Furthermore, I will reveal to you any personal investments I have in the investments mentioned herein. Additionally, quotes about individual companies are brief. Please go to this podcast's webpage for links to the actual articles for more company and stock information. Also, some companies might be covered more than once and there are also 13 article links below that time didn't allow me to review them here. ------------------------------------------------------------- Top 10: ESG Stocks to Consider in 2024 I'm beginning this episode with an article titled Top 10: ESG Stocks to Consider in 2024. It's by Kate Birch and found on sustainabilitymag.com. Here are a few quotes by Ms. Birch on each of her picks. “1. Nvidia MSCI Rating: AAA The microchip megastar is one of the biggest beneficiaries of the artificial intelligence boom… The company has built what looks like an unassailable lead in the AI race, accounting for more than 70% of AI chip sales and widely recognised as the best, not just the biggest… MSCI finds that Nvidia – when the chips are down – could do better when it comes to corporate governance. 2. Microsoft MSCI Rating: AAA Microsoft is another tech giant… getting high on AI. Savvy investment in ChatGPT's creator OpenAI has put Microsoft in pole position… Microsoft is working toward 100% renewable energy by 2025, carbon negative by 2030, and has famously set out to offset all historical carbon emissions since it was formed in 1975 by 2050. 3. Best Buy MSCI Rating: AAA The tech retail giant which has more than 1,000 stores in the US and Canada… The company has pledged to be carbon neutral by 2040 and has already reduced carbon emissions by two thirds since 2009. Barron's has named Best Buy in the 100 Most Sustainable US Companies for six years running, this year taking 7th position. 4. Adobe MSCI Rating: AAA An industry standard software for the creative industries – from design to video editing… The company has set a goal of sourcing 100% renewable energy by 2035. 5. Intuit MSCI Rating: AAA Intuit… has been praised by MSCI for its corporate governance, human capital development, and carbon emissions. You've probably heard of Intuit thanks to its accounting software QuickBooks, and it's the company behind Mailchimp and Credit Karma too. 6. Idexx MSCI Rating: AAA Most well known as a company that helps pets live longer, healthier lives via diagnostics and tech innovations, Idexx products help ensure the safety of milk and water around the world – for humans too. Listed in the S&P 500, Idexx employs 11,000 people and has customers in more than 175 countries and territories. 7. Lam Research MSCI Rating: AAA Lam makes equipment that makes the semiconductors we all rely on, and business is booming. Lam is adopting sustainability across its organisation as it aims to reach net zero by 2050 and use 100% renewable energy by 2030. 8. Salesforce MSCI Rating: AA Everyone has surely heard of Salesforce – the cloud-based software that handles customer relationship management (CRM) and applications focused on sales and customer service… Pre-pandemic, Salesforce was ranked AAA but that dropped to AA in November 2020 and that is where it remains… MSCI says it… is seen as a laggard when it comes to corporate behaviour. 9. POOLCORP MSCI Rating: AA Pool manufactures equipment and machinery for swimming pools, and is the largest such company in the world… Pool was upgraded from an A to AA in 2019 in recognition of efforts made to be more sustainable, especially when it comes to labour management, where MSCI says it is a leader. 10. Cadence MSCI Rating: AA MSCI does not recognise it as an ESG Laggard in any of its criteria. However, Cadence misses out on the highest ranking as it is, well, bang average on too many criteria, including carbon emissions and human capital development.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- America's Most Responsible Companies 2024 The next article is another ranking. It's titled America's Most Responsible Companies 2024. The cover article is by Nancy Cooper and seen on newsweek.com. Here are a few quotes by Ms. Cooper. “This year, we award 600 of the largest corporations in the United States, up from 500 in 2022. While that increase is noteworthy, even more so is the fact that the company in this year's 600th spot has a higher score than last year's 500th. It is also worth mentioning that 243 companies on the list have placed for at least four consecutive years, with 156 earning a spot for all five years… This year's top overall position is held by Merck (MRK) having an impressive score of 92 out of 100, with Xylem (XYL) following closely at 91.3 and HP (HPQ), which held the No. 1 position for the previous four years, maintaining a solid presence in third with a score of 90.3. Three companies stand out for scoring 100 in one of the three ESG pillars: Dell (DELL), Entergy (ETR) and Merck.'” