Hear about travel to Central Portugal as the Amateur Traveler talks to Stephanie Lambert from eurotravelsbydesign.com about this too often overlooked region. Why should you go to Central Portugal? Stephanie says, "It's safe, it's beautiful, it's a culturally rich history. I feel like it's been underrated for some years. It's getting more popular now, but it's been overshadowed by Spain for a while, and I think, it deserves just as much love. It has gorgeous architecture, Fascinating history, breathtaking landscapes, warm and inviting people. I think the pastéis de nata are a reason to go, enough on their own. They're so delicious." Based on Stephanie's detailed and passionate recount of her family's journey through Central Portugal, here's a suggested itinerary to explore this enchanting region, drawing from the highlights and personal experiences she shared: Day 1-4: Coimbra Day 1: Explore Coimbra Start with a visit to the University of Coimbra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its Baroque library and the unique presence of bats that protect the books. Don't miss the São Miguel Chapel within the university, adorned with blue and white tiles and gold leaf. Spend some time at the Botanical Gardens for a peaceful retreat. ... https://amateurtraveler.com/travel-to-central-portugal/
MERLIN Podcast: Bringing Europe’s freshwaters back to life
In this episode we explore the issues around stream restoration in the Sorraia catchment in Central Portugal. Restoration of the Sorraia river needs to be able to navigate the needs of intensive agriculture in a landscape increasingly affected by the climate crisis. Walking along the banks of the river, we meet a range of freshwater scientists, activists, farmers and policy experts to understand the big issues in the Sorraia catchment, and the ways in which restoration is increasingly making space for this river in the landscape. We also hear about how work on the Sorraia relates to wider debates over farming, freshwater restoration and the proposed EU Nature Restoration Law.

#FeelGoodFriday #Portugal #PortugueseTaxesHappiness and wellbeing for mind, body AND bank balance this morning as we welcome Coach Turner and big Phil Cooklin back to the GMP! screen. Also joining us, Loek from Tytle.ioHow does Tytle help me with my tax filings?Filing taxes in one country can be a hassle; if more countries are involved, it often becomes a headache. Tytle makes this process as easy as it gets: you answer some questions, we take care of the rest. If you have an international profile, we first look at your "tax residence". In other words: what is the primary country in which you have to file? Then we'll ask some questions about your income, your expenses, and your assets. Based on your answers, we assign your case to the right tax advisor(s) in our network. Once you approve the price and the draft return(s), you're done. It's as easy as that.We can assist with any personal tax needs, whether simple or complex. If your case is difficult, you might have to answer a few follow-up questions. But we'll make sure the filings get done, seamlessly and without effort. #TroubleShootTuesdaysPortugalOur special guests on this Tuesday's #TroubleShootTuesday show are Marcus Laurence and Bill Mauro, who are enjoying a new life in the mountains of Central Portugal. That said, they recently experienced a medical emergency that tested the Portuguese health service and their trust in it. Find out LIVE on Tuesday's show what happened, and how - thankfully - everything turned out OK, but not without a few hair-raising moments and challenges.About Bill and Marcus: A married couple from the USA (PA), they retired early at 55 and 48, and moved to Portugal in October, 2019, where they lived in Lisbon for a couple of years. Post-pandemic, they wanted to move the countryside and chose the area around Coimbra, where they wanted to maintain access to services and conveniences."Previously, we had private insurance that we used in Lisbon and public healthcare is more accessible where we live now, " they say. "Marcus had used emergency services previously for an injury. Bill had used emergency services for kidney stones."Their recent experience, however, was much more serious..."Marcus had shortness of breath during exercise and had a bad cough earlier, but otherwise felt fine," Bill told us. "Saturday morning, we went to our local 'Centro de Saúde' to have the cough looked at.""The doctor on duty was not our regular doctor and did not speak much English. He listened to my heart and told me I needed an EKG (ECG) that day. So he sent me to CHUC (Coimbra Hospital)," adds Marcus. It's here that events took a serious turn, with Marcus admitted to the emergency room with a rapid heart rate and eventually admitted to the cardiac unit after his heart rate could not be slowed down.Twelve days in the cardiac unit followed.Press play to find out more, including Bill and Marcus's personal experience of cultural differences, the language barrier, hospital food, visiting rights and standard of facilities."Doctors here have a less consultative approach and medications were given without explanation," says Marcus, who joins us on the show with Bill to reveal all. Sergio moved to Burnie from Northern Queensland several years ago where he works as a child psychologist. He grew up in a remote village in Central Portugal, and describes a style of traditional village living which is increasingly disappearing as young people leave for opportunities in the bigger cities. So listening to his stories of village life as a boy will take you back in time a bit, but also give you an insight into some of Portuguese rural life and traditions.

