Live from Pawnee: A Parks and Recreation Fan Rewatch Podcast
This week Mark and Allen break down the Episode where Ben has his first day as Pawnee City Manager! As Leslie returns to her position as Deputy Director of Parks and Rec on a full-time basis, she expects everything to be the same as it was when she left. However, she instead sees many differences: April is handling Animal Control with ease, and Tom's firing on all cylinders in his new role of Business Liaison. Tom mentions his project to enlist a juice company to run a lemonade stand in one of Pawnee's parks to replace a retiring hot stew chef, and states he will be pitching the idea to the Pawnee Small Business Coalition. While somewhat impressed with Tom's initiative, Leslie is NOT impressed with Tom's decision to do things HIS way, instead of following her presentation guidelines that have been a Parks Department staple for 10 years. Worried Tom will fail in his presentation, Leslie decides to convince the hot stew chef to NOT go into retirement, deciding to represent him, and ultimately planning to go head-to-head with Tom in front of the Small Business Coalition. Meanwhile, Ben has an open house on his first day as Pawnee City Manager. He attempts to show everyone (particularly April, Andy, and Donna) that he is very cool, calm, and laid back. However, he ALSO implements a number of new rules to assert his position as a no-nonsense boss. Sensing Ben is wound very tight, the trio decide to prank him with a false arrest to "lighten him up". Two Pawnee police officers end up escorting a terrified Ben down to the station, trumping up ridiculous charges the whole way, until Ben thinks he'll never see the light of day again ... until April, Andy, and Donna come to the police station and reveal the prank. Even though the trio thinks it's hilarious, Ben is NOT amused. Finally, in the middle of taking pictures around City Hall to show their unborn baby where they met, Chris and Ann consider their situation and their plans for the future, and spontaneously decide they should get married. They head to a jewelry store in Pawnee, where they begin shopping for an engagement ring. Listening to another engaged couple also shopping there, they realize how much forethought is typically put into something like this, and start to question not only whether or not they want to buy the ring, but whether or not they want to get married. As always, we tackle the tough questions, such as ... Can Tom get his lemonade stand idea going? Did Ben pee his pants at the police station? Will Ann and Chris decide to get married? What will happen to the hot stew stand? Will Ben try to do anything in retaliation? What will Ann and Chris buy at the jewelry store? Will Leslie be able to get back into the rhythm of things? Did Andy like the illegal french cheese? Will Jerry die of cracker-dust inhalation? Loyal viewers, Mark and Allen are really on their game during this episode - tune in and enjoy! Welcome to the LoDown, a podcast exploring the voices in and outside the entertainment industry and hosted by Lois Robbins. On this episode of the LoDown, Lois speaks with the hilarious Beth Hall! Beth recently played Wendy Harris on CBS' sitcom, Mom. She has a knack for playing captivating roles in television. Her catalog includes short stints on Murphy Brown, Frasier, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Parks and Recreation. She played a recurring character in Mad Men and, if you haven't watched her in that. Well, you should. On the show, Beth shares her love for working on Mom - the cast and writing. She really appreciated a space where a major sitcom can handle difficult subjects and still stay funny. Those are truly special gems! Lois and Beth also discuss the ebb and flow of being a mom in the industry. Beth opens up about her adoption journey and raising a kid in quarantine. Shoutout to all the parents who survived quarantine with their kids. Also, ageism towards women in Hollywood is still on the top of Lois and Beth's minds. While Mom had a great group of “advanced” women, the instrustry still has a lot of work to do to show that representation of older actresses. We're hoping to see Beth star in her own sitcom in the near future! Choreographer Taja Will has watched performances of the Naked Stages Fellows in Minneapolis for years, and they always appreciate the innovative voices of the solo performers. Each performance is the product of a seven month-long fellowship, which allowed the artists to learn the business side of art while developing a creative work with a director of their choice. Courtesy of Pillsbury House Theatre Atlese Robinson is one of six recent Naked Stages fellows. The works are transdisciplinary, often combining text, movement, and music along with creative use of the space. This year, both