Hey there, everybody! It's me, Count Vacula, bringing you a brand-new No Filter with Count Vacula and a brand-new friend to meet!I'm so excited about today's guest! Her name is Kari Byron and most people know her from the TV show MythBusters, where Kari and her friends conducted all kinds of crazy science experiments to learn the truth about things. They tested everything from whether elephants are actually scared of mice (they aren't) to whether a person can really climb a building on a rope of human hair like Rapunzel's prince did (they can)! Kari loves learning so much that she even started a kids' content platform called EXPLR—it's full of amazing science videos that teachers and families can use to help 5th–10th graders learn more about the world. Kari and I have a lot of things in common, including the fact that we both like to eat delicious bugs! I eat them when they fall under the couch, but Kari buys hers specially. She even brought a bag of chocolate-covered crickets to the show! She taught me that eating food made from insects is a great way to help the planet, because they're full of protein and it's really easy to make more of them. But you probably shouldn't eat any bugs unless your grown-up gives them to you.Kari and I talked about toilet monsters, and cardboard spaceships, and how you need to keep practicing at things if you want to get them right. That's why I keep practicing my getting-to-know-you skills! Making new friends can be difficult, or even feel a little scary—but the more I keep doing it, the better I get at it and the more confident I feel, even when I meet a TV star like Kari!It was super fun getting to know Kari, and I think you're going to have a great time too!I'll be back after awhile with another new person for you to meet, but until then, I hope you're practicing making friends and meeting new people. Is there someone you made friends with who you really like? Write me and tell me about them! I want to know what you have in common with them, and what you don't have in common with them, but most importantly, I'd love to know—how were you kind today?See you soon, pal!Vac

I'm not sure how to describe this episode and do it justice. Audrey (different Audrey than "I almost knocked over my perfume samples") generously shares her life with Jolene. The point of this is an intervention in popular understandings of "socialization," and then a question: what constitutes having done a gender transition? Listen for an exploration of autism, gender expressed through "horizontal moral policing," r/anarchocapitalism, Kari Byron as #goals, leftcom teens, and more. There's an unacknowledged throwback to "neet as a gender" in here too. This episode was really great. Please listen.

For many, poetry feels like finding the hidden meaning the poet worked so hard to hide from the reader. If poetry confuses your students, they're likely to avoid it altogether. In Whispering in the Wind, master educator Linda Rief provides a cure for poetry agony. She introduces “Heart Books,” a project inspired by the Heart Maps of Georgia Heard. Linda has used Heart Books throughout her teaching career to help students read more poetry, connect with it, and see how they, too, could write poetically. Help students find (and respond to) poetry they'll love Linda explains how to create and use Heart Books in any classroom by: helping students discover poets who surprise and delight them using Heart Books as a pathway to find poetry that rings true for each student encouraging students to deepen their understanding of themselves, and others teaching students to respond to poetry with an authentic voice How do you squeeze one more unit into your curriculum? This is not a book about teaching a standalone poetry unit. Instead, you'll learn how to use transition times for this learning—all those in-between times throughout the year, such as right before a new unit, and leading up to, or returning from, vacations or holidays. Linda believes this is work worth doing in any classroom because “poetry is what ‘whispers in the wind,' guiding us toward deeper reading and a heightened awareness of what makes compelling writing.”

