There were two flashes of white light at my feet, like quick fireworks, and then everything went black.  My brain knew that my right leg was beyond repair.  -Roseann Sdoia Materia April 15, 2013: That's the day the bombs went off at the Boston Marathon finish line.  This is the story of an innocent bystander who lost her right leg when the second bomb went off in front of the Forum Restaurant. Roseann Sdoia Materia's life would be saved that day by three people who stepped into the smoke and mayhem to save her life:  college student Shores Salter, Boston police officer Shana Cottone, and Boston firefighter Mike Matteria risked their lives to help her, and their story is told in Roseann's memoir:  Perfect Strangers:  Friendship, Strength and Recovery After Boston's Worst Day.  Originally released as part of this series in 2018, the interview brings the listener into the events of that day, when brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev unleashed a terror attack using homemade pressure cooker bombs planted near the Boston Marathon finish line, killing three people and injuring 264.  Days later, the brothers would also kill MIT police officer Sean Collier. Treated by trauma surgeon Daniel King, MD at Mass General, Roseann explains how fortunate she was to have a doctor who had experienced treating soldiers wounded by IEDs during his deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.  Beyond the details of what happened on that fateful day, Roseann's story is a profile in courage as she struggled to accept the loss of her leg and a new reality as an amputee.  Says Roseann, “Courage is getting up every day and facing the world. Some days you have it and some days, you don't. “  The founder of robostrong.com, she is an in-demand public speaker, an advocate for amputees everywhere, and a supporter of the many charities that have been born out of the bombings.  The friendships Roseann forged with those who rescued her remain strong. In fact, Roseann married firefighter Mike Materia!  For 23 minutes of strength, courage, community, and the resiliency of the human spirit, just hit that download button.  #bostonmarathonbombings #bostonmarathon #bostonstrong #massgeneralhospital#spauldingrehab

Targeted violence, domestic terrorism and international terrorism are changing. In the past, America has been the victim of large scale coordinated attacks. Today, acts of mass violence are as simple as cars, fireworks and household items. On April 15, 2013 two terrorists blew up homemade bombs at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Three innocent people were killed. Hundreds were injured. Boston Police Chief Daniel Linskey immediately found himself in charge of a mass casualty event and a multijurisdictional manhunt through the streets of Boston. Chief Linskey joined Fran Racioppi to share how he overcame fear, panic and the realization that in an instant the entire city was looking to him for guidance and direction. He shares how preparation and training between law enforcement and first responders in the years leading up to the attack was critical in their response. And he explains why in emergency response, there's no place for egos or credit, just action and results. Join our conversation from the shores of Plymouth Harbor. Heal Our Lands2 Chronicles 7:14 “ If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”I was at an Encounter Alumni event last night, and my friend Theresa was sharing with the group about her new book that she just published on Amazon. His book is called Weapons of Our Warfare. In this book, she identifies thirteen spiritual weapons and how to use them, as well as some amazing results she has seen when these spiritual weapons are employed in the present-day spiritual battle we face. I am excited to read her book and I hope you will get a copy and check it out as well. When Theresa was giving a talk last night, she mentioned 2 Chronicles 7:14, and when she did, I felt the Spirit prompt me to write it down and check it out for today's episode. She received this verse while she was driving around Boston after the Boston Marathon Bombing had taken place. She felt like the Lord told her that if we prayed for 1 hour a day in the Spirit, then the Lord would protect our land from attacks. I know that everyone listening to this podcast does not have the gift of tongues and some may not even want this gift.First, let me just say that I was right there with you at one point. I wanted nothing to do with the gift of tongues. I had heard people in my dad's prayer group who had that gift, and it just sounded weird, and I didn't want to be weird. Then I heard a speaker, Anne Trufant, talking one time, and she said how she felt the same way. She would pray for the Lord to give her all the gifts of the Holy Spirit, but not that one because that was weird. Then she said she was counseling troubled teens, and one of them backed her up against the wall one day with his hand on her throat. She said after he left the room, she prayed to the Lord to give her all He had for her, even the gift of tongues.I would also like just to take a minute to talk about the gift of tongues. When you are speaking in tongues, you are just praying in another language, a language that only God can understand. So, God and God alone will hear and understand whatever you are saying. Unless you are speaking in tongues with a group and someone asks for God to interpret what was said. What I love about praying in tongues is that it is I don't have to know what to pray for. When you are speaking in tongues, the Holy Spirit is praying straight from your heart to God the Father. How many times have you been in a situation where you didn't even know what to pray for or what to say? When you speak in tongues, the Holy Spirit prays a perfect prayer for you.In case you were wondering where this idea of tongues came from and if it is backed by scripture, it is. There are several references to speaking in tongues in the Bible. Romans 8:26-27 