the 2020 cohort, Alia Jeraj, Atlese Robinson, C. Michael Menge, and the 2021 group, Alys Ayumi Ogura, Margaret Ogas, Ashembaga (Ashe) Jaafaru, performed for a limited audience in December. The performances are available for ticketed streaming Jan. 15-30 via Pillsbury House and Theatre in Minneapolis. Beth Hall of Duluth recently visited the AICHO Gallery to see a new exhibit by local artist Ellen Sandbeck, entitled “As Long As the River Shall Run.” The show comprises a series of giclée prints of Sandbeck's multicolored, multilayered paper art. Each represents a section of the Mississippi River from its watershed to the Gulf. The exhibit at the American Indian Community Housing Organization in Duluth explains which of the species shown in the art works are endangered, native or invasive. Sandbeck includes extinct species, leaving the viewer to consider the effect of their loss on the food chain. Courtesy of Ivy Vainio, AICHO Galleries "Headwaters of the Mississippi River" by Ellen Sandbeck “What struck me besides the educational aspect of it was the sheer beauty and layered colors which gave everything depth and sometimes movement [seen] when standing back,” Hall said. A closer look reveals scissor cuts intricate enough to appear drawn. The exhibit is open to limited admissions, Tuesdays and Thursdays 4 to 6 p.m. through Feb. 25 at AICHO, with a community workshop on papercutting Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. Visual artist K. Daphnae Koop of Brooklyn Center plans to see the Moving Company's performance of “Anamnesis” for a third time when it reopens this month at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis. The show, subtitled “bits and pieces from a supposed previous existence,” knits together a series of sometimes-fantastical subplots under the frame of putting on a play. What keeps Koop returning to this show is the way it inspires a range of emotions. “There were absolutely heart-rending scenes left for a moment to settle in the air, and then with a new line and a chuckle the scene was over and the moment had passed,” Koop said. “The first time I saw the play especially, I felt like I had just been through my emotional experience of the last two years — they encapsulated it in an evening of theater.” The show runs Thursday, Jan. 13 through Jan. 30. Masks are required, as is proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test within 72 hours. Looking for more weekend activities? Subscribe to The 'sotan newsletter

In this homily on Christ the King Sunday, The Rev. Beth Hall, Assistant to the Rector of St. George Episcopal Church, reflects on the Gospel for the day. Rev. Beth discusses the stark contrasts contained in the Gospel and asks who will you call when life is tough. She states that some might run from God's provision of atonement fearing what He might do to them. However, God's plans are for good, not evil; he wants to rescue us from the sins that endanger our lives. Jesus is always there for us; His love is beyond our comprehension. On this Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost, The Rev. Beth Hall, Assistant to the Rector of St George Episcopal Church, discusses the Gospel reading for the day. She states that this passage often has been used to keep people in abusive, loveless relationships. However, Jesus wants the best in life for each of us. She states that we must claim the gift of God's love like a little child would. As we open ourselves to Christ's gift, we will know the kind of love where we feel safe, secure, nourished and healed. In this homily on the Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost, The Rev. Beth Hall, Assistant to the Rector of St. George Episcopal Church, discusses how followers of Jesus “switched him off” because they questioned the voracity of his teachings. Similarly, today with the current turmoil we are experiencing, many also may feel ready to “switch off Jesus”. However, she encourages us to hold on. When we think we can go no further, we should focus on the powerful love of God and know that Jesus is with us and will guide us through life's tribulations. The Night House is what happens when David Bruckner the director of V/H/S segment "Amateur Night" and Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski the writers of the film it ultimately became, SiREN realize they should absolutely make a movie together. The result was a horror film that brought jump scares that were actually earned. Couple that with a story that was compelling, a great use of sound and a lead in Rebecca Hall who balances a character that is part crazy and being haunted into being crazier and what you get is a very good horror film. The camera angles used in The Night House are fantastic. Angles are used to create “living” shadows that move as the camera moves