Last year the Canadian Province of British Columbia, launched a landmark three year pilot programme on drug decriminalisation. For a number of years now communities across Canada have been facing their own opioid crisis, as drugs like fentanyl become more easily available. Vancouver in British Columbia, whilst been one of those places always at the forefront of drug policy change, has seen an explosion in overdose deaths due to toxic drugs in recent years. So the city readily adopted the decriminalisation programme as a measure to try and help reduce the death rates. But now just over a year since its implementation, that pilot programme has been scaled back, and it now means that people found with drugs on their person in public places can be arrested again. So, on this week's Inquiry, ‘Can Canada overcome its drug overdose crisis?' Contributors: Dr. Alexander Caudarella, CEO Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction, Ottawa, Canada. After we put together our tribute episode in memory of Former Canadian Prime Minister, Brian Mulroney, that had included a short tribute honoring my Step Father, Larry Bulmer, I thought about the World Heritage site I had visited and Larry talked about in the short segment I used in the show. I figured most people probably know nothing about the Buffalo Jump nor the World Heritage site in Alberta , known as Head Smashed-In Buffalo Jump History Center.  I figured here is a chance to tell that story and a couple of more I learned while traveling across Canada in 1996 with my Step-father and Mother.  It was one of two trips I consider the trips of a lifetime, Western Canada and , our earlier covered, trip to the Florida Keys. While it is impossible to really recreate a vacation from nearly 30 years ago, I thought I would highlight a couple of things we visited that really stood out. In this episode we will take you to the Canadian Province of Alberta, to visit the Head Smashed-In Buffalo Jump History Center, the tiny Mountain mining town of Frank, where one of Canada's most well known disasters took place when a Rockslide consumed the tiny town in 1903, and we will look back at the building of the Canadian Pacific Railroad, the cross country railroad that really brought unity to the nation. My Step-Father grew up around railroads because his father was a Railroad station manager in several towns along the line and because of that Larry  was always "a lover of all things trains". So, I hope you will enjoy this short trip across Canada, the only other country I have grown to love, and consider as sort of a second home. If you would like to learn more about the Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump History Center its website is https://headsmashedin.ca/and if you would like to learn more about the disaster at Frank's Slide its website is here https://frankslide.ca/ Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

Episode 188 – Interview with Sean Robinson, author of “Going Dry”In his book, “Going Dry: My Path to Overcoming Habitual Drinking” – Sean talks about how examples set for him during his childhood led him to believe that he had it all figured out by the time he could legally drink. Residing in the Canadian Province of Ontario, he was legally allowed to purchase and drink alcohol at the age of nineteen.Sean Robinson works in the construction industry and has volunteered with the local fire department since his late teens – he's now thirty-eight years old, so serving others has definitely always been on his heart. In his early days of drinking, he developed a lifestyle and routine around drinking, and that allowed him to feel like he was living up to the standards of expectations he and others in his family had set for him. Those behaviors continued for almost 20 years and that lifestyle was compounded by the pandemic. Two years ago, he found himself in a dark and confusing place, finally reaching the point of knowing something needed to change. But he also soon realized that “change” was going to be much harder than expected. Quoting Sean, “I had a toxic relationship with alcohol”.He was able to work through his own program of changing habits and routines but ultimately his overriding goal was to become a positive example for his children, by changing his attitudes and beliefs about living a positive life. You can purchase his book on all the major outlets, a few are listed here:https://www.amazon.com/Going-Dry-Overcoming-Habitual-Drinking/dp/1778181732 https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/going-dry-sean-robinson/1142120844 Or you can also purchase the book on his personal website:https://seanrobinson.ca You can connect with him via email at: mail@seanrobinson.ca acourageousrecovery.com

