You can find the podcast on Threads, Instagram and Bluesky. I Married a Monster from Outer Space was released as part of a double bill (with The Blob) in 1958. The story focuses on newlywed couple Marge and Bill Farrell but unbeknownst to his new bride and the whole town Bill has been replaced by an alien on the eve of their wedding. Themes of marriage, resentments and gendered expectations are as rife as can be expected in the 1950s. We have two insightful experts help shine a light on these themes. The Experts Thomas Doherty is a professor of American Studies at Brandeis University, he is a cultural historian with a special interest in Hollywood cinema on which he has written extensively. Sherryl Vint is Professor of Science Fiction Media Studies at the University of California, Riverside. She has written/edited many books about science fiction. Chapters 00:00 Introduction 01:58 Science fiction golden age and the marriage melodrama 05:27 The female led sci-fi film and Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique 08:40 Patriarchal expectations of 1950s men 13:24 Changes in post war America 16:33 The Hays production code and the scandalous double bed 21:19 The Alien: looking good and learning to love 26:14 Marge's dilemma30:42 Romantic, sexual and gendered anxiety 39:20 Devil Girl from Mars: Aliens are coming to take our men! 41:36 Legacy 45:59 Recommendations for the listenersNEXT EPISODE! Next episode we will be hopping slightly back in time and discussing The Mysterians from 1957. Candice and Bill Farrell are breeders of Goldendoodles, located on the outskirts of Red Deer, Alberta. Their ultimate goal is to produce happy, healthy, loving and well-socialized family pets. Candice and Bill take their dog rearing extremely seriously; you won't find their dogs in cages and treated like livestock. They are all family pets that either live with them or with one of their Guardian Families. The dogs and puppies are bred, raised and cared for with love and attention every single day. They are also provided with top quality food, regular vet care, clean surroundings, regular grooming and toys for their entertainment. Candice says of her husband, “The doodles and I are lucky to have my husband work long days with us when he is home on his days off. He works as hard as I do while he's home and jokes that he has to go back to work to get a break.” The love for the business and for the animals is very obvious and strong with these two! Candice and Bill are dedicated to always giving their all when it comes to the Doodles; they do things the right way, even though is hard work. They take pride in taking care of all the dogs to the highest degree, and it shows in the happiness of the dogs when they are picked up to go to their new homes. Candice and Bill truly believe that they help create and spread happiness and bring joy with these beautiful bouncing little bundles of fur, and their loyal customers and happy pups can attest to that. With early family roots as coal miners in Pennsylvania, Bill Farrell’s father was able to go on to become president and CEO of one of the largest U.S. trade organizations. By watching his father’s success in both business and family matters, Bill was able to learn lessons and emulate a goal of integrity, self-reliance, and humility. Bill had a successful law firm career, but before that Bill was a prosecutor in Cook County, Chicago, Illinois, at the time described by some as the “murder capital of the world.” He later transitioned his people-listening skills and strength in understanding client motivations on a very personal level into his commercial litigation work, culminating in his role in the founding of Longford Capital, a litigation funding company.

It was Monday. It didn’t snow. That’s all you need to know. This is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look back at the scores and more from the world of wrestling, I’m Jason Bryant. Oh, I bought a standing desk today. I’ll put it in the office when that finally gets done. Ever seen The Money Pit? Yeah, two weeks.  Dual Meets:  Six teams pulled notable upsets over the weekend, with Rider pulling the biggest, going into Minneapolis and beating No. 6 Minnesota 21-17. Even with some controversy over skin checks, No. 10 Lehigh knocked off No. 4 Oklahoma State 21-20 on criteria. No. 11 Virginia Tech went into Columbus and beat No. 3 Ohio State 21-15 and one that was overlooked by many was Michigan State beating No. 20 Oklahoma 21-16. Stanford topped No. 17 North Carolina 21-11 and No. 21 Northwestern scored a modest upset over No. 14 Northern Iowa 24-20. While behind the paywall at Flo, David Bray tracked down all the upsets he could find and counted up 38 individual upsets, including 11 wrestlers in the top 10 going down. Again, while I don’t link to the paywalled content from any outlet, if you have a FloPro subscription, that feature is worth reading, even if you like another outlet’s rankings.  