This week I'm chatting to Carissa Tanton, an illustrator from North Wales currently living off grid in Central Portugal. Carissa began with ambitions to be a doctor, then a psychologist and then after a life changing time living in Paris, became an illustrator despite having been labeled ‘terrible at art' at school. Her linear monochrome work is minimalist and precise, often featuring flowers, the sea and pop stars drinking tea. Please join me in our conversation where we touch upon working in wholefood shops, mindfulness and the con that is the British housing market. Talking with Omar and Andrea, a South African/Venezuelan couple currently based in Central Portugal, who ran a small tour company in the UK since 2011 - until they experienced a 'pandemic plot-twist'. After realising they wanted to live in the countryside, and that the UK had become too expensive for them, they decided to try Portugal! They have now bought a 3,400m2 farm and started to renovate it. They don’t have any other source of income but wanted to show how it is possible to relocate, get your dream home, and with a lot of work, get to have the lifestyle you want in the Portuguese countryside.Join us for a fun, inspiring and enlightening conversation...---Carl 'Your man in Portugal' Munson is available for one-to-one consultations as part of Expats Portugal's Ask Our Expats team - https://expatsportugal.com/ask-our-expats-portugal/ABOUT EXPATS PORTUGALWe are an online community-driven website and forum offering help and advice to the English speakers already living in Portugal or planning to move here. ***Covid19 in Portugal - Update: 10:00, Sunday 15th March 2020***At the time of writing, there are 169 confirmed cases of Coronavirus in Portugal, with 1 recovered case, no deaths, and 1,704 suspected cases. This compares to a global picture of 157,292 confirmed cases, 5,844 deaths and 75,941 recoveries.New directives include all bars now closing by 21:00, by order of the government, and with immediate effect, until at least 9th April.Lidl stores will start to close at 7pm in an effort to limit public access and "minimize the risk of contagion".The 'state of alert' stands throughout the country, putting civil protection resources and security forces and services on standby with the intention that that the upward curve of the epidemic can be stopped as much as possible.A key message is that if we do not change behaviour, health professionals and the health service (SNS) will not be able to cope.Prime Minister, António Costa, has warned that the coronavirus is “the struggle for our own survival”. He said we should “assume that this pandemic on the European continent, and, particularly in Portugal, has not yet reached its peak”.“On the contrary, it is evolving so that it is very likely that in the coming weeks more patients will be infected, perhaps with more serious consequences for their health and for their own life and that this may be more lasting than initially estimated,” he admitted, according to The Portugal News.Costa said must “hope for the best”, but everyone must “be prepared for the worst”.“The biggest responsibility of each one of us is to take care of the other”, he appealed, insisting on the need to respect the rules of hygiene and limit the "maximum level of circulation and social contact".---From my perspective here in Central Portugal (the town of Curia in the Aveiro District) the atmosphere has certainly changed with serious impact on supermarket stocks. Though people are still visiting and moving around the town, there are special arrangements in smaller shops, limiting customer flow and personal distance. Staff are wearing masks in the local pharmacy and customers are asked to stand in line, well-spaced, and behind a line. That said, the atmosphere remains buoyant and positive, the older locals shake their heads in disbelief, whilst chatting with humour, going about their lives practically and positively. The sun is shining, the air fresh, thankfully. ---A positive 'viral' story to share is the #viralkindness postcard, as pictured, the idea of Becky Wass in Falmouth, UK, who "wanted to do something to help, but without making things worse.”Perhaps a Portuguese translation would be great for expats who'd like to reach out to their local community? Any help gratefully received.Boa Sorte, Saude...Carl Munson
I had an enquiry recently about funding for a start-up in Central Portugal, which has prompted this new feature on the Good Morning Portugal show - 'The Cockerel's Coop' (Portuguese for Dragons' Den).Come share your business idea on the show with me and the livestream audience, raise awareness, and maybe even funding if you are looking for investors?Email me if you are up for it - carl@carlmunson.com