With Quebec's flavour ban on nicotine vaping products now in effect, the clock is ticking on what may become a public health disaster for the province. According to a growing body of research on the impact of flavour bans, sales of combustible cigarettes are likely to grow while safer nicotine vaping products crater. Most alarmingly, where sales of flavoured nicotine products are restricted, teens tend to turn to smoking—destroying the very reason for implementing flavour bans in the first place. Joining today to discuss Canada's flavour ban fever is Dr. Michael Pesko, the J. Rhoads Foster Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics at the University of Missouri. He's a co-author of new research examining the effects of flavor restrictions on tobacco product sales. Included are competitions in the rifle .22 caliber and shotgun trap shooting. “Life Long Sports” being recognized on a national level for our youth always is a thumbs up on this outfit. We wish ALL contestants competing as we speak, having traveled near or far, to make the most memorable time while in Gillette, Wyoming!   NEWS Taiwan - Has a new dish that everyone's excited about!! I could see some of our southeastern fans already ahead of the game on this Trending Food Dish. The dish is Frog Ramen, it'll cost you about $8 American money, and is ramen noodles served with a whole frog on the top. The broth, liquid contains scallion onions and clams. Now I do enjoy Frog Legs… and love ramen, however at this point, I'll be passing on this delicacy of a dish for now! iPhone Alert Launched - The Apple iPhone has gained a new feature called the “Screen Distance” alert. This alert will sound if the iPhone is held too close to your face. Apple says, “Increasing the distance the device is viewed from can help children lower their risk of myopia and gives adult users the opportunity to reduce digital eye strain.” Think about it, have you been dealing with symptoms that could be from using your smartphone too close? Apple has also stated, “Screen Distance in Screen Time uses the TrueDepth camera to encourage users to move their device farther away after holding it closer than 12 inches from their face for an extended period of time.”  Deodorant - Yay or Nay when spending time outdoors? Current Biology Journal has published a new study revealing that wearing deodorant reduces the risk of mosquito bites by 56%. Mosquitoes can pick up body odor 350 feet away! Wearing deodorant makes a person less attractive to mosquitoes because they do not like the fragrant smell or a compound found in deodorants called isopropyl tetradecanoate. Beach Umbrellas & SPF Makeup Are Useless Cleveland Clinic released a new study revealing that SPF makeup and umbrellas to shield yourself from the sun is INEFFECTIVE. Researchers studied scores of people… What was discovered was that 78% of individuals using a beach umbrella still ended up with a sunburn. AND that 25% of the study participants who used SPF Makeup were sunburned. Experts state, prior to using SPF Makeup, first apply a good broadspectrum sunscreen to your face then allow time for it to dry before applying and going about your normal make-up routine! BES T be safe and beat not just the aging process but the skin cancer risk especially! https://health.clevelandclinic.org/is-the-sunscreen-in-your-makeup-enough/   How To Hook Fish In The Weeds? Now that summer is hot across the country and beyond, that means the vegeation has become often times our biggest battle us anglers face. This week Pro's Pointers come from Johnnie Candle, Pro Angler and Fishing Guide. Solutions are offered to beat the weeds, hook the walleyes and keep tight lines in order to land the fish.   The Bend Field Staffer: Johnnie Campbell; learn more or book a guided trip visit JohnnieCandle.com Facebook: @JohnnieCandleProfessionalAngler As we fish deeper depths, the North Dakota Game & Fish is encouraging anglers to consider when landing walleye and other deeper species to keep those fish versus returning to the water (catch & release). Because the temperature difference is so great from the deeper levels past 25 feet, bringing these fish to the surface lowers their chance of survival greatly if released back into the water. Building long-term markets for your feeder cattle with Allied Feeding Partners is being highlighted this week on the Ranch It Up Radio Show! Cint Berry with Allied Feeding Partners, Allied Genetic Resources, and Superior Livestock gives us all the details. Join Jeff 'Tigger' Erhardt, the Boss Lady Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC', and our crew as we bring you the latest in markets, and western entertainment.  Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 141 DETAILS Let's Ranch it Up! Weaning time will be on us before we know it.  And so many are wondering, will these higher cattle market prices remain until sale day?  The time to put a marketing plan into place is NOW!  So we need to ask ourselves, “Are my bull purchasing or buying decisions paying dividends?” “Do I have the information that puts my feeder cattle at the forefront of buyers and continue to demand attention?”  This is where Allied Feeding Partners may come in and help.  Set yourself up for success now and in the future!  