Also finally expect some shake-ups in the NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll this week as we’ve finally got some duals to shake out who’s legit and who’s just tough on paper.  Tournaments One tournament of note saw Penn State win four titles, but Army West Point won the team title. The Nittany Lions wrestled half their starters, the Black Knights wrestled a ton of their roster. I get annoyed when I see tournaments “score” opens, but this was an invitational. Should the fact Penn State entered a team-scored tournament and not win it be relevant or should, as Clay Sauertieg puts it, have an asterisk?   International Wrestling The U.S. finished second to Japan, losing 7-3 at the Women’s World Cup in Narita, Japan over the weekend. Japan showed its depth by using a number of athletes who have seen success at the age-group levels, but were more or less, senior-level unknowns. Adeline Gray, Jacarra Winchester and Tamyra Mensah-Stock were absolute beasts. As Americans, we are fortunate to be in a generation that’s seeing amazing growth in women’s wrestling and we currently have three dynamic athletes leading the charge on the senior level.  Bill Farrell happened. Want to know what happened? It’s covered everywhere, so I don’t need to rehash it here. By the way, literally everything in the Short Time Shots is actually covered by a story that’s included in the Daily Wrestling News. I hit the key topics here, but the best way to be the most educated fan in the block or at the bar, is to go to mattalkonline.com/news and wake up every morning with the news of the day.  GET A FREE MONTH OF PODCAST HOSTING WITH LIBSYN There are approximately 66 active wrestling podcasts out there, with 20 of them on the Mat Talk Podcast Network. I get asked all the time about what people need to start a podcast. One of the most important things is a podcast host. Go to www.takedowncancer.org for information or contact Mark Neu at mneu@shakopee.k12.mn.usLet’s TakeDown Cancer! - No one fights alone! Notables on the Docket for November 19: Tuesday is a typical dual meet day for the Ohio Athletic Conference and this Tuesday is no different as four duals take place there, all in Division III. Heidelberg, which you should know their nickname by now, takes on the Blue Streaks of John Carroll, Muskingum, they’re the Muskies, face Mount Union, which are the Purple Raiders, the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace, now sans hyphen, heads to Ohio Northern to face the Polar Bears, because that’s what you think of when you think of Ohio. Lastly, Otterbein, which is the more traditional Cardinals, will face the Fighting Quakers of Wilmington.  In the NAIA, Graceland will face Baker, while Simpson (Calif.) will take on Lassen of the California Community Colleges. That’ll be the last dual officially scheduled for the teams out in the California Community College system as the state dual meet championship gets underway this weekend.   FROM THE DWN: Andy Hamilton of Trackwrestling follows up the competition from the Bill Farrell Memorial with a Writing Time feature on who the man Bill Farrell was and his unique background and history in wrestling and sporting goods.  Tom Housenick of The Morning Call in Allentown, Pennsylvania writes about the loss of a Nazareth wrestling family’s home in a fire. A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family of DeShawn Farber, with putting their life back together after losing pretty much everything.  Just about every wrestling and MMA site has been covering this story, but two-time NCAA champion, four-time All-American and 2008 Olympian Ben Askren announced he was retiring from MMA today on Ariel Helwani’s MMA show.  We just had a Greco-Roman event, which means Tim Hands from FivePointMove.com is on the case. Actually, it’s Monday, so that means Tim Hands from FivePointMove is on the case with his Monday Roundup, which he posts every Monday, as the name implies. I had this in Monday morning’s Daily Wrestling News, but it bears repeating here on the show, since TheMat.com also posted the announcement from the Sparta Independent that Sussex County Community College will be adding wrestling. They’ve hired former Centenary wrestler Chris Burdge as the first head coach. Burdge was a four-time Division III All-American from 2011-2014. Keeping things Jersey, NCAA champions Nick Suriano and Anthony Ashnault of Rutgers will be part of NCAA Collegiate National Champions day in Washington D.C. In other words, they get to go to the White House. You may now start your banter about the nation’s politics, but do that on your own time - I don’t care.  