Dan McCrum investigated a story at Wirecard that had him fearing for his safety.British journalist Dan McCrum usually writes about businesses for the London-based newspaper, the Financial Times. In 2014 he got a tip off alleging there were so-called gangsters behind a much-feted German company called Wirecard. The company had started small, taking care of the technical part of processing online payments. But by the time Dan starting looking into it, it was entering the big league. And what he discovered took him into unchartered territory: of international spies, underworld deals and fraud on a massive scale. The chief executive Markus Braun was arrested in 2020 and is now on trial in Germany. He denies all charges against him and says he himself was deceived. At the request of Germany, Interpol issued a red notice for the arrest of Wirecard's former Chief Operating Officer, Jan Marsalek. He is believed to have fled to Russia.Dan's written a book about his investigation called Money Men: A Hot Startup, A Billion Dollar Fraud, A Fight for the Truth.Presenter: Jo Fidgen Producer: Jo Impey Editor: Munazza KhanGet in touch: liveslessordinary@bbc.co.uk or WhatsApp: 0044 330 678 2784
Lionel Barber is the former editor of the Financial Times and probably the only journalist on the planet to have interviewed Presidents Obama, Trump and Putin. Under his stewardship, the FT metamorphosed from a newspaper into a digital subscription business, and was sold to the Japanese company Nikkei for 44x earnings. And as editor, Barber fully backed up former guest Dan McCrum in his investigation of Wirecard. I was delighted when Lionel agreed to come on the show to talk about his new book, Gambling Man, a biography of Masa Son, founder of Softbank and creator of the $100bn Vision Fund. I have long been curious about Son, who for 3 days at the peak of the dot.com boom was the richest man in the world. Barber spent 3 years writing his meticulously researched book for which he interviewed 150 subjects, including Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, as he explains in our discussion. Some of his stories, including his description of Son's inner sanctum, are marvellous. Hacker, Privatdetektive, Bestechungsversuche.
It's owned by PDD holdings but its best-known brand is TEMU - which you could describe as an online flea market but it's worth $150bn. It's huge in China where it's from and now it's heading our way. It's already established its European HQ in Ireland. But like many Chinese companies its ownership and control is secretive and now the Irish watchdog the Coimisiun na Meán is looking at TEMU as well. Dan McCrum from the Financial Times has taken a deep dive into TEMU.

The man at the heart of the German Wirecard scandal, Jan Marsalek was once believed to be a straightforward fraudster. Recent reporting, however, has revealed him as a potential Russian intelligence asset. Dan McCrum, investigative reporter for The Financial Times, is well versed with Marsalek's shadowy ways. Investigating Wirecard saw him tailed by private detectives and smeared with sham allegations of market manipulation before his reporting eventually brought the massive fraud to light. This week on Whale Hunting, host Bradley Hope speaks to Dan on the latest updates about Marsalek's location, how the Austrian businessman may have ended up embroiled in Russian espionage, and why increasingly few corners of the financial universe remain untouched by dark money. Online payment service Wirecard was once Germany's biggest tech darling and the country's answer to Silicon Valley, at its peak valued at more than 24 billion euros; until 2020, when it was exposed as one of the most audacious corporate frauds of the modern era. A tip-off in 2014 started Financial Times journalist Dan McCrum on a seven year investigation, uncovering corrupt business practices and fraudulent financial reporting. But as he pursued the story, Wirecard fought back viciously; with online abuse, hacking, electronic eavesdropping, physical surveillance and intimidation. But the house of cards eventually came crashing down. Dan McCrum tells the story in his book Money Men: A Hot Startup, A Billion Dollar Fraud, A Fight for the Truth, which been made into a Netflix documentary; Skandal! Bringing Down Wirecard.
When FT investigative journalist Dan McCrum began challenging the financial model of so-called fintech pioneer Wirecard, he was threatened with criminal charges in Germany – and worse from the murky forces of the Russian underworld. Yet he persisted, demonstrating that Wirecard was a fraudulent operation that had hoodwinked auditors worldwide – and many others, including former German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Hear Russell Napier ask Dan about his extraordinary book Money Men, and how the hubristic forces behind Wirecard were doomed to fail. For more information on the Advanced Valuation in Financial Markets course mentioned by Russell, please see www.didaskoeducation.org.

