It's always great to find an artist who you know will be perfect for this show and our guest this week, Ben Wells of Black Stone Cherry, is just that. Not only is Ben a dog dad to three wonderful beagles - Henry (13), Hank (8) and Sunny Pearl (2) - but he also just released a children's book titled Good Girl Sunny Pearl which he wrote, illustrated and published. To top it all off Ben and his wife Jessica created the Henry & Clark Foundation that supports children and animals in need. Black Stone Cherry will be on a 11 date US tour that starts on March 13 in Bloomington, IL. For more info and tickets visit blackstonecherry.com. Ben's book Good Girl Sunny Pearl is available on Amazon and Barnes & Nobel. Ben gave a shout out to three great organizations. The first is The Barren River Animal Welfare Association who provide a safe haven for homeless companion animals and provide animals in need with humane treatment and good homes while working to reduce the population of unwanted pets through spay/neuter programs, education, and outreach. To adopt, foster, volunteer or donate visit brawashelter.org His second shout out goes to the Miranda Lambert led Mutt Nation whose mission is to promote the adoption of shelter pets, advance spay & neuter; and educate the public about the benefits of these actions. To see the wide range of efforts they spearhead visit muttnation.com Lastly, Ben gave some well-earned praise to the Beagle Freedom Project who are the world's leading organization for rescuing and rehoming animals used in experimental research. Since 2010, BFP have liberated thousands of animals while working to end their abuse through education, advocacy, and legislation. To contribute to their goal of a world without animal testing visit bfp.org And we at Rocker Dog would like to shout out Ben's Henry and Clark Foundation whose mission is to raise awareness and support for children and animals in need. Join us in a series of Question and Response Forums, where we give space for believers and nonbelievers to wrestle with skepticism, doubt, and questions about faith and belief. In this episode, Jace Williamson, Chris Burge, Jenna Leinart, and Ben Wells answer these questions: What book of the Bible should I start with? What is the role of the Holy Spirit in prayer? How does He help in situations that aren't explicitly said in Scripture? Is there communication both ways? What is the Biblical response to the transgender movement? How do we respond to loved ones who are either struggling or embracing this lifestyle? The end times are written and will be so. Many different times throughout history people have thought the end times are coming. How do we/should we approach the end times and can we as believers affect them?
This is part of our Squeezed Middle series on the strategic options available to the people running professional sport. The focus in this episode is the impact of those choices on the commercial income and capital value of sports teams, leagues and federations. Our guests are Ben Wells and Andrew Umbers.Ben is CEO of PTI Digital, the strategy and technology consultancy. Andrew is co-founder and partner of Oakwell Sports Advisory, the leading strategic and financial advisor in sports and sports technology. Andrew was formerly MD at Credit Suisse and more recently, he served as Chairman at Leeds United. You can hear the previous episodes in the Squeezed Middle series by searching Unofficial Partner in Apple, Spotify or your favourite podcast app. What is the Squeezed Middle? There is a small global elite of sports rights holders which are doing just fine. Billions of dollars in media revenue chases must-see content, from the NFL in the US, Premier League in England, the IPL in India through to the major quadrennial extravaganzas such as Olympics and World Cups. Likewise, there are clubs and institutions in the lower reaches of the sporting pyramid for whom not much has changed and who cut their cloth according to the local demand for traditional revenue generators such as sponsorship, match day tickets and merchandise. It's the middle of the market where much of the pain is being felt. The situation was described in a recent essay by our guest Ben Wells:'Economic crises tend to cause money to move in one of two ways: to quality or to price. Those in the middle, who are not able to compete on either front, are squeezed. In the last 12 months, not one major Olympic NGB was able to sign a primary sponsor, with the biggest deal of the year – British Cycling's tier-two sponsorship with Shell – bringing significant amounts of criticism. In parallel Müller ended its long-running main sponsorship of UK Athletics after seven years. UK Athletics is currently teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. This isn't a situation unique to athletics. Headlines in rugby, cricket and the second and third tiers of football report of similar tales of woe – the result of unsustainable commercial models – trying to grow revenues in a business built around live events, which are limited by number and venue capacity and whose cost-bases are rising with rampant inflation – are the norm."Unofficial Partner is the leading podcast for the business of sport. Every market has a top, middle and bottom. The Premier League is among a small global elite of sports rights holders which is doing just fine, thank you. Billions of dollars in media revenue chases must-see content. But even within the league, different business models apply. The elite 'top four, or six' are chasing European football, and with it an additional pot of TV money flowing from UEFA competitions. Then there's the rest. The clubs that exist outside that bubble, for whom life is harder, struggling to perform on the pitch on reduced budgets, while fighting off the cataclysmic economic shock that is relegation to the Championship. This is the Premier League's version of the squeezed middle, between the top six and the EFL.This podcast looks at the commercial options open to those clubs, with