SynopsisIn recounting the life story of many composers, it's a familiar and perhaps romantic cliché that their work will be — as a matter of course — not appreciated by their contemporaries, and that the composer in question will have to toil for years in obscurity before his or her music is appreciated by performers and audiences. In reality, we're happy to report, that isn't always the case.Consider, for example, American composer Lowell Liebermann, who was born in New York on today's date in 1961. When he was 16, his Piano Sonata No. 1 premiered at Carnegie Hall, resulting in a number of prizes and awards. By his 30s, Liebermann was being commissioned and championed by some of the leading performers of our time. For James Galway, Liebermann composed a flute concerto, and Liebermann's two-act opera The Picture of Dorian Gray was the first work the Monte Carlo Opera commissioned from an American composer. In 1998, Liebermann was appointed composer-in-residence with the Dallas Symphony, and that orchestra premiered his Symphony No. 2 in February 2000, and, in a symbolic millennium gesture, simulcast their performance on the new-fangled worldwide web.Music Played in Today's ProgramLowell Liebermann (b. 1961) Flute Concerto; James Galway, flute; London Mozart Players; Lowell Liebermann, cond. It's not easy to quickly summarize the professional life of Jeff's guest, Emily Duncan. She double majored at the University of Iowa where she completed studies in the acclaimed Undergraduate Creative Writing Program while also earning a bachelor's degree in music. Next came Juilliard and a Master of Music degree. Her musical performances since then are extensive and varied, including recent gigs at Lincoln Center and the Met Gala.  Based in New York City, Emily often can be found performing contemporary works of living composers. She also has credits as a sound designer, engineer, music supervisor, consultant, theatrical artist, off-Broadway musical producer, podcast producer, web app creator, and more. Oh, and she taught Jeff's daughter how to play flute. Maybe the best way to summarize Emily is to say that she lives a highly creative life.  You can learn more and connect with Emily at https://www.rebelflute.com/. What You Need to Know  (03:27) While in college, Emily realized that she could write and be involved in theatre without an advanced degree, but the type of music she wanted to make required at least a master's degree. That's how she ended up at Juilliard in NYC. (04:55) Emily's specialty is contemporary classical music, but she also loves pop music, musical theater, jazz, etc. Different types of music require very different ways of playing or “extended techniques.” (08:55) Playing flute with Lizzo and other talented flutists at the 2023 Met Gala was a dream-come-true experience for Emily. James Galway, the greatest living classical flute player, was there also performing live for the first time in three years. (11:33) In 2022, Emily created the web app, GigCrunch, to help freelance musicians take control of their finances by learning if they are being paid fairly. Check out the free prototype at https://gigcrunch.app/ (18:25) Emily encourages anyone who has not seen a drumline show to go online and type in “drumline” or look for videos of The Ohio State Marching Band. Enjoy the musical arrangements and the arrangements of their bodies on the field. It's a technical sport. About Bellomo & Associates Jeffrey R. Synopsis Today's date marks the birthday in 1885 of María Joaquina de la Portilla Torres, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. Under her married name of Maria Grever, she became the first female Mexican composer to achieve international fame. She composed her first song at age four, studied in France with Claude Debussy among others, and at 18, one of her songs sold 3 million copies. At age 22, she married Leo A. Grever, an American oil company executive, moved to New York City, and by the 1930s was composing for Paramount and 20th Century Fox films. Her best-known song is probably "What A Difference A Day Makes" (originally "Cuando vuelva a tu lado"), written in 1934. Her songs have been recorded by singers ranging from the Andrews Sisters and Frank Sinatra to Dinah Washington and Aretha Franklin to Plácido Domingo and Juan Diego Flórez. “I am interested in Jazz and Modern Rhythms,” said Grever, “but above all, in Mexican Music … There is such a cultural richness in Mexican Music, its Hispanic and indigenous origins ... "The importance of building up rather than knocking down in teaching!" This week on 'Talking Flutes', Clare speaks with the wonderful teacher, performer and founder and conductor of the 'Flutes Unlimited' flute choir and host of the 'Flutes du Soleil' summer flute course held in France Andrea Kuypers. During the podcast Andrea speaks about how she learnt from her own experiences of 'negative' teaching methods (knocking down to build back up) when she herself was a music college to focus her own students only on the positive aspects of learning and developing their own unique styles and musicality.  