Harriet are pretty much gorgeous.  Who knew witnessing a slave running from a gang of crackers and hound dogs through unforgiving woods and rushing rivers under endless stars could be shot so beautifully.  Hollywood doesn’t have the best reputation for capturing darker skin tones, then Barry Jenkins showed them Moonlight.  Here, John Toll uses his Cloud Atlas experience to Jupiter Ascend the audience through slave escapes into the Philadelphia free lands.   The costume designers had a chance to flex big muscle too in scenes filled with black Abolitionists, some you may even recognize hiding in the foreground unacknowledged.  Janelle Monae floats throughout the film in scene snatching dresses, using a well crafted accent.  Leslie Odom Jr. is tailor made for a Black History biopic.  Cynthia captures the small part of Harriet she was provided through her mannerisms, emotionally dynamic range, and songbird of the south vocals.  There’s enough here to keep audiences distracted, that’s for sure. Without diving too deep into this for fear of never being able to think happy thoughts again, most of the actors you'll recognize on screen deserved a better film than this and they show you why.  Moving on... Final Verdict It’s a hard no for me dawg.   When people said they wanted a Harriet Tubman film after seeing Aisha Hinds in Underground, the sentiment was pretty clear.  Black people wanted to see a film that Nate Parker promised and failed to deliver in Birth of a Nation but about Harriet Tubman.  A Black woman on screen freeing her self in addition to dozens upon dozens of other slaves motivated by the fear of capture yet guided by the voice of God and a firm grip on her shotgun looking for a reason to use it, and that was only the start.  Sadly, that’s where this film peaks.  As Kriss says in our review, the most interesting parts of a film should not be in the captions right before the end credits.  That was the movie you were supposed to make, the one about the one they called Moses, and Harriet the Spy and Harriet the Humanitarian. ***UPDATE*** The Spoiler Review for Harriet is now up for Premium members.  This is MTR Premium Network content. Today’s guest is Rebekah Aladdin, celebrity makeup artist. Rebekah overcame generation poverty, attended college, and saved her way to being able to go after her dream. Her work as a makeup artist has been featured in 11 magazines this year. Her celebrity clientele includes Lena Waithe, Aisha Hinds, Justine Skye, Winnie Harlow, Cassie, Mary Mary, and Normani Kordei to name a few. Today Rebekah will share with us more about her upbringing and how it impacted her ability to attend college. She’ll share about the things she did to make ends meet and help her family at the same time and the smart decisions that she made that allowed her to take a risk on herself. In This Episode We Discuss: Generational poverty and how intelligence is a resource. The difference between a necessity and a treat. The mindset change that helped Rebekah embrace life as a freelancer and overcome her money hangups. How to know when it’s time to hire a team. Rebekah on Instagram: @rebekahaladdin Rebekah's website: www.rebekahaladdin.com The Word of the Day: Insurance I thought about describing IUL’s but what I really want to discuss is how to avoid being taken advantage of. The reason I got so upset when I heard Rebakah say that an insurance purchase went poorly for her is because it happens far too frequently. An insurance agent decides to refer to him or herself as a financial advisor but the only advice they provide is "buy this insurance." They do not help you understand your budget. They do not consider whether you have an emergency fund in place. Are you contributing to retirement? Do you have a good strategy for your student loan debt? Insurance is a product, not a service. It is unfortunate that we must be wary of people who refer to themselves as advisors and that you expect to provide a service but really are just peddling a crappy product that does not consider your complete financial picture and disappear once the sale has been made. This damages the image of the financial industry and in particular makes it hard for those of us who aren’t selling a product but providing a service. Insurance is not bad. Its job is to protect you from a risk. There is a type that is appropriate for you but a person first needs to know your full story before prescribing a cure. Some questions to ask when someone is encouraging you to purchase a product: How they get paid for your purchase. What happens when you want to get rid of the policy? What happens if you need to stop paying that premium for awhile? Do you provide support outside of this insurance purchase? One of the producers and showrunner of this series is Neal Baer. Neal has helped to produce hit TV series such as “ER” and “Law and Order: SVU.” Not only did he make a name for himself in Hollywood, but he also received graduated from Harvard Medical School. I sat down to chat with Neal to talk about “Under the Dome” and how it was to work with Stephen King. Plus we talked a bit about his time on “ER.”