says, “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” This explains that we don't know how to pray as we should. However, the Spirit can intercede on our behalf, and the Holy Spirit will intercede for us according to the will of God. The Holy Spirit doesn't just know what we want, it knows what God wants as well and can intercede for us according to that will. How amazing is that? Now that I have explained a bit about the gift of tongues let's get back to the verse. “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” this verse is saying that if we humble ourselves, pray, seek the Lord's face and turn from our wicked ways, then He will hear us and will forgive our sin and heal our land. How badly do our sins and our lands need healing right now? When I think of our lands, I think of our houses, our cities, our states, and our country. Our country especially needs healing. It is so divided and so angry. That is the United States of America, at least. I know not everyone listening is from the United States. What about your country? Does it need healing? What about our cities and states, do they need healing? What about our families, do they need healing? I know mine does. I think the whole world needs more Jesus. We need more love in the world. I am sure you can agree with that. The verse says, “If we humble ourselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from our wicked ways.” Can we do that? Can we turn from our wicked ways? Can we say sorry to the Lord for all we have done? What about humbling ourselves? Can we admit we don't know everything? Can we admit we can't do everything on our own? Only you can answer these questions. I am just pointing them out so that we can stop and answer them. I know a lot of us complain about how bad our country is right now and how we need someone to come in and change it. That is a good thought, and maybe the right president can make a lot of changes. However, whoever the president is, he is still human. This means we are putting a lot of our hope in the right person coming in to fix everything when we could be putting our hope in the Lord to fix everything. The Lord is not limited like humans are. He can do things that we can't even imagine.I often say, “I would do anything…” regarding things I have been praying about for a long time. For instance, I used to say I would do anything to have peace in my house. I would do anything to eliminate all the anger in my home. I would do anything for my kids to feel better. How about you? Have you ever said this? When we look around the United States, we see high grocery prices. College tuition is ridiculously high, along with the interest rates on homes. When we look around, we might be tempted to say, I would do anything to change all this in the U. S. We also had another school shooting yesterday. We probably think we must do all we can to prevent this. This is a normal response. Anyone would want to change this situation. We turn to legislation, we turn to the president, we turn to the states, and who we should be turning to is God.God is telling us in this verse how we can heal our lands. We can pray for all that worries us and all that needs to be changed. We can seek Him. Is He the one we are seeking, or are we seeking answers from the world? It makes a difference. We can be humble and we can turn from our wicked ways. God will forgive not only our sins but he will heal our lands as well.Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening today. Lord, please help us to hear your words and abide by them. Help us to turn to you for answers instead of turning to the world. We love you Lord and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus's holy name. Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. Lisa is joined by Meghan Zipin who talks about her experiences of being in the bombing at the Boston Marathon 10 years ago this year.  Meghan Zipin has a Masters in Physical Therapy from Northeastern University (2006). In 2013, she earned her MBA from Boston College. A survivor of the Boston Marathon bombing. Today, she writes about motherhood, trauma, healing and relationships. First Light, to be published in April 2023, is her first book. Meghan lives on eleven acres in New Hampshire with her husband, three curly-haired boys and their dog, Oona.  April 15th, 2013 is a day that will not only remain memorialized in the hearts and minds of Bostonians, but that of the entire country. We watched in horror as two bombs detonated near the finish line of the iconic Boston Marathon, claiming the lives of 3 innocent victims, and injuring hundreds more. The first successful domestic terror attack since 9/11 culminated with a massive search for the bomber, forcing a lockdown in Boston and neighboring communities. Next month marks the 10th anniversary of the Boston Marathon Bombing.  For marathon runner Meghan Zipin, a survivor of this tragic event, it was a day that shaped the rest of her life. As she approached the finish line, two of her closest friends were there, running alongside her for the final stretch, ready to share in her accomplishment. In a matter of seconds, what should have been a joyous celebration, instead turned into something entirely different. In Meghan's own words, "Those girls were blown up, suffering life threatening injuries. The weight of guilt is insurmountable."  But, from almost every tragedy, inspiration can be drawn.  In the courtroom, as part of her victim impact statement, Meghan told the bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, "I know one day I'll be a better mother and my husband a better father because we will show our children all that is good in this world; all there is to be thankful for." As part of her healing journey, Meghan has authored First Light (April 15, 2023), a collection of poetry that serves as a personal timeline from the time of the bombing to her healing and becoming a parent. This collection is a tribute to the commitment she made in the courtroom and a testament to the idea that we can keep going.