EVER WANTED TO 'GET AWAY FROM IT ALL'? PRESENTING: YOUR 'CABIN IN THE WOODS'!We've all been there, haven't we? Had enough of the rat-race? Got sick of too much month and not enough money? Thought that there must be more to life than the treadmill of making-ends-meet? And even been inspired by the likes of Thoreau, with his invocation of life beyond mere living:“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life..."I know I have. In fact, that urge would not be silenced, and powered me onward for ten years, eventually taking a chance on the life I now love and live in Portugal. That said, it seems I'm a bit of a lightweight. Although the middle of nowhere was where I thought I was headed here, we've settled in a small town, not a rural hide-away.Those fab folks at Pure Portugal recently helped me realise just how domesticated and urban I've become. This beauty of a property and plot - Roots Farm - nearly had me dusting down my loin-cloth and whittling knife, with its stunning, remote location, off-grid credentials and abundant food production. Can you picture yourself here? Maybe its like an away from it all spot-the-ball, where you put an 'X' where you can see yourself harvesting fresh fruit and veg, sipping some freshly squeezed juice (with juicer powered by solar, of course), or just soaking up a few rays in remote tranquility. For €75,000 (yep, €75,000!), you can live near overhead-free with just a local, property tax of €28.00 a year. This off-grid gem generates its own power and has its own water source. The 5x5m wooden cabin is insulated, double glazed and has a large log-burner/oven combo plus a large veranda looking out over amazing valley views. Adjoining are a workshop and bathroom, and above are twelve solar panels.Nearby are extensive ruins and the current owner has 'EarthShip Academy' plans drawn up that have been submitted to the local council - the intention being to have a totally legal and completely self-sufficient homestead. There's an outdoor kitchen space, composting toilets and outside showers, as well as a borehole. Fruit and nut trees can be found in the just-under-a-hectare of land, set over three terraces, thought to have once been a cherry farm. Here, you're 30 mins from the progressive town of Fundão and 45 mins from Castelo Branco and Spain! The place even has it's own website and social media pages because plans were in place for its use as a retreat centre.Yes, it's a dream property with much of the dreaming already converted into reality, as you'll see in: 'Roots Farm - The Movie'! - https://youtu.be/McyqL5mPqNAAll enquiries: https://www.pureportugal.co.uk/property/fct75-roots-farmAnd contact me - carl@carlmunson.com - if you need help on the ground over here.
Here's a sound I don't hear every day! Birds, Wild Boar? What's with the klaxon and hollering?!

We’re back for Season Five with lots of fun stuff to tell you! First -- tune in for a BIG announcement about our next Great Love Getaway in Puerto Vallarta, and then head to our vacation page to find out how to join us on the trip. This week’s show is a story-filled recap of everything we learned on our anniversary trip to Morocco, Spain + Portugal in September. Adventure lovers will learn from our silly mistakes and seasoned travelers will laugh at all the ridiculous blunders... A must-listen for anyone who missed our insta-stories and is dying to hear (or willing to tolerate) the full rundown. Meanwhile -- we’re so excited to be back for another season and thank you so much to our generous Great Love Gang who is making this show possible! Find out how to get involved on the support page of our site and don’t forget to come hang out on twitter and instagram while you listen! QUICK BITES: Check out the highlights of our Summer Travel Series for the full itinerary and all of our BEST adventure tips. If Tomorrow Gerard has a problem, then Tomorrow Jessie has a problem too. (Unfortunately, Today Gerard likes to save money without thinking of the consequences and that can sometimes cause a lot of problems for both of them.) Jessie’s new favorite travel sleeping contraption is called a trtl pillow and the irony of that name is not lost on either one of us. The Peppers packed for two whole weeks in just two tiny carry-ons! Proof that when you pair a stylist with an actuary, they can combine their packing powers for the good of suitcases everywhere. Our trip to The Blue City of Chefchaouen got cancelled after a rough night on the overnight train. Jessie’s refuses to rest her head on any questionable surfaces so she MacGuyvered herself a sleeping situation using some extra flat sheets and her trusty leather backpack. Who doesn’t love sleeping on