and leave you wondering if Beth (Hall) is being haunted by her dead husband or is spiraling out of control. Added to that is the use of sound and music. Fair warning, if you're watching this film at home with a surround sound system, be prepared for some terrifying sounds creeping over your left shoulder at times. Hall's performance in The Night House is reminiscent of Riz Ahmed's in Mogul Mowgli. She's asked to do a lot of the heavy lifting here (not in a bad way) and excels. She balances playing the grieving widow, suspicious wife and emotionally compromised person extremely well and at times is playing all three roles as once. The biggest issue that The Night House has is that the ending is a big unsatisfying. But even that is due to how good the story is. By the time the film comes to it's ending, you realize there's a third story that gets revealed that will leave the audience wanting more. David Bruckner definitely has a win on his hands with The Night House. Knowing that he will be reuniting with writer Ben Collins on the Hellraiser remake should raise the interest in that film. For now though, The Night House is definitely something to check out. Like what you hear? Subscribe so you don't miss an episode! In this homily on the Second Sunday after Pentecost, The Rev. Beth Hall, Assistant to the Rector at St. George Episcopal Church, expounds on the Gospel reading – Mark 3:20-35. She points out how the religious leaders in Jesus' day did not recognize his powers as God given and instead thought they came from Satan. They did not understand how God's saving love overpowers Satan nor did they understand that by proclaiming belief in Jesus, they would enjoy everlasting life instead of death. We as followers of Christ are his family and know that Jesus and his love are with us through the ups and downs of life. We are stronger with Christ in our lives and this knowledge is freeing, healing, and brings hope to our future. How does forgiveness create transformation? Join us as we gather to reset our new daily rhythm and build resilience during this time of change. Today, I’m excited to have Ron and Beth Hall. Ron Hall’s life was centered around a successful career as an international art dealer and a passion for his Rocky Top ranch on the Brazos River. All this changed in 1998 as a result of an encounter with a homeless man who was threatening to kill everyone in sight in the homeless shelter where Ron had begun to volunteer two weeks earlier. This life-changing encounter, featured on many television and radio shows, inspired Ron to write his first book SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME, a story of hope and redemption. The word-of-mouth hit became a New York Times platinum bestseller and stayed on the list for more than three and one-half years. In 2007, President Bush appointed Ron to the State Department Cultural Property Committee to advise the President on diplomatic matters regarding international art and antiquities. Currently, Ron is the screenwriter and producer of the movie version of his book SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME, which can be found on Netflix and Amazon. His new book, Working Our Way Home released Feb. 20 2018. Ron and his wife Beth reside in Dallas where they direct the Same Kind of Different as Me Foundation. I’m happy to have Ron & Beth share how they’re finding Rhythm and Resilience right now, and how we can do the same. I invite you to tune in as we unite as a community. Looking forward to spending time together for some R & R. Join Dr. Michelle, Ron, and Beth as they talk about: A dream about a homeless man named Denver, who Ron later met and befriended. On today's episode, I am coming to you LIVE from the Blue Carpet at the 2018 Paley Festival in Los Angeles. Today's guests are cast members from the hit shows "The Orville" and "Mom". Paley Fest took place at the Dolby Theater, and it was such an honor to be a part of this year's fesitvities. Aside from our carpet interviews, I also had the oppotunity to attend screenings and panels for "The Good Doctor" and "Queen Sugar". Cast members that joined me were: Peter Macon, Mark Jackson, Rico Anderson, and Penny Johnson Jerald from "The Orville", and Jamie Pressly and Beth Hall from "Mom". While I did get a moment with Allison Janney, sadly she had to get to the panel and couldn't do an interview. I talked to the casts about their roles on the show, preparring for their roles, their careers, acting advice and more. A huge thanks to the Paley Center for allowing me to be a part of this years festival. It was such an honor. If you haven't checked out "The Orville" or "Mom", I would highly suggest watching both. Thanks to the casts of both shows for taking the time to talk to me as well. See you next year, Paley Fest! Enjoy the episode.