Hello everyone! Today, I am re-releasing what I believe is the one of the most important podcasts in the history of the show. Not only is it filled with honest and real world talk, it is filled with research based advice and insight from one of the premier thinkers on education today. In this episode, I sit down with Alfie Kohn and discuss a range of topics, such as why grading hurts more than it helps, why rewards do more harm than good, and why the testing obsession leads to bad teaching. I consider these the three pillars of what holds up an outdated educational model, and Alfie Kohn is the main reason for that perspective. Without a doubt, Alfie has influenced my teaching in such fundamental ways, and I know his thinking, research, and expertise will encourage you to question some of the norms of our educational climate. Alfie Kohn writes and speaks widely on human behavior, education, and parenting. The most recent of his 14 books are SCHOOLING BEYOND MEASURE…And Other Unorthodox Essays About Education (2015) and THE MYTH OF THE SPOILED CHILD: Challenging the Conventional Wisdom About Children and Parenting (2014). Of his earlier titles, the best known are PUNISHED BY REWARDS (1993), NO CONTEST: The Case Against Competition (1986), UNCONDITIONAL PARENTING (2005), and THE SCHOOLS OUR CHILDREN DESERVE (1999). I want to let you know about a free, virtual, conference for "cool" science educators coming up on August 5th. Its the 9th ScIC Science is Cool unconference. This week on Travel Genius, Mark and Nikki tackle one of thorniest subjects in travel right now: should we be buying carbon offsets for every flight we take? Or should we follow Greta Thunberg's lead, and scrap any plans to hop on a plane for the foreseeable future? Or is the impact of flying greatly overrated compared with many other industries – and simply called out as it's seen as a perk of the privileged? If you're coming down with a case of flygskam (flight shame, in Swedish), they have advice on how to cure it, including how to be sure that any offsets you buy are truly impactful rather than pure greenwashing. If your New Year's resolution is to travel more mindfully, we've got your covered. As for this week's guest, she's the self-proclaimed MacGirlver, Kari Byron. The former Mythbusters staple is now host of her own globetrotting show for kids, Crash Test World that's aimed at using science to explore the way we live across the globe. She joins Travel Genius this week to share smart tips from her travels, which included backpacking around the world aged 23. Like a Swiss Army knife, she's multipurpose and handy in any situation, whether it involves staying safe in your hotel room or keeping kids engaged when sightseeing. And she has something in common with Jason Atherton when it comes to keeping food tasty, wherever you are.Want to share your own Travel Genius moments? If you're lucky, we'll share your best tips on a future episode.Correction: This podcast misidentified the name of the carbon offset company, Cool Edge. In this episode, I recap my experience at the #TechCrunchDisrupt2018 Conference. #TechCrunchDisrupt is where you'll find the renowned Startup Battlefield competition, a virtual Hackathon, hundreds of startups in Startup Alley, Workshops and legendary networking at their After Parties all in San Francisco, where startup dreams began. Two of the best interviews at the conference were with #Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi and Cruise Founder Kyle Vogt. In the interview with Khosrowshahi, he explains why Uber is investing heavily in Scooters stating that it is part of "building a [transportation] platform." Khosrowshahi also explains that Uber will not longer just be a ride sharing company, but a business that will manage "point-to-point" transportation, which could include scooters, trains, cars and many more forms of transportation. Self-driving cars are the future and Cruise has relaunched its strategy to dominate this space. Vogt explains why Cruise had to drop its retrofit strategy to focus on the future of self-driving cars. Vogt also gives Elon Musk a back-slap by saying that too many executives in Silicon Valley were to arrogant to seek and accept help. Vogt explained that his partnership with General Motors is the perfect partnership for a startup in this space. In episode 33, I teach startup how to fight like a Guerrillapreneur. In the episode, I showcase my 4-Ds framework that reaches the same conclusion that Vogt came to in partnering with General Motors. Please check out that episode https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/ceyeroconsulting/episodes/2018-08-23T12_26_37-07_00. I spent time in Start Alley meeting with the most disruptive robotics companies. First, I met with Kiwi Robotics ("https://www.kiwicampus.com"). #Kiwicampus provides autonomous delivery robots that can delivery food directly to your door. Using their app, you can unlock the Kiwi Robot and retrieve your food. Second, I interviewed Erin Llao, the founder Mule Robotics (https://www.mulerobotics.com). #MuleRobotics created a shopping cart that follows you in the store while also calculating your total and paying for your items. MuleRobotics makes shopping easy. Third, I met with Smart Gurlz, creators of the world's only programmable robot for girls. Kari Byron, former star of Mythbusters, has teamed up with founder Sharmi Albreachtsen, to promote a robot toy designed for girls that can teach them to program. Finally, I met with the founder of Koder (https://www.koder.com), is a gig economy freelance platform where top coders compete for bounties/tasks. Koder is an outcome-based alternative to Upwork (UPWK) and Gigster. Are you an artist/singer/songwriter? Want to feature your new song on my podcast FREE OF CHARGE, tweet me @guerillapreneur. Fame often takes its toll. Mitch Hedberg is an obvious case. The other Mitch learned to let it go which is why he's still around. Kari, well known as the Mythbusters girl, is also still around, and she's got a book on how. Unsurprisingly, it involves science. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Most expecting women ask their doctors whether it's okay to eat blue cheese, or have the odd glass of wine, while they're pregnant. Or maybe whether to stay away from fish, because of the mercury. When she was pregnant with her daughter several years ago, though, MythBusters' Kari Byron took her maternal Q & A to a whole different level."I'd be going to my doctor saying, 'All right, so, when do I have to stop shooting guns because she has ears?'" recalls Byron on this week’s episode. "And the doctor would say, 'Hmm, I have never, ever had that question before. I'll get back to you.' I come back a little later: 'How far away do I need to be from an explosion of this much C-4?' 'Huh, I've never had that question asked. I have no idea, I don't even know where to refer you right now, I'll get back to you.'"As a co-host of arguably the most successful science-based show on television, Byron has developed a reputation as a courageous and fun-loving guide to testing the truth behind so many ideas that we take for granted. On Inquiring Minds this week, we talk to Byron about Mythbusters, bear repellents, zombie escapes, and how an artist can make you love science. This episode also features a report by Mother Jones' Brett Brownell on our growing ability to detect extra-solar planets, and a discussion of, yes, the myth that antioxidant vitamins protect against cancer.iTunes: itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/inquiring-minds/id711675943RSS: feeds.feedburner.com/inquiring-mindsStitcher: stitcher.com/podcast/inquiring-minds