They also speak about the wonderful 'no pressure' summer flute course held each year in France called 'Flues du Soleil' . Andrea is a freelance performer. She has performed and recorded with all the major Scottish Orchestras and has been fortunate enough to work with such renowned soloists as Mel Torme, George Shearing, Jack Jones, James Galway, Nichola Benedetti and The Priests. This week, dear listeners, we come once again to our yearly celebration of all things Celtic. Though the time has passed when Celtic music was trending, it's a tradition that continues to evolve. Ireland has boomed and bust, and through it all the beauty and spirit of Celtic music has continued to charm audiences around the world, with its brilliant dances and heartfelt airs and ballads. In the poetic imagination of the Celtic bards and troubadours, travel metaphors are as common as thoughts of home. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we take another journey across those green and rocky lands, on a program called THE CELTIC ROAD. Music is by DAVY SPILLANE, MOYA BRENNAN, LISA LYNN & ARYEH FRANKFURTER, LOREENA McKENNITT, AINE MINOGUE, DAVID ARKENSTONE, BRAGH ADAIR, and JAMES GALWAY & PHIL COULTER. When you want to know, where to go, what to do, to be seen, to make a difference, you come here, to iIrish: the Truth & the Pulse of the Irish   Hello Everyone! Welcome back to iIrish; Songs, Stories & Shenanigans. It appears we’ve avoided another shutdown, for another week or who knows.   And Now we have reached the Ask me Anything Segment of our Show. Questions we’ve received via email, FB & Twitter …   Just for a minute, we’re going to move From the Present to the Past, and then roll forward: Let’s take a look at On This Day in Irish History: 7 December 1979 - Charles J. Haughey defeated George Colley to become leader of Fianna Fail (fee-AN-ə FOYL); he was elected Taoiseach on 11 December. 8 December 1939 - James Galway, the ‘man with the golden flute,” was born in north Belfast, the son of a shipyard worker. 13 December 1955 - Grace Gifford Plunkett, an Irish artist and cartoonist who was active in the Republican movement, and an Irish patriot, died. After the Rising, Grace’s brother-in-law Thomas MacDonagh was shot with PH Pearse and Thomas Clarke by firing squad. That day, Grace heard that her fiancée, Joseph Plunkett, was to be shot at dawn for his part in the Easter Rising. Easter Sunday was to have been their wedding day. So, she bought a ring in a jeweler’s shop in Dublin city centre and, with the help of a priest, Fr Eugene McCarthy, persuaded the military authorities to allow them to marry. Grace and Joseph were married just before midnight on May 3rd in the chapel of Kilmainham Gaol, just hours before his execution. After the wedding vows, Grace was then taken to a church friend’s, and then at 2am, was brought back to Kilmainham. She saw Joseph for ten timed minutes, with at least 1 solider present at all times, and was escorted out of the cell, and the jail.   O Grace just hold me in your arms And let this moment linger They’ll take me out at dawn, And I will die With all my love I place this wedding ring upon your finger There won’t be time to share our love, For we must say goodbye Grace, the song, was written in 1985 by Frank and Seán O'Meara. Grace later spent 3 months in Kilmainham herself, arrested in 1923 as an anti-treaty advocate for her role in the Civil War that followed after Michael Collins signed the peace treaty with England See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The latest episode of the podcast which asks: would you go to see Panties at Canning Town Bridge House?Unbelievably, Pop-Crazed Youngsters, this appears to be only the second time we’ve chanced across 1978 – which is a shameful way for a podcast about Top Of The Pops to act, because this year is rammed with cultural behemoths dominating the landscape, with the musk of all the things that Chart Music cherishes hanging thick in the air. We're right on on the perineum ‘twixt Saturday Night Fever and Grease, Tony Blackburn has just slid into his Tony Manero outfit, and your panel are a) becoming massively disillusioned by school dinners, b) fancying Carol Chell, and c) drawing a picture of Hitler in a Mexico strip and getting ready to ice down his groin with some peas a week from now.Musicwise, practically