(2016). The Roots of Nationalism: National Identity Formation in Early Modern Europe, 1600-1815.

Abstract: High levels of proinflammatory cytokines induce neurotoxicity and catalyze inflammation-driven neurodegeneration, but the specific release mechanisms from microglia remain elusive. We demonstrate that secretory autophagy (SA), a non-lytic modality of autophagy for secretion of vesicular cargo, regulates neuroinflammation-mediated neurodegeneration via SKA2 and FKBP5 signaling. SKA2 inhibits SA-dependent IL-1b release by counteracting FKBP5 function. Hippocampal Ska2 knockdown in mice hyperactivates SA resulting in neuroinflammation, subsequent neurodegeneration and complete hippocampal atrophy within six weeks. The hyperactivation of SA increases IL-1b release, initiating an inflammatory feed-forward vicious cycle including NLRP3-inflammasome activation and Gasdermin D (GSDMD)-mediated neurotoxicity, which ultimately drives neurodegeneration. Results from protein expression and co-immunoprecipitation analyses of postmortem brains demonstrate that SA is hyperactivated in Alzheimer's disease. Overall, our findings suggest that SKA2-regulated, hyperactive SA facilitates neuroinflammation and is linked to Alzheimer's disease, providing new mechanistic insight into the biology of neuroinflammation. Post By: Adam Turteltaub A Systems Improvement Agreement (SIA) comes at a time of crisis for a healthcare organization, one in which it may even risk being terminated by CMS. As Suzanne Gellner (LinkedIn), Principal, The Gellner Group explains, an SIA involves a lot of work that must be done quickly, typically within just 12 months. For organizations undergoing an SIA she recommends creating an oversight committee made up of C-Suite leaders and others with oversight of the service areas under the SIA. This will help make sure that these same service areas are accountable. The committee would ideally have each group meet with them monthly and provide status updates. Leadership support is critical, but so too is the support of middle managers. They are going to be the major change against, she explains, who understand what is happening on the front lines, and what leadership wants to see happen. They are also the individuals who will be coaching the staff into how to meet the goals of the SIA. To help the managers, take the time to learn what their likely pain points are, what their day-to-day work life looks like and what challenges they perceive. With that knowledge you can better demonstrate how the SIA initiatives will help them in their work. Done right, it can turn them into ambassadors for the changes the SIA requires. Suzanne also recommends taking a unit-by-unit approach rather than a system-wide approach to the SIA. Each service area is going to be different. The challenges and people will vary. As a result, it's essential to understand where they are and how the program will benefit them the best. In addition, once there is success in one unit, the others will likely notice, recognize the benefits and be more eager to implement the SIA. Listen in to learn more about how to successfully navigate an SIA in your organization.

Apropos 'the Tibetans': Reinier Langelaar's talk focuses on the mythical origins and the promotion of ethnicity in historical Tibet There are ongoing interdisciplinary debates concerning the age and origins of inter-regional collective identities. Although recent work on “ethnicity” and “nationalism” has repeatedly highlighted the role of religion and myth in nurturing large-scale communal identities even in the pre-modern period, the modernist paradigm – associated with authors such as Anderson, Hobsbawm and Gellner – still retains theoretical hegemony. In Tibetan studies, the history of the ethnic category of “the Tibetans” (bod pa) is yet to be thoroughly probed. This talk will explore the promise that historical Tibetan literature holds for these larger debates. It will touch on the central role of Buddhism and Buddhist myths in sustaining and fortifying the notion of “the Tibetans” (bod pa) in the pre-modern period, and make preliminary remarks on the salience of this identity across various regions of the Tibetan Plateau.