In this episode, host Dr. I. David Daniels will speak with Boston Marathon Bombing Suvusior Manya Chylinski, who has become a speaker and consultant to help organizations utilize “Trauma Sensitive Leadership “ practices. According to the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, 70% of adults in the United States have experienced a traumatic event at some point in their lives, equivalent to 223.4 million people. A traumatic event is defined as an event that threatens a person's physical safety or the safety of another person and leaves the victim feeling intense fear or helplessness. Some examples of traumatic events include: Accidents or injuries Physical violence Sexual violence War-related events The death of a loved one Serious illness of a child Conversations and actions to establish psychological safety in organizations have become more common, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. It is increasingly common to hear organizations say they welcome people to bring their “whole selves” to work. This also means that people's trauma comes with them. Ms. Chylinski has learned through her own process of healing from the trauma of the bombing that many organizations don't recognize the fact that a significant number of the members of these organizations have been traumatized at some point in their lives. Recognizing this trauma and sensitizing the organization is key to a safer, healthier, and more well organization.

Host Michael Azevedo welcomes back journalist Susan Zalkind. Susan joined us back in late 2022 to talk about the Hulu documentary series, "Murders Before the Marathon," which she created, wrote, and co-produced. The springboard for that documentary series was actually a book proposal about a triple murder that took place in Waltham mass on 9/11/11 and that horrific crime's eventual connection to the Boston Marathon bombing in April 2013.    Susan has spent more than a decade investigating the September 2011 murder of Brendan Mess, Raphael Teken, and her friend Erik Weissman in Waltham, Massachusetts and the connection between the officially still-open homicide case and the Boston Marathon bombing.  Her book The Waltham Murders: One Woman's Pursuit to Expose the Truth Behind a Murder and a National Tragedy was published in March 2024. Library Journal hailed the book as “a definitive resource” in a starred review. Publishers Weekly called the book “gripping” and predicted that “readers will be captivated.” A true-crime memoir and the culmination of more than ten years of reporting, The Waltham Murders is an in-depth probe into a dark American underworld by a journalist coming to grips with both personal grief and the collective anguish of a nation in her tireless pursuit of the truth. And as this episode airs, exactly 11 years later, Cari Kenzie is here to discuss her journey since that traumatic event. Is it possible that being at a bombing could be less traumatic than hearing about it in the news? Paul shares a study from the Boston Marathon Bombing and how being present at that tragedy allowed people to help, to flee, and to ultimately identify as a survivor, but hearing about it in the news gave people a stress response that was difficult to resolve. Today, Paul, Ira, and Evan process some recent tragedies together and share why hearing alarming news through media outlets can be dangerous and bad for your mental health. Unfortunately, the financial news media is no exception. I cannot begin to describe the way I felt while listening to Rachel Hansen talk about her experience at the Boston Marathon in 2013. It went from one of the most "beautiful" races of her life into the most tragic, trauma-induced nightmares in a matter of minutes. She found herself stuck in a fight or flight response for years and did everything she could think of to pull herself out of it and to heal with the right counselors, attitude, medicine and of course, Jesus. He was there all along the way. And so was her late Grandmother whispering promptings in her ear as she crossed the finish line. Do not miss this one.