everything good – and bad – about ’78 is here. The Real Thing help Legs & Co recreate one of the scenes in The Stud that didn’t involve grubby pre-Eighventies Percy Filth. Jimmy Pursey says hello to Mum again. Yvonne Elliman and Tavares keep the SNF end up. Legs & Co – on their second shift – look as if they’ve been caught short or have had a serious wardrobe malfunction. Debbie Harry’s face splits like a spaceship door. Heatwave take jumper technology to the next level. ITV Quisling Cilla has a go at Disco. James Galway makes his first appearance since being run over by a motorbike in Switzerland. Ian Dury becomes the nation’s favourite Hard Bastard Uncle. The Scotland World Cup Squad have to sing around a disembodied cardboard cut-out of Rod Stewart. And the UK’s seventh biggest-selling single ever is Number One.Team ATVLand – Taylor Parkes and Neil Kulkarni – help Al Needham fill out the wallchart of late May 1978, veering off on such tangents as the thought of Dave Bartram giving Joan Collins one in a lift, a forensic examination of the 1978 Eurovision Song Contest, urban myths about Melody Maker editors being whipped by chains, an inter-Journo fight over who liked Dexys Midnight Runners more, and – finally – the recasting of Prisoner: Cell Block H that the Pop-Crazed Youngsters have been crying out for. This concert is going to be really special, one for the history books. Where and When: VENUE THEATRE, RATOATH on Thursday, 1ST, Friday, 2ND AND Saturday, 3RD OCTOBER 2020 AND the LIVE STREAM Concert will take place on the third night, Saturday, 3rd October 2020. Phil Coulter has been a towering presence on the world music stage for over 50 years and remains an iconic figure in Irish Music. What an amazing feeling it was to see IRELAND LADIES HOCKEY Team line out to Rugby National Anthem ‘Ireland's Call' written by none other than the legend that is PHIL COULTER. And then of course they qualified for The Olympics. Phil Coulter, one of Ireland's best-loved and most iconic musicians last year released his heartfelt biography ‘Bruised, Never Broken'. Phil Coulter's biography is the story of the author's remarkable rise from modest beginnings on the streets of post-war Derry to the summit of the global charts as a composer to a host of the era's biggest stars such as Luke Kelly, Cliff Richard, Sandie Shaw and Elvis Presley…. Phil Coulter's place among the great song-writers of the modern age was cemented in history the day Elvis Presley recorded “My Boy”, a top 20 hit in the US and across the world. He is the only Irish artist to have a song recorded by Elvis Presley. His song ‘Puppet On a String' won the Eurovision and his song ‘Congratulations' placed 2nd in the Eurovision. His song ‘The Town I loved So Well' is one of the most played tracks on Irish radio and his ‘Ireland's call' our rugby anthem, is played at all our international rugby games. Very few in the music business can boast of having chart entries in every decade since the sixties. Even fewer can match the range of Phil's output – from Eurovision winners to folk classics, from tender ballads to sporting anthems. He has achieved world-wide recognition as a hit songwriter, notching up chart entries with a diverse list of artists from ELVIS PRESLEY to Cliff Richard, LUKE KELLY, Cilla Black to Waylon Jennings, from Bobby Vinton to The Bay City Rollers. His production credits include Van Morrison, Sinead O'Connor, Elvis Costello, Lisa Stansfield, Marianne Faithful and Richard Harris while in Ireland his successes have ranged from the Dubliners to Planxty, from Paddy Reilly to the Furey Brothers. He has performed with everyone from James Galway and the London Symphony Orchestra to Nanci Griffith and The Blue Moon Orchestra, not to mention Henry Mancini, Elmer Bernstein and Quincy Jones! Show Notes: Robert Franz Website Stella's Magical Musical Balloon Ride Robert Franz Bio: Acclaimed conductor, Robert Franz, recognized as "an outstanding musician with profound intelligence," has held to three principles throughout his career: a commitment to the highest artistic standards, to creating alliances and building bridges in each community he serves, and a dedication to being a strong force in music education.  As Music Director of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra and Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival Orchestra, Associate Conductor of the Houston Symphony, and newly appointed Artistic Advisor of the Boise Baroque Orchestra, he has achieved success through his focus on each of these principles. His appeal as a first-rate conductor and enthusiastic award-winning educator is acclaimed by critics, composers, and audiences of all ages.  