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- 7 Best Solar Stocks to Buy Now Next, back to a familiar favorite sector with this article titled 7 Best Solar Stocks to Buy Now. It's by Jeff Reeves and appeared on money.usnews.com. Now some quotes from Mr. Reeves on his recommendations. “1. Array Technologies Inc. (ARRY) Array provides technology solutions that support solar array efficiency by moving panels to track the sun across the sky. This includes both the physical rigs as well as proprietary software that points them in the right direction at the right time… Average analyst estimates call for earnings per share to rise from $1.03 per share in 2023 to $1.27 per share in 2024. Revenue is growing nicely, too, with a projected 20% growth rate in 2024. Market capitalization: $2 billion 2. Canadian Solar Inc. (CSIQ) Though headquartered in Canada, Canadian Solar also has significant international operations, including in the fast-growing solar marketplace of China. And unlike some of the other stocks on this list that only produce solar panels or related hardware, Canadian Solar has a global energy segment that provides the actual power generation from solar farms… This diversification into a utility-style business model provides it a bit more stability… analyst projections of 26% revenue growth in 2024. Market capitalization: $1.5 billion 3. Daqo New Energy Corp. (DQ) Daqo is headquartered in China… Woods Mackenzie published a report in November that stated China will have more than 80% of the world's solar manufacturing capacity through 2026. Daqo's growth rate is impressive, with total revenue of $4.6 billion in 2022 compared with about $300 million back in 2018. Market capitalization: $1.3 billion 4. Enphase Energy Inc. (ENPH) Many solar investors are drawn to Enphase, both because it's larger than many dedicated solar rivals and because of its impressive 1,489% share price increase over the past five years through Jan. 25. Enphase has made a name for itself by specializing in semiconductor products known as ‘microinverters,' which convert energy captured in those cells into usable energy for homes and businesses… Truist just upgraded the stock in January, and Canaccord Genuity initiated coverage with a ‘buy' rating in the past few weeks, too. Market capitalization: $14.5 billion 5. First Solar Inc. (FSLR) Founded in 1999… manufactures solar modules, mainly serving large-scale developers and operators of utilities or independent power grids for commercial and industrial use. The gloomy outlook for the industry in 2023 didn't take as much of a toll on First Solar, thanks to its focus on bigger customers instead of residential end-users, and its powerful position in the industry ensures it can weather short-term volatility as it looks to the future of alternative energy. Market capitalization: $15.8 billion 6. SolarEdge Technologies Inc. (SEDG) SolarEdge sells current inverter systems for solar installations, allowing the panels to produce alternating current, or AC, power that is transmissible across the energy grid. Unfortunately, the headwinds for the solar industry have been compounded by the fact that this mid-cap solar company is headquartered in Israel. As a result, shares are down a gut-wrenching 76% in the past 12 months. Market capitalization: $3.9 billion 7. Sunnova Energy International Inc. (NOVA) Sunnova installs solar arrays and energy storage solutions for homeowners and small businesses. It's modest in size… however… analysts expect more than $1 billion in total revenue in 2024 – more than 36% higher than expected 2023 sales. There's more volatility with a small and unprofitable stock… But if you want to get in on the ground floor of the residential solar rollout, Sunnova is a good option to consider in 2024. Market capitalization: $1.3 billion.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- The Top 5 Sustainable Funds of 2023: AI, Anybody? Now a look at some funds with this article titled The Top 5 Sustainable Funds of 2023: AI, Anybody? It's by Muskaan Hemrajani and seen on morningstar.com. Preventative diagnostics is a critically important component of veterinary care. In the U.S., only 40-50% of pet owners take their pets to the vet once a year. While the costs of vet visits continue to increase, the cost of not taking your pet to the vet regularly can far outweigh the cost of a vet visit. With the cost of a simple vet visit now approaching $100 in some areas, and the costs of any tests and treatments further adding to the total cost of the bill, many pet parents take the approach of not bringing their pet to the vet unless they see overt signs that their pet is struggling. However, dogs and cats are very good at masking issues that they might be having and not outwardly showing any signs of pain, and without regular checkups, issues that could have been easily managed if they were caught early can quickly turn into much more catastrophic health events. On the latest episode of Petworking, I was joined by Dr. Ben Hantler, DVM, MBA, and Senior Product Manager at Heska, and my colleague, Jessica Stewart, Senior Manager at Maia Strategy Group. Prior to joining Maia, Jessica was a Diagnostic Support Consultant at IDEXX. In the course of our conversation, Ben noted that 20-30% of serious cases could have been mitigated or prevented with regular veterinary visits. While pet insurance is undoubtedly a key driver in getting pet parents to visit the vet more frequently, Ben, Jess, and I kept our conversation focused on diagnostics. We touched on the variety of tests available, from organ function assessments and blood counts, to infectious disease screenings like heartworm testing. The necessity of these getting these tests on an annual basis cannot be understated, when it comes to catching potential health issues early. When we adopted Peony, we were told she was