Wartburg will honor the late Kenny Anderson, a three-time Division III national champion who passed away earlier this fall on November 20 in the Knights dual against Simpson College. Wartburg’s won 30 straight against the Storm.  The weekly load of Wrestlers of the Week are starting to drop. You can get a ton of them in Tuesday’s newsletter.  Finally, Dan Gable is the big cheese. Or in this case, he’s made of big cheese. File this under things you really don’t need to know, but you need to see, Go Iowa Awesome, a snarky, but often hilarious sports blog covering Iowa, shows us what Dan Gable looks like when he’s carved out of cheese. In Minnesota, it would have been butter.  On The Network Nothing coming out other than this show on Monday, but the rest of this week, we’ll have shows from On The Mat, Rocked Up, ODU Monarch Matcast, Inside Virginia Tech Wrestling and possibly something from Hall of Fame Legends, but that might have to wait until the lull over Thanksgiving. Sometimes you have to pivot. I had every intention of putting together another episode of The Guillotine Grapevine here on the Mat Talk Podcast Network, but sometimes things don’t go as planned, as you’re about to find out. This is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more from the world of wrestling, I’m Jason Bryant.  Dual Meets:  The biggest upset of the night and one of the bigger upsets in the past several years saw unranked Rider come into Williams Arena in Minneapolis and knock off No. 6 Minnesota 21-17. The key wins came from Jonathan Tropea at 125 pounds and Dean Sherry at 174 pounds. Sherry pinned All-American Devin Skatzka in one of the most exciting three minutes of wrestling. Instead of talking you through it, I talked with Rider coach John Hangey about the match and its impact on the Rider program. Rider’s Ryan Cloud won an absolutely not thrilling bout 1-0 at 285 over Bobby Steveson to lock up the win for the Broncs. (Hangey Interview) In other Top 25 action, No. 3 Ohio State won six out of 10 at No. 15 Pittsburgh, but it was bonus points that blew the match open for coach Tom Ryan’s Buckeyes. Ohio State prevailed 23-12. Kollin Moore opened the dual with a major at 197, Chase Singletary scored a mild upset over Demetrius Thomas at heavyweight, Luke Pletcher, no, that’s not a typo, got a major at 141 pounds over Cole Matthews, while Sammy Sasso picked up a fall at 149 pounds. The Buckeyes return home to face No. 11 Virginia Tech on Sunday.  In Philadelphia, No. 4 Oklahoma State won eight out of 10 bouts to open its dual season with a 30-6 win over Drexel. Cowboy 165-pounder Travis Wittlake knocked off Ebed Jarrell 5-1. John Smith also tied Bobby Douglas for fifth on the all-time collegiate dual wins list with his 427th victory.  No. 8 Arizona State won its home opener 35-6 over Division II Augustana (S.D.). We’ll save the story of that dual for what’s in the Daily Wrestling Newsletter.  No. 9 NC State always seems to get a fight from ODU and Friday was no different. The Wolfpack would prevail 22-11 after getting a huge fall at 197 pounds from Tyrie Houghton to go along with ranked wins by top-ranked Hayden Hidlay at 157 over Larry Early and Tariq Wilson’s 3-2 win over Sa’Derian Perry at 141.  Elsewhere in Division I, Northern Illinois beat Bucknell 24-10, Binghamton beat South Dakota State 25-16, Oregon State beat Division II Simon Fraser 40-8 in Tahoma, Washington. I deliberately didn’t post this until Fresno State and Rutgers were finished. Rutgers won 23-13. Did Fresno State set their school’s attendance record? No, but they still drew a solid 3,500-plus. Division II Coker beat NAIA St. Andrews 45-8. In Division III No. 1 Wabash shut out Manchester 45-0, No. 15 Ithaca topped Stevens Institute 29-12, Williams beat Trinity 28-18, Lycoming beat Thiel 40-6 and smashed NJCAA Jamestown (N.Y.) 51-3. Thiel beat Jamestown 44-6. In the NAIA, Concordia (Neb.) beat Northwestern (Iowa) 29-10 and Southern Oregon beat Warner Pacific 36-16. Campbellsville swept a quad at Embry-Riddle. The Tigers beat Arizona Christian 32-6, host Embry-Riddle 33-9 and Vanguard 43-3. So two wins over first-year teams. Play nice Franky James!  In junior college action, Minnesota West beat Northland Tech 36-21.  Late Thursday: Fresno City beat Bakersfield 42-6, while Modesto beat Skyline and West Hills. Central Baptist beat Oklahoma Wesleyan 24-22.  