As always Tigger & BEC and the Ranch It Up crew dive into the latest agriculture news, rodeo action to not miss, and cover the cattle markets. ALLIED FEEDING PARTNERS Allied Feeding Partners (AFP) was formed by some of the nation's top seedstock producers who trust in the value of feeder cattle sired by their genetics & are dedicated to customer service after the sale. The primary goals of AFP are to build stronger, long-term relationships with bull customers, ensure competition on sale day when customers are marketing their calves, and capture & share feedlot/harvest data with our customers to make better bull selection decisions & to utilize in future years when marketing their calves. Data past the ranch of origin is typically missing for most cattlemen, but AFP provides our customers with the chance to leverage that data for their long-term benefit.  Make no mistake...AFP plans to make money feeding cattle, this is not a charity. But our primary objective is to enhance the relationship between our commercial bull customers & our seedstock partners. By sharing critical performance, health & carcass data through harvest, customers of AFP have the insight to streamline their genetic selection decisions & the ability to build a stronger reputation with potential buyers of their cattle by providing them with past results. This philosophy works in all forms of marketing but is most evident when marketed with our Rep Team on Superior Livestock Auction.   In general, when buyers purchase feeder cattle that perform well, they are not incentivized to share that data with the seller for fear of increasing the price of the cattle in future years. But AFP's goals are to assist our bull customers in their own profitability, with the trust of that dedication being rewarded with long-term relationships between our seedstock suppliers & our customers.  To learn more, contact Clint Berry (417) 844-1009 or your Allied seedstock provider.    COW COUNTRY NEWS The National High School Finals Rodeo is happening as we speak in Gillette, Wyoming!  It is the world's largest rodeo and features more than 1,700 contestants from 44 states, 5 Canadian Provinces, Australia, Mexico, and New Zealand! It is county fair season!  Many miles are put on the trucks and trailers heading up and down the road hauling the juniors and their show steers and show heifers.  But exhibitors beware, heat stress in cattle can ruin it all.  We have updates and what to watch for. The latest USDA Crop Report will surprise you!  Compared with last year, planted acreage was expected to be up or unchanged in 43 of the 48 estimated states. Some of Kunichika's works can be found, here.    Onoe Kikugorō V as The British Spencer (1894)   War prints & Japanese Imperialism - as Japan entered the Pacific Theatre of war (1941-1945) with the United States, the fascist military government had complete power in Japan at the time, and used woodblock prints, as well as other mediums such as lithography and photography, to propagandize their war effort. Printmakers such as Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) even got involved in producing prints that helped the war effort. He designed several war prints during this time period. Prints such as The Red Setting Sun, is a prime example of how the times and aesthetic show a relatively innocuous scene of figures (Japanese soldiers) riding on horses with a setting sun back drop. For more detailed information regarding war time prints I suggest, Conflicts of Interest: Art and War in Modern Japan, ed. Philip K. Hu w/ Rhiannon Paget, and The Politics of Painting by Asato Ikeda. He had been a soldier in world war 2, having been stationed in Japan. After his time in the war Statler moved back to Japan, where he wrote about Japanese prints. His interests were of many facets of Japanese culture such as acoomodation, and the 88 Temple Pilgrammage of Shikoku. Oliver Statler, in my opinion, wrote one of the most important books on the sōsaku-hanga movement, “Modern Japanese Prints: An Art Reborn.”   John Stevenson -  is an American author who has written extenisvely on Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892).    Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (月岡 芳年) was a mokuhanga designer who is famous for his prints depicting violence and gore. His work is powerful, colourful, and one of the last vibrant moments of the ukiyo-e genre of woodblock prints. There was also an excellent catalogue printed for this show and would add to any woodblock print fan's library. more info, here. The book I reference about Toyohara Kunichika is "Time Present and Time Past of a Forgotten Master: Toyohara Kunichika 1835-1900"  There are various online print collections that the aspiring mokuhanga scholar can seek out to help in their studies. The Library of Congress has their collection online, as does ukiyo-e.org, who have various impressions af their prints throughout their website.  Scholten Japanese Art - is a mokuhanga focused art gallery located in midtown Manhattan. It was founded by René Scholten, an avid collector of the Japanese print. More info can be found, here. Acadia Books - is a vintage and unique used bookstore located at Sherbourne and Queent St. East in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In my opinion it is one of the best bookstores I have had the priviledge to visit. Episode 139 – Interview with Sean Robinson, author of “Going Dry”In his book, “Going Dry: My Path to Overcoming Habitual Drinking” – Sean talks about how examples set for him during his childhood led him to believe that he had it all figured out by the time he could legally drink.