In Episode 1 of The B Side Podcast, hosts Stacy and Andy Best chat with Michelle Freeman and Connie Gellner, founders of the Kenny Chesney online fan tribe, Welcome to the Sandbar. You'll hear how they started their very popular group and learn how it grew to incorporate meaningful charity work and amazing group travel. If you're a Kenny Chesney fan, this episode is for you. Episode Highlights: Connie and Michelle started Welcome to the Sandbar because of their love of Kenny Chesney's music. They wanted a non-judgmental space to talk about all things Kenny and his music. The regular crowd thinks they're crazy for going to multiple Kenny Chesney concerts each year. The group started in 2013 and grew rapidly. Welcome to the Sandbar met a need other fan groups weren't filling. The group is more interactive. Connie and Michelle can get fans answers directly from Kenny's people. Connie and Michelle met at work in 2010 and it was immediate friendship. They discuss favorite venues. They like the Walmart amphitheater but their favorite is The Joint in Las Vegas. Tortuga is probably their least favorite venue because it is so crowded and Kenny doesn't do a full set there. The people in the group are true friends that help each other out. Lifelong friendships have been made through Welcome to the Sandbar. They talk about interacting with group members in person and how odd it feels that people want to have their pictures taken with them. They began raising money for charity through the group. When they accumulate signed items, they save them to raffle for charity. Michelle and Connie planned a St. John escape for Kenny fans who didn't think such a trip was possible or felt too exasperated by the planning process. For many people, this was the trip of a lifetime. These trips are about bringing people together with like interests and just enjoying the experience. Next year they hope to pick a new venue in a new location. Their advice for surviving the sandbar is to wear comfortable shoes, stay hydrated, and make sure you're OK with touching other sweaty people. They discuss different advantages to being at the back of the sandbar vs. up against the stage. 3 Key Points: Welcome to the Sandbar was created as a non-judgmental place for Kenny Chesney fans to connect to discuss all things Kenny and his music. The Welcome to the Sandbar group has expanded to include meetups and even trips with like-minded people across the country. If you want to get into the sandbar at one of Kenny's concerts, wear comfortable shoes, stay hydrated, and make sure you're comfortable being in close proximity to many people. From La Scala, 1953, under Carlo Maria Giulini, we hear Catalani's "La Wally" with Renata Tebaldi in the title role, Mario del Monaco as Hagenbach, Renata Scotto as Walter, Giangiacomo Guelfi as Gellner, and Giorgio Tozzi as Stromminger. (73 min.) The story is set in the Austrian Tyrol where the free-spirited but vulnerable Wally is in love with the handsome Giuseppe Hagenbach, the son of her father's implacable enemy. This leads to the inevitable disastrous conclusion. Act 1 The village of Hochstoff A shooting contest is being held in celebration of the 70th birthday of Wally's father, Stromminger. A hunting party arrives from the nearby village of Sölden led by Hagenbach. Old enmities quickly surface and a quarrel develops between Stromminger and Hagenbach, who trade threats and insults before Hagenbach is drawn away by his companions. Vincenzo Gellner has his own heart set on Wally and is quick to notice that during the quarrel she is clearly infatuated with her father's enemy. When left alone with Stromminger, he tells the old man of his suspicions. Recognising that Gellner is in love with his daughter, he insists that Wally agrees to marry him within a month or else leave his house forever. Wally retorts that she would rather take her chances in the Alpine snows than marry Gellner. Act 2 The Eagle Tavern at Sölden A year has passed; Stromminger has died and Wally has inherited his fortune. However, Hagenbach has become engaged to Afra, the landlady of the Eagle Tavern, and is apparently not interested in Wally. A festival is taking place in Sölden and Wally is drawn to the tavern knowing that Hagenbach will be there. Hagenbach is persuaded to accept a challenge to try to win a kiss from Wally. What begins as a game quickly develops into something more serious, and Hagenbach easily wins his wager. When Wally realises she has been the victim of a cynical bet, her jealousy and fury boil over. She turns to Gellner, who is also at the festival, and insists that if he loves her he must kill Hagenbach. Act 3 A ravine La Wally returns to her home. The anger she felt has now subsided and she wishes she could take back her words. At that moment there is a knock at her door. It is Gellner, who describes how under cover of darkness he was able to set upon Hagenbach and hurl him into a deep ravine. Wally is horrified and hurries to the ravine in the hope of saving Hagenbach, even though she believes he loves Afra. She herself goes down a rope to rescue him and successfully raises his unconscious body back to the surface. Act 4 High in the Alps Lonely and depressed, Wally has climbed into the mountains above the village. Her only friend, Walter, has followed and urges her to come down for the Christmas festivities and reminds her of the dangers of avalanches. She sends him away and contemplates her imminent death. Wally hears another voice. It is Hagenbach, who has recovered from his injuries and come to confess his love. The lovers are reconciled and Hagenbach goes to find a safe path back down the mountain. He shouts up to Wally, but the noise of his call sets off an avalanche which carries him away. Wally stands for a moment on the edge of the precipice before hurling herself down to her death.
