In Episode 172, we learned the difference between IQ (Incorrect questions) such as “Why did he cut me off?”, and QBQ (Questions that are positive and productive) like, “What can I do to help you out ?”  QBQs focus on action. How can I improve myself? How can I provide value to you? Action requires courage; inaction is fueled by fear Action builds confidence; inaction builds doubt Action even when it leads to mistakes leads to growth; inaction leads to stagnation In the Question Behind the Question we discovered the Power of ONE: Departments, teams, committees don't change, People change…one at a time. Asking questions that focus our efforts, thoughts, and energy is the way to be effective and really make a difference. John G. Miller was taught by his wrestling coach, aka his father,  he had 3 people to beat: The opponent Himself-overcome fears The Ref- never blame Please join us as we dive into QBQ: The Question Behind the Question and discover instead of thinking outside the box, it is beneficial to succeed using what is in our box, a Bloom Where You're Planted mentality.  Learning is about change. We always have a choice, even if it is choosing not to make a choice. What can we do to bless your day?

Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will

285 Bloom Where You're Planted   When we are first starting out in our careers it can feel like we're lost and in a rut, constantly fighting the tide as we try to sail the seas of life. However, much like the humble dandelion, it's through this resilience and persistence that we can grow in whatever environment we find ourselves in. In this episode Sarah Elkins and Nathalie Lussier discuss the importance of thriving and trying new things that can bring us joy and fulfillment, even if they are new and strange. Because it is only when we make the attempt that we will learn more about ourselves and the strength within us.   Highlights Sometimes scrapping ideas is the first step in the right direction. Resilience can keep you afloat through all of life's turbulence. Growing and working hard over time on your passions, even if they're new to you.   Quotes “Bloom where you're planted.” “I think it's when people were sharing about it with their friends. The sort of word of mouth effect, because that was like obviously I can like what we created and think it's cool, but if other people aren't seeing the value and aren't sharing it with their friends because they think it's awesome and they need to try it, then I don't know if we created anything great. So for me that was the big thing.” “I feel like sometimes these situations open us up for better things even though it doesn't feel like it in the moment.”   Dear Listeners it is now your turn, I started this question for you about ten or fifteen minutes into the conversation with Nathalie: What can you take on? What can you think about in terms of problem solving where you are now? What is something that you could do, maybe as a side hustle, maybe into the future as you get more experience and build the portfolio of trying it where you are now, being somebody who blooms where they're planted, what problem can you solve? I'll be curious to find out, please comment or send me an email, let me know what you thought of this episode. And, as always, thank you for listening.    About Nathalie Nathalie Lussier is an award-winning entrepreneur who has been making websites since she was 12 years old. She graduated with a degree in Software Engineering and a job offer from Wall Street, but she turned down this job to start her own business right out of college.   As the founder of AccessAlly, the powerful digital course and membership solution for industry leaders, she believes that access to education can help defy stereotypes and make the world a better place while providing a sustainable livelihood for enterprising teachers. Connect with Nathalie on her LinkedIn, and Facebook! Be sure to check out her websites Nathalie Lussier, Accessally, and 30 Days List Building Challenge! About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Today's very special guest is Kim Mousseron, the very first full-time member of the Franceformation team, as she began her permanent role as an International Mobility Consultant on January 2nd. Kim has a Master's from Middlebury College, and a rich and varied professional history of teaching, office and administrative work and most recently, as a housing coordinator and administrator in a study abroad program. She is a longtime member of the American Women's Group of Languedoc Roussillion and FAWCO, the Federation of American Women's Clubs Overseas. She joined me in April 2021 part-time, we finally met in-person this past October at the Bloom Where You're Planted event, and we finally signed her CDI for her new position right before the Christmas break. It has been a pleasure getting to know Kim and working with her, and I am very excited to have her on the team full time going forward. She has wonderful energy, she's a great problem solver, she's also from Massachusetts and appreciates, or at least tolerates, my snark, and most importantly, she speaks fluent French bureaucracy. Study abroad's loss has been the good fortune of me and of our Franceformation clients, and I am thrilled to be able to introduce you to her as our team member.

