Send us Fan MailPeaches and Trent sit down with retired Brigadier General Tom Palenske, and this one turns into a masterclass on leadership without all the fake corporate nonsense.Palenske walks through one of the wildest career arcs we have had on the podcast: Goodyear factory kid from Topeka, Army National Guard helicopter door gunner, warrant officer, Huey and Black Hawk pilot, Air Force officer, MH-53 pilot, CV-22 squadron commander, wing commander, deployed special operations leader, and eventually a brigadier general who still sounds like a normal human being. He talks about what it was like flying the lead MH-53 during the rescue of then-Lieutenant Colonel Dave Goldfein after he was shot down over Serbia, why the MH-53 was the ugliest-coolest helicopter ever built, and why the CV-22 gets more hate than it deserves. He also tells stories about combat, fear, missiles, A-10s, fast ropes, and why sometimes the only plan is to press forward because the mission still needs doing. The conversation also gets into the stuff officers especially need to hear: rank and competence are not the same thing, people do not work for you, leadership means removing obstacles, accountability does not require cruelty, and your job is to help people reach their potential.Palenske also talks about suicide prevention, why airmen need more than one identity, how fellowship builds resiliency better than another useless CBT, why commanders should get out of their offices and talk to people, and why real connection matters more than another policy memo. The episode wraps with his unexpected run for office in Kansas, his view of politics, his love for his wife Jaron and their family, and the one leadership lesson that keeps coming back: be good, take care of people, and leave a positive impact.Links:- OnesReady.com- OperatorTrainingSummit.com- palenske4kansas.comChapters:00:00 - Intro and Ones Ready01:05 - Be Like Tom01:34 - ATACLETE and Partner Discounts02:39 - Operator Training Summit Updates05:55 - Retired Brigadier General Palenske Joins07:34 - Why Airmen Loved Working With Him08:27 - Rank and Competence Are Not the Same09:20 - Enlisted, Officer, and Not Getting Weird10:46 - Eight General Officer Counselings11:53 - The Best Part of Being a General13:25 - From Topeka to the Army National Guard16:33 - Becoming a Helicopter Pilot18:16 - Joining the Air Force19:00 - AFSOC, MH-53s, and Combat Deployments20:20 - Goldfein Rescue and the Distinguished Flying Cross21:21 - CV-22s, Command, and Becoming a General23:02 - Goldfein Did Not Know Who Rescued Him26:02 - Missiles, Serbia, and Launching Without Perfect Comms29:15 - The A-10 Debrief29:53 - MH-53 Hovering and Fast Rope Abuse31:26 - Why the MH-53 Was Ugly but Awesome31:51 - In Defense of the CV-2233:13 - The CV-22 Combat Story36:28 - Mental Health Evacuations and Epic Fury38:16 - Are Young Airmen Really the Problem?39:48 - Training, Fear, and Combat Stress42:12 - Stress Inoculation Matters43:39 - Leadership Before Mental Health Referrals45:19 - Retiring Into Civilian Life46:05 - Running for Office in Kansas49:23 - Politics, Factions, and Doing the Work49:59 - Food Trucks, Slip-n-Slides, and Wing Culture52:18 - Walking Around and Talking to Airmen52:50 - Suicide Prevention Through Connection55:38 - Let Weird People Find Their People56:38 - Accountability With Compassion58:56 - Failing Without Being Defined by Failure01:00:49 - The One-Mistake Air Force Problem01:01:30 - The Four DUI Joke01:05:09 - Taking Care of Airmen01:05:46 - What Actually Matters When You Die01:07:04 - Jaron, Family, and Eating Indoors01:08:26 - Pelenske for Kansas01:10:16 - Why Can't We Just Be Good?01:10:57 - Final WrapSupport the showJoin this channel to get access to perks: HEREBuzzsprout Subscription page:  HERERegister for our Operator Training Summit:  OperatorTrainingSummit.comFind an Air Force Recruiter: AirForce.comCollabs:Ones Ready - OnesReady.com 18A Fitness - Promo Code:  ONESREADY ATACLete - Follow the URL (no promo code):  ATACLeteDanger Close Apparel - Promo Code:  ONESREADYDFND Apparel...