Financial Times investigative reporter Dan McCrum was named Press Gazette's journalist of the year at the 2020 British Journalism Awards for his part in the "brave" investigation that took down German fintech giant Wirecard. McCrum and his FT colleagues, who also won investigation of the year, spent a total of six years trying to expose fraud at the company, and along the way faced smears, criminal charges in Germany, threats and intimidation. The investigation racked up hundreds of thousands of pounds in legal bills for the FT – but the newspaper provided its investigations team with the time and resources to stick with the story despite the cost and risks. McCrum has now spoken to Press Gazette to mark the release of a new Netflix documentary about the story: Skandal! Bringing Down Wildcard. He spoke about the hardest parts of the story and its personal risks - and why it is so important for the FT and other newspapers to facilitate these major investigations. Hosted on Acast. In this podcast he discusses the process of discovery, fighting accusations of market manipulation, why the warning signs were missed, and much more. Hosted on Acast. In this episode, Ben White, the Founder of Crafty Counsel, is joined by Pav Gill, who was the Head of Legal for the Asia-Pacific region based in Singapore at the now defunct German fintech company Wirecard. In 2018 Pav was forced out of the company after his efforts to conduct an internal investigation were thwarted. He then went to the media. Pav spoke to the Financial Times and the journalist who worked on the story, Dan McCrum, wrote a book about the widespread fraud at Wirecard called Money Men. Pav shares what he learned from his experience and what advice he would give to other in-house lawyers.

Wirecard was the rare German startup that seemed primed to become a global player. But it was all too good to be true, as Dan McCrum, financial sleuth at the FT, ultimately discovered. We talk to him about how he unmasked the scam, overcoming spies, mobsters and even the German financial regulator to get at the truth. And also about favourite scams and why fraud is so damned difficult to stamp out. For the final episode of season 1 of The Laundry, we invited investigative reporter, Dan McCrum to speak about his work on the Wirecard-story. This is a story about the wild rise and crushing fall of the tech giant Wirecard that was exposed as a billion dollar accounting fraud. The story raises big questions about corporate fraud, money laundering and the need for strong financial regulations. This episode is a roller coaster of events and stories and if you enjoyed it, we really recommend getting Dan's book, Money Men. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
'Markets can stay irrational for longer than you can stay solvent' is a classic maxim for investors, but it holds true for journalists too. In this episode, we speak with the Financial Times's Dan McCrum and Paul Murphy (Tracy's old boss) about their multi-year effort to expose fraud at Wirecard, a German payments giant that went spectacularly belly-up after billions of dollars were found to have gone missing. Dan, who's just written a book about his experience called "Money Men," explains how he first spotted problems at what was once described as "Europe's greatest fintech," and how hard it was to convince others of the truth. Rather than going after Wirecard itself, German authorities went after the journalists and short-sellers who were warning of the scheme. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

