Episode 840 - Jason Interviews Alex Segura - Project: Cryptid - Ahoy ComicsFor the last five years, AHOY Comics has asked its readers to believe in the weird and sublime — whether it's a friendship between Jesus and a superhero, a grandmother who fights eldritch horrors, or a space squadron run entirely by cats. This fall, AHOY Comics' latest jam-packed anthology, PROJECT: CRYPTID, will feature unbelievably hilarious and hilariously unbelievable tales about cryptids from around the world. Featuring comics and short stories from well-established creators as well as new voices, PROJECT: CRYPTID will transport readers from the depths of Loch Ness to the wilds of the Yeti's Himalayan Mountains to the Ohio backroads where the Loveland Frogman lurks, asking the important questions like are any of these mysterious, unthinkable creatures actually real? And more importantly, are they funny? The anthology will feature comics and stories from writers Mark Russell, Paul Cornell, Alisa Kwitney, Alex Segura, Bryce Ingman, Paul Constant, Liana Kangas, Henry Barajas, AA Rubin, Joe Illidge, Melissa F. Olson, Zander Cannon, Gene Ha, Hanna Bahedry, Matt Ligeti, Stuart Moore and more, as well as art by Jordi Perez, Madeline Seely, PJ Holden, Mike Spicer, Mauricet, Steven Bryant, Peter Krause, Richard Pace, Jamal Igle, Ted and Ro, Lew Stringer, Lane Lloyd, and more.Buy it: https://comicsahoy.com/news/ahoys-newest-anthology%E2%80%94project-cryptid CFP Patreon https://www.patreon.com/comicsfunprofitCFP Merch https://comicsfunprofit.threadless.comDonations Keep Our Show Going, Please Give https://bit.ly/36s7YeLThank you so much for listening and spreading the word about our little comic book podcast. This episode is inspired by a member of my group program, Fierce Fatty Academy, who shared that her doctor shamed her son's weight. Children are going to be exposed to weight bias, so what can we do when that happens? And what can we do to make sure that we don't unintentionally cause them to stress about their weight and food? Isn't childhood “ob*sity” causing massive issues in society meaning we need to control children's weights? BONUS: List of 39 books for kids to adolescents that spread the body diversity message. Amy Spalding (We Used to Be Friends, The Summer of Jordi Perez) secured a literary agent, but it took another three years to get her first book published. We talk about the benefits of having a day job she excels at, burning her childhood novels in a family bonfire, the dangers of only participating in things you are good at, and why boredom is important for creativity and how the modern world is robbing us of it. In this episode we discuss the Adam Silvera/Becky Albertali collaboration, What If It's Us. We discuss whether we're team Arthur or Ben, and have a long discussion about punctuality. I'm super embarrassed to have realized that our discussion of punctuality does not include a discussion of class. Arthur comes from money; Ben does not, and I somehow managed to miss that when talking about the fact that Ben has to rely on modes of more affordable transportation. I wish we'd had this conversation, and I may ask us to get back together to record an amendment to this episode in the future. But feel free to take us to task for missing it here. We'd love to hear your take. Additionally, Lindsey suggests More Nate Than Ever by Tim Federle. Molly suggests The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon. Amy suggests The Art of Being Normal by Lisa Williamson, every book by David Levithan, and Becky Albertali's books. Cash Money suggests The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the Best Burger in Los Angeles) by Amy Spalding and From Twinkle With Love by Sandhya Menon.
We each give a rundown of the things we enjoyed most in 2018 and it's a ridiculously long list. Lindsey: The 57 Bus by Dashka Slater, I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak, Cardboard Kingdom (various authors), Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, Runaways by Brian K. Vaughn and Adrian Alphana, Saga vol. 8 by Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples, As the Crow Flies (by Melanie Gillman?), The First Rule of Punk by Celia C. Pérez, The Hazelwood by Melissa Albert, Saints and Misfits by S.K. Ali, Ladycastle by Delilah S. Dawson, The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the best burger in Los Angeles) by Amy Spalding, Leah on the Offbeat AND Simon vs. the Homosapiens Agenda by Becky Albertali, The Lady's Guide to Piracy and Petticoats by Mackenzi Lee, Everything Leads to You by Nina LaCour, Drum Roll, Please by Lisa Jenn Bigelow, Her Name in the Sky by Kelly Quindlen, Blanca and Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore, and Archenemies by Marissa Meyer. In what turned out to be a surprisingly contentious discussion (our panel is passionately divided), we discuss Amy Spalding's The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the Best Burger in Los Angeles). Molly suggests Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan. Kim suggests To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han and The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner. Amy mentions When Dimple Met Rishi as a potential readalike (before we talk readalikes). Lindsey suggests Strangers in Paradise by Terry Moore. Cash Money suggests the movie Sarah Burgess is a Big Loser. Nathan mentions Pink by Lili Wikerson but vacillates on whether it is a good readalike or not.