Women Rising Together

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 1, 2022 25:03

What surroundings inspire you to be the best version of you? Is it a lovely clutter-free home, a very organized closet or desk, a clean car, a beautiful garden? A light room, a dark cozy room, maybe a fireplace? We all thrive under different conditions and we're all inspired by different things, and people. I get so inspired when my house is in order, especially all papers (including my crafting papers), I hate junk mail, and I love having a beautiful lush garden to walk out to in the morning and in the evening. At my house the curtains are never closed, I love a light and airy house! So if you've been feeling uninspired lately, stagnant maybe, feeling a lack, then think about what works for you, what inspires you to soar, what gives you wings? So if money is an issue… Putting money aside, what creates a feeling/experience of ease, comfort, peace, and pleasure for you? And if you're not surrounding yourself with as many of these things as possible, make a shift … that includes being surrounded by the right… people, watching the right movies/shows. Reading the right books, wearing the best clothes possible, that make you feel your best… as has been said, "Dress how you want to be addressed.” Let's pay attention also to our physical surroundings… top to bottom, left to right… each room of your home, your closet /clothes, jewelry. This is of course, keeping in mind HOW we want to be inspired! Pay attention… change things little by little, or all together if you can, but move in the direction of having your surroundings match/support your vision for where you're headed and that support the future you envision. Ever been to someone's house and you couldn't wait to go home so you could make changes in your house or garden?? In last Episode #48, Our Thoughts Create Our Future, I mentioned my dear friend Debbie aka Debbie-Doo, whom I think could be a Home-styling Coach! Her home looks like it came out of a magazine page! This also happens to me when I visit my sister Maria… her garden is so incredible, you feel like you're in the Garden of Eden, and she always sends me home with tons of plants and cuttings. I want to be around people like them, who inspire me in many different ways. Everyone is different and different people will inspire us in different ways, as we also, hopefully, inspire others. We're all unique and meant for absolute greatness… so keeping that in mind, surround yourself with all the things that will inspire you to be all you're meant to be. Today's Episode with Shayna Abraham:Shayna Abraham is the Founder and lead consultant for Prepare to Bloom Consulting, working with families to place clients in academic and therapeutic treatments and settings.Shayna knew she wanted to teach and was planning on being a middle school science teacher. But, as a student, she worked with a consultant to find her right college placement and was inspired to become a consultant herself. As an educational and therapeutic consultant, she addresses the questions: What do the family and child need? Does what they both need exist? As a lead consultant, Shayna will travel with a couple other consultants and go to schools/programs to observe firsthand what the environment is like. This makes sure that what she is recommending to the client will fit their needs.Consulting is very relationship-based, which can be stressful when working with families in crisis. You need to be in a position where you are grounded and can be an anchor for these families. Shayna recommends visiting the programs and getting well versed in what these programs do. This way, you can rely on this knowledge when working with families. It's important to make sure that you are the right fit for your client. In fact, when families come to Shayna for help, she recommends that the families explore other consultants so that they feel confident in choosing the right one.In creating Prepare to Bloom, she had to first find value in herself so that she could set proper boundaries in her business and set rates that she is confident in. Also, learning to be comfortable with having uncomfortable conversations that you'll have to have with families.Books that helped Shayna learn about business include the 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership and The Invisible Leader.Tools that Shayna loves for organization and consulting include Google Calendar, the SRP database, and being in constant communication with her team.Find Shayna and learn more about her work at www.preparetobloom.com and www.therapeuticonsulting.org Shayna's hot seat answers! Apple or Android: AndroidFavorite book: 15 Commitments of Conscious LeadershipFavorite movie: Harry Potter (all of them)Ideal vacation spot: San Sebastian, SpainSelf-care activity of choice: Exercise every morningBest TV Show: Escape to the ChateauBook title written about Shayna's