In this podcast episode, I'm speaking with Jon Radoff, the founder and CEO of Beamable, a company that enables game developers to launch live service games. Jon has been in gaming for ages and has founded several startups in the gaming space. In this discussion, we talk about what Jon learned about company building from his previous company Disruptor Beam, what he thinks is happening with all the buzzwords in gaming, like the metaverse, and where that is leading the industry. To share one quote from Jon, it would be this one: "The thing the game industry will teach you is humility. And if you don't have humility, when you start building games, you will eventually have humility because it's only a matter of time. Before you find out that your, your brilliant idea, your beautiful idea, just doesn't resonate with a large enough audience to become commercially viable because you look at the intersection points of success in this industry." And there's so much more. Here's my discussion with Jon Radoff.

We're also joined by The Roddenberries to talk about their upcoming Virtual Extravaganza! In Star Trek gaming, we look at Star Trek Online's Legen–wait for it–dary Mirror Bundle and Bort's borked weapons. Finally, we head “On Screen” to trek out Discovery's season 3 premiere - “That Hope Is You, Part 1” Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Question Is: CQ: Who do YOU think Discovery's “Big Bad” will be? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Discovery Renewed for a Fourth Season Star Trek: Discovery's third season took off–or crash landed– this past week, but the cast and crew continue to look towards the future. That's true both in front of–and behind–the camera, because Star Trek: Discovery Season FOUR was officially announced on Star Trek.com this week! The Star Trek website made the announcement via a 57 second video, with appearances from showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise–and series stars Sonequa Martin-Green and Doug Jones. But with COVID restrictions, how will the show start filming? Likely in much the same way season 3 wrapped. In an article published on IndieWire, Alex Kurtzman talked a bit about Star Trek's pioneering home-created visual effects. ”Our editors, miraculously and heroically, took their editing bays into their living rooms, and we cut the entire season, in collaboration, just the way I'm talking to you right now. We also scored the entire season, mixed the entire season, color timed the entire season, all from this laptop [over which this Zoom interview occurred].” Image credit: CBS Kurtzman explained that even actors took the craft home, filming with motion-capture suits so they could be inserted later. ”It's an actual actor at their home motion-capture studio, which then gets rendered in the computer as a living thing. It's a real person… Each of our actors have been scanned, so we can actually impose their faces on a body, which is quite something.” The cast is reportedly in Toronto so that they may appropriately quarantine, and there may be a “Mandalorian”-ish AR wall heading to the Star Trek sets. So the future–of the future–looks pretty bright! Star Trek: Discovery on SFX “The World's Number One Sci Fi, Fantasy, and Horror Mag”, SFX, caught up with the cast of Star Trek: Discovery–and its captain Alex Kurtzman–to talk about Discovery's third season. But, since Kurtzman has the proverbial keys to the Star Trek castle, discussion veered to some of the other Trek offerings. Break out the bibs, polish your silverware, and grab a seat at the table–we have Trek Nuggets. Kurtzman told reporter Darren Scott that Discovery's jump to the distant future wasn't always in the cards. The plan was originally to jump a mere 300 years. When pressed about why that was changed, Kurtzman replied ”I can only answer half of your question – I don't want to spoil things. But I will tell you that one thing that we were very excited about was being entirely free of canon. "Michelle [Paradise] and I certainly felt strongly that jumping 1,000 years into the future just gave us room to invent a lot of things. It allowed us to put Star Trek into a blender, meaning every assumption that you have about staples of the Trek universe can be upended in 1,000 years, because nothing could possibly be exactly what it was. That was a really exciting challenge for us”. Image credit: Future Discovery Freed from the Past(?) Kurtzman continued these sentiments when talking about Discovery's “Big Bad”–which would NOT be the Borg, because that story was told by Picard. ”Yes! It goes back to what I was saying earlier, which is that putting things in a blender means people who used to be allies are now enemies and vice versa. That's a really interesting thing to play with, because it forces you to take what you know about Star Trek, and some of the characters and some of the species and aliens, and see them through the looking glass in a different way.”.  When asked about the toll jumping 1000 into the future took on the Discovery crew, and whether the past would still play a part in season 3, Kurtzman responded cautiously. ”I'm trying to answer your question without spoiling too much. [...] Burnham is absolutely going to look to the past and try and understand what happened to Spock. [...] She will dive into that and she will get to see what became of her brother. And that will actually impact the story for her in a significant way. I've just told you more than I told anybody about that!” Alex Kurtzman with SFX Kurtzman explained the difficulties of filming during the epidemic, calling it “a very systematised, militarised operation”. But the Franchise Captain wasn't throwing a pity-party. In fact, he mentioned there was some GOOD coming from the social distancing and crippling feelings of isolation. ”We would have been in production already on Picard, but we couldn't be because of Covid. It's pushed our Discovery and Strange New Worlds dates just a little bit, but I think we're actually planning on staying on track for those. "The silver linings are that Akiva [Goldsman] and Henry [Alonso Myers] are ready to show up and able to really get ahead with scripts. By the time we go back into production, we will have a lot of scripts ready to go, which is not usually how it is for us. We're always running ahead of the freight train that is production and trying not to get flattened, but this time we actually have some advanced warning with a lot of prep time." And what of the oft-discussed Star Trek films? Kurtzman has some thoughts on those, too. ”I have no involvement in it right now. I don't know where that's going. Frankly, I have my hands very full. Having done two of those films, I loved them so much, and I really would love to see continuity and unification between the features and the TV side, because I think it's what's good for Star Trek, and that can be done any number of ways.” The article is so full of info, we could spend an entire show going through it. We'll post a link to the magazine, which features interviews with the cast and even MORE goodies, in our show notes. Mike McMahan on Humanity Following last week's interview extravaganza, Mike McMahan followed it up with - more interviews! Well, at least one more interview. This week the Lower Decks creator pulled up a chair with io9, Riker Maneuvering himself into discussing humanity. McMahan talked io9 reporter James Whitbrook about his feelings on Starfleet, perfection, and humans. ”We're constantly examining this concept of Starfleet that's like...everybody knows that Starfleet is the best of us, and they're perfect, and they're this unified group that's out in the stars looking for truth and everything has to be moral and ethical, and Prime Directive-y. But at the same time they're also human, you know? Every episode of Star Trek is about humanity as much as it is about our future—there's aspects of humanity that just feel like...Star Trek has humans in it. It's not a perfect, ideal, robotic future for us.” McMahon continued on topics he covered last week, like replicator programs and the ‘need-to-know' struggles lower decker's deal with. He also, again, discussed humanity's need for stories - and how that need affects Lower Decks. ”You see that a lot with our lower deckers, and with the bridge crew as well—humans are a species that gab. We process and we share information that is interesting to us. Part of the humanity on the Cerritos is they're talking about Roga Danar! They're talking about Data! These are the things that are interesting to them, and it serves a dual purpose of making that humanity come through and making that examination of context in Starfleet come through.” Image credit: CBS STAR TREK GAMING NEWS The Legendary Mirror Bundle By Thomas Reynolds Does your resume start with the words “bigoted, hateful warmonger” and go downhill from there? But who cares: it feels so good to be so bad. Image credit: Cryptic Studios What does this mean for you, the