This one is pretty loose, gang(complete with a spaced out Nathan and some cool interruptions from children—mostly relegated to easter egg status). We do manage something resembling a discussion Becky Albertali's Leah on the Offbeat. Nate suggests To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han and Noggin by John Corey Whaley. Lindsey suggests The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the Best Burger in Los Angeles) by Amy Spalding. Cash Money and Amy suggest The Apocalypse of Elena Mendoza by Shaun David Hutchinson.

A hilarious, nuanced LGBTQ+ young adult novel about a teen trying to make waves in the fashion industry by running a plus-size fashion blog and rocking her dream internship—until she falls for her competition, Jordi. Seventeen, fashion-obsessed, and gay, Abby Ives has always been content playing the sidekick in other people’s lives. While her friends and sister have plunged headfirst into the world of dating and romances, Abby’s been happy to focus on her plus-size style blog and her dreams of taking the fashion industry by storm. When she lands a great internship at her favorite boutique, she’s thrilled to take the first step toward her dream career. Then she falls for her fellow intern, Jordi Perez. Hard. And now she’s competing against the girl she’s kissing to win the coveted paid job at the end of the internship.
Episode 12 opens with a lot of joy and happiness because The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the best burger in LA) by Amy Spalding is a joy from beginning to end. My YA reading group read it for May, and I loved being able to spend some quiet time with it before I spent chatting time with my friends. This is a lovely book about a girl who is a plus size fashion blogger and apt to crushes on inaccessible girls, until she starts her summer internship and meets the girl of her dreams, who is also her competition. Oops! And then the next book just flummoxed me. Just flummoxed. It's brilliant. Check out www. twitter.com/potentcastpod for more information and links to the books!

In today’s episode… In The Summer of Jordi Perez, Abby scores the internship of her dreams: working at a vintage clothing shop in LA. She hopes to turn this internship at Lemonberry into a paid part-time job (because how else will she be able to afford their awesome dresses otherwise?) and maybe gain a little inspiration for her fashion blog, +style. But when she discovers that she has to share this internship with Jordi Perez, Abby realizes that means some competition for the job. YA authors Kayla Cagan & Amy Spalding (& Banjo L. Cagan, silently) join us for a spirited roundtable about 1973's There's No Time For Love, Charlie Brown — a salty indictment of pop art, in which we learn about the disappointments of the public school system, as well as the theory of transitive kissing. Topics of discussion include: getting Charlie Brown title cards tattooed on your butt; Peanut People™; the phrase "when they stopped aging"; jokes about New Math (do they hold up?) ; a long line of toilet cloggers; The Most Depressing Speech We've Heard In A Charlie Brown Special; Kayla offers a Magoo-ish theory; the Great Meatlump Situation (playing tonight at 8pm, $5 at the door); Jazz: Musical Improv?; Joseph Cool, of the Carolina Cools; being mistaken for a basketball with glasses; We're Up All Night To Get Marcy; The Manic Pixie Little-Red-Haired-Girl; the theory of transitive kissing; sliders. Kayla Cagan is a writer. Piper Perish is her debut YA novel, with a 2nd novel on the way from Chronicle Books in 2018. She has contributed comics, plays and essays to assorted collections, including Girl Crush Zine, Womanthology, and Unite and Take Over: Stories Inspired by the Smiths. Cagan lives with her husband Josh and their chihuahua Banjo near that Starbucks. No, the other one. http://kaylacagan.com Amy Spalding is the author of several young adult novels including Kissing Ted Callahan (& Other Guys), The Reece Malcolm List, and the forthcoming Summer of Jordi Perez. She grew up in St. Louis, but now lives in the better weather of Los Angeles. By day, she manages the digital media team for an indie film advertising agency. By later day and night, Amy writes, performs, and pets as many cats as she can. https://www.theamyspalding.com https://tinyletter.com/thecheckin Banjo L. Cagan is six feet, four inches tall, and looks as if he was chiseled from solid marble by the hand of a god. A single look from him has been known to make grown men weep, as if they were staring into the center of infinity itself. Time and light bend around him, and as previously stated, he is tall and handsome.