These four hundred square miles of freshwater also has the distinction of being home for an elusive lake monster referred to as America's Loch Ness Monster with hundreds of documented sightings. It is said to be between six and twenty-five feet long with exceptionally smooth skin, a humpback, and no scales. It is not like any fish but seems to be a long-lost dinosaur that escaped extinction. The Deadly Secret We Must Share! - Professor Tim Stockwell

Tribe Sober - inspiring an alcohol free life!

Play Episode Listen Later May 7, 2022 49:19

My guest this week is a Senior Scientist with the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research at the University of Victoria in Canada.  Professor Tim Stockwell is a man with a mission – to inform people about the link between alcohol and cancer.  He has been working tirelessly towards this goal for years and has made himself very unpopular with the liquor industry in the process!   The fact that alcohol is one of the top three causes of preventable cancer is not exactly a secret – but it may as well be as so few people seem to be aware of it.  Even moderate amounts of alcohol can cause cancer and there is no safe amount. In this Episode We discussed the role of government when it comes to informing their citizens about the health risks of alcohol and agreed that governments should have some responsibility to inform and educate. Tim explained that the Canadian govt had done a good job during Covid EXCEPT when it came to alcohol policy – they actually deemed it an “essential item” and expanded its availability and even reduced the price in some areas. Here in South Africa our government went the opposite way and enforced several alcohol bans. These bans were implemented to clear the hospitals of alcohol related trauma patients so that Covid patients could be treated – and it worked!  The alcohol ban in South Africa was like a massive social experiment, demonstrating the massive harm that alcohol does, both to individuals and to society. I wrote an article listing the mind blowing statistics from this unprecedented period in South African history – called What If Alcohol was Banned  Tim explained that alcohol consumption in Canada is the highest its been for 20 years and that they are catching up with the UK and Europe. Canada has an alcohol deficit of $3.7 billion a year – this means that its costs the government $3.7 billion MORE (in healthcare costs etc) than it brings in from taxes. It's been known for at least 35 years that alcohol was a number one carcinogen and we agreed that producers should be telling their consumers about the risks – so that at least we are making an informed choice when we drink. Scotland has successfully introduced minimum pricing (although the liquor industry fought it for 6 years!) and modelling demonstrates that this policy reduces hospitalisation and deaths. The official figures of alcohol related deaths throughout the world is R3M a year but Tim believes that these figures are more like 5 or 6M. The official figures dampened down by the outdated view that “moderate drinking” is good for our health.  Tim maintains that the misinformation that moderate drinking can be good for you has been responsible for millions of deaths worldwide. We agreed the irony of the fact that alcohol kills far more people than Covid did – during Covid the whole world closed down yet nothing changes regarding alcohol… We wondered what impact it would have if we saw daily graphs on tv showing us deaths and hospitalisations from alcohol like we did for Covid! Although it's a “hard sell” there ARE effective strategies that could be implemented regarding alcohol policy explained Tim – pricing and availability being two of them. Also focus groups have expressed the view that the absence of warning labels on alcohol conveys a powerful message that its ok.. Tim was featured in a Canadian documentary recently – in this documentary an oncologist was explaining that be bought a fishing rod which was covered in warning labels yet a carcinogenic liquid has none! We heard about a fascinating experiment in a Canadian Province where warning labels were introduced – quite striking labels with cancer warnings and the low risk guidelines. This experiment proved labelling worked as it reduced consumption by 7%! However it was halted when the liquor industry brought a legal action calling the labels “defamatory” (!) We discussed the futility of being told to “Drink Responsibly” and agreed that this was just the liquor industry putting the blame on the consumer rather than being transparent about the dangers of consuming their product. In spite of the struggles Tim does feel that there is hope – he feels that there is a “tide” of change and that alcohol may