Synopsis One of the most popular works of 20th-century orchestral music, “The Planets” by Gustav Holst, had its first performance on today's date in 1918. This was at a private concert at Queen's Hall, London, under the baton of Adrian Boult, who later became one of the most famous interpreters of this work. The first public performance of excerpts from “The Planets” took place in February of 1919, after which it quickly became Holst's best-known composition. The great success of “The Planets” actually dismayed Holst, who feared it would create a demand for more orchestral works in the same vein, and Holst always liked to do something new and different. He never considered “The Planets” anywhere near his best work, but posterity disagrees. Holst's seven-movement orchestral suite is based on the symbolic astrological associations of the planets. Only seven planets are represented because Pluto had yet to be discovered when the music was written. This omission has recently been rectified by a contemporary English composer, Colin Matthews. At the request of conductor Kent Nagano, Matthews composed a “Pluto” movement, which had its premiere performance in England in May of the year 2000. Matthew's new piece has also been recorded, as you might expect, as an occasional eighth planetary appendix to new recordings of Holst's original seven. Herbie adams is a brilliant entertainer. We met back in the 1990's in Devon, I was 22 and just turned pro 25 years ago so we have known each other on and off over a quarter of a century. We may see each other once every 5 years but when we do we have a nice catch up, its natural and todays is only different in the fact that I recorded it.Herbie is unique, he's fresh and funny and has that powerful persona on stage, the likable factor, that audiences warm too. So getting to know him that bit more today surprised me with his past. I had no idea of his history of being in bands and supporting groups like Supergrass. Synopsis Today's date marks the birthday in 1885 of María Joaquina de la Portilla Torres, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. Under her married name of Maria Grever, she became the first female Mexican composer to achieve international fame. She composed her first song at age four, studied in France with Claude Debussy among others, and at 18, one of her songs sold 3 million copies. At age 22, she married Leo A. Grever, an American oil company executive, moved to New York City, and by the 1930s was composing for Paramount and 20th Century Fox films. Her best-known song is probably "What A Difference A Day Makes" (originally "Cuando vuelva a tu lado"), written in 1934. Her songs have been recorded by singers ranging from the Andrews Sisters and Frank Sinatra to Dinah Washington and Aretha Franklin to Plácido Domingo and Juan Diego Flórez. “I am interested in Jazz and Modern Rhythms,” said Grever, “but above all, in Mexican Music … There is such a cultural richness in Mexican Music, its Hispanic and indigenous origins ... It is my wish and yearning to present these native rhythms and tunes from a real perspective, but with the necessary flexibility to appeal to a universal audience." Synopsis Primitive man probably imitated animal sounds for both practical and religious reasons. More recently, the Baroque-era composer Heinrich Franz von Biber imitated one particular animal for COMIC effect in his “Sonata Representing Animals,” and, in early 20th century slang, it’s simply “the cat’s meow.” Now speaking of cats, they’re supposed to have nine lives–but would you believe 8,949? On today’s date in 1981, “Cats,” a musical by the British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber opened at the New London Theatre in that city’s fashionable West End. Despite a bomb threat and brief evacuation of the theatre, the premiere of “Cats” was a great success. 8,949 performances later, on the same date in 2002, when the show finally closed, it had long since entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest-running musical to date. In London, it took in 136 million British pounds in ticket sales. Worldwide, “Cats” has taken in billions of dollars, has been seen by millions, and has been performed in 11 different languages in over 26 countries. And if you asked YOUR cat to comment on all this, he or she would probably say, “Why are you surprised?” and saunter away. Synopsis Primitive man probably imitated animal sounds for both practical and religious reasons. More recently, the Baroque-era composer Heinrich Franz von Biber imitated one particular animal for COMIC effect in his “Sonata Representing Animals,” and, in early 20th century slang, it’s simply “the cat’s meow.” Now speaking of cats, they’re supposed to have nine lives–but would you believe 8,949? On today’s date in 1981, “Cats,” a musical by the British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber opened at the New London Theatre in that city’s fashionable West End. Despite a bomb threat and brief evacuation of the theatre, the premiere of “Cats” was a great success. 