player? If the Bundle only included items, then it'd be for new players who really like Mirror Universe episodes–or Armada members preparing for Mirror Month. However the Legendary Dreadnought Cruiser throws all that math off. Depending on the nature of the T6 trait, it could be compelling for players who favor beam-based loadouts–or even necessary. https://twitter.com/trekonlinegame/status/1318335256584462336?s=20 Legendary Dreadnought Cruiser By Shane Hoover What kind of warship is so tough, so powerful, so dominant that Picard, Riker, Data, LaForge and…Reginald Barclay plotted to steal her from Edward Jellico? Well, as its story was told in the pages of IDW Comics, the answer is, of course, the I.S.S. Enterprise-D. Now the Mirror Universe's most deadly warship has made its way to Star Trek Online as the T6 Legendary Dreadnought Cruiser. You could certainly call this the evil twin of the T6 Fleet Galaxy Dreadnought Cruiser that has been in the game for some time. The new ship diverges from the Fleet Galaxy Dreadnought in a few key spots. For starters, where the T6 Fleet Dreadnought sports a balanced 4/4 weapon loadout, the Legendary Dreadnought carries a more aggressive 5/3 layout. The Legendary ship also lets you double down on the Tactical abilities with a Lieutenant Commander Engineering/Command bridge seat. As with all Legendary ships, gaining maximum ship mastery grants access to the Starship Traits of its previous T6 variants.  It also comes with a brand new Starship Trait, “Best Hope of the Empire”, which grants a damage buff and temporary hull points on the use of Beam Overload or Lance abilities. Image credit: Cryptic Studios No More Power to Give, Captain By Thomas Reynolds Captains, you may have noticed that your Advanced Phaser or Disruptor arrays just don't have the destructive pep they once did. Or your Risian Kit Frame doesn't stack powers like it's supposed to, and the 30-day warranty already expired. You could try turning them off and on again (have you tried that?), or wait for Cryptic to make it all better. On October 17th, Jeremy “@BorticusCryptic” Randall clarified on Twitter that nonspecific issues with the Advanced beam arrays and Kit Frame power stacking were not intentional nerfs. Cryptic will fix them on an equally nonspecific timeline. https://twitter.com/BorticusCryptic/status/1317499703299239936?s=19 Beamable Bankruptcy By Shane Hoover Mobile game developer Beamable, known as Disruptor Beam back when they released Star Trek Timelines, has filed for bankruptcy as of October 1st. According to a VentureBeat article quoting Beamable CEO Jon Radoff, the bankruptcy will not mean the end of Beamable or its employees. Radoff says “[t]he reality of Disruptor Beam was that we built some great games, but we weren't really able to turn that into a sustainable business [...] But we did create this very valuable technology platform along the way. We will clean up the balance sheet, and then compete like any other startup.” The change at Beamable shouldn't have any real impact on Star Trek Timelines at this point, since the game is now run by Tilting Point using the Beamable technology platform as a service. The slogan - “If you haven’t seen it, it’s new to you” - seems as relevant now as it was in the VHS-recording nightmare times of 1998. Why, you ask? Because if you held out on watching “Star Trek: Discovery” due to CBS ALL ACCESS subscription costs, then you’ll have new-to-you Star Trek very very soon! On Wednesday August 26th, CBS released its revised fall line-up. The original CBS schedule featured fan-favorites including NCIS and Young Sheldon as well as newcomers like Chuck Lorre’s “B Positive” and Queen Latifa’s “The Equalizer” Reboot. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, CBS pivoted towards reality TV and previously non-broadcast programming to fill the gaps. One of those non-broadcast programs is, as we implied already, “Star Trek: Discovery”’s first season! CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl said of the revised line-up “This is hardly a traditional fall season, but we are prepared with a strong slate of original content while our regular scripted series begin production. Based on our current timeline, we hope to start rolling out our previously announced fall series as they become available in November.” So when will you be able to catch Discovery over-the-air? Starting Thursday September 17th, Discovery will air from 10PM to 11PM, following the popular “Big Brother” and “Love Island”. Chris Pine Is (WAS) Still Interested in a Star Trek IV Star Trek legend and Twitter connoisseur William Shatner has a history of changing his mind. He wants to play Kirk, Kirk’s story is already told. He loves his co-stars, he has problems with his co-stars. He wants to go to space...he still wants to go to space - okay that last one was a bad example, but you see where we’re going. But what about the other actor who’s played Starfleet’s youngest Captain. What about Chris Pine? We ask because this week, August 27th, the new podcast “Things are Going Great For Me With Claude Deering” launched an interview with A-lister Chris Pine. During the interview, the 40 year-old actor discussed his newest film - “Wonder Woman 1984” - partying with his mom, and of course, Star Trek. If you’re a fan of Kelvin Trek, what he had to say was heartening. Pine told Deering "I haven't heard anything. I mean, I get asked these questions all the time. I'm like the last person to find anything out. So, I've heard -- what have I heard? Tarantino is going to do one. And then, who is it? Noah Hawley was going to do something else, and then that fell through. And then he's going to do something with the Discovery, the new Alex Kurtzman-led cast. So, I really don't know. I know that Paramount is coming out of having restructured a bit and kind of a major corporate restructuring. So hopefully, when all that dust settles, something concrete will come out of it, and we'll get to work. I'd love to do it." If you’re a Kelvin fan, great news - right? Well, that brings us back to Pine’s convictions. This interview was recorded in April of this year, so if he is prone to changing his mind like his fellow-Kirk-actor...who knows where he stands today? Be sure to follow the link in our show notes to listen to the full episode of “Things are Going Great For Me”! George Takei Talks To StarTrek.com Another social-media guru straight   outta    Connie had some interesting things to say about his time on Star Trek, and whether or not he’d be interested in a return - though we shouldn't call it a comeback - he’s been here for years. George Takei, Star Trek’s own Hikaru Sulu, sat down with StarTrek.com and discussed his favorite episode of Star Trek’s Original series. Takei cited “The Naked Time”, saying ”I loved being unchained from that damn console. Episode after episode, there I am. They may have given me promotions, from the Lieutenant, to becoming the Lieutenant Commander, and then Commander, but I'm still there at that same console, saying “Aye. aye, sir, warp three!” Well, at least in that episode, I showed them that I had a life beyond just “Aye. aye, sir, warp three!” I can fence.” Takei also revealed some on-set drama regarding that episode, telling Bex April May ”Well, the fencing was an important scene, and I didn't know how to fence, either. I had to take formal fencing lessons a couple of weeks before we were to shoot that.[...] Jimmy Doohan, who played Scotty, was a very perceptive person. He heard the sound of my stamping and panting, and huffing and puffing, and walked all the way from the opposite end of the soundstage [...] Just as I'm lunging, he appears behind the flat, and I miss him, literally by inches, from his nose. He was shocked and startled, and went rushing back to the set, complaining to the Assistant Director, “George just assaulted me with his fencing foil!” For more of the interview with the ever-entertaining George Takei, including what he thought Star Trek VI should have been called and whether or not he would return as Sulu, trek out the link in our show notes! James Mackinnon on Creating - And Being - Picard’s Borg This week, Star Trek’s  “For Your Consideration” interviews continued. This time SYFY Wire spoke with a behind-the-scenes star - Dept head Prosthetics and Special Makeup Effects James MacKinnon. And as it turns out, MacKinnon is in front of the camera as well! The five-time Emmy winner - and this year’s nominee for his role as Makeup director on “Star Trek: Picard” - talked about his secret weapon - and it’s bananas  ”Yes. [Laughs] Bananas are my go-to for inside flesh. Whenever you slice somebody open, there’s fatty tissue and other layers of stuff. If you sculpt as deep as possible, and add a little bit of banana, little chunks of banana, with a little bit of [fake] blood, it makes it look like fatty tissue…. So I always have a banana in the trailer every day, just in case you need a little bit of meaty