Connect With ChazTony Lamb grew up watching his father sell vacuum cleaners door to door and thought that was the pinnacle. He got a college degree, walked into a pharmaceutical sales interview, heard the number $36,000 a year, and drove straight back to the vacuum cleaner office to ask for the highest commission they would pay. Then one afternoon, his kids ran to a beat-up ice cream truck in their neighborhood, paid $22 for freezer-burned ice cream from a guy fresh out of prison, and Tony saw a gap. Two years of obsession later, he launched Kona Ice. Today Kona Ice is the largest food truck company in the world with over 1,700 units, has given back over $130 million to local communities, and spawned two additional brands. Tony did it with no debt, a clear lane, and a refusal to be anything other than the absolute best at what he does.In this conversation with Chaz Wolfe, Tony breaks down the origin story of Kona Ice, the difference between a small business owner and an entrepreneur, why pain and suffering are the best growth tools available, and what it actually takes to build a franchise that scales without you.Key Takeaways:Do not try to build a better hamburger at scale. Find the open niche, stick your foot in it, and become the undisputed best at that specific thing. Tony turned down every offer to brick-and-mortar Kona Ice and stayed in his lane. The gap between idea and action is where most businesses die. Tony talked about Kona Ice for two years before someone told him to do it or drop it. The moment the words "I'm going to do it" came out of his mouth, he was committed. If you need too much money personally to survive the early years, the business will never grow. Tony kept his personal debt load at zero, lived lean, and reinvested everything. That gave him the fortitude to build through the hard seasons. The entrepreneur and the small business owner are two completely different animals. A great small business owner who executes consistently is incredibly valuable. An entrepreneur who cannot execute is a liability. Know which one you are.Brand is not optional. A clean truck, a uniformed driver, and a reasonable price changed everything about how communities received Kona Ice. The opposite of a problem is not just the absence of the problem. It is a completely different experience.Pain and suffering are the prerequisites for real growth. Tony said the NVIDIA CEO told Stanford graduates he hoped they would have pain and suffering. Tony agreed. He intentionally launched new brands when things got comfortable because the discomfort is where the learning is.College is not the answer for everyone. The question is whether the education you are paying for will service the debt you incur to get it. Tony's kids never finished college and are all doing extremely well. The best proof your model works is when someone who is not like you runs it successfully. When the non-salesperson in Georgia started producing results with Kona Ice, Tony knew he had a real business.Wisdom is not built in a classroom. It is built by consuming knowledge relentlessly, getting around smart people, attending conferences, and staying humble enough to admit what you do not know.Family and business are not separate departments. Tony drove his kids through neighborhoods in the Kona truck, put his youngest daughter in a car seat in the front, and built the business from within his family's daily life.If you are a contractor business owner doing $1M+ and you feel stuck in the day-to-day, we built GTK for you.Through peer mastermind and 1:1 coaching, we help you:increase profitinstall real systemsbuild a team that runs the businessget your time backVisit www.gatheringthekings.com for information on how to apply.Connect with Chaz Wolfe (Host):WebsiteFacebookInstagramLinkedInYouTubeProfit Starts with Better Books!Clean books. Send us Fan MailTwelve years ago, two guys in a baby blue 1967 Chevy truck were blasting 90s hip-hop at a D.C. farmers market and slinging wood-fired pizza to anyone who'd listen. Today, that operation is closing in on 10 locations and building a national franchise. In this episode, we sit down with Chris Brady, co-founder and president of Timber Pizza Co. Chris and his partner Andrew Dana traded tech sales careers for a pizza oven in 2014, opened their first brick-and-mortar in D.C.'s Petworth neighborhood in 2016 and have since expanded across the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. Now he's focused on franchising the right way: slow, intentional and rooted in the same community-first values that started it all. Here's what Chris gets into:·         The origin story: Why he and Andrew walked away from tech sales, and how a Charlottesville pizza truck sparked the whole thing·         Timber's pizza style: Marrying New York-style crunch and hold with Neapolitan wood-fired chew, plus why provolone earns a spot in the cheese blend·         The 85/15 model: Keeping 85% of every Timber consistent while leaving 15% for local flair like regional craft beer and neighborhood decor·         The dough non-negotiable: Scratch-made recipe with a strict 48-hour proof at every single location, no exceptions·         Vetting franchise partners: Why integrity, a real operational plan and the right market matter more than the check that clears·         Building employee culture: Tip pooling across the house, wages above the tipped minimum and a "we've got your back" approach that's driven five to six year average tenure·         Advice for growing operators: Pay the pros, delegate your weaknesses early and be honest about where you're not the A player·         The road ahead: Staying committed to the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, with a goal of five to six new stores in 2026 to reach the 15 to 16 unit rangeShow Notes:Timber Pizza Co.Pizza Expo Columbus July 2026 issue of Pizza Today magazine

Margartia Gonzalez's food has always thrilled her family; so much so that it became a goal to open a food truck since they came to the United States from Jalisco in 2010. That dream was finally realized in 2023, and Omaha has absolutely fallen in love with the tacos, tortas, tamales, and especially the vampiro tacos coming off this truck! Hear the story of this family-run business and how they're using the food truck to share their culture with Omaha.

