There is nothing that the power of the resurrection cannot redeem in your life. - Fr. Shawn Monahan   Summary What do we do with the wounds we carry, especially in marriage? In this powerful episode, Fr. Shawn Monahan shares a trauma-informed vision of spirituality that meets us in our real stories. We're all wounded, some more deeply than others, and healing begins with honest self-knowledge, self-acceptance, and inviting Christ into our pain.  Fr. Shawn explains how our desires are shaped for good, how sin is seeking that good in the wrong ways, and why shame keeps us stuck. Christianity isn't behavior management. It's transformation through relationship.  You'll also hear practical wisdom for forgiveness, vulnerability, and praying with your spouse. If you're longing for renewal and lasting peace, this conversation offers real hope. Check out his free workshop, "The Path to Healing Our Broken Hearts."  Link below!   Key Takeaways We need a trauma-informed spirituality. Everyone carries wounds. Some are deeper than others. The Church must recognize this reality and respond with compassion, emotional awareness, and an understanding of how early experiences shape us. Healing begins with self-knowledge and self-acceptance. By becoming aware of our reactions and emotions, we grow in self-understanding. This allows us to accept ourselves and become a true gift to others. Desire is good, but it can be distorted. God gives good spiritual desires, and our human desires are also good. Sin happens when we pursue those good desires in the wrong ways. Shame blocks healing, but Christ redeems wounds. Christianity is about transformation through relationship, not behavior management. Nothing is beyond the power of the Resurrection. Forgiveness and vulnerability are essential in relationships. Forgiveness is a grace-filled choice, not a feeling. Real healing in marriage requires empathy, honest listening, asking "Will you forgive me?", and the courage to be vulnerable.   Couple Discussion Questions When you think about your own wounds, how do they show up in our marriage? Share one area where past hurts or early experiences may affect your reactions, fears, or desires. What helps you feel safe enough to open up about those places? What would forgiveness or vulnerability look like for us right now? Is there anything unspoken between us that needs to be brought into the light? How can we listen with empathy, ask "Will you forgive me?", and invite Jesus into that space together? Resources: FREE virtual workshop with Fr. How long does heartbreak really last and what actually helps you heal? This clip explores heartbreak as a trauma that can take years, the call for real closure, and how unexplained breakups shatter trust and sense of self. I'm exploring with my guest the quieter, tragic view that not all pain becomes growth, even while we may learn boundaries and ask sharper questions. Here, I'm discussing the slow turn toward self-compassion, moving from siding with the rejector to being on your own side, and what recovery realistically looks like. Day 5 of Heart Renewal: Letting Love In Again follows the arc of Nurture—softening the heart with warmth and self-compassion so love feels possible again. In this episode, you'll practice a Heart Chakra (Anahata) meditation using gentle breath and focused attention at the center of the chest to release protective tension and restore emotional openness. You'll learn how relationship stress can show up as shallow breathing and a guarded posture, and how nurturing practices help regulate the nervous system and reduce self-judgment. Leave this meditation feeling calmer, lighter, and more supported—tender, steady, and open to love with wisdom. Featured technique: Heart Chakra focus (breath + heart-centered attention) Best for: emotional heaviness, guardedness, loneliness, self-criticism, feeling closed off Takeaway: Nurture is how the heart reopens—gently, safely, and from within. ABOUT THIS WEEK'S SERIES Welcome to Heart Renewal: Letting Love In Again—a 7-day meditation series designed to help you gently reopen your heart with both tenderness and wisdom. Whether you're seeking a relationship or you're in one and love feels distant, this week will guide you to release what you've been carrying, calm your nervous system, rebuild emotional safety, and create the inner conditions where love can return—without forcing it. Each day follows a simple arc—Release, Safety, Desire, Boundaries, Receiving, Repair, and Choose Again—with breathwork, visualization, and reflective prompts to help you soften protective patterns, trust yourself again, and feel more open to giving and receiving love in real life. This is day 5 of a 7-day meditation series, "Heart Renewal Meditations: Letting Love In Again,"  episodes 3458-3464. THIS WEEK'S CHALLENGE - LOVE IN PRACTICE QUEST: Each day, do one small "letting love in" action— release something heavy, soften your body, express an honest desire, set a gentle boundary, receive without deflecting, make a repair, or choose again. Track it with 7 checkmarks and notice how quickly your heart starts to feel safer, steadier, and more open. THIS WEEK'S MEDITATION JOURNEY  Day 1:  Renewal Visualization Day 2:  Affirmation: "I release what's heavy." Day 3:  Let Go Breath: inhale 4, exhale 8 (or 4/6), do for 8 rounds Day 4:  Apana mudra for purification Day 5:  Fourth chakra for love and gratitude Day 6:  Love Flow meditation, combining the week's techniques Day 7:  Weekly review meditation and closure SHARE YOUR MEDITATION JOURNEY WITH YOUR FELLOW MEDITATORS Let's connect and inspire each other! I don't often do videos like this, but today I need to speak personally. We are requesting prayer. My wife and I have six children. Three of them have congenital heart defects and we are now facing a possible heart transplant far sooner than any of us expected. We are asking for prayer. Prayer that our family would be upheld by God's grace. Prayer that both Martin and Morgan would have strength. Prayer that the Lord will give wisdom to doctors. And prayer that if it be His will, that the Lord would delay a transplant. And if not, that the Lord would be very close to us every step of the way as He has in the past.

