#158 Facing Fears and Finding Joy in Life Through Discomfort

Marta On The Move Podcast- Hosted by Marta Napoleone Mazzoni

Fear– An unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger. We are not immune to fear. It comes to us like waves and is usually unwelcome. There are global fears such as the war in Ukraine, global warming, food shortages, death. Death of a loved one, or our own amount of time on this spinning globe. I will touch on some of that later, but today I want to tackle some fears that we ourselves can have control over to allow us to stretch outside our comfort zones, try new things, and find peace and joy in our lives. Fear stems from uncertainty and doubt. How do we face it? We have to sit with discomfort. “Never be afraid of not knowing, find out” Discomfort- make (someone) feel uneasy, anxious, or embarrassed The internet has become something that has made us more afraid than ever and extremely comfortable being more than an arms length away from coming face to face with our discomfort. Discomfort is why most of us never face our fears or step outside of our comfort zones. Think about it. Who wants to feel uneasy, anxious or embarrassed… nobody. The problem is when we avoid these feelings we create a bubble of safety around us that isolates us and keeps us fixed in our habits, patterns and zone of comfort. Let's look at an example of this. You get invited to a party, and at first you have every intention of going. You knew what you were going to wear, what to bring. You looked forward to seeing some friends you haven't connected with in a while. The day of the party comes and you suddenly think to yourself. “What if I don't know anyone there? What if nobody talks to me? Staying home and watching The Durrells in Corfu sounds amazing, I don't have to go. Nobody will miss me.” Now, I am not saying that a little couch introvert time isn't needed by all of us, but I am sure there have been situations where you wanted to attend an event, and discomfort or fear of the unknown held you back. In order to conquer and face our fear we must push past discomfort. It takes a leap of faith to delve into uncertainty… How do we deal with uncertainty? “The unknown is just something we don't know yet.” This statement is 100 percent fact. Uncertainty is just having doubts about the unknown. Not knowing something gives people anxiety, it fuels self doubt, and ultimately makes them feel self-conscious and uncomfortable. Think about it. If you know a subject very well, you would be happy to speak about it. Someone gives you a topic you know nothing about, and suddenly you are freaking out. All that is, is you learning about the topic! How incredibly powerful is that fact?! That you have the power to shed your fears by learning what you don't know. It is simple, yet something we overlook due to massive amount of distraction. Our minds have power over our joy and happiness, it just takes some discomfort getting there. Here are some personal examples of this… I decided to push Phil's and I's boundaries this year by signing us up for Improv Comedy Classes. Getting Phil to go was not an easy feat. He was ridiculously upset that I signed us up. He didn't want to be put on display. When I finally convinced him to go, he was miserable, and extremely anxious the entire two hours before we went, acting like a 10 year old that is being dragged to church. Once we arrived, he was fine. I even caught him smiling a couple times. The second class was the same, only this time I caught him laughing. Third class he was beginning to loosen up on stage, having more fun with it. Now he looks forward to our classes, and goes to shows every weekend! It is a new hobby he never would have discovered if he wasn't brave enough to try and learn this new skill, make new friends ands with his discomfort. He now knows the process. He knows people who are going to be there, and he is more confident because he is starting to understand improv and open up communication with others. I use Phil because he is a classic example of someone who was extremely uncomfortable with showing up for something new, BUT after going for a while, now loves it! Improv has since improved our communication with one another, we laugh and joke more, listen more, and has brought increased joy and playfulness back into our lives. Hence, why they are sponsoring this episode. Do you have a something like this in your life? Something you know you would love, but you avoid because of the discomfort or fear of going? How do we move past these feelings? I actually encourage you to ask for help on this one. Working up the nerve to do things alone can be intimidating, but I know there are people out there that probably feel the exact same way and would love to join you on your new fear busting journey. FRIENDS are the key to helping you overcome your fears. Try this… Grab a piece of paper or a journal and write down- A list of fears that you have. At least three activities or experiences you have always wanted to try but haven't due to discomfort. A lists of friends or family that would help you overcome this fear or complete something you want to do. Now comes the hard part of pushing past your discomfort and ASKING them to help you achieve the results you want which can look like- Having them do some research on the subject and explaining it to you. Asking them to listen as you talk openly about your fears to them. Asking them to go with you to a class or adventure so you don't have to go alone. I too need those people in my life to help me break past my comfort zones and face some anxieties and fear. For all of us will just require some vulnerability on your part asking for help, which is never easy. I promise you that if you sit with your discomfort a bit, you will find the root cause and possibly overcome it. Doing this will not only allow you to try something new, but will create a more meaningful relationships with that friend because they will feel honored that you asked them for help with this. Instant joy! “Sometimes happiness is not knowing the whole story” On the flip side of learning about your fears to become comfortable and more certain, there is also the possibility that you will never have understanding, or even want to know something about the larger questions of our existence. Death, uncertainty and what will the future bring cause pain and anxiety in all of us. In this case. Sitting with your uncertainty and accepting that everything will work out IS possible. It is when we are in a state of calm peace that the nagging uncertainty removes itself from our lives and we become open to possibilities and not worry about what we can't control. How do we accomplish this? For me, it was through self care. Self care in the form of movement, meditation, therapy, shadow work. This is all very healing work, and the goal of all of it is to find stillness which leads to happiness because you are pulling yourself into the present moment. It is why I love teaching meditation with my students. I know what that restlessness feels like, and it isn't pretty. You feel trapped in it and it feels endless. It creates negative emotions, judgement, fear, and of course… uncertainty, discomfort and doubt. If we can all learn to sit with our emotions and bring awareness to the surface, peace CAN be found. In the end…we have this one life, and that is a gift. We should soak in every minute of it and try and spread happiness. That joy starts within by sitting with discomfort. Recent Personal Experiences in Conquering Fear, Change, and Uncertainty I am on my own personal journey of exploring wishes, dreams, and experiences that I had either left aside in my younger years, or never stepped up to the plate to try. So often as adults life has influenced our opinions about what we LOVE to do. It becomes blurry, and habitual. We can sometimes forget the dreams we had when we were younger. Through deep meditation, and journaling work, almost a year later, and I now have my list of what truly fills my cup, and what is preprogrammed to look like it does. (But it doesn't… happy hour anyone?) After I had my list I began digging into my fears, and traumas. There was a ton of discomfort through that process, but it uncovered a lot for me and is leading me to finding more joy, peace and meaning in my life. It is opening up doors to allow me pursue my passion of helping others lead their lives from their hearts. If you are ready to grow, break some boundaries, and open your heart to lead your life with joy feel free to ask me about my classes or my new Marta on the Move Mentorship program. I would love to hear about something you were fearful or uncomfortable with that you pushed past and overcame. Send me an email and tell me all about it for inspiration