our guest Charlie Boss, Chief Commercial Officer of Southampton Football Club, which was relegated from the Premier League last season.Charlie joins Squeezed Middle regular Ben Wells, CEO of PTI Digital, the strategy and technology consultancy, who previously held senior commercial roles at Chelsea FC, Reading FC and Bath Rugby.See here for previous episodes of The Squeezed Middle. This podcast is sponsored by Leaders Week London.Who could you be joining at Twickenham Stadium on October 18th and 19th?Across the Summit, over 1,800 of the most senior figures in the sport business will be there, from Amazon to the Premier League, adidas to Spotify. This is your opportunity to meet and rub-shoulders with executives from across the sport business ecosystem, to reconnect with old friends and reminisce about your past experiences from Leaders Weeks gone by. With a week to go before the Sept. 1 season opener at Rock Ridge, Virginia, Brunswick High football coach Jerry Smith is this week's guest on The Final Score podcast. Smith tells host Greg Swatek why he feels this could be his best team at Brunswick as he heads into his seventh season at the helm at his alma mater. The Railroaders bring back most of a team that reached the Class 1A state semifinals last fall. He talks about the development of junior quarterback Ethan Houck, now a three-year starter at the position, and how senior running back Ben Wells has gotten bigger and improved over the course of the offseason. Smith also addresses what could be one of the most underrated parts of the team, which is their offensive and defensive lines, featuring 6-foot-7, 330-pound senior Andrew Racosky. Prior to that conversation, FNP sports writer Alexander Dacy joins Greg to share his early observations from preseason football practices. The two discuss the FNP's Preseason Top 5, as well as next week's big debut for girls flag football as a varsity sport in Frederick County.
What's the role of a National Governing Body for sport in 2023? Is the NGB business model relevant or sustainable? These are questions running through this episode of The Squeezed Middle, our series created in collaboration with PTI Digital, the technology and strategy consultancy. Our focus is on the hugely popular sport of cycling, which at an elite level has been one of the great British success stories over the past two decades, creating a cast of superstar athletes and a haul of Olympic gold medals. But what was the impact of that success? And what does it tells us about how sport is run and the relationship between the two sides of the NGB's job, which is high performance and mass participation.Jon Dutton was appointed CEO of British Cycling in April this year, having held the same role at the 2022 Rugby League World Cup. Previous to that Dutton held senior roles across sport including the 2014 Tour de France Grand Depart, PGA European Tour and UEFA, and is a Board member of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships held in Glasgow this month.Joining the conversation is Ben Wells, CEO of PTI Digital. For the next few weeks I'll be interspersing my new interviews with some of my favourite past episodes as I'm away from home and haven't booked too many calls in :) In this flash back with the Tassie adventurer, Ben Wells, from March 2022, :) In this episode Ben Well's shares his love of the Tassie wilderness. FTX, the second biggest cryptocurrency exchange filed for bankruptcy in the US, and the company's founder Sam Bankman-Fried, previously referred to as the King of Crypto, stepped down as chief executive. In the filing, FTX estimated that it had between $10bn and $50bn in assets and liabilities and more than 100,000 creditors, including some of the biggest names in sport, from the Miami Heat to Tom Brady, Mercedes Formula One team and the MLB.The FTX brand has become a familiar presence over the past two years, signing a series of high value sport sponsorships. So what happens now? Both to the money promised and not yet delivered but also to the sports economy more widely, as its relationship with crypto and associated categories comes under intense scrutiny. What are the conversations taking place today throughout the commercial offices of Premier League football clubs, Formula One teams and other major sports rights holders. On this episode Steve Wyss is joined by Norwegian football analyst & expert Ben Wells. We talk about all things Norway in great detail. Starting with the National team, what have been the recent challenges facing this side, including the forfeit vs Romania and upcoming fixture vs Austria. There is a ‘Golden Generation’ of talent at their disposal but is Lars Lagerbäck the right man to lead them forward? What are the reasons behind this sudden upturn in Norwegian talent? Ben has covered the OBOS Ligaen for many years so we are able to have a detailed discussion about the state of affairs in the Norwegian 2nd tier. What clubs are going well this year and hear how competitive the division is right now. Plus, who are the best talents to watch out for in OBOS, ready for the next level? Over in the Eliteserien Steve and Ben discuss the phenomenon of Bodø/Glimt and how this club has revolutionised Norwegian football in the last two years. What is the long term prognosis for them and can they challenge perennially? Detailed talks on Vålerenga & Brann follow. How does Ben rate Dag Eilev Fagermo’s first season at VIF and what has gone so badly wrong at Brann? Should ‘manager of the year’ contender Martí Cifuentes have taken over there mid season? We round off the pod by talking about Ben’s upcoming book on Norwegian football which is set for release in 2022. This was a great episode to pick the brains of a fantastic expert and we thank him for his time. In this CXNext episode, Ben Wells, Digital Banking Officer, AVP at Decorah Bank & Trust in Decorah, Iowa, joined us. Ben and I discussed how high-touch relationships coupled with top-shelf technology are changing the world of retail banking.