life: Bloom Where You're PlantedIs there something you would like to see on this podcast that you're not seeing? Here we go, episode #26 - “Bloom Where You are Planted” - This quote was mentioned by the guest speaker, Olivia Ryan in this episode. We recorded this earlier in the week, before Thanksgiving and I could not have picked a better time to have this conversation. Because I realize that when I take in, more moments to reflect on what matters most, it becomes a part of what helps us to bloom where we are planted! Also, I am really really really -- thankful for the conversations I have on the podcast! Yes, I do like to talk, but I am so blessed by the guest speakers on the podcast whether it's faith-driven or not --- I am amazed at how each person has a story like no one else -- a message like no one else! Incredible! I find that it often unravels pieces of inspiration that I can respect and take along with me to fuel my life up with, too! That's why I am fired up and excited for you, to meet my new friend, Olivia! Her heart is on fire to tell us all what fuels her up and helps her to help other women, to not shrink back but to lean into the light ---- or onto a yoga mat! And she may have you wanting to try something new, too! So fun! So cozy up with your coffee, listen in with a friend, or grab your yoga mat and turn it up… because you will no doubt be encouraged! SHOW NOTES: On this show…...we are talking about patience & resilience, the concept of Bloom Where You’re Planted. Are you ever exactly where you want to be in your life? It’s ok to be pointed toward the horizon but keeping your focus, hopes, and dreams there means you can’t prosper where you are. Today we are here. Why wait another moment to bloom. It may not be a perfect time but today has been given to you and each one should be preciously handled. There is opportunity all around you, here, and there. Sometimes it takes hearing something over and over and over before it takes root and other times it’s a revelation. I just heard “Bloom Where You’re Planted” last week. BOOM it hit me! Hearing it out of context, you could think it means just be happy with who you are and where you are and don’t strive for better. However, that isn’t where my mind went. I would have pruned those roots right out because I’m all about goal setting, action planning, and personal growth. What I heard is you have an opportunity today and every day. If you put off personal development until you reach your destination then you’ve missed some of the ripest opportunities for growth. Today, you might not be able to change your logistical circumstance but you can change your mindset and find a new way to grow in ways you hadn’t thought of. When things are going perfectly you don’t have to be as creative, patient, or resilient. It’s when you hit a challenging time that it forces you to modify your approach and look for positive alternatives.  Manfred F. R. Kets de Vries helps us understand and deal with disappointment in an article he wrote for Harvard Business Review.  We can’t avoid disappointment so we have to find ways to walk through it, understand it, and learn. I’ve heard it before - “I don’t have any expectations”. Which sounds good and super healthy but doesn’t it sound realistic? What happens when your expectations are for other people? Talk about disappointing. That was one of those ideas that didn’t immediately take root for me. “You can’t change other people.” I guess when I first heard it being a headstrong teenager, I took it as a challenge. A heart-breaking, overwhelmingly frustrating challenge.   I found this article that breaks it down a bit: Expectations are premeditated disappointments: Five ways to maintain a flexible mindset in an uncertain world Put your thoughts and feelings somewhere you can look at them.  Notice your time-traveling mind.  Your mind’s ability to travel in time is amazing. Intentionally take varied perspectives. Establish a “present-moment anchor”. Label expectations as to what they are: hopes and worries. See you’ve always had the power, even when you’ve felt completely helpless. I love a change in perception, it opens up a whole new world of possibilities. So just like my revelation of “Bloom Were You’re Planted”, I find new ways of seeing the same thing when I listen to others.  Mallory Joy gives us 5 Ways to Bloom Where We're Planted in her article for Medium Embrace the challenge. Stop complaining. Focus on others. Celebrate the small things. Visualize the future. Embrace the difficulty, knowing that these experiences make you who you are. There will be beauty from ashes, but it’s just the challenge at the moment to keep that end goal in mind. CHALLENGE: take a moment and notice where you are. Be thankful for the gift of awareness and the power to make the most of every moment. Have patience as you dig in and bloom where you’re planted. Seize the day and shine!   I Know YOU Can Do It!
