Essay #95: Alexandria Hollett, ‘No Gods, No Masters: Practicing Freedom Through Anarchist Civics'

In this essay, Alexandria Hollett describes how liberal and conservative approaches to civic education in the so-called United States dangerously position the nation-state as the incontestable organizer of contemporary life, promote national myths, encourage young people to develop affinity for the nation-state, and position voting and other constitutional processes as exclusive tactics for social change. By contrast, this essay offers direct democracy, mutual aid, and direct action as anarchist interventions into the ongoing crisis of civic education.  Alexandria Hollett is an Assistant Professor of Elementary Education at California State University, Northridge. Alexandria Hollett's most recent publication is ‘No Gods, No Masters: Practicing Freedom through Anarchist Civics' and she is a member of the Black Rose/Rosa Negra Anarchist Federation. In this episode, we talk about Anarchism and freedom, and how the definition of freedom can vary depending on the person. We also delve into the topic of homelessness, and how Los Angeles and Orange County have a huge housing crisis that makes it difficult for anyone to stay housed, Disneyland's stranglehold on the city of Anaheim, and how its workers are still unhoused despite working at their parks, and this country's fascination with trying to make being homeless illegal vs. actually building homes for those in need.We give our final thoughts on Agnes Varda's filmography as we close out on another year of August is for Auteurs month.Carter Moon's Writings:https://merrygoroundmagazine.com/author/carter/Support Me:linktr.ee/FromMyLipsPod

Talkhouse Podcast

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a pair of guests who I can call legends without hesitation: Shirley Manson and John Doe. Doe is a founding member of the insanely influential punk band X, which started life way back in 1977 Los Angeles. They were part of a scene that leaned into hardcore punk, but X set itself apart by sneaking elements of country and Americana into their blistering records and live sets. And the chemistry between Doe and his co-lead singer Exene Cervenka was legendary: In fact, it still is. Though the band has split a few times over the years, they're still actively rocking all these years later, and in fact released a really great record in 2020, called Alphabetland—it was their first in about 20 years. Doe has also been an active solo artist as well, and he's got a great new album coming out May 20, 2022: It's called Fables in a Foreign Land, and it's a concept record whose tales take place in the 1890s. It's dark and folky, and includes some songwriting help from a bunch of amazing folks, including today's other guest, Shirley Manson. Manson of course is the singer and frontperson of Garbage, which she's been a part of steadily since the early 1990s. Garbage was formed by producer Butch Vig—he of Nirvana's Nevermind fame—and was a massive success right out of the gate, with hits like “Queer,” “Stupid Girl,” and “Only Happy When It Rains.” They even did one of the best James Bond themes in recent memory, “The World is Not Enough.” The band has released a steady stream of great records over the years, including last year's No Gods No Masters. A bonus track from that album, “Destroying Angels,” was written with and features both John Doe and Exene Cervenka, and an entirely different version of it also appears on this great new John Doe record. In this chat, Manson grills Doe on his intentions as a songwriter, and he asks her about Garbage's process as well. Manson wants to know whether Doe considers himself a singer or songwriter first, and she refers to Butch Vig more than once in her charming Scottish accent as "Butchie." They also talk about the afterlife, and how playing new music for the people closest to you can be a little deflating. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Shirley Manson and John Doe for chatting. If you like what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcast platform and all social media channels. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time! CORRECTION: May 12, 6:17 PM Shirley claims via Twitter that she never referred to Vig as “Butchie,” and upon further review of the tapes, it seems I was misinterpreting a breath as another syllable. Apologies to Ms. Manson!

In this episode we take a look at how narratives and story telling shape our view of the world. How seeing people as being either good or bad is dangerously oversimplified, especially when we ignore the mechanisms that allow people to do so much harm even with the best of intentions. This episode touches on a few topics that have been discussed in episode 006, but I believe that they are worth revisiting. In this episode of Postcards, I welcome Cadwell Turnbull. author of the science fiction novel The Lesson. His short fiction has appeared in The Verge, Lightspeed, Nightmare, and Asimov's Science Fiction. The short story “Loneliness is in Your Blood” was selected for The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2018, and the story "Jump" was selected for the Year's Best Science Fiction and Fantasy 2019. The Lesson was the recipient of the 2020 Neukom Institute Literary Award in the debut category. In this episode, we are focusing on his second novel No Gods No Monsters that I jokingly called an Anarchist werewolf novel. The first in a series this novel is fantasy, science fiction, and activist themed with multiple layers No Gods No Masters is a delightfully powerful and unique piece of work. I would recommend it for all fans of modern dark fantasy but for the ones that enjoy deeper political reading, it is a MUST READ. In this conversation we talk about Cadwell's origin story, the differences between writing the first book and this one, the influence of Leguin and activism in Pittsburgh where he went to college and writing an anarchist themed monster novel about discrimination and the changing world. It's been a big couple of years for Shirley Manson — not something every artist can say, as a global pandemic stretches into its second year. Nor, is it something many bands can say staring down their third decade of existence. Our call is scheduled early — another rarity in this world. When we connect, the musician explains that's she set to go exploring on a rare off day for Garbage's tour with fellow alternative icon, Alanis Morissette. In June, the band released its well-received seventh LP, No Gods No Masters, which found Manson's lyrics taking no prisoners in a world that too often appears to be coming apart at the seams. Late last month, the singer also kicked off a new season of her critically acclaimed interview podcast, Jump, which features frank conversations with artists like Patti Smith and David Byrne.

