Research shows that veterinarians are twice as likely as other medical professionals, and four times more likely than the general population to die by suicide.

Many people would be shocked to find out that veterinarians have one of the highest suicide rates of any profession. 1 in 6 vets have thought of suicide. This crisis is across the board affecting all generations and even vet students to a much higher degree than the average population. To combat this mental and emotional health crisis the non-profit organization Not One More Vet was formed. As I have quite a few friends who are vets and my oldest son wants to be one, I have a selfish motive on this one.Mission: NOMV will transform the status of mental wellness within the profession so veterinary professionals can survive and thrive through education, resources, and support. Dr. Mallory Preston is a graduate of both Texas A&M and Auburn University. She's been a volunteer with NOMV for years and even founded the NOMV Texas Chapter. Her dad is also a vet so she grew up in his clinic, but now practices in the Houston area. In preparation of Vet Tech Appreciation Week next week, we couldn't think of a better tribute to all of the professionals in the veterinary industry than to replay one of our favorite episodes of the past year. Ellen Carozza is a Licensed Veterinary Technician since 1996 who has worked exclusively with feline patients since 2002, Ellen (The CAT LVT)  currently resides at NOVA CAT CLINIC in Arlington, VA and is one of the founders of the Chris Griffey Memorial Feline Foundation, a 501(c)3 dedicated to the critical feline neonate and pediatric cases.In addition to her full time career as a Licensed Veterinary Technician, and her “mother of kittens'' role with the foundation, she also lectures on the veterinary circuit. Known for her no-nonsense attitude and practical methods of teaching, Ellen has co-authored several guidelines with the American Association of Feline Practitioners as well as the International Society of Feline Medicine. When Dunbar coughed up blood in October 2019, Tara knew things were about to get rough. He was soon diagnosed with undifferentiated pulmonary carcinoma with lymph node involvement. But thanks to the dedication of his humans and a great pet health insurance policy, Dunbar has been able to get the treatments he needed. Through surgery and chemotherapy, Dunbar has always been happy and outgoing, lovingly referred to as “the mayor” by his veterinarian Kate Berlin. So when the cancer reared its head again in early 2021, they resumed the fight. Dunbar is now 12 years old, and sweet as ever. Veterinarians are nearly three times more likely than the general public to die by suicide, and one in six has contemplated taking their life, according to recent studies. The industry has never been under more stress: During the pandemic, pet ownership in the United States rose by 70% and the demand for veterinary assistance has risen exponentially. But many veterinarians are leaving the profession because of intense workloads, crushing student debt, hostile pet owners, and the trauma of euthanizing animals they've cared for from cradle to grave. Do you like it or hate it when your dog wants to jump up on you when they greet you? Why do dogs want to jump up on people anyway? There are two reasons I'll tell you about. If you want to stop the behavior teach your dog the way you would prefer them to greet you.  When we take our pets to the vet because they are sick or injured we are feeling fear and love and anguished hope that they will be okay, plus worry and possible stress about the costs it will take to return them quickly to health.   That's a lot of emotion we bring to the examining table. What about your vet? Do they also experience the stress you are feeling?   The answer is yes.  And it can take a fatal toll on these doctors who do so much to help your pets. My guest, Sandy Weaver, is the author of the book, Happy Vet, Happy Pet: Caring for Your Pet's caregiver and the Program director of the Center for Workplace Happiness, whose mission is to reduce the suicide rate in the vet community. She will tell you three easy things you can do to help and care for your vet that can make a profound difference for their lives. While COVID cooped up many people in their homes, veterinary professionals have been in the hospitals, clinics, and field caring for animals. For veterinary professionals, the "COVID 20" means something different -- it's the extra 20 animals they squeezed in for an exam on any given day!   Working in a highly demanding and giving profession comes with a high cost for many vets -- the time for their self-care often comes last.    The Clinic to 5K Run is for veterinarians (and everyone else) to help themselves shake off the lingering effects of COVID.