Tournaments In Bristol, Rhode Island, Johnson & Wales is out to an early Day 1 lead at the Roger Williams Invitational. Following the Wildcats are Castleton, TCNJ, NYU and host Roger Williams.  International Wrestling Day 1 of the Bill Farrell came and went as the most important aspect was athletes qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in April in State College. In Greco, five Americans won titles - Ryan Mango at 60kg, Alex Sancho at 67kg, Alan Vera at 87kg, G’Angelo Hancock at 97kg and Adam Coon at 130kg. Also qualifying was Sammy Jones at 60kg and Spencer Woods at 77kg. In women’s freestyle competition at the Bill Farrell, Victoria Anthony beat Erin Golston to win gold at 50kg. Golston qualified for the Trials by being the highest placing American who wasn’t already qualified. Areana Villaescusa and Alex Glaude also qualified. Of note at 76kg, Erica Wiebe of Canada, the 2016 Olympic champion, beat 2014 world silver medalist Aline da Silva of Brazil 4-0 for gold.  Women’s World Cup in Narita, Japan kicked off. The U.S. was wrestling Russia at the time this show was being recorded. Notables on the Docket for November 16: There’s like nearly 100 duals or something tomorrow. I can’t possibly list them all. The biggest is No. 4 Oklahoma State at No. 10 Lehigh.  FROM THE DWN: Travis Johnson of Trackwrestling gets a look at Stanford looking to take its next step after its first Pac-12 title, a quick glimpse at Oklahoma State-Lehigh, a look at Northern Iowa’s Bryce Steiert, now up at 174 and a note about Josh Shields from Arizona State.  InterMat’s Tim “T.R.” Foley starts out remembering Paul Wellstone before answering reader questions in his weekly Foley’s Friday Mailbag feature.  Greg Moore of the Arizona Republic features Roman Rozell, a 34-year-old Army combat veteran who will be believed to be the oldest starter in Division I wrestling when he takes to the mat against Division II Augustana (S.D.). This story will be dated by the time you hear this, but it’s still worth the read. Rozell wrestled at 197 on Friday night, getting pinned in ASU’s only loss of the evening. But still.  We’ve got an abundance of international stars competing at the Bill Farrell, so here’s a few to keep an eye on, courtesy of TheMat.com.  Speaking of TheMat.com, Taylor Miller of USA Wrestling writes a pretty solid feature on Anthony Echemendia. Did you know he turned 19 in a detention center while trying to get to the United States? Good job T-Millz on that piece.  The RUDIS Podcast, The Way, with Cary Kolat and Matt Dernlan go into college officiating. This … should be interesting.  The Mid-American Conference released its November coaches rankings at GetSomeMaction.com. Missouri still No. 1, followed by Old Dominion, Lock Haven, Rider and Clarion.  Cronkite News, a program produced by students at the amazing journalism at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State, features Marlee Smith, the only woman on the wrestling team at Arizona State. Zeke Jones has women and combat vets on the roster. That’s dynamic.  On The Network The 10th installment of #ROCKedUP, the story about the foundation and formation of the wrestling program at Little Rock has been posted. When you look at the entirety of the situation, it’s probably one of the most unique stories ever told in wrestling. Someone, anyone, please tell me why Party in the U.S.A. is stuck in my head. I don’t own that song, but I believe the reason for this is the fact I live in a house with three females and one of them might actually own one of the NOW music CDs. I actually own NOW, when there wasn’t a volume. NOW, Volume 1, which is not its real name, had some rock on it. It also had some sappy late 90s R&B that I fell out of favor with once I discovered how badass Phil Anselmo and Pantera was. Walk on home, boy. This is Short Time Shots, your mostly daily look at the scores and news from the world of wrestling. I’m Jason Bryant. So far, this will be 14 straight episodes. There likely won’t be one on Friday night, since I’ll be covering the Gopher dual and putting out an episode of The Guillotine Grapevine. Maybe I’ll record it on Saturday morning for you guys as you make the last mow of the season, or in some cases, the first snow shovel of the year worth it.  