a mattress that reminds you of a greasy-spoon diner booth?! (Jessie doesn’t. In case that isn’t clear from the episode or the sarcasm of this question.) If you ever find yourself on the coast of Central Portugal, please go try the buttered cheese and pesto from Azenhas do Mar. If you ever find yourself eating too much buttered cheese at Azenhas do Mar, we recommend chasing it with a digestive enzyme and a couple of charcoal pills. Despite any rumors you may have heard, Jessie has NOT switched over to Team Nap. Gerard hates to leave a country with their local currency, so Jessie has gotten quite good at spending it out to the very last dirham. Lessons From Our Anniversary Adventure: Sometimes it’s ok to pay a little extra money to fly direct. We could all probably stand to do a lot less laundry in our lives Switzerland is really expensive. Never force your wife to ride on an overnight train in Morocco. It’s always ok to change your plans in the middle of the trip. Sometimes it’s worth it to go with the flow and change your plans at the last minute. Never ever (4x) travel without antibacterial wipes. The world isn’t going to end if you occasionally indulge in really good bread while on vacation. Check the weather before you go on special excursions, and be flexible on dates in order to make it work. The world would be a better place if everyone anchored their days around a siesta. Always change your money to the local currency if you want to get the best exchange rate. Getting outside your typical routine is a great way to experience special moments with your partner. TRIGGER QUESTIONS: Which is worse? Being stuck in a small airplane seat for a short amount of time OR having extra leg room in a big seat for a really long flight with lots of layovers? What is your all time favorite food indulgence that you reserve especially for travel or other special occasions. Where is the best spot in your neighborhood to take a blanket and a bottle of wine for date night?

Dear All, Thanks for listening. I have recorded this class so I can offer you a really mellow, supported practice which will help to open your shoulders, heart area and your hips. We use some props like an extra rolled mat (or blanket will do nicely) for under the spine, a bolster (or cushion), and of course it's always good to have a blanket and an eye pillow too. I'm in Spain now, teaching on a Yoga on a Shoestring holiday but I can still post some pics so if you get confused at all with any of the poses then please give me a shout on communityyogabristol@gmail.com to let me know and I'll take a picture and post it for you on the Yoga Community Podcast Facebook page. This is a relaxed class with some standing poses to strengthen - we do triangle pose and palm tree pose to get you up and moving and get the energy flowing. There are spaces on Yoga by Nature's next yoga retreat in Portugal 11th/12th - 19th Sept- it's going to be fabulous doing yoga in the beauty of Central Portugal's lush mountains. We will be staying in luxury teepee accommodation and doing yoga on the yoga platform under the oak trees or in the yoga yurt at the bottom of the garden next to the river. Join us for £500: http://www.bristolcommunityyoga.co.uk/event/one-week-yoga-retreat-gravito-portugal-11th-19th-sept-2015 Find out more about me, Morven Hamilton, at www.bristolcommunityyoga.co.uk

Hi! thanks for tuning in. This class is Level 2-3. If you are new to yoga, look for a Level 1 as this class will be too in-depth. We do poses to release the psoas and also some funky shoulder stretches. Some of the poses require a photo accompaniment and you can find support with images on the Facebook Group here. We flow a bit, go upside down a bit and generally explore in a strong and a subtle way how to create space through the poas muscle and find greater ease through the lower torso. We do Virabhadrasana 1 on only one side so if you are fine with that you will love it and if the thought of it feels like it will mess up your whole day then give it a try anyway! Have a block and a belt handy for shoulder stretches and pincha mayurasana. If you're not up to doing forearm stand yet then take a dolphin pose instead. I am now taking bookings for Yoga by Nature's next yoga retreat Sept 11th - 19th at Gravito, Central Portugal. From £500 come and enjoy twice-daily yoga, river swimming, late summer sun, meditation, singing and nightly music jams at this gorgeous eco retreat centre in the lush mountains of Portugal. Read more here. Find out more about classes and workshops (next up Yoga and the Naked Voice on May 17th) on my website: www.bristolcommunityyoga.co.uk or get in touch with me at communityyogabristol@gmail.com. Lots of love to you Morven xx