heartworm-negative. However, a month after we got her, I brought her to the vet, because she seemed to be experiencing pain in her hind legs, and our trainer suspected she might have pulled a muscle. Wanting to eliminate tick-borne illnesses as a potential cause of her symptoms, our vet ran a SNAP test. While it was negative for Lyme, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasma, it did show that she was positive for heartworm. Had we not gotten Peony tested, it's very likely that we would have caught the infection too late to treat her. The American Heartworm Society notes that even the most sensitive heartworm test can fail to detect the presence of antigen when levels of circulating antigen are low due to the presence of immature worms. Our vet told us that this was likely how we were told Peony was heartworm-negative when we adopted her. Unfortunately, if left untreated, heartworm can cause severe organ damage, heart failure, and respiratory issues, and can have fatal consequences. Even catching it early, it was a several-month process to treat Peony, during which we had to restrict her activity to two 5-minute walks per day. In addition to catching potentially fatal diseases like heartworm, regular diagnostic testing can provide pet owners with a baseline that they can refer to as their pet ages. Having year-over-year data on biomarkers like blood levels, kidney function, etc. can alert your vet to changes that may indicate potential health issues in your pet, even in the absence of symptoms. As part of this discussion, Ben, Jess and I delved into the potential use of biometric data from pet trackers, and the need to expand preventative diagnostic testing to a direct-to-consumer model. There is significant potential to enhance the quality of care through the provision of consumer-collected data to veterinarians, but a limiting factor that needs to be addressed is ensuring consistent quality in at-home sample collection. Ultimately, this is a field at the cusp of significant evolution, promising a future where preventative care, supported by technological advancements, could drastically improve the lives of pets and pet owners alike.

Aquatic and exotic medicine has been known as a challenging specialty to get into partly due to the limited, competitive nature of the residencies and internships. However, even if they say it's a 10% chance, why can't you be part of that 10%? Michelle Greenfield is currently in vet school about a month away from taking the Navle exam. She's been determined to work with aquatic animals for years and wasn't even going to let a global pandemic stop her from working towards that goal. I'd encourage you to check it out - they offer free trials.Show Notes:* [Minute 1] Question: Background on Melius.* [2] Question: Key themes/takeaways from the book.* “The reasons for failure and the formulas for success haven't really changed at all. Whether it be 1950, 1980, or 2020, they are pretty much exactly the same.”* “The truth is that their secrets are hardly secrets at all—continuous improvement, rigorous benchmarking, disciplined investment, principled leadership, solid business systems* [3] Question: Assessing culture as an outsider.* “Does it drive your daily actions?”* “Danaher or Ingersoll Rand they'll do weekly meetings where you have a weekly meeting, you have like 20 minutes, you get two minutes to state your problem a minute to ask for feedback, you move on. That's an example of a daily or a weekly feedback loop that comes around. I think the best cultures have that sort of process ingrained in them.”* [5] Question: Importance of leadership.* “You make either a good allocation to capital or poor ones. And obviously that drives a ton of shareholder value differentiation, but there's also need for sustained commitment to a system. You can see lots of management teams that have sort of laid out goals, but if you don't get everybody motivated and incentivized the right way, then they can fade away.”* [6] Question: what are you paying attention to to see whether culture is changing or whether the arrogance is creeping in?* “The value gets created everyday throughout. And so, you know, if you have a culture that's spending too much time on big ideas and not enough time on generating the cash that, that allows you the flexibility to do things, if you have a culture that's veered into being a little bit PowerPoint-focused, if it's projecting yourself internally focused as opposed to executing on the daily task that can be a real red flag.”* [9] Question: Have you seen aspects of great culture that are universal or is it very specific to the company? How much room is there for bringing in ideas from the outside?* “Having clear goals, having reinforcement loops and having the ability to course correct is universal. One of the points we try to make in the book, a lot of these companies have been innovative and a lot of companies have created categories. How do you analyze caterpillar? Well, I don't look at them as the best bulldozer, and they do, but, but they might not have the best in everything. The competitive advantage doesn't always last on innovation, but it does last on getting everything, fixed, getting everything right.”* [11] Question: “Undisciplined operations don't work” - elaborate on this.