DAN MCCRUM – MONEY MEN... with TRE´s Giles Brown
How did a journalist with a relentless appetite for the truth, bring down a $30bn German tech company? The company in question is Wirecard and the journalist is my guest on this episode, FT reporter Dan McCrum. He's just released a new book called ‘Money Men: A Hot Startup, A Billion Dollar Fraud, A Fight For The Future' in which he explores both the story of Wirecard and its downfall and the efforts he went to as a journalist to investigate it. In what was one of the — if not *the* — financial investigations of the decade, Dan and his FT colleagues pursued a story of fraud, that is ready-made for a movie. Yet, it's a real-life story that reveals hidden worlds of short-sellers and whistleblowers, pornographers and private militias, hackers and spies. In Money Men, Dan explains not only the story of WireCard but also how he and his colleagues went about investigating it.In our discussion, we explore:- How Dan became a Financial Times journalist;- The types of story he likes to investigate and why WireCard fascinated him;- The lengths reporters need to go to, in order to get to the story;- How short sellers helped provide valuable insights;- The astonishing response of the German authorities to the Wirecard story;- Some incredible stories that unfolded as Dan investigated;- The personal toll such a story takes on a reporter;- The role of cognitive biases in reporting and our perception of the world. To find out more about Money Men, which is out now, visit https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/144/1444756/money-men/9781787635043.htmlThe German version is called The House of Wirecard: https://www.ullstein-buchverlage.de/nc/buch/details/house-of-wirecard-9783430210645.htmlTo learn more about Dan's investigation you can read this FT profile:https://www.ft.com/content/745e34a1-0ca7-432c-b062-950c20e41f03Dan also spoke at ECEC — Europe's largest Ethics & Compliance Conference in 2020 – you can watch a recording of that here: https://www.eqs.com/compliance-knowledge/events/ecec-mccrum/ .ECEC is returning soon, so do join me at ECEC 2022 in October. This week, Riley, Milo, and Alice speak with FT reporter and author Dan McCrum (@FD) about his forthcoming book 'Money Men: A Hot Startup, a Billion Dollar Fraud, a Fight for the Truth.' We speak to Dan McCrum, the award winning FT journalist who exposed Wirecard as a fraud. Once a stockmarket darling valued at over €25bn, Wirecard crashed to worthless in June 2020, when its auditors could not confirm €1.9bn of cash. Dan pursued the story for six years and has now written a book about the saga. “Money Men” is an amazing account of how the company used every tactic possible to disguise its activities. This is an extraordinary tale and Dan, a brilliant raconteur, explains the highs and lows of his struggle to reveal the truth. We also speak to market participants on the buy and sell side to get their perspective.
Izabella Kaminska invites the FT's Dan McCrum and Paul Murphy for a glass of Gavi and wasabi calamari at Casa Dino Restaurant in Chiswick to celebrate the launch of Dan's new book Money Men, the story of the downfall of payments company Wirecard.
Auditors you FAILED… EY auditors that is. In the Wirecard case. Dan McCrum is an investigative journalist who was involved in the Wirecard case, one of the largest fraud cases in recent history. In this AUDIT 15 FUN episode, I discussed some of the parallels between Investigative Journalism and Internal Audit with Dan. He had some tips on how to become trusted with your sources and insights into why EY utterly failed by signing off Wirecard financial statements for about 10 years. He nailed it on the reason why…listen in to find out what he had to say! His new book ‘Money Men: A Hot Startup, A Billion Dollar Fraud, A Fight for the Truth' will be published in the UK on June 16 and sometime in the fall in the U.S.

Euro zweifelhaft.
In September 2014, the FT’s Dan McCrum received a tip about a fast-growing German fintech group, Wirecard. Over the next couple of years Dan and his colleagues uncovered the secret behind the payment company’s meteoric growth: many of the customers listed in company documents did not exist. In this episode Dan tells the story of the whistleblowers, shoe-leather reporting, hacking, suspected surveillance and legal threats that led to Wirecard’s downfall. ---Review clips: CNBC, Deutsche Welle Further reading:The double life of Wirecard’s Jan Marsalek https://www.ft.com/content/511ecf86-ab40-486c-8f76-b8ebda4cc669Inside Wirecardhttps://www.ft.com/wirecardDan’s 2015 story for Alphavillehttps://ftalphaville.ft.com/2015/04/27/2127427/the-house-of-wirecard/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Wirecard filed for insolvency on Thursday, days after the German payments group revealed a multiyear fraud that led to the arrest of its former chief executive. The FT’s Dan McCrum has been following Wirecard for the past five years and will upack the company’s current position. Plus, the Federal Reserve has capped dividends and banned share buybacks by big US banks in an attempt to strengthen the financial system in the pandemic. Scandal-hit German payments firm admitted $2.1bn is missing from the Philippines. Dan McCrum of the Financial Times brings us the latest details. Also in the programme, whilst the coronavirus pandemic has supercharged the move towards home working, our regular workplace commentator Peter Morgan questions the wisdom of those who argue there may be no need for lots of workers to return to the office ever again. A major outbreak of Covid-19 at a meat processing plant in north-western Germany has forced 7,000 people into quarantine. Peter Schmidt from the Food, Beverages and Catering Union in Hamburg tells us why he thinks German meat processing plants have been falling victim. Plus, Will Bain asks whether a lack of live support could force some rugby clubs out of business. Eric de Cromieres is president of France’s Clermont Auvergne club, and describes their challenges. And we hear there have also been difficult decisions for Colin Mansbridge, chief executive of the most successful rugby club on the planet, the Crusaders of Christchurch, New Zealand.
