Donatas Genys didn't set out to launch Lithuania's first keeved cider. But after trips to England and Normandy, years of experimentation, and the planting of over 6,000 cider apple trees, that's exactly what he's doing. At Sodo Sidriné, located just a few kilometers from the city of Kaunus, Donatas is into a whole new era for cider Lithuania's cider revival Donatas Genys Cider Culture and Baltic Roots Lithuania has deep agricultural roots, but apple trees which at many of the homes are desired more for eating or making apple wine while vodka and beer under Soviet rule flourished. Note: Lithuania declared its independence from the Soviet Union on March 11, 1990, becoming the first Soviet republic to do so, an act made possible in part by the loosening of Soviet control under Gorbachev's Perestroika reforms. Donatas is using both local varieties like Auksis and imported cider apples such as Yarlington Mill, Harry Masters Jersey, and Marie Ménard. His orchard-first philosophy ensures every cider is estate grown and rooted in place. Keeving in Lithuania The hallmark of Sodo Sidrine's offerings is a naturally keeved cider. Donatas showcased his keeved cider at CiderCon 2025 and received a lot of praise from attendees, including this Cider Chat Producer Ria Windcaller. Genys admits it's the most labor-intensive process, but also the most rewarding. This method yields a semi-dry cider with natural sweetness and long-lasting complexity, a rarity in a country where most consumers only know industrial cider. A New Era for Lithuanian Cider With a production facility nearly complete, Genys is preparing to scale up. His vision includes: Sodo Cider Stainless steel fermentation A small tasting room with potential for expansion Fruit wines and hopped ciders to appeal to a wider audience Apple brandy aged in sherry casks for future release Inside Sodo Sidrine Despite legal gray areas (there's no craft cider license in Lithuania), Donatas is pushing forward — blending tradition, research, and experimentation with quiet determination. He expects his licensing process to be completed by the summer of 2025. Stay tuned! The NFL Draft may have dazzled TV viewers and diehard fans, but local businesses and food trucks faced a rough reality. John and Jim dissect the disconnect: with 600,000 visitors expected, many food vendors were left with excess stock, some losing big. "Cheese Curd Nick" joins to give his take on what worked and what didn't. Pittsburgh, take notes: balancing hype with realistic expectations is key. And remember, the crowd's focus is the draft, not local eats. What happens when you combine a couple of foolish beer nerds and a food wizard? Gold, Jerry... wait, that's not our show. What happens is anentertaining conversation with Chef Taylor Jones about his journey from food prepping for his kids to the successful business that is Burn Theory Fire Kitchen. Taylor joins hosts Nigel Woodberry and Nick Parker to spill the beans... errrrr totz, on his approach to food and what drives him to deliver "Instagram-worthy" trays to every customer at any of the three Kansas City area breweries offering up the goods from his kitchen — Diametric, Grains & Taps or Strange Days Brewing. Between sips, bites and off-topic banter, the conversation highlights the role food concepts play in the business of breweries and taprooms and reminds us, Nigel and Nick should've been eating during each of the previous 126 episodes. Prepare your ear holes — and your pie holes — this is a good one!
We talk NFL Draft but before that, we discuss the Guardians old logo being racist. How Box doesn't appreciate the NCAA Transfer Portal and the general movement of athletes from team to team. We also discuss the unbearable lightness of being... a Cleveland Browns fan. We go into the financials of a new Browns stadium and why that idea stinks. That ends up with us going buck and wild about the financials of this nation with us playing tariff tag. Ohio is making it easier for some individuals to get their license reinstated and maybe avoid suspension to begin with. Food Trucks are returning to Downtown Cleveland. In Story Time with Lunchbox Box, hanging with his brother, go out to eat but is charged a gratuity for a party of 3? That ain't right and is so weird so we discuss. Box also proudly avoided copping DQ and showed some self-control. Box also got in some Magic the Gathering which are always a fun time, until they aren't. Tee's oldest had his day in traffic court that left Tee's head spinning. Tee and his lady also went on a double date. We then head on down to Reddit for some AITA action that ends up throwing Box for a loop. Then we wrap the whole thing up with some entertainment recommendations for the week. The River Park Farmers Market recently faced backlash after excluding Asian food vendors from its events. The decision, attributed to complaints from onsite businesses, has sparked accusations of discrimination and cultural insensitivity. River Park management stated the move was to ensure market participants do not compete with existing tenants.