* “What do you look for when you go in a factory? Well, it's not actually all that hard. You walk into the factory, you see if the sight lines are clear, if there's a bunch of inventory stacked up and piled up there, that's something wrong. That's waste. That's confusion. That's a disruption. You look to see that there an employee sort of idea board, and that there's lots of ideas flowing through because workers are the ones who see problems and they surface them. Right? So that's a mechanism for surfacing problems.”* “I went to a mining facility once, and they're these little disks that were used for smoothing or buffing the metal. And they just did a simple thing, a shadow board. It's called you paint on a, you know, on a cardboard wall. Like here's a picture of the disc. So when you're done with it, you stack it here. They found like 70 of these things, you know, they found like a million dollars of equipment. There's a picture of the broom there to hang the broom up. Right. So very, very simple things.”* “The essence of lean is stop and fix, get things, right. Surface problems. And that's a factory floor issue. But as we kind of talked about earlier, that applies to the whole company as well. If you see a problem, you can fix it. If you don't see it, then it grows.”* [15] Question: How do you weight insights from site visit in your assessment of a company?* “It's critical. And honestly, I missed it. I was a pretty new analyst on Caterpillar. When I saw some of these issues, I think I saw three or four factories in the first year, the first 18 months. And one of these visits I walked down and there's there's bins, just bins of things, labeled rework. I was like, what's rework. Well, it didn't come out right the first time. So we're going to do it again, you know? And, you know what I did, I kept writing about the end markets cause that's what I understood at that time. I kept writing about, oh, I think mining's going to be good or bad. I thought oh, well, this doesn't feel great, but I haven't seen that many factories and probably they'll fix it. And in fact that was a, you know, it was a terrible sign. Caterpillar was struggling with production not with the equipment quality, the equipment still great, but they weren't able to crank up production. * “That was actually a huge problem, a huge cultural problem, business system problem. And managers and leaders fixed it. But as I mentioned earlier, sometimes Lean takes a while. So if you've got a workforce who isn't used to it, it might take me five years to get the new system in.”* [17] Question: If it's so useful why wouldn't everyone do Lean?* “One answer to your question is continuous improvement is a compounding process, right? And Danaher is maybe the ultimate example of that, but you fix something that gets better and then you fix something else and it gets better and you keep going.”* “It takes a very serious commitment from senior management and it takes years, you know, maybe it takes five years to get everything kind of, you know, where everybody knows that their first job is to stop and fix. The first job is to reduce, you know, inefficiency. It can be tempting to say, well, let's just buy a few hundred extra hoses and just have them there, you know?”* [19] Question: Implementing Lean - like Danaher's visual management.* “It's not rocket science, right. But it is hard to do.”* “Very easy stuff, but in our day-to-day it can be hard to stop and focus on process.”* [20] Question: Is there a disconnect between analysts and management?* “You know, my job is a tricky one. You have to be arrogant enough to have an opinion, and humble enough to to know you're probably wrong most of the time, you know, close to half the time.”* [22] Question: Forecasting volatile markets.* “A lot of people in this job like thinking about things. So you get a lot of data points. You'd like to think about it. And some of the cultural stuff is harder to think about.”* “Melius uses two year forward price targets. Partly as a mental trick to try and get yourself to focus. Partly because these things show up more over time, right.”* “If you're trying to forecast a quarter, okay. You can say, well, what was, you know, what was demand of iPhone shipped this quarter or something. But if you're trying to focus on how Apple created value over the last 10 years, I mean, it's innovation and supply chain, you know? So those two things, you know then they switch and relative performance as your timeframe goes out longer.”* [24] Question: What have you observed in terms of what people do well or poorly with, with incentivizing the organization?* “If you have all your incentives structured around raising margin, that might be a phenomenal thing if you're underperforming, if your margins are low. Let's work on pricing, let's work on factory efficiency and et cetera. Eventually that playbook may come to an end. And if you're a person who's grown up in that system and you step into a leadership role it's hard to say to wall street to say all the analysts, you know what, they, we're just going to stop all that, you know, and we're gonna do something else entirely, right? Because investors invest on a certain expectation of future earnings and anything that changes.”