tissue...” Mackinnon also talked about his time in front of the camera, and how it affects interactions with the fans ”My assistants Richard [Redlefsen] and Alexei [Dmitriew] slipped me in during lunch, because we didn’t want production to wait. Our lunch break is 45 minutes, and this makeup usually takes an hour and a half, but we pounded through! I’m a very TNG-looking Borg, so it’s a bit of a throwback….” Bob Picardo Joins “To Meet the Faces You Meet” Finally this week, we’d like to mention that former Star Trek Doctor and all-around-great-science-ambassador Robert Picardo has landed a new role on the Kickstarter film "To Meet the Faces You Meet". From the "To Meet the Faces You Meet" kickstarter page, the synopsis states  The military thought they had created the ultimate weapon-a soldier (Friz) linked symbiotically with an artificially intelligent spaceship (MEAD: Mobile Extrasensory Autonomous Deceptor) with the ability to project illusions so real that they cannot be distinguished from reality. Together, Friz and MEAD became the most deadly fighting force the world had seen. There was one problem: An errant bit of programming instilled MEAD with a conscience and pacifist tendencies that made him and his human symbiote useless for military purposes. Scheduled for "decommission," Friz and MEAD go on the run, pursued by bounty hunters and an admiral with a personal axe to grind. Picardo will play ADMIRAL GILLETTE, the antagonist of the film. Other stars include Patton Oswalt and PATRICK WARBURTON. We’ll have a link to the kickstarter in our show notes! Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds George Brinson This week we are joined by George Brinson: A veteran, Information Technology Manager, and Star Trek Online player. Mr.Brinson talks with the team about how Star Trek Online has influenced him; and a troubling interaction with Cryptic support. Star Trek Timelines: Wolves and Wraiths From September 3rd through 7th, Star Trek Timelines players will conclude their human-Romulan history studies in the “Restoration” Hybrid Galaxy/Skirmish Event, the last chapter in the Capitoline Wolf Mega-Event. The ranked reward is sure to satisfy any player’s vaulting ambitions: Her most Imperial Majesty, and returning 5-star crew member, Emperor Georgiou. The new 5-star RomuLannister sister Narissa heads the event crew, along with 5-star Captain Erika Hernandez, and returning 4-star Rura Penthe Reed doing his best Patrick Bateman deep cut. Timelines also begins its Haunted Heroines campaign on September 3rd, featuring 5-star Pah-wraith Keiko and 4-star Tieran Possessed Kes. Disruptor Beam has yet to release details about the four-week event’s narrative. However it’s safe to say the current theme of confronting one’s past isn’t going away soon. Star Trek Fleet Command: Scopely Names a New Chief Business Officer Scopely, the developer behind Star Trek Fleet Command, purchased FoxNext Games back in January, and that acquisition has led to a new announcement. As reported on website GameDaily.biz, Scopely have named former FoxNext president Aaron Loeb as their new Chief Business Officer. Describing his position, Loeb said his responsibility is driving Scopely’s core business of game services. Speaking to GameDaily, he said,  Somehow, rooted in our industry’s history, we came to a belief that ‘fun’ is the opposite of ‘business’ … My experiences have taught me to recognize that when done right, ‘fun’ and ‘business’ are a near total overlap.  Loeb praises Scopely’s fearless approach to creative game development.  He goes so far as singling out Star Trek Fleet Command, saying  It’s a game that was given the time and support it needed to achieve the greatness that the team knew was within their grasp. And today, it’s one of the most (if not the most) deeply engaging games on mobile.

In Star Trek gaming, our friends, the Women at Warp, share an invaluable resource for gamers, Timelines gets a Mega-Event, and Modiphius is raising a small fortune for Black Lives Matter. Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Question Is: CQ:  Would you rather see a fourth Kelvin film, Noah Hawley’s Pandemic Pitch, or a 2021 version of “A Piece of the Action”? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Star Trek Movie Plans are Undecided Werner Herzog once said “I WOULD TRAVEL DOWN TO HELL AND WRESTLE A FILM AWAY FROM THE DEVIL IF IT WAS NECESSARY.”. We Star Trek fans may need to get in touch with Mr. Herzog - because the Star Trek film franchise is in a bit of limbo. On Friday August 7th, Deadline broke the story that Paramount’s newest film Captain - Emma Watts - was putting the Noah Hawley led Trek film on ice. According to the piece, Watts, who formerly ran many Franchises for Fox, was in the process of evaluating which Trek was most feasible for the studio moving forward. Hawley’s film was put on the back-burner in large part due to its plot. ”What we’re hearing is that [...] the Hawley pic  [...] calls for a new cast and might be about a deadly virus which might feel awkward given current circumstance”. The Hollywood Reporter’s sources confirm the rumor about the plot, adding “the virus wipes out vast parts of the known universe”. So what’s next? Is it all bad news? Not necessarily. According to Deadline, Hawley’s film moving back may mean another oft discussed Trek film could move forward. There are two options, and we’ve discussed them both ad-nauseum. The first is Star Trek by Quentin Tarantino, which we’ll get into in a minute. The other, and according to Deadline the most likely of the three films to get made, is the formerly-SJ Clarkson-helmed Star Trek Kelvin IV. The script brings back the Kelvin Enterprise and her crew, as well as Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk. It was dumped in favor of Hawley’s pitch due to the high price tag that went along with bringing back the Kelvin-crew, but according to Deadline it ”might have the cleanest path toward a relaunch, with an emphasis on boosting overseas gross numbers which have never been the franchise’s strong suit. These decisions will take place over the next few weeks.” So stay tuned for the next chapter of this ongoing saga! We Learn More About Star Trekantino Quentin Tarantino once said “THE GOOD IDEAS WILL SURVIVE.”. Let’s hope that’s true, because it feels like THIS idea has been around for a long time. THIS idea, of course, is the Tarantino helmed Star Trek film - Star Trekantino. This weeks Deadline piece shed some light on the on-again-off-again film, including it’s feasibility and - more interestingly - its plot. ”Tarantino dropped out as director, but the project is still viable based on an episode of the classic Star Trek series that takes place largely earthbound in a 30s gangster setting — might serve the franchise best as Logan-like spinoffs when the core franchise has been revitalized.”. So, tarantino wanted a “Piece of the Action”? Tarantino, as stated, dropped out as director, but still expressed excitement for the Michael L. Smith penned script. Tarantino told Deadline in January of this year ”I think they might make that movie, but I just don’t think I’m going to direct it. It’s a good idea. They should definitely do it and I’ll be happy to come in and give them some notes on the first rough cut.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2eRJozOZa0 Star Trek Prodigy Gets a Director/Co-Executive Producer Heading back to the small screen, Star Trek’s upcoming Nickelodeon offering - Star Trek: Prodigy - has a new creative lead - Ben Hibon. Hibon has been creating CG animation for video games, shorts, and movies since 2005; having most notably directed the animated “Tale of Three Brothers'' in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1. Along with his Creative lead role, Hibon will direct and serve as a co-executive producer on the Hageman Brothers series. Ramsey Naito of Nickelodeon group said of the addition ”Ben’s contributions to the world of animation are immeasurable, and we are so lucky to have his vision and creative genius on Star Trek: Prodigy. As an incredible storyteller and a world builder with a distinct vision, his original approach paired with this beloved property will bring the characters to life in a whole new way,” Hibon also expressed his excitement, saying in a release ”Getting the chance to work on an IP like Star Trek has been an incredible opportunity, particularly when partnered with the talented teams at Nickelodeon, CBS and Secret Hideout – who have been pushing the boundaries of what animation and serialized storytelling for younger audiences can deliver,” For another look at Ben Hibon’s work, we suggest trekking out “Codehunters”. We’ll have a link in our show notes, but as a heads up Viewer discretion is advised. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmeP1YkaeTo NYCC ReedPop Statement Stop spreadin' the germs, I'm wearing a mask Don’t want to be a part of it New York, Comic Con Or not. If your vagabond shoes were longing to stray through the very heart of  the Javitt center this October - to celebrate ReedPop’s New York Comic Con 2020 - you’ll have to find another approach to melt away your little-town blues. New York Comic Con is cancelled - sort of. In a statement released on their website, ReedPop said in part ”NYCC doesn’t stop just because we can’t do what we’ve done in the past. Instead, we look to the future: We may not be meeting in the queue hall each morning, but we’re excited to join forces with our sister event, MCM Comic Con in London, to bring you New York Comic Con's Metaverse, our new online portal dedicated to delivering pop culture experiences, right into your homes NYCC weekend, October 8-11. We are partnering with YouTube to bring to life four days of incredible content from the biggest studios, publishers and creators in the business.” It probably comes as no surprise that the in-person event was cancelled - it would be more surprising, frankly, if they just pushed it back to - say - December. But it is disappointing. Our first contact in Bozeman, Montana might not have happened if the Vulcans spent five minutes with an Earth history textbook. But given the chance, would you undo humanity’s achievements to annul its sins? And would you want the RomuLannisters involved? No really, would you? Star Trek Timelines’ upcoming Mega-Event, “The Capitoline Wolf,'' opens a strange new chapter in human/Romulan relations. During the Enterprise-themed event, players will see the history of an alternate Earth shaped by ancient Romulan influence–for good or for ill–and decide if humans should ever change. The event begins on August 13th with the “Cultural Property” Skirmish Event, with more details to follow. And look, we’re not saying it was aliens–Disruptor Beam is saying it was aliens. The Continuing Bundle Captains, there are approximately 7 days left to purchase Modiphius Entertainment’s Star Trek Adventures RPG Book Bundle and support the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Modiphius Takes The Long Road Whether you’ve been playing Modiphius Entertainment’s Star Trek Adventures from the start, or you’ve just been enlisted to Starfleet by that Humble Bundle, you might be excited by some other news this week. At least, you’ll be excited if you’ve got Faith. Faith of the Heart. That’s right, the NX-01 Enterprise and her famous crew have joined Star Trek Adventures with the latest PDF add-on for the game. The new release includes character sheets for everyone from Captain Jonathan Archer to Doctor Phlox, plus Andorian Commander Thy’lek Shran. It also brings you the statistics for the NX-01 U.S.S. Enterprise herself.  So if your tabletop bridge crew is ready for a long road to the 22nd century, Trek out the new character pack. Games and Online Harassment Hotline Launch Captains, this next Gaming News story isn’t about any new game or new event in one of our favorite games. Instead, we want to share a different story that came to our attention this week. It’s a story that we hope will be helpful to some of you, maybe even important.  As reported recently by Ars Technica, and shared with us by Sue fromWomen At Warp, a new type of text-based hotline has launched for gamers. It’s called the Games and Online Harassment Hotline, and their mission is to offer free emotional support and help resources to gamers and game developers struggling with the unique issues common to the industry. Initially conceived by Feminist Frequency’s Anita Sarkeesian, the hotline is solely purposed to offering a listening ear and support to anyone in gaming who might need it. As Sarkeesian puts it,  It's for people who make and play games. Streamer, competitor, press, fan, my mom who plays Candy Crush. There's no gatekeeping here, no test to get into our boundaries. If you're part of our space, we're here for you… Burnt out by crunch. Isolated, lonely, or depressed. Facing online harassment. Abuse. Afraid that you have caused harm and want a place to talk that out. Worried for your friends or colleagues. We're a space you can come to and talk some of that through.   If you need to talk with someone about struggles you’re experiencing in the gaming sphere, you can start by texting “SUPPORT” to 23368 anywhere in the USA. Between 4pm and 7pm Pacific, weekdays, they’ll reply to your text. After a few automated questions, you’ll get connected to a trained agent who will listen and offer helpful resources if they can.

It was dumped in favor of Hawley's pitch due to the high price tag that went along with bringing back the Kelvin-crew, but according to Deadline it ”might have the cleanest path toward a relaunch, with an emphasis on boosting overseas gross numbers which have never been the franchise's strong suit. These decisions will take place over the next few weeks.” So stay tuned for the next chapter of this ongoing saga! We Learn More About Star Trekantino Quentin Tarantino once said “THE GOOD IDEAS WILL SURVIVE.”. Let's hope that's true, because it feels like THIS idea has been around for a long time. THIS idea, of course, is the Tarantino helmed Star Trek film - Star Trekantino. This weeks Deadline piece shed some light on the on-again-off-again film, including it's feasibility and - more interestingly - its plot. Tarantino told Deadline in January of this year ”I think they might make that movie, but I just don't think I'm going to direct it. It's a good idea. They should definitely do it and I'll be happy to come in and give them some notes on the first rough cut.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2eRJozOZa0 Star Trek Prodigy Gets a Director/Co-Executive Producer Heading back to the small screen, Star Trek's upcoming Nickelodeon offering - Star Trek: Prodigy - has a new creative lead - Ben Hibon. Ramsey Naito of Nickelodeon group said of the addition ”Ben's contributions to the world of animation are immeasurable, and we are so lucky to have his vision and creative genius on Star Trek: Prodigy. As an incredible storyteller and a world builder with a distinct vision, his original approach paired with this beloved property will bring the characters to life in a whole new way,” Hibon also expressed his excitement, saying in a release ”Getting the chance to work on an IP like Star Trek has been an incredible opportunity, particularly when partnered with the talented teams at Nickelodeon, CBS and Secret Hideout – who have been pushing the boundaries of what animation and serialized storytelling for younger audiences can deliver,” For another look at Ben Hibon's work, we suggest trekking out “Codehunters”. We'll have a link in our show notes, but as a heads up Viewer discretion is advised. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmeP1YkaeTo NYCC ReedPop Statement Stop spreadin' the germs, I'm wearing a mask Don't want to be a part of it New York, Comic Con Or not. If your vagabond shoes were longing to stray through the very heart of  the Javitt center this October - to celebrate ReedPop's New York Comic Con 2020 - you'll have to find another approach to melt away your little-town blues. New York Comic Con is cancelled - sort of. In a statement released on their website, ReedPop said in part ”NYCC doesn't stop just because we can't do what we've done in the past. Instead, we look to the future: We may not be meeting in the queue hall each morning, but we're excited to join forces with our sister event, MCM Comic Con in London, to bring you New York Comic Con's Metaverse, our new online portal dedicated to delivering pop culture experiences, right into your homes NYCC weekend, October 8-11. We are partnering with YouTube to bring to life four days of incredible content from the biggest studios, publishers and creators in the business.” It probably comes as no surprise that the in-person event was cancelled - it would be more surprising, frankly, if they just pushed it back to - say - December. But it is disappointing. For a full list of guests, follow our link in the show notes Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds Star Trek Timelines: “The Capitoline Wolf” Mega-Event Star Trek: The Next Generation began the franchise's new era with a damning observation: for all it protests otherwise, humanity is a grievously savage race. Our first contact in Bozeman, Montana might not have happened if the Vulcans spent five minutes with an Earth history textbook. But given the chance, would you undo humanity's achievements to annul its sins? And would you want the RomuLannisters involved? No really, would you? Star Trek Timelines' upcoming Mega-Event, “The Capitoline Wolf,'' opens a strange new chapter in human/Romulan relations. During the Enterprise-themed event, players will see the history of an alternate Earth shaped by ancient Romulan influence–for good or for ill–and decide if humans should ever change. The event begins on August 13th with the “Cultural Property” Skirmish Event, with more details to follow. And look, we're not saying it was aliens–Disruptor Beam is saying it was aliens. The Continuing Bundle Captains, there are approximately 7 days left to purchase Modiphius Entertainment's Star Trek Adventures RPG Book Bundle and support the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. As of writing the Bundle has raised $201,005.54 from 12,600 purchases. Modiphius Takes The Long Road Whether you've been playing Modiphius Entertainment's Star Trek Adventures from the start, or you've just been enlisted to Starfleet by that Humble Bundle, you might be excited by some other news this week. At least, you'll be excited if you've got Faith. Faith of the Heart. That's right, the NX-01 Enterprise and her famous crew have joined Star Trek Adventures with the latest PDF add-on for the game. The new release includes character sheets for everyone from Captain Jonathan Archer to Doctor Phlox, plus Andorian Commander Thy'lek Shran. It also brings you the statistics for the NX-01 U.S.S. Enterprise herself.  