Empanadas, Food Trucks and Resilience: Gustavo Gutierrez on Building a Cuban Cafe Brand

This episode of I'm An Artist, Not A Salesman Podcast with host Luis Guzman features chef and entrepreneur Gustavo Gutierrez, a culinary force behind a growing Cuban cafe brand built from food trucks, late nights, and relentless experimentation. Gustavo's story moves from Union City kitchens and fine dining pressure cookers to building a multi-location food business rooted in culture, discipline, and survival instincts shaped long before he ever stepped into a professional kitchen. We get into street-to-chef transition, culinary school, Cirque-like fine dining, mentorship under tough chefs, learning systems, cost control, and why real restaurant training is more about repetition and problem solving than recipes. Gustavo breaks down how he learned speed, precision, and respect for ingredients while working brutal stations and long hours before applying those lessons to empanadas and Cuban sandwiches. Then the conversation shifts into entrepreneurship, pricing philosophy, and customer perception. Gustavo challenges the idea that food should be judged only by price, comparing it to luxury goods and explaining how quality ingredients, handmade masa, and protein-heavy empanadas come at a cost that reflects real labor and standards. We also explore leadership and ownership. Gustavo talks about running multiple food trucks, training staff, dealing with breakdowns, and staying composed when everything hits at once. From motor failures to last-minute shortages, he explains how business owners become problem solvers first and chefs second. One of the most powerful parts of the episode focuses on mindset, ego, and accountability. Gustavo opens up about cutting ties with destructive environments, learning when to step back from people he loves, and understanding that personal growth sometimes requires distance. He also reflects on entitlement culture, social media criticism, and how anonymous opinions rarely reflect real experience. The reality of fine dining kitchens and what most chefs never talk aboutBuilding empanadas from scratch, including handmade masa and protein-first recipesWhy pricing food is about ingredients, labor, and sustainability, not comparisonManaging food trucks, breakdowns, and unpredictable operations under pressureLeadership lessons from training staff and building trust in a kitchen teamThe shift from hustling in the streets to building structured business systemsHow ego, discipline, and accountability shape long-term successTo close, Gustavo and Luis reflect on growth, long-term vision, and what it means to build something that lasts beyond personal effort. From kitchen floors to business ownership, the conversation ties together creativity, discipline, and resilience as core ingredients for any entrepreneur trying to build without losing identity along the way. Listeners are left with a grounded look at what it really takes to scale a food brand while staying connected to culture and craft.Listeners who connect with this conversation can follow the journey of IAANAS Podcast as it continues highlighting creatives, chefs, and entrepreneurs who are building careers through skill, discipline, and lived experience rather than shortcuts. Each episode brings forward raw conversations that explore the realities behind food, business ownership, and creative independence. For updates, behind-the-scenes content, and new episode drops, stay connected with host Luis Guzman across platforms where he shares insights from ongoing interviews and day-to-day production.