What if we don't know what to do with broken hearts the way we know what to do with broken bones? In this episode, Jeanne Foot shares how she helps individuals and families navigate mental health, addiction, and trauma recovery through The Recovery Concierge. Jeanne is the founder of this boutique mental health, addiction, and trauma navigation agency that provides innovative concierge services tailored to unique needs of individuals, families, and the entertainment industry. With a focus on mental health and addiction recovery, her team's holistic approach encompasses assessments, counseling, and continuous support, ensuring a comprehensive pathway to sustainable recovery. Her journey into this work wasn't by choice - it chose her. Growing up in 1960s London with childhood trauma, sexual abuse, and the death of her baby sister, Jeanne fell into substances at a young age as her only tool for emotional regulation. After getting sober and spending seven years frozen in emotional pain, she had an epiphany: no one's coming to save you. She dove into everything from peak performance to trauma healing, creating the proprietary method she uses today with clients. Jeanne reveals two relationships that transformed her: her father, who mentored her in the family insurance business in her early twenties when she didn't want to go to university, teaching her that sales is about guiding people through a process (not coercing them), that you win on price but lose on price, and instilling values of ethics, integrity, kindness, vulnerability, and transparency that shape everything she stands for today and carry through to their third-generation family business; and Dr. Anthony Levitt, Chief of Brain Sciences at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto with over 10,000 employees, a brilliant psychiatrist who gave agency to people who weren't clinically trained, wanting to learn from lived experience rather than taking a top-down approach, asking Jeanne to chair a grassroots pilot program in 2012 that has now served thousands of families and become a leader in the industry both nationally and internationally, and who admitted "we're failing people, we need to do better" when others would hide that they don't know what to do.   [00:04:20] Founder of The Recovery Concierge Boutique mental health, addiction, and trauma navigation agency Matches people to right services and bespoke treatment plans Uses invitational, compassionate, non-stigmatizing approach to intervention Been doing this work 30 years informally, 15 years professionally [00:05:40] Growing Up in 1960s London "Children should be seen and not heard" environment in middle class family Baby sister died when Jeanne was four years old Stepbrother sexually abused her, grew up with tremendous trauma Fell into substances at very young age as only coping mechanism [00:06:40] The Critical Juncture: Seven Years Sober Seven years into sobriety, thought "if this is all my life's gonna be, I don't want any part" Frozen in her body, life picture perfect on outside but empty inside In so much emotional pain despite having everything externally [00:07:20] The Epiphany: No One's Coming to Save You Had an epiphany: "There's no one who's coming to save you. You better figure this out yourself" Dove into everything: peak performance, emotional healing, trauma, addiction, mental health Created proprietary method mixing optimal tools that became foundation for her work [00:08:20] Her Children: The Catalyst for Change Children became more important to her than herself Wanted to do things differently than her family had done Made sacrifices in her early thirties (early 1990s) to choose them [00:09:40] The Volunteer Visit That Changed Everything Looking for place to volunteer, wanted to be of service and reduce suffering Someone pointed her to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto Had no idea what she was doing, just felt she wanted to help [00:10:00] The Town Hall Meeting with Dr. Anthony Levitt Met Dr. Anthony Levitt, Chief of Brain Sciences at Sunnybrook Hospital (10,000+ employees) He was examining why parents were taking children to US for mental health treatment Parents shared their stories, Dr. Levitt said: "We're gonna do something about this right now" [00:10:40] Building the Plane While Flying It Dr. Levitt asked Jeanne to chair the pilot program Lived experience informed program with clinical expertise Did everything: secured philanthropy funding, hired people, visited every stakeholder, defined metrics [00:11:20] He Gave Us Agency Dr. Levitt gave them agency despite being brilliant psychiatrist Felt he could learn from people who had been in trenches and failed by system Jeanne worked across from him 30 hours a week for free because so in love with the work [00:13:00] We Don't Know What to Do with Broken Hearts Know what to do with broken hearts (cardiology) or broken bones Don't know what to do with broken hearts (emotional)—very nuanced, non-prescriptive process Need to meet client where they're at, not use top-down approach [00:14:20] Rapport Is Number One Indicator of Success Rapport is #1 indicator of success, not therapeutic expertise If you don't have rapport with someone, you can't go anywhere Client from 40 years ago still calling because of