finally be having its “cigarette moment” We talked about citizens “rights” and of course people must have the right to drink alcohol but they also have the right to be informed of the dangers – just like we are with cigarettes… It took Scotland 6 years to get minimum pricing implemented but now other countries are introducing that policy. Following an audition in Nashville, Jimmy was contacted by the Statler Brothers and performed his first show with them on January 28, 1982, in Savannah, Georgia. Due to the debilitating effects of Crohn's Disease, Lew was unable to return to the stage with the Statlers, and Jimny was hired as a permanent replacement in August of 1982.Fortune quickly lived up to his name. He wrote the group's second No. 1 hit, “Elizabeth,” on their 1983 album Today, and followed that with two more No. 1 hits–“My Only Love” (from 1984's Atlanta Blue) and “Too Much On My Heart” (from 1985's Pardners in Rhyme). Fortune also wrote the top-10 hit “Forever” from 1986's Four for the Show and co-wrote the top-10 hit “More Than a Name on the Wall” from 1988's The Greatest Hits.Jimmy has performed in all of the U.S. States, in Canadian Provinces, and in front of audiences as large as 100,000. He was part of the Statlers' annual Happy Birthday USA celebration in Staunton, Virginia, for 14 years. He also sang on many of the Statlers' gold, platinum, and double platinum recordings. Jimmy's career included The Nashville Network's popular “The Statler Brothers Show” which aired for seven seasons and debuted in 1991 as the highest rated show for the network. Jimmy was privileged to perform at the White House on two occasions, once for President Ronald Reagan, and once for President George H. W. Bush. He also presented a special gift to actress Elizabeth Taylor by singing his song “Elizabeth” to her for a birthday celebration.Jimmy and The Statler Brothers were inducted into the GMA (Gospel Music Association) Hall of Fame on October 29, 2007, and inducted into the CMA (Country Music Association) Hall of Fame on June 29, 2008. Jimmy, as a solo artist, was inducted into the Virginia Musical Hall of Fame in 2018.After The Statler Brothers retired on October 26, 2002, Jimmy seized the opportunity to launch a solo career to share new music with his fans.  His first solo CD, When One Door Closes, was released in August 2003 on Audium/Koch. He released a gospel album, I Believe, in June 2005, a Christmas CD, Feels Like Christmas, in 2006, a live concert DVD in 2007 a country CD, “Windows” in 2009, “Lessons” in 2012, and “Hits and Hymns” CD and DVD through Gaither Music Group in 2015 which debuted at #10 Billboard Country Album, #1 Southern Gospel, and #6 Billboard Contemporary Christian. On this inspiring episode, Dr. Jennifer Young Pierce talks with Dr. Phillip Fields, professor of anatomy at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. In 2007, Dr. Fields was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and told to give up his passion - running. Refusing to let leukemia dictate his life, he has run more than 100 marathons, including one in every state and Canadian Province, since 2009. Hear how Dr. Fields' love of running keeps him ahead of cancer. Plus, he shares his cancer and running journey in his book "The Long Road Back To Boston: Marathon Running with Leukemia." Get Dr. Fields' Book >>> “The Long Road Back to Boston” is available here. All royalties from the sale of this book go to pediatric oncology. Key Takeaways - Keep or find a passion that help you through your treatment and the hard times. - Consult with your physician and cancer treatment team to see what exercise, hobbies and passions are OK with your cancer care and treatment plan. - A cancer diagnosis is not the end of life, it's a beginning. - Don't attempt the cancer journey by yourself. - Be knowledgeable about your cancer. Dr. Fields Said: We're all going to die, so we may as well die doing what we love. As long as you have a goal, you've got something to look forward to. Once you reach that goal, you want to establish another goal. Mentorship has been a chance to share my story and get the word out to cancer patients that diagnosis is not the end of life; it's the beginning. Don't attempt the cancer journey by yourself. Always have somebody you can turn to that will share experiences with you. Be knowledgeable about the cancer. You constantly feel the fatigue associated with the leukemia. Because of the effects of chemotherapy, my marathon times got slower and slower. But I can't imagine not being able to run. I'm about six states shy of running marathons in all the states a second time. ////// Never Miss an EpisodePlease subscribe to The Cancering Show Want us to deliver The Cancering Show to your email inbox?
