**Discussion begins at 4:30**Let's go back to January 28, 2022 – Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe and his girlfriend, Karen Read, had been fighting. They decided to decompress and meet up in a bar in Canton, Massachusetts, knowing that a blizzard was coming and they were likely going to be snowed in for a few days.  Karen met her boyfriend and his buddies at a bar about a mile from John's home, and then they went across the street to meet up with more of his friends.  After last call, the couple was invited to an after party about 2.5 miles away at the home of Boston Police Officer Brian Albert.  Karen didn't enter the house, for reasons we will get to later, but she dropped of John and then drove herself to his home where she allegedly fell asleep on the couch.  When Karen awoke around 5AM, she noted that John had not come home and began searching for him with the help of some friends.  They found him dead in the snow in front of the Albert residence, eventually leading to the arrest of Karen Read.  Prosecutors allege that Karen backed into John with her SUV, and left the scene, causing John O'Keefe to die d/t a basilar skull fracture and hypothermia.  She was charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, motor vehicle homicide, and leaving the scene of a deadly crash. The defense, however, claims that John O'Keefe was likely killed by someone inside the house and that the witnesses, many of whom were affiliated with the Boston Police Department, utilized their resources to cover up the true cause of death and frame Karen Read.  The trial, lasting more than 2 months, and including more than 600 pieces of evidence and 70 witnesses, ended in a mistrial last July. The foreman told the judge "The divergence in our views are not rooted in a lack of understanding or effort but deeply held convictions that each of us carry, ultimately leading to a point where consensus is unattainable," the jury of six men and six women were hung after 4 days of deliberation.  Polling of the jurors revealed that they had all agreed that she was not guilty of murder or leaving the scene but had been confused about how to deliver a partial verdict. This is normally a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you at the heart of mystery. Today is a bonus episode we call a Toe Tag. It is the first chapter from a fresh release in the mystery, crime, and thriller genre.Today's featured release is The Big Lie by Gabriel Valjan. TG Wolff ReviewThe Big Lie is PI mystery. PI Shane Cleary is a popular guy. Everyone wants a favor from him. An MIA standard poodle, Latin tutoring for a mafioso's niece, pro bono work for a grand larceny defense, and a background check as SOP for getting serious. It's going to take the help of friends and enemies to keep all these balls in the air. Bottom line: The Big Lie is for you if you like stories where the pacing keeps up with the PI's fast talking. Strengths of the story. Shane Cleary is juggling four jobs plus keeping off his girlfriend's shit list. It's a lot for anyone. One of the strengths of THE BIG LIE is the skill with which author Gabriel Valjan lets us know exactly where we are at all times. He distinctly draws the characters making it easy for readers to differentiate between the cases. Shane as a character is well developed both with a full back history in Vietnam and with the Boston PD and a more recent history such as with this girlfriend, friends, cat, and answering service. He is a character readers can get behind, working from the moral high ground that lets him make hard and sometimes painful decisions. The story is set in a colorful Boston. It is not set in modern time, but I could not find reference to a year. Based on Shane having (and hating) a beeper, his having been in Viet Nam and worked for Boston PD, and a reference to punter Ray Guy, it seems to be set late 1970s to early 1980s. Shane navigating Boston's segregated Irish, Italian, Black, and Jewish communities adds a layer of complexity to his tasks that ups the stakes and heightens the entertainment. You can add the Boston PD hating Shane to the complications.This is the 5th book in the Shane Cleary Mystery series. I have not read the previous four. This can be read as a stand-alone as the mysteries Shane signs up for do not seem to be carried over from previous books. Character carryover is managed well with backstory snippets that get us what we need to know without dragging down in synopsis. When looking at the logic of the story lines and the role Shane has in resolving them, we have to look individually. Shane outsources the Latin tutoring and the background check, making his role more of a facilitator. The missing dog story had a strong, simple logic. Shane uses his talents with the missing dog case to get people beyond the fear of the dog's owner to be helpful. There was one spot that had me raising an eyebrow but the resolution is good without being predictable.The grand larceny case showed excellent detective skills and definitely would have died without Shane pushing at apparent dead ends. The logic of the criminal action is more complicated here. I ended up with a few questions about the setup, which happened before Shane was involved. The logic of Shane's actions is strong. He does his job, providing the defense with what it needs to combat a lazy if not corrupt PD, then wipes his hands, leaving it to the lawyers to pick up the work of charging the guilty party.Overall, The Big Lie, the 5th in the Shane Cleary Mysteries, was a highly enjoyable, entertaining read. O'Keefe was found lying in the snow in the yard of another Boston PD officer on the morning of Saturday, January 29th, 2022. Two more murders in Boston bring the total to 7. The Strangler continues to elude investigators through the winter and spring of 1963. Then, in June, New York police find the body of sixty-two-year-old Zenovia Clegg in a Times Square hotel. She had been strangled, using a scarf tied in the Strangler’s signature bow. The NYPD quickly catches Clegg’s killer, a drifter from Maine named Charles Terry, and one legendary detective there, Tom Cavanagh, begins to suspect that he has arrested the real Boston Strangler. But the Boston PD doesn't seem to care. Host Portland Helmich traces Cavanagh’s life-long pursuit of evidence supporting his theory, and reveals the surprising details of Charles Terry’s life that seem to confirm his guilt.

From 1962 to 1964, women in Boston lived in fear of the infamous Strangler, who committed 13 known murders — crimes that included vicious sexual assaults and bizarre stagings of the victims’ bodies. After the largest investigation in the city's history, Albert DeSalvo confessed. Despite DeSalvo’s full confession and imprisonment, authorities never put him on trial for the murders. And more than 50 years later, doubts continue to surround the case. Was DeSalvo really the killer? Was there more than one Strangler? I recently had the honor of sitting down with Daniel Linksey, former Superintendent in Chief of the Boston Police Department, to record an episode of the Crisis Intelligence Podcast.