Books and TV series have kept me sane during the past few years. Two series that pop into mind are The Durrells in Corfu and, more recently, Around the World in 80 Days. As the credits rolled by, I smiled when I saw Steve Barron's name pop up as episode director multiple times. My mind drifted back to the 80s when I'd been lucky enough to work on a few music videos Steve directed out of Limelight Production in Los Angeles. Steve was one of the good guys, a gentleman who didn't scream or pout, and due to his background in the camera department, he understood and appreciated film crews.  Steve Barron started in films as a camera assistant on epic productions such as Richard Donner's Superman, Richard Attenborough's A Bridge Too Far and Ridley Scott's The Duellists. He began directing what were known in the UK as promotional videos in the early eighties for bands such as The Jam, Human League, and Adam & the Ants.  In 1982 he conceived and directed the award-winning Billie-Jean music video, the first single from Michael Jackson's incredible Thriller album. More seminal videos followed, and at the 1986 MTV Awards, Steve's work was acknowledged when Dire Straits' Money for Nothing won Best Video, and A-Ha's Take On Me was awarded Best Director.  Steve's cult classic film Electric Dreams was released in 1984. His second film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1986), stunned the industry by becoming the first independent feature to break the $100 million theatrical mark. Steve directed other features, including Coneheads, Rat, Mike Bassett: England Manager, and TV network mega-series Merlin, Arabian Nights, Dreamkeeper, and Treasure Island, all garnering him a slew of awards, including 27 Emmy nominations, 5 Gold Globe nominations, and a DGA nod.Oh, and he's also a hemp farmer!Steve Barron IMDBEGG N CHIPS & BILLIE JEANAround the World in 80 DaysThe Durrells in CorfuSupport the show (https://paypal.me/TheBookshopPodcast?locale.x=en_US)