* John Deere: “Under the current CEO, John May, they basically shifted their strategy. I think with the endorsement of the prior CEO as well, but they had tried to be a global manufacturer who was leading in all sizes of tractors and they started to look around and they said, well, the technology is changing so fast that we can actually create more value by focusing on large, we're going to try and serve all our customers. We're going to focus on investing in large farms where we can do autonomous tractors, or we can do, you know, actually they're, they're doing AI pattern recognition.”* “One company I follow United Rentals where incentives were a huge portion of the transformation. So they had different branch managers. Let's say, let's say you're a local McDonald's and you're incentivized on beating out the McDonald's down the road. That's kind of crazy. Right. And so, you know, one of the things that, one of the very simple, the powerful changes made it United rentals under a new CEO was let's shift the compensation to focus on regional or district results rather than on your own.”* “And that's a capital intensive industry. So let's charge people for the capital. You know, if you want to buy 10 more pieces of equipment to rent, [00:27:00] you know, that that's part of your compensation. You have to make a return on that. Bizarrely it had not necessarily been that way before.”* [29] Question: What metrics to track?* “Danaher and Roper they do the same thing, a very simple sort of cash return on cash invested. It's simplicity again, right. You know, if you have hundreds of metrics, it's hard to track them. It's hard to know where you're supposed to be doing.”* [30] Question: Assessing new CEOs.* “This is one of the great things about being in this industry is you get a chance to meet a lot of different management teams and you'll probably be wrong about many, but you at least have a basis on which to sort of judge.”* [32] Question: Trade-off of having access to CEOs: gaining insight vs. being subjected to selling.* [34] Question: Assessing big decisions like M&A.* “The ones that have gone wrong. And I write about a couple of them, you know, and again, a self-critical way, I thought the mining market would do X and it did Y so if you're basing an acquisition off of that, that can be very challenging.Versus if you're saying, hey, you know, I took the margins from 7% to 21% because of these processes and this company doesn't have this culture of process. And we can approve them. Then you're making more of a bet on your internal capabilities. So at least in our world that a lot of value has been created by the quote unquote compounders, like Roper like Danaher or like TransDigm. And they're able to use that to make relatively small bets that play to their strengths and they all have different strengths, let's say, but they all have a systematic way of approaching that strength or consistent way of approaching that strength.”* “If you look at Dave Cote, again at Honeywell, I believe you mentioned in his book that, you know, one of his jobs is try and create enough space for him to just sit and read and think … just finding time because being a CEO is a massively difficult job.”* [37] Question: Tell me everything you know about compounders, basically.* “They get their margins flowing, their cashflow going. They have often a fairly diverse set of businesses and they find it relatively easy to find new opportunities where they buy them and they, they run the same playbook again. So you buy a company, the margins are 10% and you bring them up to 20. All of a sudden that's generating cash. And as you do that more and more, your base gets bigger and you can compound it and ever accelerating rate. It's exponential growth. You know, an exponential growth is maybe slow at first and then very, very powerful over time.”* “I cover a few in Ametek and IDEXX, which do niche, industrial applications, Ingersoll, Rand. I think there's going to be a wonderful compounder over time that has a great system. So it's huge value creation and it's steady and it's repeatable.”* “And that's part of the idea of the book. We know what happens after innovation matures, you know, fades, it's culture, execution, and some of these things we've been talking about. So the answer is there's amazingly fruitful avenues for capital deployment. Cause not everybody has gotten these lessons and the lessons sounds simple, but they're not easy to execute always consistently.”* [40] Question: Evaluating compounders early on.* “There are companies that put up what he called a movie set. You know, it looks like lean. It looks like, you know a functioning system. And obviously they're trying, it's not meant to be, but it's not there.”* “You watch those metrics very closely. You see the steadiness, another answer to your question is what's the input, you know, so, you know, what are the daily management processes that you're doing? What are the daily cultural attributes of your company that are, that are there, right?”* [43] Question: Examples where it doesn't work?* “Illinois tool works had a decentralized system. … And in roughly 2006, seven, they had, I think 550 business units. And the idea was, you know, every business units can do a deal every year or every four years or whatever, and we'll compound it in a way, right. … I actually did a note that I didn't publish. That was one of my best notes ever, and I didn't publish it because I went back. I was like, all right, let's show how … each of those little divisions can do a deal every year and how that can drive compounding growth. I did the analysis and it looked like, well, gosh, actually it looks like they do a couple of big deals here and there.”