8,949 performances later, on the same date in 2002, when the show finally closed, it had long since entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest-running musical to date. In London, it took in 136 million British pounds in ticket sales. Worldwide, “Cats” has taken in billions of dollars, has been seen by millions, and has been performed in 11 different languages in over 26 countries. And if you asked YOUR cat to comment on all this, he or she would probably say, “Why are you surprised?” and saunter away. In recognition of her outstanding achievement and excellence in music, she won the 2018 Avery Fisher Prize and was awarded a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship in 2008, joining prominent scientists, writers and musicians who have made unique contributions to contemporary life. Highlights of Josefowicz's 2019/20 season include opening the London Symphony Orchestra's season with Sir Simon Rattle and returning to San Francisco Symphony with the incoming Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen to perform his Violin Concerto. Alongside pianist John Novacek, with whom she has enjoyed a close collaboration since 1985, Josefowicz has performed recitals at world-renowned venues such as New York's Zankel Hall, Washington DC's Kennedy Center and London's Wigmore Hall, as well as in Reykjavik, Chicago, San Francisco and Santa Barbara. This season, they appear together at Washington DC's Library of Congress, New York's Park Avenue Armory and Amherst College. In this episode I present a 3-way conversation between English composers Colin Matthews, Julian Anderson and myself.Colin Matthews was born in London in 1946. He studied with Arnold Whittall and Nicholas Maw; in the 1970s he was assistant to Benjamin Britten, and worked for many years with Imogen Holst. His collaboration with Deryck Cooke on the performing version of Mahler's Tenth Symphony lasted from 1963 until its publication in 1975. Over four decades his music has ranged from solo piano music through five string quartets and many ensemble and orchestral works. He was Associate Composer with the London Symphony Orchestra between 1992 and 1999, and Composer-in-Association with the Hallé from 2001-10, now their Composer Emeritus. Colin Matthews' music is published by Faber Music. Julian Anderson is one of the most talented composers of his generation. Born in London in 1967, he studied with John Lambert, Alexander Goehr and Tristan Murail and first came to prominence when his orchestral Diptych (1990) won the RPS Composition Prize in 1992.  Anderson has held Composer in Residence positions with the City of Birmingham Symphony, Cleveland and London Philharmonic orchestras, relationships which produced an impressive body of orchestral works including Stations of the Sun (1998, a BBC Proms Commission) and Eden (2005, Cheltenham Festival). Fantasias (2009), written for the Cleveland Orchestra, won a British Composer Award and The Discovery of Heaven (2011), a co-commission by the New York Philharmonic and the London Philharmonic Orchestra was awarded a South Bank Sky Arts Award. Both works were recorded by the LPO live label. Anderson has enjoyed commissions from bodies including the BCMG, London Sinfonietta, Asko-Schönberg Ensemble and Cheltenham Festival. Book of Hours for ensemble and electronics (2004) won the 2006 RPS Award for Large Scale Composition and featured on a NMC portrait disc. This was one of two recordings of his music to be nominated for a 2007 Gramophone Award, the other being the eventual winner, Alhambra Fantasy (Ondine).  Poetry Nearing Silence (1997), originally a commission from the Nash Ensemble, was later arranged to become a successful ballet choreographed by Mark Baldwin. In 2009, Anderson and Baldwin collaborated again on a Darwin-inspired ballet, The Comedy of Change, which toured nationally. Further engagements include concerts with Los Angeles Philharmonic, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Cleveland and Philadelphia orchestras, where she will be working with conductors at the highest level, including Susanna Mälkki, Matthias Pintscher and John Adams.   A favourite of living composers, Josefowicz has premiered many concertos, including those by Colin Matthews, Steven Mackey and Esa-Pekka Salonen, all written specially for her. This season, she will perform the UK premiere of Helen Grime's Violin Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Dalia Stasevska. Other recent premieres include John Adams'Scheherazade.2 (Dramatic Symphony for Violin and Orchestra) in 2015 with the New York Philharmonic and Alan Gilbert, and Luca Francesconi's Duende – The Dark Notes in 2014 with Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Susanna Mälkki. Josefowicz enjoyed a close working relationship with the late Oliver Knussen, performing various concerti, including his violin concerto, together over 30 times. Alongside