The CBS investigation concludes that the Baby2Baby diaper contract was officially classified by California as non-competitively bid, despite public statements suggesting otherwise. El pasado jueves por la noche Donald Trump interrumpió (o, al menos, trató de interrumpir) el prime time televisivo para dirigirse al país desde la Sala Este de la Casa Blanca. No quería hablar de la guerra en el golfo Pérsico ni sobre una posible salida de la OTAN, sino de las leyes electorales estadounidenses, a las que considera una farsa tercermundista. Los presidentes pueden pedir espacio a las tres grandes cadenas de televisión, pero éstas solo se lo conceden cuando el asunto es de extrema gravedad e interés nacional. Se lo dieron a Kennedy en la crisis de los misiles en 1962, a Nixon para anunciar su dimisión en 1974 o a Bush la noche del 11 de septiembre de 2001. Esta vez la ABC, la CBS y la NBC decidieron no interrumpir su programación, igual que hicieron con Obama en 2014 y con Biden en 2022, por tratarse de un discurso político. Trump dijo que son unos "cobardes" e insinuó que se les debería revocar la licencia. Fox y algunas cadenas locales lo emitieron en directo. Lo llamativo aquí es que Trump no hablaba desde la derrota, sino desde la victoria electoral que obtuvo hace poco más de año y medio. Aun así reabrió la herida de las elecciones de 2020, cuando perdió frente a Biden por casi 5 puntos, 74 votos electorales y más de 7 millones de votos populares. Gavin Newsom, el gobernador de California, resumió el discurso como "los desvaríos de un rey loco”. El anuncio era la desclasificación de unos documentos del FBI que supuestamente probaban la injerencia china en esas elecciones. El problema es que los papeles decían mucho menos de lo prometido. Uno de los memorandos reconocía la capacidad de comprometer ciertas infraestructuras, pero añadía que los sistemas de recuento serían difíciles de manipular a gran escala porque no están conectados a internet y las auditorías lo terminarían descubriendo. Una evaluación realizada en 2021 no encontró indicios de fraude, pero para Trump el fraude fue algo seguro. Con idea de apuntalarlo remitió a un documento en el que se hablaba de la forma en la que el régimen chavista adultera las elecciones. Pero Estados Unidos no es Venezuela y, además, las últimas elecciones las ganó él con autoridad. Insistió también el el presunto fraude de votantes que no son ciudadanos, pero por más que se ha investigado este tema apenas se han encontrado votantes registrados que no tienen la nacionalidad. El destinatario real era el Congreso y el objetivo la SAVE America Act, una nueva ley que exigiría prueba documental de ciudadanía para inscribirse en el censo, algo que sería complicado y farragoso para millones de estadounidenses. Hay más de 20 millones de ciudadanos que carecen de un justificante de su nacionalidad fácil de obtener. Trump reclama además restringir el voto por correo, algo que castigaría también a votantes republicanos de las zonas rurales. El hecho es que la ley no tiene votos suficientes en el Congreso. El Senado la ha rechazado cinco veces, el republicano Thom Tillis, favorable a que se apruebe, advirtió que no habría tiempo material de aplicarla antes de noviembre y que a Trump le estaban engañando. El riesgo radica en que decir a los votantes republicanos que el sistema está trucado les desmoviliza como ya ocurrió en Georgia en enero de 2021, donde el partido perdió 2 escaños decisivos. La ironía final es que uno de los documentos desclasificados advertía explícitamente del peligro de sembrar la desconfianza entre el electorado. Eso mismo es lo que ha terminado haciendo el mismo presidente. Nadie, ni los chinos, ni los rusos, ni los venezolanos han corroído tanto la fe en el sistema electoral estadounidense como los 25 minutos del discurso del jueves.