Dual Meets:  Unranked Illinois, fresh off getting beat by Army West Point last weekend, rebounded with a 19-14 win over border rival and 13th ranked Missouri at Francis Howell High School in St. Louis on Thursday night. Missouri did have the services of All-American Grant Leeth at 141, but were without Dylan Wisman at 184. Illinois had key wins at 125 as Justin Cardani beat Dack Punke and then three in a row from 165-184 to take the lead heading into the dual’s final two weights. Freshman heavyweight Luke Luffman prevailed 9-7 over Rodrigo Diaz to give Illinois the upset. Division II Colorado School of Mines shut down Northeastern Junior College 34-9. Also out in Colorado, Western Colorado beat Chadron State 28-13 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  Elmhurst beat the University of Chicago 33-19 as the Bluejays benefited from three Chicago forfeits. Maroons All-Americans Steve Bonsall and Ben Sarasin were both victorious.  A couple of junior colleges picked up wins over Division III foes - Mercyhurst North East topped Pitt-Bradford 31-18, while Joliet Junior College beat MacMurray 36-18. Lincoln, which is in its first year as an NAIA member after transitioning from a two-year school to a four-year one, also beat MacMurray 34-18. In Georgia, Brewton-Parker, with a hyphen, knocked off Truett McConnell, sans hyphen, 38-12.  Nothing reported from CSU-Pueblo and Otero, Central Baptist and Oklahoma Wesleyan or the two duals out west in the California Community Colleges.  Late Wednesday: Neosho County and head coach Nick Nothern knocked off rival Labette 26-16 in Chanute. That’s action in the NJCAA in case you were wondering. The Panthers swept six bouts between 149 and 197 to take the dual.  GET A FREE MONTH OF PODCAST HOSTING WITH LIBSYN There are approximately 63 active wrestling podcasts out there, with 20 of them on the Mat Talk Podcast Network. Go to www.takedowncancer.org for information or contact Mark Neu at mneu@shakopee.k12.mn.usLet’s TakeDown Cancer! - No one fights alone! Notables on the Docket for November 15: Super solid Friday night for wrestling: No. 3 Ohio State heads to Pittsburgh to take on the No. 15 Panthers, No. 4 Oklahoma State will have its first dual of the season as it heads to Philly to take on Drexel. No. 6 Minnesota hosts Rider at Williams Arena, I’ll be there for that one, as will BDI. No. 8 Arizona State opens its home slate against Division II Augustana (S.D.), No. 9 NC State hosts Old Dominion, which was ranked last week and fell out of the rankings despite not losing. Same thing happened to Wyoming. Binghamton faces South Dakota State in Sioux Falls, Bucknell heads to Northern Illinois, Division II Simon Fraser faces Oregon State in Tahoma, Washington and Rutgers heads to Fresno State where the Bulldogs are trying to break their own attendance record, looking for 10,000 fans in the SaveMart Center.  Notable matches from other divisions include Ithaca traveling to Stevens Institute, Manchester at Wabash, more news on them in a second, Campbellsville and the first-year program at Arizona Christian facing Embry-Riddle - not at same time, that would be unfair and there’s a doubleheader with the men’s and women’s programs with Southern Oregon going to Portland to face Warner Pacific. Tournament-wise, the Roger Williams Invitational kicks off in Bristol, Rhode Island.  FROM THE DWN: Minnesota profiles senior Carson Brolsma with the now overused Q&A segment called Seven Minutes. The Open Mat actually started that, then Trackwrestling adopted it after TOM stopped doing it. And now we have it in Minnesota. It’s like every column in every wrestling magazine being called The Inside Trip - with apologies to Brando and B-Law with The Inside Trip podcast. End snarky note.  The week will continue with posts from the early signing period. Some schools went all out on day one, while others are trickling out their early classes. While not directly linked in this section, Thursday’s releases are in the newsletter.  We’ve got a new No. 1 in Division III wrestling, mainly because the rankings in the early season released by the Division III Coaches Association are on tournament points. Loras, the preseason No. 1, didn’t lose, but slid one spot to No. 2. This is why tournament rankings are absolute crap UNTIL the postseason. Next week’s rankings, as the release says, will be dual strength. I’d have just held off the team rankings this week, since there was plenty of movement in the individual rankings. Oh, that new No. 1, by the way, the Little Giants of Wabash.  Missouri’s sports information office features alum and UFC fighter Tyron Woodley, while Penn State has an in-house feature on Creighton Edsell, an unlikely small town starter who came up with a win in last week’s dual against Navy.  Flowrestling looks at Fresno State’s drive to break its attendance record and eclipse the 10,000-fan mark in their upcoming dual against Rutgers.  The Predicament goes into the Where Are They Now with the Inside the Rivalry series. Well, where are they now and what are they all doing?  