Q: David Bowie’s Vocals On "Heroes". Bowie's voice starts dry and then has this huge reverb that develops deeper as he sings stronger and then automatically becomes more intimate and up close as he sings more softly. How'd they do that? A: Here's the answer straight from Tony Visconti, the man who came up with the idea. "I set up three microphones. We only had two or three tracks left, and I needed one of these for backing vocals. I couldn’t even bounce down, and so we’d snookered ourselves. "Therefore, even though I would have ideally loved to put each mic on a separate track – enabling us to capture the whole room when he sang loud, and just that one mic right in front of his face when he sang quietly – I put gates on mics two and three. Mic number one was in front of him with fairly heavy compression, because I knew beforehand that he was really going to shout, and it all went down to one track. This was recording by the seat of your pants, and Bowie was thrilled with the idea that I wanted to do something unique. He thrives on anything that’s different and someone else hasn’t thought of yet, and I just thought ‘Let’s do this live,’ because he’s a great singer and he could always sing it again if I made a mistake. That’s the luxury of working with him: he’s consistently good when he sings. He’s in tune, he’s passionate, and he delivers an arena-type performance every time. "Mic number one was a valve U47, and with the other two on gates I made sure that number two, an 87 placed about 15 feet away from him, would go on at a certain level, while the third mic, another 87 that was all the way at the other end of the room, didn’t open up until he really sang loud. That reverb on his voice is therefore the room itself, none of it is artificial, and it’s his voice triggering the gates. What is really great is that the sound of the opening two verses is really intimate. It doesn’t sound like a big room yet, it sounds like somebody just singing about a foot away from your ear. The whole idea worked, and what you hear on the record is probably take three." http://www.bowiewonderworld.com/chats/dbchattonyv0800.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/“Heroes?_(song) Thanks for this great idea from Dave from Cincinnati! Check out his site: LeisureBand.com For submitting such a great idea we're sending Dave a free copy of Guitar & Drum Trainer courtesy of Ryan Smith over at RenegadeMinds.com. Congratulations to Austin Moore from Manchester UK for getting the answer exactly right! He's also a Music Technology Lecturer at the University Of Huddersfield and a dance music producer. Check out his sites: ShaFunkers.com & Musictech.hud.ac.uk Austin takes home a free copy of Guitar and Drum Trainer from RenegadeMinds.com! Also coming in with the correct answer just after Austin was Trevor Thornton and Ben Wells from Tasmania. We also have a couple of Honorable Mentions. These were both great guesses and actually interesting and usable techniques in their own right! Lloyd Murphy “I think Bowie’s voice was sent to a buss which had a gate followed by a verb on it. Singing quietly would allow for a dry, intimate vocal because the gate remained closed. However, when the singing got loud, the gate would open allowing the signal to go through the verb effect.? Andrew Brierly from the Home Recording Odyssey Podcast “The most low tech way that I can think of is to use real reverb, i.e. a room with great reverb characteristics, then sing back from the mic for the loud section were the reverb will show up and sing close and personal for the quiet parts were the reverb will be far less noticeable.?