* [46] Question: Value of CFOs.* “Sometimes we think a high-quality CFO can be, you know, under-priced in some ways. … we found that the CFO role can be going to be dramatically important.”* [49] Question: Managing relationships with companies.* “If you're an analyst and your job is to not just say, okay, that looks good, you know, but to actually create some value. There can be a desire to say something interesting, intriguing, provoking, different, right. To push them. And when that's done best, it's, you know, you're right. But I've spoken of arrogance before. I mean if you're covering Caterpillar and you have toured seven factories, but that's not that many, do you really say their production system is totally hosed? You know, is that right? Would that have been the right call for me?”* [52] Question: Smooth vs. volatile earnings.* “The CFO of Danaher's gave us this, the lesson, like, how do you think about volatile business as well? Let's say you buy something and revenues fall 20% and you apply all these fixes and you're, you know, you're applying maybe fixes for a down cycle. It'd be different for a steady business. And eventually you, you know, you get it back up and revenues, bounce back cause they're cyclical. And then now they're at 110% of where they were the effort and the lost time and compounding that you've lost during those two years of down cycle. Versus if it had just grown five percentage and you improve everything and then you've created cashflow and you can compound it. You've lost time and you've lost energy. … I think Warren Buffett has said, I'd rather have a, I don't want to misquote, a volatile 25% return than a steady 10. I think Danaher might say, well, we can do a lot with a steady 10. You know, we can sort of crank that through and compound it, whereas a volatile 20 or a volatile 15 or whatever the break point would be less valuable.”* [52] Question: Evaluating long-term investments and R&D.Enjoyed this piece? In this weeks episode we chat to the amazing Ebony Escalona. Ebony is passionate about building communities that count and chats about ‘Vets: Stay, Go, Diversify' being created while wearing a flamingo onesie. In early 2017 Ebony founded a support group on Facebook for veterinary professionals who had become frustrated with their careers. The group was an immediate success, providing inspiration, guidance, mentorship and networking for those looking to remain satisfied in practice, diversify their careers or develop new skills outside the ordinary practice box. Ebony is passionate about building confidence in others and is a huge advocate of the 'portfolio career', simply put, doing the things you love and loving the things you do. This approach is perfectly illustrated through her own career path: Ebony has worked as an equine vet for many years, in clinical roles that ranged from primary to referral care as well as academic posts. She is also an educator and entrepreneur and previously worked in music television. https://www.vsgd.co/ https://www.facebook.com/VetsSGD In our clinical segment we continue a series of discussions about the investigation of anaemia with our very own Scott. This week we chat about everything from the hunger games to the investigation of anaemia! Ashley is a real veterinary nurse inspiration and a true friend. We chat to Ashley about her amazing career in veterinary nursing and some of the challenges that have faced the profession recently, particularly in out of hours practice. Ashley grew up in a small town in rural North Carolina. From there she moved to a slightly bigger part of the state to go to university at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC where she studied animal science and obtained a bachelor's degree in that field in 2003. While studying, she started working nights at an ECC veterinary hospital and I developed a passion for ECC nursing and teaching. Ashley moved to the UK in 2008 to take a job as an ECC nurse at Vets Now Gateshead and has been there ever since (currently as Clinical Nursing Lead). Ashley earned her CertVNECC in 2010 and continue to tutor for that program, as well as other teaching and mentoring for IVC, Vets Now and the veterinary thought exchange. Tune in to a special 2-part edition of The Hennessy Report, recorded live from the 2021 Maine HR Convention. Thanks to Bud Bernstein, President and CEO, for bringing everyone together. In part 2, Dave is joined by Gio Twigge, SVP & CHRO at IDEXX where their mission is to enhance the health and well-being of pets, people, and livestock. Gio begins with more than a moment that changed his life, but rather a formative period of his life - the 70s and 80s living in South Africa during the height, and fall, of Apartheid as a gay white male. He describes how this led him to the HR path to make an impact in an organization and make sure employees don't have a lonely experience at work. Gio also describes IDEXX's values for their 10,000+ workforce, their focus on driving innovation, the importance of a great culture in addition to a purpose and product, and a lack of hierarchy. If you missed part 1, episode 69, Dave was joined by Barry Gale, SVP/CHRO at Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston.