Mason Beckman makes a guest appearance with a preview of the Bill Farrell Memorial on the Home Mat Advantage at 74kg.  TheMat.com gives us the full U.S.-centric Bill Farrell preview as well.  Flowrestling borrows Tim Hands of Five Point Move for their extensive Greco-Roman preview, not paywalled.  Patch.com, a collection of like 1,200 hyperlocal news websites, features Penn State wrestling alum Rohan Murphy and his message to inmates at Suffolk County Correctional Facility. Rohan is an amazing dude. Born with no legs, he’s got a great message to share about perseverance.  The Southern Illinoisan, yes, that is the actual name of the newspaper, featured Carbondale Community High School coach Dennis Ragan and his recent induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame via the Illinois chapter. If that name and location lead you to connect some dots - la la la la - then you’re right. It’s Alli’s dad.  And the biggest Bud heavy advocate in wrestling, Willie Saylor, drops an interview on his MatScouts Rokfin channel that Blair Academy’s Travis Mastrogiovanni, the No. 4 recruit in the Class of 2021 is heading to Oklahoma State, where his brother Trevor has also committed.  On The Network With a big weekend upcoming, the #PackMentality Pop-Ins Podcast with host Brian Reinhardt talks with NC State head wrestling coach Pat Popolizio, as well as Jakob Camacho, Tariq Wilson and Hayden Hidlay. Thye host ODU on Friday, the Wolfpack Duals on Saturday and the Wolfpack Wrestling Club Open on Sunday.  PA Power’s college podcast is up and out with Iowa’s Michael Kemerer and a recap of the PA-centric college scores from last week while Five Point Move talks with Jon Anderson of the Army’s World Class Athlete Program, who makes his return to competition at this weekend’s Bill Farrell. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow - somewhere else. You know what, I made my bed, so I’ll lie in it. I moved here. Like the point, counterpoint in the movie Airplane! said, they bought their tickets, they knew what they were getting into. I say, let’em crash. Well, let me shiver. This isn’t the weather report for New Brighton, Minnesota - but it’s close - welcome to Short Time Shots, your mostly daily look at the wrestling scores and more from around the world.  Minnesota Beer of the Night: In preparation for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, when I’m having a beer while putting this show together in the evening, I will enlighten you with that particular information. Tonight, it’s from probably my favorite or second-favorite Minnesota brewery, Fair State Brewing Cooperative. This one’s called Spirit Foul, a super rare collaboration with Modern Times Brewing out of San Diego, which is Spanish for a whale … you know. It’s a hazy IPA, which I’m starting to come around to. I’m not going to tell you about the flavor profile or something snooty like that. I like to try various beers, and I like to drink various beers. This is one I’ve gotten my hands on each of the last three years. It’s hard to find and sells out quickly. I will NOT be featuring Bud heavy, ever, on this show. Sorry Willie. Oh, if you’re on Untappd, find me there at jasonbryant12.  Dual Meets:  In the Chancellor’s Cup Dual, UW-Eau Claire won the first seven matches and cruised past UW-Oshkosh 25-9 in Eau Claire. The Blugolds were solid, picking up four major decisions en route to the win. We’re not sure where UW-Eau Claire’s Chancellor is going to put said cup, but my recommendation is to fill it up with Spotted Cow and drink from it as a chalice.  In the Keystone State, Division II Shippensburg topped Division III Elizabethtown 25-13 in E-Town on Wednesday. Wins by Austin Klucker and Dan Berberick at 197 and 285 enabled the Raiders to pull away for the win. Also in PA, Wilkes defeated Alvernia in that school’s first dual meet in school history 28-12.  In Ohio, Heidelberg - wait for it - defeated Wilmington 54-3. Still waiting. Yes, it’s my goal to teach everyone in this country the great wrestling mascots and nicknames we have. The Student Princes of Heidelberg. They used to be coached by current Army West Point assistant Ned Shuck.  Thomas More, which recently reclassified to the NAIA, defeated the second-year program at Ohio Wesleyan 27-19. Shay Horton, Avery Jones and Tyler Kassinger picked up falls for the Saints. No Elisabeth Shue references from The Saint today. Ok, just that one. Another NAIA over NCAA win came in Bristol, on the Tennessee side as Cumberland University beat King University 27-19. Cumberland fell behind 10-0 early before taking the lead for good after Dylan Quinn’s 17-10 win over Elijah Davis at 165. Heavyweight Patrick DePiazza sealed the win for the Phoenix. Yes, their named after a mythical firebird … or a city in Arizona.  