implicit trust: "I've got my people" [00:16:00] Learning from Her Father First person who changed her life was her father His ethics, sense of humor, values shaped who she became Father was fantastic mentor when she joined family insurance business in 1980s [00:17:00] Sales Is About Guiding People in a Process Father taught her sales is about guiding people, not coercing them Showing them a process: either they want it or they don't He taught her about ethics—have to have benchmark of morality in business [00:19:20] Third Generation of Client Relationships Into third generation with client acquisitions in insurance business Values come from within structure of family and organization Clients saying: "We've been dealing with these people for long time, continue that" Father's lesson: "You win on price, you lose on price" [00:22:40] Dr. Anthony Levitt: Beautiful Humility Gave agency to people who weren't clinically trained, wanted to learn from them Admitted "we're failing people, we need to do better" instead of defending system Such beautiful humility about him wanting to learn [00:23:40] Grassroots Organization Still Going Strong Since 2012 Built organization that's served thousands of families Has funding, clinical research, evidence-based outcomes Leaders not just nationally but internationally with this model of care Dr. Levitt's philosophy: "The government leads by following" [00:25:20] Lives Saved Through Being There Been in situations where had she not been there in right moment, person wouldn't be here today Meets people in their darkest moments, sometimes requires heavy lifting Testimonials from family members: "You literally saved my daughter's life" [00:26:20] Compassionate Persistence Everyone does it in their own timeline, have to respect that Not top-down authoritarian approach—some people need more time "Compassionate persistence": stay with them until they get what they need [00:28:20] Triggers Are Learning Opportunities Closer relationships trigger us most, but triggers can be good thing Learning opportunities to do better, show up differently People we love most can be most challenging, but they're opportunities for beautiful learning [00:28:40] 100% Personal Responsibility Have to take 100% responsibility, each of us—no 50/50 When we take personal responsibility, we put control in our hands We build walls to protect our hearts, but can't let anything good in either Being seen, validated, heard for what we need is important part of healing   KEY QUOTES "We know what to do with broken hearts in cardiology, but we don't know what to do with broken hearts." - Jeanne Foot "Rapport is the number one indicator of success. People think it's therapeutic expertise—it's not. If you don't have rapport with someone, you can't go anywhere." - Jeanne Foot "Triggers can be a good thing. They can be learning opportunities for us to do better, to show up differently. We all have blind spots, and the people we love the most sometimes can be the most challenging in our relationships." - Jeanne Foot CONNECT WITH JEANNE FOOT

Most people think dementia starts with memory loss. But for millions, it actually begins decades earlier: in the blood vessels. Long before someone forgets a name or misses an appointment, the brain is being quietly damaged by high blood pressure, cholesterol imbalance, poor sleep, inflammation, and chronic stress, day after day, year after year. This kind of damage doesn't look dramatic. There's no big stroke, no clear warning sign. It happens slowly and silently, which is why it's so often missed until it's too late. But here's the good news: vascular dementia is one of the most preventable and manageable forms of cognitive decline. When caught early, lifestyle changes and medical interventions can help slow the onset and manage the effects. In this episode, we explore: What vascular dementia and vascular cognitive impairment are, and how they differ from Alzheimer's disease Why most dementia cases involve both vascular damage and neurodegenerative pathology (mixed dementia) How blood vessel damage begins in childhood and accumulates silently for decades The role of high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, sleep disorders, and chronic stress in damaging brain vasculature Why slowed thinking, movement, and processing speed are hallmark signs of vascular cognitive decline The critical importance of the endothelium: the thin lining of blood vessels that controls brain health How lifestyle factors like nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress management protect and repair vascular health Why managing blood pressure early is one of the most powerful interventions for long-term brain health (and why everyone should have a blood pressure monitor at home!) How vascular damage can be slowed, even in midlife Practical steps for prevention across the lifespan, from childhood through older adulthood Our guest for this episode is DR. COLUMBUS BATISTE, a board-certified interventional cardiologist, an incredible science communicator, and author of 'Selfish: A Cardiologist's Guide to Healing a Broken Heart'. Dr. Batiste brings deep expertise on how cardiovascular health shapes brain health, and why protecting the endothelium (the inner lining of blood vessels) is foundational