Leslie Caron is an award-winning actress and dancer who starred in some of the most memorable films of Hollywood's golden age including An American in Paris and Gigi. Leslie was first cast away on Desert Island Discs in 1956 when she was 25, and her return, nearly 66 years later, marks the greatest gap between appearances in the programme's 80-year history. She was born in Paris in 1931 and started ballet lessons at 11 to please her mother, a dancer herself who had performed on Broadway. Her early childhood was marred by the war and growing up in occupied Paris, but when she was 16 she joined Roland Petit's Ballets des Champs-Elysées which opened up a new world of possibility. A year later she was spotted during a performance by a member of the audience - Gene Kelly. He lobbied MGM to cast her as his leading lady in An American in Paris, which launched her Hollywood career. Leslie played the tile role in Gigi both on stage in London in a production directed by Peter Hall, who she married, and in the feature film directed by Vincente Minelli. The film won all nine of its nominations at the 1959 Academy Awards – a record at the time. Leslie went on to star in the L-Shaped Room and later played roles in the films Chocolat and Damage. In 2006 she won an Emmy Award for her part in the television series Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. More recently she was on our TV screens playing the Countess Mavrodaki in the drama series The Durrells. She was awarded the Commandeur de la Légion d'honneur in 2013 and the JF Kennedy Gold Medal in the Arts two years later. Leslie lives in London and describes herself as “almost retired.” Presenter Lauren Laverne Producer Paula McGinley

In this episode, hosts Alan and Walt get a chance to talk with former meterologist, Karen Minton, of WSB-TV. Karen's career didn't start with a focus on television or meteorology. After getting her degree in the biological sciences, she was working for Dairy Queen corporate offices. She really thought she was going to be heading down that path. A chance encounter with a news director helped shape the course of her future. Starting on the West coast as a weather reporter, she eventually received a call from The Weather Channel. She isn't sure how they found out about her, but she took the job and relocated to Atlanta, Georgia. After a time, she thought she would be taking a new role in Florida. However, the station had just been sold and the news director said most people were bailing. The pause eventually led to being part of the WSB-TV team on channel 2. As her career grew, she knew she needed to get her American Meteorological Society certification. As a divorced mother of two, she juggled work, raising her daughters, going to school and getting her certification. She spent the rest of her career as a news and weather anchor for WSB-TV, retiring just a couple years ago. Though she has hung up her Doppler Radar, she is eyeing a possible future as a patient advocate. However, before that, she has a few trips she'd like to go on and some fun to be had. Following the interivew, Karen hung out as Walt began his review of another horrible movie he was forced to watch. Next, Alan and Walt each shared a pair of crazy news items. And, as always, they all wrapped up with the entertainment segment, letting us know what they have been watching, reading and listening to. WATCHING Walt began re-watching Arrested Development and binged all of season one. He really enjoyed the start of the series, Life After People on Hulu. Finally, he began watching, The Queens Gambit, and loved the first episode. Alan introduced his visiting Father-in-Law to the reboot of, Star Trek, directed by JJ Abrams. He re-watched, A Fish Called Wanda, Dave, Pale Rider and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Each of those movies is highly recommended. Alan continues to watch the weekly drops of, Loki, and has not yet been disappointed. As to the YouTube channels, he watched Ashleigh Burton react to Thor, Casablanca, A League of Their Own, Snatch and Ferris Beuller's Day Off. The Channel, Popcorn in Bed, reacted to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Pulp Fiction, Independence Day, Arrival and Top Gun. Finally, he always catches The Daily Doug. Karen loved the series, Chuck. She also his hooked on British shows and suggests, Victoria, The Crown, Endeavor, Shetland, Midummer Murders, Outlander, The Durrells of Corfu, Grantchester and Zen. READING Walt and Alan and both trying to finish the Star Trek behind-the-scenes book they both have. Karen just finished, "The Art of Power," by John Meacham, a book about Thomas Jefferson. She's also big into Ken Follet and the Century Trilogy, which cosists of, "Fall of Giants," "Winter of the World," and "Edge of Eternity." The other series is the Pillars of Earth, consisting of, "The Pillars of Earth," "World Without End," "A Column of Fire," and, "The Evening and the Morning." She also suggests, "The Splended and the Vile," by Erik Larson and "Grant" by Ron Chernow. LISTENING Walt continues to pour his way through Camp Hell: Anneewakee podcast. He also likes the sports podcast, Holy Crap It's Sports with Pete Davis. Alan continues to listen to the 2002 album, "Hummingbird," as well as random songs by them via his Alexa. As for podcasts, this week he listened to the latest episodes of, Measuring the Score, 60MW Podcast (doing a throw-back watch and review of Condorman) and Radiolabyrinth. Though the show offers a fictionalized account of the Durrells’ lives, the characters were based on real people. Bokförvandlingar 4: Hur Obelisk och Olympia press förändrade världen