Benedictine of Kansas beat Northwest Tech, also of Kansas 25-19 in a dual that won’t count for Benedictine. Why? NAIA rules stipulate that only competition against four-year varsity programs count for duals and individual records. Hey, I don’t make the rules. Oddly, if you’re an NCAA school, those matches do count. It counts for Northwest Tech, by the way. In a match that did count in the NAIA, Providence - the one in Montana - was impressive in winning all nine contested matches against Southern Oregon 35-6. In Arkansas, Division III University of the Ozarks beat Arkansas Baptist of the NJCAA 51-4. We close with the men’s and women’s doubleheader at UW-Stevens Point as the Pointers swept both matches over visiting Lakeland. UW-Stevens Point won the women’s dual 24-19, while the men’s dual wasn’t as close, with the Pointers sweeping all 10 matches over the Muskies in a 49-0 drubbing.  GET A FREE MONTH OF PODCAST HOSTING WITH LIBSYN There are approximately 63 active wrestling podcasts out there, with 20 of them on the Mat Talk Podcast Network. In a Chicagoland matchup, the Maroons of the University of Chicago travel to Elmhurst to face Steve Marianetti’s Bluejays. Chicago was actually a charter member of the Big Ten in 1896.  All Georgia matchup in the NAIA where Truett McConnell faces Brewton-Parker, Central Baptist is at Oklahoma Wesleyan, Providence heads to Eastern Oregon, while out in California, Fresno City faces Bakersfield and Skyline is at Modesto in the California Community Colleges.  FROM THE DWN: USA Wrestling and the United States Olympic and Paralymic Committee announced on Wednesday amendments to the 2020 Olympic Trials qualification process. The procedures initially made the highest American placewinner at the Dave Schultz Memorial a qualifier for the Trials. Well, due to scheduling issues, there is no Schultz this year, so the Last Chance Qualifier now has the top two wrestlers in each weight and style qualifying with a true second place match instituted, if needed.  TheMat.com also previews the Women’s World Cup, as Team USA features World Champions Adeline Gray, Tamyra Mensah-Stock and Jacarra Winchester.  United World Wrestling also provides an advance of the event, featuring World and Olympic champion Risako Kawai, written by an American journalist in Tokyo, Ken Marantz for UWW.  The saga of Anthony Echemendia, the Cuban-born Arizona high school star and his commitment has come to a close. Wrestling’s resident online antagonist Willie Saylor of MatScouts has a position on it via Rokfin, which this story is free. There you go Smalls. Oh, he’s going to be a Buckeye.  Sam Herring, the 13-year-old who’s one half of the Home Mat Advantage Podcast, previews the Bill Farrell at 57kg. Yes, I’m including content from a 13-year-old, because he deserves it.  The kid’s taking Latin. It might be a dead language, but how many of us actually know any more than a few words of Spanish? Come on. And yelling “rouge passive” doesn’t count, Rob Prebish. CoSIDA Recognition Week was November 6-12. CoSIDA is the membership organization for media relations professionals in college sports, and as the acronym says, the College Sports Information Directors of America. One of those awesome SIDs who makes our jobs easier is Michigan’s Leah Howard. She pens a piece on Michigan Hall of Famer John Fisher, which you can read at MGoBlue.com. Delaware Valley University announced world bronze medalist Leigh Jaynes as the program’s new full-time women’s wrestling coach. The school was set to launch a program this season, but a number of hurdles prevented that from happening - none of which seem to be public knowledge. Previous coach Caitlyn Baker left her position before the program got rolling.  The Pennsylvania RTC previews its athletes who are set to compete at the Bill Farrell International this weekend at the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan. Flowrestling’s David Bray gets in on the Farrell chatter, previewing the six women’s weights.  It’s National Signing Day across the country. Flowrestling has a Division I signing day to follow all week as the early signing period has commenced.  InterMat features Beat the Streets Chicago wrestler Kaila Del Toro, the first All-American from BTS Chicago.  Bo Nickal’s plans after 2020 are clear - he’s going the MMA route. Bo went on the Luke Thomas Show he plans on bringing an American Top Team gym to State College and train out of there instead of relocating.  