So if your tabletop bridge crew is ready for a long road to the 22nd century, Trek out the new character pack. Games and Online Harassment Hotline Launch Captains, this next Gaming News story isn't about any new game or new event in one of our favorite games. Instead, we want to share a different story that came to our attention this week. It's a story that we hope will be helpful to some of you, maybe even important.  As reported recently by Ars Technica, and shared with us by Sue fromWomen At Warp, a new type of text-based hotline has launched for gamers. It's called the Games and Online Harassment Hotline, and their mission is to offer free emotional support and help resources to gamers and game developers struggling with the unique issues common to the industry. Initially conceived by Feminist Frequency's Anita Sarkeesian, the hotline is solely purposed to offering a listening ear and support to anyone in gaming who might need it. If you need to talk with someone about struggles you're experiencing in the gaming sphere, you can start by texting “SUPPORT” to 23368 anywhere in the USA. Between 4pm and 7pm Pacific, weekdays, they'll reply to your text. After a few automated questions, you'll get connected to a trained agent who will listen and offer helpful resources if they can.

TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan James McAvoy Wants to be Picard If you could pick ANY actor to play young-Jean-Luc Picard, who would it be? David Tristan Birkin played a de-aged Picard in the TNG episode “Rascals” and Tom Hardy had a go at Picard's dastardly clone in the forgettable “Star Trek: Nemesis”.  Corey Stoll from “House of Cards” has the look and David Tennent of “Dr. Who” has the accent. BUT - according to one Picard-hopeful, HE is the only choice. Who would that be?  Young-Professor X portrayer, James McAvoy! Sitting down virtually with Late Night host Jimmy Fallon, James McAvoy responded to the question of whether or not he would consider playing a young Picard and later painted a picture with his words regarding his scent - and Sir Patrick Stewart's face. Have a look at the video below to see what we mean. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf1zYk8D8hc&start=179 “Lower Decks” Hypes for Release All aboard, the “Lower Decks” Hype-train is leaving the station! Star Trek's first animated series in 46 years is set to debut on August 6th, and the folks at CBS want the world to know about it. Last week, we got our first look at the trailer for the series - which we talked about in episode 469 of Priority One - and this week, we get four new screenshots - and a new recurring character announcement! On July 15th, three of the four new photos were released through fan sites like Trekmovie and Trekcore, and feature our scrappy heroes at work and at play. The fourth screenshot came on July 20th, with the exclusive Deadline announcement that “Black Monday's” Paul Scheer would play Lt. Commander Andy Billups, the chief engineer on the USS Cerritos. In the still, we see the chief engineer, a smiling middle-aged man with a mustache, poking away at an engineering console while speaking to Ensign Rutherford. In regards to Scheer, the actor-comedian isn't new to voiceover work, having done voices for Cartoon Network's “Adventure Time” and Netflix's decidedly-adult “Big Mouth”, as well as Fox's Seth McFarlane helmed “American Dad” among others. Star Trek: Discovery at Virtual Trek Con The cancellation or postponement of conventions in 2020 due to Covid-19 is a thing, but it has started a bit of a movement - the Virtual Con. This week starting on July 15, Deep Space Nine Star and 7th Rule Podcast host Cirroc Lofton spearheaded the free Virtual Trek Con - a five day “convention” that hosted stars and crew from across the Star Trek multiverse. On Sunday July 19th, Moderator Ryan Husk sat down with stars of “Star Trek: Discovery”, and though no big spoilers were dished, we did get a few interesting nuggets for the dipping. Husk was joined by Doug Jones, as well as Linus' David Benjamin Tomlinson, Siranna's Hannah Spear, and Dr. Pollard's Raven Dauda. In an exchange with David Tomlinson - who has played Klingons and Kelpians among others - Doug Jones revealed that everyone's favorite Saurian will be back for season 3. In speaking about Linus's eating habits, Tomlinson and Jones tease a little about Linus's screen time. Hannah Spear, who plays Saru's sister Siranna, MAY HAVE hinted that Siranna could return in another iteration of Star Trek - think Strange New Worlds or Section 31.  The panel is just under an hour, and really highlights the love all of the people involved with Discovery share for one another. You'll also get some insight into how Siranna's character was created, Tomlinson's love of prosthetics, and how Raven Dauda would love to be the Chief Medical Officer of Discovery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kLwF1sHyKQ Trek Stars Outside of Trek It's been a while since we've had some new Star Trek. We're not complaining - really - but the final episode of Picard aired back in March and since then - nothing. Well this week saw a bunch of news cross our feed about Star Trek stars in other upcoming roles or mediums, so we figured we'd share them with you now so that you have them for, you know, the next five month drought. A new documentary featuring Nichelle Nichols' role in NASA's recruiting program - which focus on women and people of color - has struck a distribution deal with Shout! Studios. The film, titled “Woman in Motion”, will feature interviews with friends, colleagues, experts, and Star Trek stars. It's expected to release in 2021. If you're itching for something this moment, and are in the mood for a bit of a downer, HBO's documentary Showbiz Kids is out now - with stories from Wesley Crusher himself, Wil Wheaton. According to HBO's website description ”Showbiz Kids offers an unvarnished look at the high-risk, high-reward business of working as a child actor in the entertainment industry. Written and directed by former child actor Alex Winter (Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, The Panama Papers), the film chronicles the shared experiences of prominent former child stars and the personal and professional price of fame and failure on a child.” Looking for something a little lighter and don't mind waiting about a week? The long-awaited “Unbelievable!!!!!” is set for it's streaming release on August 1st. The Sci-Fi comedy sports a “Team America” style marionette, Snoop Dogg - and over FORTY Star Trek alumni! To go along with the release,  there will be events all day - we'll post a link in the show notes if you want to trek them out. And finally, a little casting news, Star Trek's Kelvin Spock - Zachary Quinto - has been cast in the Amazon Prime animated series “Invincible”. Based on the graphical novel of the same name, the story follows the son of Earth's greatest Superhero. As the young man begins to manifest powers, he starts his own adventures, to varying degrees of success. Quinto will play a superhero named Robot, an ally to the protagonist Mark Grayson. “Invincible” is from the same author that wrote “The Walking Dead” graphic novels, and the series is set for release at the end of 2020. So there you have it. Bookmark our show notes so you don't forget! The Continuing Mission, With Terms & Conditions By now Star Trek Timelines players have no doubt been confronted with Some Kind of In-Game Pop-up Anomaly, asking them to accept publisher Tilting Point's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. On July 17 Wicked Realms announced the switch from former owner Disruptor Beam's terms, noting that players would have to accept the terms to continue playing. The post acknowledges recent concerns with the game's Offer Wall feature, and a review of what advertising partner ironSource's SDK collects when the game is launched on Android (remember, the Offer Wall is indefinitely gone from iOS). However, any offers you-the-player accept via the Offer Wall “will take place outside of the game and outside the control of Tilting Point or ironSource, and you may be requested to share additional information on a voluntary basis to the third party managing that offer, and such information will be subject to that third party's privacy policy”. For her part, she says that the show is using a Zoom-based writer's room which is surprisingly getting more accomplished, at a faster pace, than before. Working from home is perhaps something that writers of an apocalypse-themed show were uniquely prepared for, but Morgan's comments are illuminating and the unexpectedly positive changes could have ramifications for how TWD, if not television in general, proceeds once this crisis is over. Kirkman believes he is owed, and is suing for, $690,000. This per TMZ, who managed to get an exclusive first look at some of the legal documents: TMZ uses extremely informal language, but the article seems to suggest that Kirkman is suing not a jury trial, but rather an injunction forcing Disruptor Beam to make good on their delinquent payments. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mattsager/support