to longevity. His work emphasizes that all roads to longevity are paved by the heart, and what's good for the heart is good for the brain! Midlife Isn't a Breakdown—It's a Breakthrough with Sandra Lena Silverman Episode Description Welcome to Wake UP! with Joni, the podcast where spiritual awakening meets real life—real conversations, real courage, and the invitation to stop performing, start telling the truth, and remember who you are. In this candid, funny, and deeply illuminating episode, Joni sits down with Sandra Lena Silverman—author, speaker, beauty rebel, and host of The Party's Over. Sandra is living proof that midlife isn't a breakdown—it's a breakthrough. Together, they explore what happens when a woman looks in the mirror, tells herself the truth, and chooses reinvention over illusion. From love bombing and narcissistic relationships to beauty standards, Botox, heartbreak, boundaries, and embodied self-worth, this conversation goes where many avoid—but so many women need. Sandra shares her deeply personal journey through a 27-year marriage, emotional manipulation, radical self-reckoning, and ultimately reclaiming her power, her body, and her soul. With humor, honesty, and heart, she reminds us that the party isn't over—it's just getting interesting. In This Episode, You'll Hear About: Why midlife is not an ending, but an initiation Love bombing, gaslighting, and narcissistic relationship dynamics How beauty standards can become a prison—and how to break free External transformation vs. true inner work Rebuilding self-worth after emotional abuse Dating after divorce, red flags, and boundaries that protect your peace Embodiment, self-care, lymphatic health, and strength training as empowerment Why loving yourself changes everything About the Guest Sandra Lena Silverman is an author, speaker, and unapologetic truth-teller redefining what beauty, love, and aging really look like. As the host of The Party's Over, she brings humor and heart to the chaos of midlife reinvention—one laugh, one heartbreak, and one Botox injection at a time. Sandra's journey didn't begin with a microphone—it began with a mirror and a reckoning. In this Simple Tips to Support Yourself episode of A Fresh Story, host Olivia Howell is joined by therapist and Fresh Starts Expert Oona Metz to break down one of the most universal—and misunderstood—experiences of divorce and major life transitions: healing a broken heart. With nearly 30 years of clinical experience and more than 15 years leading divorce support groups for women, Oona brings clear, grounded, therapist-backed insight into what heartbreak actually does to the nervous system, emotions, and sense of identity.Oona shares practical, accessible strategies for divorce recovery and emotional resilience, including why heartbreak often comes in waves, how grief and relief can coexist, and what helps people move forward without rushing the healing process. Listeners will learn simple but powerful tools for emotional regulation, boundary-setting, self-compassion, and rebuilding trust in themselves—especially relevant for those navigating co-parenting, single parenting, or starting over after divorce. These tips are designed to be realistic, repeatable, and supportive during moments when emotions feel overwhelming. The episode also highlights Oona's forthcoming book, Unhitched: The Essential Divorce Guide for Women, which focuses entirely on the emotional journey of divorce—from heartbreak and identity loss to healing and renewal. Whether you're in the early stages of separation or years into post-divorce recovery, this episode offers clear guidance and reassurance: a broken heart doesn't mean you're broken—and with the right support, healing is possible.

“The first Christmas came with gifts meant for broken hearts.” Christmas is often one of the hardest seasons for parents grieving the loss of a child. Today, I reprise a solo episode originally recorded in 2020 during the height of the COVID pandemic which speaks into a time marked by isolation, uncertainty, and compounded grief. Separated from loved ones, surrounded by illness and fear, many bereaved parents were carrying more than ever before. In this episode, I reflect on the Christmas story through the lens of Isaiah 9:6, focusing not on the gifts we exchange, but on the gifts given at the very moment Jesus was born. In this episode, I discuss:The gift of our Wonderful Counselor, when no human words are enoughThe gift of our Mighty God, whose strength carries us in our weaknessThe gift of our Everlasting Father, steady and committed now and foreverThe gift of our Prince of Peace, offering peace with God amid chaos and sorrowThe gift of Immanuel—God with us, near to the brokenhearted and crushed in spiritThrough Scripture, personal reflection, and gentle encouragement, this episode reminds grieving parents that they are not alone—especially when traditions feel altered, expectations feel heavy, and the future feels uncertain.A reminder for this seasonWhen Christmas feels overwhelming… When your heart aches for what used to be… When your child's name goes unspoken… When a new year feels impossible to imagine…God is with us. That is the gift of Immanuel.I would love to hear your thoughts on the show. Click here to send me a message!
