Dr. Duncan French has over 20 years' experience working with elite professional and Olympic athletes. Prior to joining the UFC, French was the Director of Performance Science at the University of Notre Dame. From 2005 – 2015, French was a Technical Lead for Strength and Conditioning at the English Institute of Sport. He has worked three Olympic cycles as the national lead for strength and conditioning to Great Britain Basketball and more recently Great Britain Taekwondo Olympic programs.French earned his PhD from the University of Connecticut in 2004 and has authored or co-authored over 60 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts. He is a fully accredited strength and conditioning coach with the United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA), Australian Strength and Conditioning Association (ASCA), and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Duncan French is the Vice President of the Ultimate Fighting Championships. Mixed martial arts is a sport that has had an accelerated rise into the public consciousness over the last couple of decades. It seems to have captured the imagination, created interest and intrigue about the unpredictability of the contest. And so has followed a professionalisation of the bouts, the events, and the support they receive. Duncan's focus is to provide the very best support to the fighters, sometimes supporting two fighters that are about to fight each other. We get into an interesting discussion about the ethics of aiming to help someone do a better job of hurting someone else to the point of submission or unconsciousness, versus the unhealthy neglect that would result if fighters were left to their own devices. Combat has been with us since the dawn of time – way before we were human and it was one of the earliest activities we'd call sport – and let's be realistic it's probably not going away any time soon. Duncan is a world renowned conditioning coach, rightly respected and sought after. As I fully expected from Duncan he sheds light on this territory with lucidity,  acumen and wisdom. And then, you just got to interpret it and figure out what best sits in our space which can help us.” 27:56 “It’s all about building relationships and that’s what entirely, this whole strength and conditioning thing comes back to. "The way the fight is being won is changing - strike rates are up, knockouts are down and results by decision have gone up." So says Duncan French of the UFC and the world of mixed martial arts. The Vice President of Performance at the UFC explains that what it takes to win in the UFC - so comprehensively benchmarked in this recent report - continues to evolve in a sport that has been professional for just 25 years. That is why the opening of the $14 million UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas has enabled French and his colleagues to stay on top in such a dynamic environment. He has worked three full Olympic cycles and has been the national lead for strength and conditioning for both Great Britain's taekwondo and basketball Olympics programs since 2004. A native of Warrington, Pennsylvania, McGlinchey was a second team preseason All-America selection by CBS Sports after starting every game for the Irish in 2015. Foster Award, Joe Echelle ('62). McGlinchey is set to play his 30th career game (18th start) at Notre Dame against Duke on Saturday. Segment 4 - James and Rachel talk with the 2016 recipient of the Harvey G. Foster Award, Joe Echelle ('62). Echelle, who arrived in America in 1952 after previously living in a Displaced Persons Camp in Austria during World War II, is considered the forefather of the Notre Dame men's soccer program after establishing the University's first club team in the sport in 1961. Referred to by Hall of Fame sports owner Lamar Hunt as the "Knute Rockne of Notre Dame Soccer," Echelle enjoyed a long career as a professional soccer general manager and marketing executive, and has remained a key community contributor helping grow the game of soccer in various cities in the U.S. He shares stories of his time at Notre Dame, the U.S. Army after graduation, a pair of American football kicking battles with Pro Football Hall of Famers George Blanda and Lou Groza, and more.