The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette highlights the powerhouse program at Pitt-Johnstown and head coach Pat Pecora. The Mountain Cats are loaded with talent from Western Pennsylvania and coach Pecora is 15 victories shy of tying the all-time coaching dual meet record, set by the late Dale Thomas.  More stuff from The Daily Pennsylvanian! This time a feature on Penn head coach Roger Reina. Good stuff from Philly this week.  On The Network Virginia Tech head coach Tony Robie talks about the big signees that came the Hokies way on the Episode 90 of Inside Virginia Tech Wrestling. Robie will also recap the Mat on the Mound dual against Northwestern and look forward to this Sunday’s tilt against Ohio State. I would have posted the #PackM

While it wasn’t full-on crazy this weekend, we certainly had our share of notable upsets, what the heck moments and yes … the Tampa Bay Buccaneers losing yet again. It’s tough being a Bucs fan, but then again, I was a Bucs fan during the creamsicle days, so I know what it’s like to be the only Bucs fan sitting alone at a table, looking at the bottom of an empty glass.Instead, I was proactive. I shunned the Bucs, happy with an atrociously ugly football win by ye olde alma mater on Saturday against some school in Fort Lauderdale that doesn’t have a wrestling program. That makes the meaningless on my college sports landscape. On Sunday, I ventured South to Rochester, Minnesota to check out my first high school wrestling of the season, the InterMat JJ Classic. Yes, you’re right, seemingly every important wrestling event outside of the state championship seems to happen in Rochester. There’s the Minnesota Christmas Tournament, The Clash, sometimes the NJCAA national championships are there. Oh, and Mike Busch State Farm is there. Home. Life. Auto. Mike Busch is your man. His mustache will give Andy Bisek’s a run for its money. No, Mike’s not a sponsor, just a longtime friend. Anytime I can mention Mike in anything wrestling related, it makes me smile.Anyway, as I was saying, I was down for the InterMat JJ Classic, my first gig after basically becoming independent last week. If you want a bit of a rundown about why I decided to focus more on the Mat Talk Podcast Network, read my blog at mattalkonline.com/blog10. I won’t take up too much of your time with nonsense, because Andrew Hipps of InterMat’s using this to feature two of the interviews I did with champions at the JJ Classic, Mark Hall and Fredy Stroker. If you listen carefully, you’ll even hear young Mr. Hall give us his top six college choices as it stands right now. We already know Stroker’s Minnesota Bound, no, not the show Minnesota Bound, which comes on right after the late local news here on Sunday. If you’re a hunter, you’d dig it.And I’ve got to give Andrew Hipps of InterMat a tip of the cap. This is the fifth year he’s run the JJ Classic. It’s not about setting rankings or being a huge mega tournament. Hipps wanted to create a tournament to honor is friend Justin “J.J.” Kukowski, who passed away from brain cancer in 2007. All proceeds from the event went to the Justin Kukowski Center, a cancer support center in the Twin Cities. Great cause. Kudos to everyone who showed up.STROKER INTERVIEW at 8:41HALL INTERVIEW at 11:43Now to the mats:First up, the NYAC’s not know as the NYAC anymore, at least not the tournament as it was renamed the Bill Farrell International in honor of the late, great Bill Farrell. I won’t fill your ears with stories about how Bill was this and that, because I only got to know the man very late in his life. Dan Gable once told a story about his famous quote, “Once you’ve wrestled, everything else in life is easy,” and the hook to that story was he thought he might have stolen it from Bill Farrell! With freestyle on the mats on Sunday, there were some real eye-opening results. At 57kg, Northern Iowa grad Joe Colon of Titan Mercury won gold, beating the NYAC’s Danny Mitcheff 13-6. Mitcheff upended Sam Hazewinkel in the quarters and pinned Andrew Hochstrasser in the semis, while Colon beat the NYAC’s Brandon Precin in the semis and Angel Escobedo of the NYAC in the quarters. Nice day for Joe.At 61kg, foreign wrestlers went 1-2-3 with Titan Mercury’s Kyle Hutter finishing fourth. At 65kg, Jason Chamberlain beat freestyle novice Evan Henderson 8-3 in the finals. Henderson didn’t wrestle in Fargo, but it’s a strong freestyle showing for sure. He’s redshirting this year for North Carolina. Canada’s Haislan Garcia beat Adam Hall 3-1 in the finals at 70.Hey Huskie up for Bloomsburg grad Richard Perry. Never an All-American in college, Perry beat 2012 Olympic silver medalist Jaimie Espinal of Puerto Rico,