This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Do you plan on using the Vulcan Salute as your new DEFACTO greeting? Have you been using it already? AND CQ: What do you think a new summer event Risian Science Ship should look like? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Michael Chabon Heads Back To - Or Stays On - Instagram Just as he has the previous two weeks, Picard season 1 showrunner - Michael Chabon - answered fans burning questions on Instagram Live. As in previous iterations of the quick-scrolling Q&A, Chabon had some fun things to say, some insightful thoughts, and a ton of information about Star Trek's newest series. Be advised, from this point forward - spoilers a-plenty are in bound. As you'd likely guess, many questions arose about this week's guest stars - Riker and Troi. When asked about Riker's reserve status, Chabon responded ”He retired from active duty when he was still captain of the *Titan*. Were he ever to be called up to active service, he would presumably retain that rank.”. Chabon later told a fan that much of Riker and Troi's backstory never made it to the screen, and the Titan was referenced but later dropped for reasons Chabon could not recall. In regards to why Riker and Troi left active duty, Chabon said ”Riker and Troi made the obvious but painful choice to go on inactive states and move to Nepenthe, for the sake of their family and their child's life” In regards to why Emergency Holograms were not included in the Synth Ban, Chabon said ”It was certainly debated by Federation policy makers, but a distinction was drawn, possibly because some failsafes and limitations had already been put in place, in the wake of the experience with *Voyager*'s Doctor.” Finally, Chabon explained the killing of Hugh...sort of One of the stories we are telling in this season on Picard is a story about the tragedy of being Borg, or more precisely, of being assimilated and then, even more poignantly, being restored from assimilation and struggling forever after with assimilation's traumatic legacy. In a very unique way, Hugh was able to recontextualize his trauma into something that brought healing and hope to others, which gave purpose and brought healing to himself. But his predicament, like that of all former Borg-as he explained to Picard in episode 106-remained essentially tragic, and tragically is how he dies, cut down by someone who sees him as a disgusting monster at the moment when he makes his boldest claim to dignity and freedom. Michael Chabon Talks Nepenthe Chabon doesn't only do it for the Insta - Q&A's that is. He also sat down with The Hollywood Reporter this week to talk Picard, and more specifically, “Nepenthe”. Chabon spoke about the reunion of Picard and the Troi-Riker's, and about the tense moment Picard had with Deanna ”When you're in the scene, and knowing who [Riker and Troi] are, and who they have been, and trying to project them forward into a narrative that feels believable — and incorporate some of the themes of this show, like reckoning with the past, if you're a fan of the show, this interaction — it's necessary. It's not expected, but it's important to the character of Picard to have this moment.” He continues ”When someone calls you out on your [EXPLETIVE] like that? On the things you're dealing with and not acknowledging that you should acknowledge? To me, that's the definition of a friend” Chabon also admitted to THR that Hugh, and another former Borg - Icheb, were not originally planned for the series. The Showrunner said of Hugh ”The initial germ of having Hugh involved, and that he would die came from the natural discussions of, what does it mean to have been Borg? So once we sort of committed to a big part of our season being about the lives of former Borg — Ex Bs, as we call them — and exploring how their lives are traumatized [from that experience], how they have or have not dealt with that trauma, and how they remain these objects of fear and hatred even though they were victimized by the Borg, to put Hugh in the center of that lead to what felt like a dramatic way to service the character's end.” Jonathan Del Arco On Hugh's Death Michael Chabon wasn't the only Star Trek insider to defend the death of our beloved Hugh. Jonathan Del Arco, the man behind the cybernetics, sat down with Jordan Hoffman to discuss Hugh's ultimate sacrifice. “Well, it's really important in the show - in the world. Because the world of the show is dystopian, and very few people are willing to put themselves on the line for each other. There's a need for that sort of connectivity and self sacrifice. So honored to have died for Picard.” Del Arco went on to explain how the news of Hugh's demise affected the way the actor saw the role, saying “Actually it was very liberating. [...] When you start a new series, you're always trying to like - not play it safe - but you're trying to do things that are not going to upset anybody. And actually this kind of blew the lid off that for me as an actor, and I was just like ‘I'm just going to go for it' and really making bold choices, as an actor. So it was a really fun experiment that way.” For a link to the StarTrek.com interview, trek out our show notes! Star Trek VS The Covid-19 Virus With the increasing risk of Covid-19, more colloquially known as the Coronavirus, the US Center for Disease Control has issued a few tips on how to protect yourself - including avoiding close contact with others and proper handwashing techniques...and Star Trek may be able to help with both! On March 2nd, former presidential hopeful and founder of “Humanity Forward” Andrew Yang tweeted a photo of Leonard Nimoy's Spock doing the Vulcan salute, saying “I hate to say this - I'm not much of a germophobe myself - but we might want to work on a personal greeting that doesn't involve physical contact.”. Sound crazy? The US Government doesn't think so. In a closed door meeting of the House Democratic caucus on Tuesday morning, an attending physician suggested the avoidance of touching - and offered the Vulcan Salute as an alternative . From the CNN article /”Hand-to-hand contact is to be avoided, the physician said. The physician encouraged lawmakers to use the "Star Trek" greeting, according to Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota, though he noted with a laugh he was unable to separate his fingers to properly make the gesture”. Okay, so we've avoided the close contact thing...but what about proper handwashing? Well, according to the CDC, you should be washing your hands often - and for at least 20 seconds. You know what else takes about 20 seconds? Quoting the opening to Star Trek. The brilliant realization was tweeted out by our friends at Roddenberry, with the caption ”We didn't make it up. #roddenberry #coronavirus”. So wash your hands until you get to “Where No One Has Gone Before”! Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover STO Legendary Bundle News There's good bundle news and there's bad bundle news, Captains.  