Garbage is an American rock band fronted by Scottish vocalist and musician Shirley Manson. The band immediately made waves with their eponymous debut album (released in 1995) and their follow-up 'Version 2.0' (1998) topped the UK charts and earned the band two Grammy nominations. Garbage released their seventh studio album ' No Gods No Masters' in June of 2021 and we spoke with Shirley Manson about the album,  witnessing a people's revolution in Santiago, Chile,  The Men Who Rule The World and equality for women, Uncomfortably Me, why being in a band means so much to her, our tendency towards greed, and a lot more! Interview by: Martin KuiperSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/FaceCulture)

Additionally, her work in Human and Organizational Psychology is focused on behavioral health organizations and identifying impactful methods of improving treatment outcomes for patients in marginalized communities. Christophe Difo and Sean Prophet talk to Ms. Walker about the pitfalls of social media, recovering from Republicanism, functional / rational libertarianism, cognitive biases, self-interest, self-actualization, addiction, treatment and Alcoholics Anonymous. Forces of accelerating change in America are driven both by technology and demographics. Christophe Difo and Sean Prophet discuss yet another incident of police racism, and Trump's backlash against anti-racism training for US Government employees. We also discuss our new computer-generated announcer voice, and the implications of the technological singularity for the future of jobs and our political system. Specifically how automation has been leading the world inexorably for hundreds of years toward redistributionist socialism, and increased economic integration through trade. The term "singularity" as introduced by Ray Kurzweil in his 2005 book, "The Singularity is Near," represents a convergence of trends that is so powerful that it's impossible to predict with any degree of clarity what might lie beyond it. A corollary of the singularity concept is that the faster change accelerates toward a singularity, the greater will be the social resistance to that change. This resistance is at least a partial explanation for the rise of Trumpism. As an example of the kind of stark choices we face as a planet going forward, we focus on the Star Trek Deep Space Nine episode, "Past Tense," parts 1 and 2, in the later part of our conversation. All this leads us to believe that the 2020 election is looking more and more like a political singularity, an event of pivotal importance to our civilization, beyond which we cannot foresee outcomes, with any degree of clarity. Nick discusses a sick white nationalist running for mayor of Toronto for publicity. And ADHD. If you want to easily send a letter questioning Faith Goldy buying air time on Bell Media, here's an easy letter to copy, paste and send to AdvertiseWithUs@bellmedia.ca) Dear Bell Media it's come to my attention that Faith Goldy, a right wing neo-Nazi Toronto mayoral candidate, has purchased a large amount of ads from Bell Media via CP24. Faith Goldy has endorsed by the alt-right neo-Nazis, many are volunteering for her, and she's trying to drag hate into the mainstream. Goldy has said the infamous Fourteen Words on air, a neo-Nazi slogan coined by the neo-Nazi group The Order, which murdered a Jewish radio host. She appeared on a neo-Nazi podcast associated with the Daily Stormer after Charlottesville. She said that the alt-right Charlottesville manifesto, including its position on the JQ (Jewish Question; that Jews don’t count as white people to the alt-right neo-Nazi movement), was well thought out. She's called for Canada to return to being a "96% white, European country". She's already been banned from the fundraising site Patreon and a number of other platforms for spreading hate. This is not someone that I think Bell Media should be endorsing through allowing her to run advertising. I appreciate your consideration.

Garbage are an iconic, eclectic band that is anything but what their name implies. Fronting the outfit is the charismatic and irrepressible Shirley Manson from Edinburgh, Scotland. Manson first met up with her three future bandmates in Wisconsin as a result of one of those strange, classic twists of rock and roll fate involving MTV, a phone call, and a disastrous first audition. In then end, Garbage was formed (even if Manson still isn't such a fan of the name), and with their self-titled debut came the iconic hit "Only Happy When It Rains," a record that feels as fresh today as it did nearly 30 years ago.In fact, as Manson tells it, the misery of that song pours down even more heavily now on audiences as they celebrate and dance to it on the band's current North American tour with Alanis Morissette. (Get tickets to see for yourself via Ticketmaster.)In the latest episode of The Story Behind the Song, Manson joins host Peter Csathy to share all about the misery behind "Only Happy When It Rains," including her initial thoughts upon reading the "nursery rhyme" lyrics. Manson also discusses "The Men Who Rule the World," the lead song on Garbage's No Gods No Masters, a track that perfectly encapsulates Manson's current state of mind and features lyrics that rained down on her in a moment of spontaneous inspiration.Listen to the full episode now, or check out the complete video interview at Consequence.Make sure you like, review, and subscribe to The Story Behind the Song wherever you get your podcasts to catch each episode of the monthly series.