OBS

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 11, 2021 10:34

Samtidigt började romanerna efterfrågas i bokhandeln. Ur tryckpressarna spottas heta titlar som Tender was my flesh och The Loins of Amon. Ever wandered what the creative process is behind the films, tv shows and theatre productions you watch? Well, Crew Chats is a podcast going behind the scenes and chatting to the crew that help make these productions. Lizzie Moul grew up on a farm in Lancashire where after a trip to Hampton Court palace and seeing the re-enactors, coupled with watching costume dramas on television, Lizzie became fascinated with the world of costume. Later as a part of school work experience Lizzie had the opportunity to do some work in a wedding dress shop, where she was able to learn how to alter and bead dresses amongst other things. Lizzie went onto study Costume with Performance Design at the Arts University Bournemouth and upon graduating got a job as a trainee on the TV show, ’Lewis’. Ever since, Lizzie has been working in the industry predominately as a costume standby, she has worked on productions such as, ‘Florence Foster Jenkins’, ‘The Durrells in Corfu’, ‘Phantom Thread’, ‘Misbehaviour’ and ‘Men in Black: International’ to name a few. Lizzie's Recommendations: -Cold War -Watchmen -Salt of The Earth -Springwatch (all the watch's!)

Usually on Material Matters I speak to a combination of designers, architects, artists or makers. This episode is a little bit different. Steve Barron is a multi-award winning movie and television director, who made his name in the eighties with a slew of iconic videos featuring artists such as: Michael Jackson, Dire Straits, A-ha, Madonna, Paul McCartney, David Bowie and The Jam to name just a few. Subsequently, he segued into films – directing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Coneheads, and Mike Bassett: England manager – as well as the small screen, with recent credits including The Durrells on the BBC. However, in 2016 he established Margent Farm on a 53-acre site in the Cambridgeshire countryside where he grows hemp – a rather magical but misunderstood crop, which has an array of possible uses and the potential to change all our lives for the better. Not only that but he used the crop as the key material to build his own farm house, designed by Practice Architecture. In this episode we talk about: deciding to farm hemp in the first instance; its potential as a building material, in cooking, and for the fashion world; persuading the government of hemp’s import; why it should not be confused with Marijuana; Steve’s early career working with the likes of A-ha; and making the groundbreaking Billie Jean video with a certain Michael Jackson. It’s eclectic stuff. You can find out more about Margent Farm hereAnd you can sign up to my newsletter here Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/materialmatters?fan_landing=true)

When we first learned about the closures, many of us thought they would last for two weeks. And because they've been expanding incrementally, many of us have continued with the same plan and mindset — even though circumstances have radically changed. In many states, students won't be returning at all before summer break.  Have you re-evaluated your plan in light of the changing circumstances? -- Referenced in this episode:  The Durrells in Corfu (this is an affiliate link, which means I may earn a small commission from Amazon at no additional cost to you) Tweet

Jeremy Swift is one of the UK’s finest character actors, with roles in The Smoking Room, The Durrells, Gosford Park and the forthcoming Mary Poppins sequel, currently in production, as well as a host of other work on stage and screen. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview David Morrissey of Starz's The Missing. One of TV's most gripping thrillers, “The Missing” returns with a new case, new characters and a new location. The series follows Sam and Gemma played by David Morrissey (“The Walking Dead,” “Extant”) and Keeley Hawes (“Line of Duty,” “The Casual Vacancy,” “The Durrells”), whose daughter Alice went missing in 2003. In 2014, a young British woman stumbles through the streets of her German hometown and collapses. Her name is Alice Webster, played by newcomer Abigail Hardingham (Nina Forever), and she has been missing for 11 years. Alice's return sends shockwaves through the small community. Told in dual timelines, flitting between 2014 and the present day, we follow Alice's family as they are thrown back into a turmoil that threatens to tear them apart at the seams. When French missing person's detective, Julien Baptiste, played by Tchéky Karyo (Goldeneye, The Patriot), races across Europe to pursue a 12-year-old case that he never let die, we begin to explore the murky morality and emotional complexity of what happens when the missing child you've been longing to return actually comes back. The cast also includes Roger Allam (“Endeavour,” “Tamara Drewe”), Laura Fraser (“Breaking Bad,” “Peter & Wendy,” “One of Us”), Anastasia Hille (Snow White and the Huntsman, “Prey”), Lia Williams (“The Crown,” “The Foreigner”), Jake Davies (“X + Y,” “Yen”), Florian Bartholomäi (“Deutschland 83,” Smaragdgrün, “Tatort-Taxi nach Leipzig”), Daniel Ezra (“Murdered by My Boyfriend,” Blood Cells).

EVP and Publisher, Open Road Integrated Media Interview ‪starts at 15:33 and ends at 43:28 "We are not an agency publisher. So we don't have any control over the consumer price. We set the digital list price, and we don't have control over the consumer price. And Amazon is free to discount it to whatever price they want. And I would also point out that we are very aggressive in the number of and the frequency of which we promote our books in price promotions."