Burnout. We know about it. Many of us live it. Is there a solution?...For this episode, I've invited Dr. Ivan “Zak” Zakharenkov to share with us his research on burnout in veterinary institutions-- all collected from his dissertation and experience in 35 different hospitals across Canada. With his extensive background, Dr. Zak aims to crack the code and build a new methodology to address veterinary groups' acquisition, integration, and improvement; all while keeping employee experience as the top priority. Could consolidation really be a solution to some of the issues in vetmed? My opinion has definitely changed after learning about a possible burnout-proof mindset for corporate practice transitions. In today's episode, I'm joined by Dr. Ivan Zak. Ivan began his career as an ER veterinarian in Canada where over many years he made two very important observations. First, that vet clinics are awash with unpredictable problems that cause chaos, and second, he hated having a boss. Thus the perfect conditions for innovation arose and the entrepreneur inside was unleashed. Ivan is the creator of Smart Flow, a workflow optimization system for vet practices, subsequently acquired by Fortune 500 company IDEXX. Ivan is currently leading Veterinary Integration Solutions, a first-in-the-industry Consolidator Operating Platform. He just finished his MBA dissertation studying how Lean Thinking can help reduce burnout in veterinary organizations. A thesis where he's taken the skills learned in software development and has applied them to the day to day operations of veterinary practices - outlining a strategy he believes may hold the key to reducing professional burnout.

Enzootic Pneumonia primarily caused by Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is a reason for high economic losses in pig production worldwide. In most herds, the vaccination of piglets with one-shot or two-shot Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae vaccines is used as a prophylaxis against enzootic pneumonia. The influence of maternal antibodies on the effect of the vaccines is discussed controversially. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the Stellamune®Mycoplasma (Two-Shot) and StellamuneOne® (One-Shot) (Pfizer) against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae on the performance of the piglets and to evaluate the influence of maternal antibodies. Furthermore sow colostrum was tested with an ELISA (HerdCheck M.hyo, IDEXX) as an alternative test for the detection of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae antibodies. The present study was done in a herd of sows with a growing unit, which was followed up on a fattening farm. The trials were done from December 2002 to June 2004. In the present study 254 sows and 423 piglets were included. These were divided into five treatment groups: group 1: vaccinated sows/ one-shot-vaccinated piglets; group 2: vaccinated sows/two-shot-vaccinated piglets; group 3: non vaccinated sows/ one-shot-vaccinated piglets; group 4: non-vaccinated sows/ two-shot-vaccinated piglets; group 5: non-vaccinated sows/ non-vaccinated piglets. After vaccination of 148 sows 147 of them had seroconverted three weeks a.p.. Piglet antibody concentrations from the vaccinated and non vaccinated sows one week p.n. showed that the sow vaccination induces a high concentration of maternal antibodies in piglets. Sow vaccination did not interfere with the humeral antibody response after piglet vaccination. At the age of 20 weeks no significant differences in humeral immune response were found in groups of vaccinated piglets. The non vaccinated piglet group showed significantly lower values than the four vaccinated piglet groups. All vaccinated piglet groups showed significantly better lungscores than the unvaccinated group. A significant difference was also found between the groups with one-shot-vaccinated piglets. he group of non-vaccinated sows showed a significantly better lungscore. This could be an indication for the interference of high amounts of maternal antibodies on the effect of the StellamuneOne® vaccine. In 105-day-old pigs no significant differences were evaluated on the average daily weight gain. The different vaccination schemes had no influence on the body weight until the pre-fattening period. Examing sow colostrums at a dilution of 1:10 with an ELISA had a sensitivity of 85% and a specificity of 55%, seemed to be an appropriate method to exclude Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae infections in the herd. In conclusion the vaccination of piglets in this herd in this herd with the Stellamune®Mycoplasma and StellamuneOne® against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae improved the pulmonary health and had no negative influence on the production of humeral antibody values.