Composer Bright Sheng praised Franz for his "extremely musical and passionate approach towards music making."  Franz is in increasing demand as a guest conductor, whose upcoming and recent engagements include appearances with orchestras in Austin, Buffalo, Fort Worth, Winston-Salem, Reno, and Opera Idaho.  Additional recent guest conducting appearances include the Cleveland Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, North Carolina Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, and Italy's Orchestra da Camera Fiorentinas.  Franz is equally comfortable and effective coaching more than 50 student orchestras each season.  His versatility has led to collaborations with a wide array of artists, including James Galway, Joshua Bell, Rachel Barton Pine, Chris Botti, Idina Menzel, and Judy Collins.  An eloquent speaker, Franz recently presented a TEDx Talk entitled Active Listening and Our Perception of Time. In his eighth season as Music Director with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, Franz was recognized by the Windsor Endowment for the Arts with its Arts Leadership Award.  Highlights of the 2019/2020 season include a presentation of Madama Butterfly in concert and Canadian composer Tobin Stokes' Symphony No. 3 'The Piper.'  Recent collaborations include the Windsor International Film Festival, Art Gallery of Windsor, Windsor Public Library, Canadian Historical Aviation Association, and the University of Windsor. Franz serves as Artistic Director of the Boise Baroque Orchestra, which will include collaborations with Opera Idaho in a semi-staged performance of Handel's Acis and Galatea featuring Grammy Award winning tenor, Karim Sulayman, the Boise the High School Chamber Orchestra and the Boise Philharmonic Master Chorale.  Under his leadership, the orchestra will undertake its first ever commercial recording project of Classical Oboe Concerti for Centaur Records featuring rising star oboist Bhavani Kotha. This season Franz celebrates his 13th year as Associate Conductor of the Houston Symphony where he was recently honored as the first member of the orchestra conducting staff with the Raphael Fliegel Award for Visionary Leadership.  It was presented to him in recognition of his immense success in advancing the organization's education and community engagement activities. As Founder and Music Director of the Idaho Orchestra Institute, now in its fourth year, Franz takes young musicians on an exploration of major orchestral repertoire that explores the complete musician. In addition to his current posts, Franz served as Music Director of the Boise Philharmonic from 2008-2016, and the Mansfield Symphony (OH) from 2003-2010.  When not on the podium he can be found on the slopes, skiing slowly and carefully, stretching in a yoga class, and non-competitively trying his hardest to win at a game of cards with his family.   Afternoon Ti Blog Instagram - @highafternoonti   Intro/Outro Music Our Big Adventure by Scott Holmes

TBJ119: Clarke Rigsby of Tempest Recording on Paul McCartney, Steve Gadd and his Most Improved Player trophy Clarke Rigsby of Tempest Recording has acquired a reputation amongst his peers for being “musically militant.” Nuff said. From his site: Clarke Rigsby of Tempest Recording has acquired a reputation amongst his peers for being “musically militant.” Today, technology often overshadows or masks (or invents…) true musical talent, and although Clarke has the tools to “fix it in the mix,” he’d rather let music come from the musician and not the machine. Clarke combines his technical savvy and musical talent with his engineering and production experience giving his clients the appropriate combination for producing a first-rate project. Since 1980, Clarke’s recording history would be called diverse. Clarke has worked with such artists as Paul McCartney, Joey DeFrancesco, Glen Campbell, Ike Turner, Deepak Chopra, Dr. Billy Taylor, Hal Blaine, David Grisman, Jimmy Smith, The Phoenix Boys Choir, The Four Tops, Bobby Hutcherson, Don Edwards, James Moody, Rex Allen, Waylon Jennings, Frank Gambale, Alice Cooper, James Galway, Boston Brass, Brownie McGee, Tower of Power, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, Joe Alessi, Phil Smith (New York Philharmonic), Mark O’Connor, Peter Erskine, El Chicano, Honey Boy Edwards, UNM Wind Ensemble, Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra, Eric Burdon, Snuff Garrett, Lee Hazlewood, R. Two of the student participants were able to join us for a talk about this unique experience and how it has impacted their lives. Check out our interview with Hunter Green from Wenonah, a masters student at Mannes Conservatory of Music, where he studies with Judy Mendenhall; and Hannah Lee a student at East Brunswick High School.
