This week we have a story about bringing fainting goats to Foggy Oak Farm! A couple of springs ago we brought home three fainting goats – a mom and her two babies. We learned that while they DO faint when they are startled or excited, it doesn't stop them from running things. Let's learn about these interesting ungulates, and how they went from the new kids on the block to the bosses of all the sheep and goats on the farm. New intro Support the showIf you like our show, please subscribe on your favorite podcast platform and share it with others! Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 1:26-32Kayla watched as her dad herded two baby goats into the family's goat pen. They looked so cute as they started eagerly exploring their new surroundings, curious about all the other goats in the pen."Can I go in and pet them, Dad?" asked Kayla. "Sure!" Dad said. "Just be careful not to startle them. These goats are sometimes called fainting goats because--"Before Dad could finish his explanation, their dog Buster bounded into the yard and started barking excitedly at the new arrivals. Immediately, the baby goats stiffened their legs and fell over."Oh no!" exclaimed Kayla. "I think something's wrong with the baby goats!""They're fine," Dad reassured her as he calmed down Buster. "I was just going to say that these are called fainting goats because when they get startled, their legs stiffen and they tumble over. They don't really faint. They actually have a medical condition that causes their muscles to stay tense longer than usual when they get scared. That's why they fall."Kayla hurried into the pen to check on the babies. Soon they relaxed and were back on their feet, roaming around the pen as usual. Kayla started feeding them grain pellets from her hand. "I know exactly how they feel! I felt like fainting when I had to give my speech in front of my whole class last week. I was so scared!"Dad smiled. "I know you were extremely nervous, but you didn't let fear paralyze you.""I asked God to help me," said Kayla. "When it was time to give my speech, I took a deep breath and said a quick prayer. I felt more confident walking up front because I knew God was with me.""There are a lot of verses in the Bible reminding us not to be afraid because God is with us," Dad said. "It's okay to feel nervous and scared sometimes, but we don't want to let that stop us from doing what we need to do. Jesus promises to always be with us, so we never have to face any situation alone. We can have courage because He is with us even when we feel scared."Kayla grinned. "I'll remember that the next time I feel like a fainting goat!" -Kendra AngleHow About You?Have you ever felt so afraid about a situation that you thought you couldn't go through with it? Maybe it was giving a speech, taking a test, going to a new school, or going to the doctor. God promises to be with us through every hard time. When you feel overwhelmed, remember that He has given you His Spirit, who is always with you. Trust Him for help and courage when you feel afraid.Today's Key Verse:For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. It's probably safe to say that everyone has heard of fainting goats, which are more correctly called myotonic goats, and they don't actually faint.Today we are separating fact from fiction in our conversation with Phil Sponenberg, DVM, Ph.D. of Virginia Tech who has been breeding myotonics for 30 years. He is also the technical advisor for The Livestock Conservancy, which has the myotonic goat on the "recovering" section of the Conservation Priority List, where the breed was originally considered critically endangered.Dr. Sponenberg discusses the history of the myotonic goat and what exactly is a "fainting goat." Although you can milk any goat, this breed is primarily a meat goat.If you've thought about goats but were scared off by the idea that they are loud and hard to keep fenced in, then a myotonic might be the breed for you. They are quieter than some breeds, and that same medical condition that causes them to faint also means that they can't jump or climb fences. But if you are strictly considering the myotonic because you wanted to be entertained by fainting goats, then you might want to reconsider because "fainting" really doesn't happen that often.Full show notes here -- https://thriftyhomesteader.com/fainting-goats/ To see the most recent episodes, visit  ForTheLoveOfGoats.comWant to support the content you love?Head over to -- https://thrifty-homesteader.ck.page/products/love-goats-tip-jar

"You can think of exercise as an intravenous dose of hope." ~Kelly McGonigalKelly McGonigal (@kellymcgonigal) is a health psychologist and lecturer at Stanford University who specializes in understanding the mind-body connection. As a pioneer in the field of "science-help," her mission is to translate insights from psychology and neuroscience into practical strategies that support personal well-being and strengthen communities. She is the best-selling author of The Willpower Instinct and The Upside of Stress.Through the Stanford Center for Compassion and Altruism, she helped create Stanford Compassion Cultivation Training, a program now taught around the world that helps individuals strengthen their empathy, compassion, and self-compassion.You might know her from her TED talk, "How to Make Stress Your Friend," which is one of the most viewed TED talks of all time, with over 20 million views. Her new book, The Joy of Movement, explores why physical exercise is a powerful antidote to the modern epidemics of depression, anxiety, and loneliness. In this episode, we talk about everything from tai chi to ultra-marathons to dance, and we really get into the science around how these different movements produce chemical changes in our brains that lift our mood and reduce anxiety and depression. Here, Kelly gives us the scoop about something called "hope molecules" and the minimum effective dose of movement required to produce them.Connect with Kelly: Website | Twitter | Facebook | InstagramLinks from this episode:The Joy of Movement: How Exercise Helps Us Find Happiness, Hope, Connection, and Courage by Kelly McGonigalThe Upside of Stress: Why Stress Is Good for You, and How to Get Good at It by Kelly McGonigalOther Books by Kelly McGonigalThe Stanford Center for Compassion and AltruismHow to Make Stress Your Friend by Kelly McGonigal, TEDGlobal 2013StudioNia, PortlandTai Chi: A Gentle Way to Fight Stress, The Mayo ClinicA History and Style Guide of Tae Kwon Do, LiveAboutYoga for Everyone, The New York TimesUltra-Endurance Athletics, The Why? Bliss and Drumming: The Slow Enlightenment of the Hard Rock Drummer

From the blog www.blissanddrumming.com, read by Clementine. *** Fear is such a funny thing. I don’t mean funny-strange. I mean funny- ha-ha. When I am in a hole, I forget that I have tools to get myself out of the wallowing. I guess that’s one definition of being in a hole, that you forget that you are actually able to crawl out. When I remember that I have all the power to change things, that is the first thing that makes me laugh. Then, what is really funny is when I let fear in. I invite it in, let it fill me up. I don’t tell myself a story about it, I just feel the sensation of it. First, my chest feels heavy, like I can’t breathe right. My limbs get heavy, and my whole body feels weighted down as if something is preventing me from moving. When I feel this way, I see that the way my body reacts in fear is just like a mouse, like a rodent, or like one of those fainting goats. I just go stock still, weighted with fear. The thought is a little funny. Then, I bring the fear into the mind, and think of the thing I’m afraid of, and follow it out to the farthest conclusion. When I follow any fear out to the very worst scenario, the final conclusion is always the same: “And then I will die.”