A terrorist attack causes massive property damage, including to an insured business. The adjuster assigned to the claim is sure they've seen something in the policy about terrorism disclosure or terrorism caps, but isn't sure what. In this episode, Tim, Alissha, and Mike will explore the TRIA act which enables coverage for minor terrorism losses, and why it likely does not apply to this scenario.   Notable Timestamps   [ 01: 40 ] - This episode concerns a real-life event, the 2020 Christmas Nashville bombing, in which the individual who set off the bomb died, several others were injured, and many businesses were damaged.   [ 03:15 ] - The “War” exclusion would not apply, as many insurers found out after the attacks on September 11, 2001.   [ 06:17 ] - What is TRIA? The Terrorism Risk Insurance Act made terrorism insurance available to businesses on a voluntary basis, for terrorist attacks certified by the Department of the Treasury.   [ 08:52 ] - Under TRIA, a terrorist attack is dangerous to life, property, or infrastructure; has resulted in damage within the U.S.; was committed as part of an effort to coerce U.S. civilians; results in at least $5M in aggregate damage.   [ 09:45 ] - In the Nashville bombing, the elements of a terrorist attack under TRIA were not met due to the lack of the coercion, amount, and certification elements. Because the TRIA elements are echoed in the policy's terrorism exclusion, this likely means the claim is covered.   [ 13:12 ] - After the Boston Marathon Bombing, many insurers faced the same issues. The event was never certified by the Department of Treasury as a terrorist attack.   [ 14:45 ] - No event has ever been certified in this manner, but terrorism insurance exists and is affordable, so in that sense TRIA has been a success.   [ 15:44 ] - Tim provides a quick recap of the points above.   Your PLRB Resources   Article on Nashville Bombing - https://search.plrb.org/?dn=73725&src=gsa   On-Demand CE Course on Criminal Acts, Terrorism and Liability Claims - https://www.plrb.org/public2/dislearn/description.cfm?mod=p0033)   Overview of TRIA - https://search.plrb.org/?DN=39046   Employees of member companies also have access to a searchable legal database, hundreds of hours of video trainings, building code materials, weather data, and even the ability to have your coverage questions answered by our team of attorneys (https://www.plrb.org/container.cfm?conlink=sec/cq/default.cfm) at no additional charge to you or your company.   Subscribe to this Podcast   Your Podcast App - Please subscribe and rate us on your favorite podcast app   YouTube - Please like and subscribe at @plrb   LinkedIN - Please follow at “Property and Liability Resource Bureau”   Send us your Scenario!   Please reach out to us with your scenario! "It never really crossed my mind to feel limited. It never really crossed my mind to be like, 'What can't I do now?' I always focused on, 'What can I do under different circumstances?' It never crossed my mind to focus on couldn't." If the name Michele Blackburn sounds familiar, that may be because you've heard it mentioned here on the Ali on the Run Show before — just about one year ago, in fact. Last year, Peloton instructor Jess Sims completed the Boston Marathon, running with an invitational entry from, you guessed it: Michele Blackburn. In 2013, Michele was at the Boston Marathon finish line cheering for her best friend and roommate. She was standing in front of Marathon Sports on Boylston Street when the two bombs detonated, and almost lost both legs as a result. Ultimately, her surgical team was able to save her legs and feet, but she has dealt with extensive surgeries (including skin grafting) and complications (including, more recently, lymphedema) since then. For years, Michele avoided the Boston Marathon and the finish line. Last year, she returned to Boylston Street for the first time since 2013, to cheer Jess into the finish. This year, 10 years after that tragic day in Boston, Michele will return again: this time, as a marathoner. In this conversation, Michele talks about her decision to run this year's race, and to do it while raising money for the Milford Regional Healthcare System — the hospital that rehabbed her after dealing with lymphedema as a result of the bombings. Michele lives in Uxbridge, MA, with her husband and their two kids, ages 4 and 6. SPONSORS: Bandit Running: Use code ONTHERUN15 to get 15% off your entire Bandit order.