Bad news - the Star Trek Online Legendary +Starship Bundle is no longer available for purchase by PC players. For those who purchased the bundle already, you'll still be able to reclaim the ships from the C-Store. For those who did not, you'll have to wait for the ships or the bundle to eventually return. Good news - if you're a console STO player, you'll be able to purchase the Legendary Starship Bundle yourself in less than a month. In a Twitter post dated March 8th, Star Trek Online announced the bundle would hit consoles in exactly 30 days. So save up those strips of Gold-Pressed Latinum, and get your best builds ready to go, console Captains. Summer Ship Development, Live on Camera! On Tuesday morning, Ambassador Kael posted an interesting new article to the STO News blog. With the 2020 Summer Event already on the team's mind, they've decided to let players in on the creative process. On four weekly community live streams between March 11th and April 1st, members of the Cryptic development team will appear on-stream. As Kael's blog says, "They'll be coached by a member of our ship design team or our concept artist, and all four of them will be assigned the same basic concept: a Risian Science Ship. For the next two hours, they'll hand draw a design for a ship based on that concept." The schedule of team members appearing will be: March 11th - Senior Environment Artist Nick Duguid March 18th - Test Analyst Christian Griffith March 25th - Senior Content Designer Jesse Heinig April 1st - Systems Designer Jonathan Herlache Once the concept designs are all completed, the four drawings will be presented to players to vote on their favorite. Then one more live stream will be dedicated to watching official Concept Artist Hector Ortiz turn the winner into a finalized Star Trek Online ship concept drawing. Tune in to those weekly livestreams on Cryptic Studios' Twitch channel at “twitch.tv/CrypticStudios”. PRIORITY ONE ARMADA NEWS Join us for TFO Thursday - each Thursday we team up with other Armada members to earn marks and dilithium.  Epsilon Fleet - kicked off it's first Tier V colony upgrade. The House of Martok 3rd Tier V Colony is available - just needs provisions and dilithium. WEEKLY TOP TIP Suppose you've been playing the game for a good while now, and you've finally hit Tier 6 completion in at least a handful of those Reputations. You're a little bored, and you'd like to spice up the game with a fun new ship… but you don't want to spend your cash or convert your Dilithium stash to Zen. You don't even really care all that much about a new ship trait, because the trait on the ship you want won't fit your build. All you've got to do is remember to visit the Ship Vendor in your favorite social hub. In the Ship Vendor UI, just filter the ship list to rank “Fleet - Tier 6”. Pick out a T6 Fleet ship you're itching to try.  Make sure you've claimed at least 5 Fleet Ship Modules as T6 Reputation rewards, for 100 rep marks each. Then go ahead and buy that T6 Fleet ship for just 20,000 Fleet Credits, plus your 5 Fleet Ship Modules. Since the modules obtained as Rep rewards are Character bound, they're only useful for Fleet Ship purchases, anyway. And 13 modules is more than most Captains will need to upgrade their favorite C-Store ships to Fleet standard. Remember, of course, that Fleet ships purchased through the Ship Vendor are not account-wide unlocks -- and you won't enjoy their maxed mastery trait. But it's a great way to try out that one ship you've always been curious about without getting too invested. Other Gaming News Tilting Point Buys Timelines Wait! Timelines change imminent! According to a Press Release on VentureBeat.com, mobile game operator Tilting Point has acquired the Star Trek: Timelines title from Disruptor Beam. In support of the new acquisition, Tilting Point announced the formation of a new studio, Wicked Realm Games, along with the hiring of 19 team members from Disruptor Beam. Meanwhile, Disruptor Beam will focus on its proprietary free-to-play gaming engine.  Tilting Point has been partnered with Disruptor Beam on Timelines since offering user acquisition funding in 2017. TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Michael Chabon Heads Back To - Or Stays On - Instagram Just as he has the previous two weeks, Picard season 1 showrunner - Michael Chabon - answered fans burning questions on Instagram Live. As in previous iterations of the quick-scrolling Q&A, Chabon had some fun things to say, some insightful thoughts, and a ton of information about Star Trek’s newest series. Be advised, from this point forward - spoilers a-plenty are in bound. As you’d likely guess, many questions arose about this week's guest stars - Riker and Troi. When asked about Riker’s reserve status, Chabon responded ”He retired from active duty when he was still captain of the *Titan*. Were he ever to be called up to active service, he would presumably retain that rank.”. Chabon later told a fan that much of Riker and Troi’s backstory never made it to the screen, and the Titan was referenced but later dropped for reasons Chabon could not recall. Star Trek: Timelines Hello and welcome to another episode of There Are Four Mics: A Star Trek Podcast. I am your host, Joe Heiser. We weren’t able to get together and record an episode discussing Enterprise for this week; so we thought we’d take the opportunity to try something a little different. The Star Trek universe is much more than just the TV shows and movies, especially with the Star Trek vacuum that was created after the end of Enterprise in 2004. So I’m talking books, graphic novels, and video games. In this series, we’re specifically going to take a look at one of the many many Star Trek video games floating around out there. I’m sure I won’t be inciting much debate if I suggest that most Star Trek games have traditionally seemed rather -- Unremarkable. But it’s my hope that as I sift through the titles and give each game a fair chance, I’ll uncover more than a few that do the Star Trek universe justice. If you have recommendations going forward, please, let me know! Send us a tweet @thereare4mics or an email to contact@therearefourmics.com The most recent release seems as good a place to start as any. Star Trek: Timelines. A free to play strategy game available on Android, iOS, and through Facebook. Star Trek: Timelines was developed by Disruptor Beam and released in 2016. Disruptor Beam previously released Game of Thrones: Ascent. Another mobile and browser based free to play strategy game. Before we get started. Free to play is a polarizing concept. The game utilizes many of the classic components of a free to play game that we’ve come to expect: special currency, rare or specialty items, set waiting times for certain aspects of gameplay, advertisements for “special offers”, etc.. And while generally I’m suspicious of titles that rely on this form of revenue, I must say I was impressed with the amount of content I got without feeling pressured to buy in to keep the good times rolling. So if you were ready to dismiss the game based on “free-to-play” alone, I’d stick around and hear what else it has to offer. A not so brief overview Star Trek: Timelines wastes no energy and immediately drops you into the thick of things. Right out of the gate you adopt the role of a captain of your own starship. You’re in the middle of investigating an anomaly alongside a Romulan Warbird commanded by Captain Tomalak. Q, with original voice acting by John de Lancie, crashes the party and warns you that Starfleet may be out of its depth with this one. As if to prove his point, several ships suddenly appear, including none other than the NCC-1701 Enterprise, commanded by a very confused Captain Kirk who is beamed to your vessel. Tomalak takes this as some sort of ploy and you immediately enter into a space battle, something you’ll be doing a lot through the game. You’re given a taste of character abilities as you use Kirk and Spock to boost your ship’s stats, turning the battle to your advantage and allowing you to eventually destroy the Romulan Warbird. Another Warbird decloaks, and destroys the Enterprise. Kirk is distraught, but after Q sends the Warbird to Borg space as penance, he assures Kirk that yes, while his crew are dead, there are countless other versions scattered through time. Q further explains that the timelines and realities of the universe have become intermingled. People, planets, ships from across all times and universes are converging and vying for space. While he trusts you to take care of the warping around and starship battles, he intends to get to the bottom of this and sort it out. You’re given a set of prologue missions to complete and then finally engage with the main story. Now, this opening feels very much like an episode’s cold open. We’re dropped into a situation and given a mystery that needs resolving. A bunch of things happen that we don’t really understand and then we’re whisked away into the proper story to find our footing in this new and dangerous galaxy. Gameplay The main game is divided into different episodes, each comprised of a dozen or more missions. For instance, Episode One deals largely with the Klingons and the Augments, the followers of Khan Noonien Singh for the uninitiated. Are you more sympathetic towards the Klingons? Side with them in conversation, complete more Klingon missions, and ultimately, support them in achieving their final aims for the episode. All of which will influence the direction and control of the region. The entire game is divided up like this, Factions vying for power while you support one side or the other. Each mission awards you with items and credits, which can be used in purchasing a chance for more items, characters, and