pianist John Novacek, with whom she has enjoyed a close collaboration since 1985, Josefowicz has performed recitals at world-renowned venues such as New York's Zankel Hall, Washington DC's Kennedy Center and London's Wigmore Hall, as well as in Reykjavik, Chicago, San Francisco and Santa Barbara. This season, they appear together at Washington DC's Library of Congress, New York's Park Avenue Armory and Amherst College. She will also join Thomas Adès in recital to perform the world premiere of his new violin and piano work at Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris and the Japanese premiere at the Tokyo Opera City Cultural Foundation. Recent highlights include engagements with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Washington's National Symphony Orchestra, Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and Boston and Finnish Radio symphony orchestras. In summer 2019, Josefowicz took part in a special collaboration between Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Royal Ballet, and Company Wayne McGregor featuring the music of composer-conductor Thomas Adès. Josefowicz has released several recordings, notably for Deutsche Grammophon, Philips/Universal and Warner Classics and was featured on Touch Press's acclaimed iPadapp, The Orchestra. Her latest recording, released in 2019, features Bernd Alois Zimmermann's Violin Concerto with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted byHannu Lintu. Hur är det att vara släkt med en stor tonsättare? Alan, Benjamin Brittens brorson är idag i 70-årsåldern. Som liten vistades han på 40-talet ofta hemma hos sin farbror Benjamin i Aldeburgh. I del 2 om Britten berättar Alan om den tid då Brittens ”Peter Grimes” kom till. Vi går på upptäcksfärd i "Brittenland" och hör om de sista åren i Brittens liv. Premiären av operan ”Peter Grimes” 1945 gör den då 32-årige Benjamin Britten till det engelska musiklivets självklara mittpunkt. Han hade länge varit den engelska musikens unga hopp, lika beundrad som avundsjukt påpassad av kritikerna. ”Peter Grimes” etablerade Britten som en tonsättare av internationell rang och attraktionskraft. Trots att han skrev suverän musik i de flesta genrer kom han att se sig själv framförallt som operatonsättare, och sökte konsekvent ämnen där han kunde få utlopp för sitt sociala patos. Grovt förenklat kan man säga att alla hans operor i någon mening handlar om utanförskap. Britten stod själv som homosexuell, pacifist och politiskt vänster utanför det engelska etablissemanget. Men Britten var en paradoxernas man och med tiden blev han själv en accepterad del av det etablissemang som han som ung vänt sig mot. Själv talade han, kanske ironiskt, om att han hade kunnat vara hovkompositör om det inte varit för just hans pacifism och homosexualitet. Om Brittens liv och verk från hemkomsten till England i början av 40-talet efter några år av självvald exil i USA, till den sista sjukdomsmärkta tiden handlar den andra delen av ”Benjamin Britten – ett fjärde B”. Förutom brorsonen Alan Britten möter vi även tonsättaren Colin Matthews som var Brittens assistent under de sista åren av hans liv och sångerskan Dame Janet Baker. Följ med till Brittenland, Aldeburgh i Suffolk, orten invid den stormande Nordsjön som Britten älskade och som betydde så mycket för hans verk.  I Johan Korssells dokumentär möter vi en rad röster om Britten, däribland sångare som Dame Janet Baker och Ian Bostridge, tonsättaren Colin Matthews, Brittens brorson Alan och många fler. ”När man hör Benjamin Brittens musik – om man verkligen lyssnar på den så blir man medveten om något väldigt mörkt, det är som kugghjul som nöter mot varandra utan att riktigt gripa tag i varandra och det skapar stor smärta” så uttryckte sig Leonard Bernstein (som gav den amerikanska premiären av Peter Grimes) om Brittens musik. Och Britten var ett komplicerat geni, långt ifrån självskriven i rollen som brittisk nationaltonsättare, ändå var det faktiskt som en sådan som han framstod när han gick bort vid 63 års ålder. Men på det sätt som hans talanger samverkade var han, trots allt, den totale musikern, lika begåvad som pianist och dirigent som tonsättare. Idag är Britten den tredje mest spelade av 1900-talets operakonstnärerer, efter Puccini och Richard Strauss. Han ligger på första plats om man räknar med operor skrivna av kompositörer födda under 1900-talet. Många av de mest framträdande rollerna i operorna och därtill en rad fenomenala sång-cykler skrev Britten direkt för sin livspartner, tenoren Peter Pears. Brittens kärleksbrev till Pears är för övrigt bland de vackraste som skrivits, vilket också får sägas om verk som Les illuminations, Serenaden och Nocturnen. I första delen möter vi världens idag ledande Britten-röst, Ian Bostridge som håller Britten för att vara 1900-talets främste vokale tonsättaren inom den klassiska musiken.    Psst, det var Brittens stolta mor som förutspådde honom att bli det fjärde B:et i tonsättarkanon efter giganterna Bach, Beethoven och Brahms.