ship blueprints. Ship blueprints being let you upgrade your ship to increase its stats or even build new ships. The missions come in two flavors: Away Missions, and Starship Battles. For Away Missions you select a certain number of crew according to their listed skills and traits. You encounter a set number of challenges, each emphasizing a specific skill. For instance, if you see there will be some demand for the Medicine skill you might consider throwing in Dr. Phlox. Each challenge can be faced multiple ways, and it's up to you to determine who has the best chance of success, or what is more in line with the kind of captain you want to be. If you are particularly good at selecting crew members with appropriate skills and traits, that’ll work in your favor by adding a bonus to your ability to complete the challenge. A challenge of 25 needs to be met by a crewmember whose skills will add up to 25 after the various bonuses are applied. As you use each crew member they will level up, increasing their skills and making each challenge easier. Each crew member can also be outfitted with specific items to increase these abilities. Starship Battles are a bit different and largely take care of themselves. Your ship will automatically fire and evade, your job is to apply the bonuses your selected crew can offer. For instance, Travis Mayweather can increase your ship’s maneuverability temporarily, making it harder for the enemy to hit. Outside of the main story there are standalone “Distress Call” missions you can complete. These operate much like the episode specific missions but don’t necessarily affect events unfolding in the galaxy. There are a lot of elements blended into Star Trek: Timelines that I really enjoy. There’s a certain RPG aspect to it. Being able to choose your responses, enhance and upgrade your starship, leveling up your crew, and siding with one faction or the other all bring some semblance of roleplay to the game. It’s not simply a matter of filling your crew roster and unleashing them upon each mission, there needs to be a level of strategy and reason behind your choices. The game boasts over 330 recruitable characters at this moment. More having been added since the game’s initial launch; a trend likely to continue. Honestly, this aspect is quite fun to me. While most are variants of the same character, Jazz Musician Odo or Boxing Chakotay, for example, it’s reminiscent of collecting those Star Trek action figures that used to be released years ago. The ability to collect all of these characters and ships is certainly dependent on how much money you’re willing to spend. The ingame currency is referred to as Dilithium, which can be bought in packs of various sizes. You’re allotted a certain number of free chances depending on missions completed, but its obvious that if you were to rely on these free modes of resource gathering it could take you ages to get even the next level ship. In my 5-10 hours of play, I haven’t felt an overwhelming need to spend money, but if I were committed to collecting or progressing quickly, I can see why I’d want to. And you can be sure they give you ample opportunity to do so. One thing to note is how power hungry this game is. I mention this here because gameplay can really be hindered if the game locks up indefinitely. My phone is no spring chicken, a Nexus 6 running Android 7.0, but it’s still a good device. During starship battles especially, where 3D really comes into play, there are times when it's obvious my Nexus is struggling to keep up. Lagging interrupts the music and sound effects, and so can make for a grating experience all around, especially if you’ve got headphones in. Story The story is comprised of smaller stories contributing to the overarching theme of temporal chaos and how to handle it. You won’t find yourself wiping away tears, bursting into uproarious laughter, or aching over the ethical dilemmas, but there’s enough there to keep you going. The game continually introduces characters or their counterparts as the episodes develop, which certainly helps to keep interest and engagement up. What’s most impressive to me I suppose is that the game has enough story for me to require more than one sentence to accurately describe to someone. I don’t generally associate that with free to play mobile games, but Disruptor Beam managed to bring an original plot to Star Trek: Timelines. Graphics The graphics are pretty slick. The 3D starship battles look great for a mobile game, and each character has original art. Sometimes the character art is a bit odd in one way or another, but so many are so good that it’s easy to overlook the occasional haunting rictus or a disproportionate limb. Music I love the music. Very “Star Trek” but distinct enough to not feel pulled from any one series. Sound This is complicated. I think the sound effects are generally quite good. The problem is that many of them are obviously pulled from episodes or movies, and so don’t feel like they mesh quite the same as any original sound effects. And speaking of pulled from episodes, the handful of other characters given a voice are simply lines pulled straight from the screen. That’s not bad, per se, but it does have a soundboard quality to it. Each time I select Mayweather I hear a clip of Anthony Montgomery on some episode of Enterprise answering a hail, “Mayweather.” And the choices of line aren’t always that great. For instance, each time you select B'elanna Torres you hear “I don’t care what people think of me.” Is that really the best line B’elanna had? The most identifiably B’elanna line they could find? I’m not so sure. Voice Acting The voice acting, the original voice acting, performed by John de Lancie in the reprisal of his role as Q is fantastic. It brings a certain polish and charm to the game I’m not sure it would have otherwise. I think it’s that voice that carried me through the opening sequence of events and allowed me to successfully resist the urge to close out the app forever and find something else to do--which is the fate of many of my recently downloaded mobile games. Final Thoughts I’ve seen other reviewers call this game a labor of love. And I’d have to agree. I believe that Disruptor Beam respected the Star Trek characters, stories, and franchise as a whole and in turn, respected their target market. While not a perfect game, and perhaps not the perfect representation of what we see and feel while settling in to watch an episode of The Next Generation or Voyager, it gets as closer than many other Star Trek games I’ve played. I heartily recommend you give this game a shot. It’s free and quick to get into. In a lot of ways it doesn’t even feel appropriate to call it a mobile game simply based on the connotation of that term. I haven’t played a single session for less than thirty minutes. Hell, I like this game so much, that if I do end up buying the in-game currency, I’m not even going to feel embarrassed about it. Disruptor Beam deserves some props for this one. Final Rating: 4.5 Thank you for listening to this episode, we’ll be back soon with our full discussions of Enterprise but hope you enjoyed this little diversion. We’ll see how much traction this gets and might start making a regular series of recordings like this one. If you want to get in touch with us we’re on Twitter @thereare4mics and if you wouldn’t mind, we’d love it if you gave us a rating and review over at iTunes. Thanks again, see you next time.

NOW we understand what the phrase means! Sure, it's a dry heat, but so is a kiln, honestly. It's a good thing we spent plenty of time basking in the air conditioning at the Official Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas! Dan and Bill recap their second full day of the KHAAANN--they extol the virtues of Hash House a Go Go and talk about their first hand experience playing Star Trek Timelines! To be honest, the awesome folks at Disruptor Beam practically had to pry the iPads out of our hands after we were done test driving the game---but you can find out more about that in today's episode! Plus, hear about the screening of "The White Iris" which was presented by our friends at TrekMovie.com! (Did you know how hard it is to get a cab in Vegas anywhere other than a hotel? Yep. We found out! LOL) Join us for Episode 25 of the Trek Geeks Podcast!

Show host Chris ORegan catches up with Rich Gallup and Michael Leoncavallo of Boston, MA based Disruptor Beam The world of Game of Thrones is oddly compelling, despite it being almost relentlessly grim. Disruptor Beam have created a very unique take on the world with their creation of Game of Thrones Ascent. A social RPG, it places the player into the role of a minor lord within Westeros and they can hire mercenaries for fight for them and raise their profile within the vast and dark realm that is Game of Thrones. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/sausage/TSF_Episode20.mp3   The Sausage Factory 20 was edited by Chris O'Regan
