How Portsmouth Mayor Deaglan McEachern Pays His Rent on Earth

Deaglan McEachern didn't want to be the mayor of Portsmouth. But, as a lifelong lover of people and politics, he couldn't help but join the City Council in his beloved hometown. Believing it's our duty to give back to the world that gives us so much, McEachern is devoted to use his privilege to enrich the lives of those in our sacred community. The mayor title, according to him, is simply a vessel for him to carry out his basic responsibility as a human. In today's conversation from a random office (we got kicked out of his) at Portsmouth City Hall, Portsmouth Mayor Deaglan McEachern and I discuss: Governor Sununu's heroics (00:00) McEachern's extensive education (03:26) Professional rowing career (08:47) Meeting his wife in NYC (13:47) Balancing his other job (22:50) Why he's the mayor of Portsmouth (27:22) The biggest sacrifice he's made (33:07) What's your mission? (39:13) Deaglan McEachern is the mayor of Portsmouth. Elected in 2021, McEachern also holds a full-time job at a tech company called Smarsh. The son of former Assistant Mayor Paul McEachern and nephew of former mayor Mary McEachern Keenan, Deaglan was born and raised on the Seacoast. A graduate of UC Berkeley, McEachern also studied at the University of Cambridge in England. Additionally, he spent 10 years as a professional rower! The New Hampshire Senate has passed HB1205, which restricts transgender girls from participating in girls' sports in public schools from grades 5 to 12. The bill, supported by Republicans and opposed by Democrats, also prohibits athletic associations like the NHIAA from addressing complaints about gender segregation enforcement in sports. Additionally, it allows students harmed by non-compliance to sue schools. Governor Sununu has expressed agreement with the bill's goals but has not confirmed if he will sign it. Advocates urge the public to contact the Governor's office to support the bill. The Cobb County School Board in Georgia, facing backlash for removing books with sexually explicit content from school libraries, has stood firm. Since September 2023, when explicit materials were first removed, critics have pushed to oust Superintendent Chris Ragsdale. Despite this, in early 2024, the board reviewed 23 additional books for explicit content. Superintendent Ragsdale maintains a strict stance against such materials in education, emphasizing a moral binary in the debate. Supporters are urged to contact him and board members to express backing.A federal appeals court ruled that Maryland's Montgomery County Public Schools do not have to let parents opt their K-5 children out of LGBTQ-related curriculum. The 2-1 decision by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court's denial of a preliminary injunction, arguing that exposure to contrary ideas, even for religious reasons, does not violate the First Amendment. The court stated that this exposure is part of the compromise of public schooling. This decision affects parents from various faiths and a parental rights group.California's Assembly Bill 1955, introduced by Assemblyman Chris Ward, prohibits school districts from mandating staff to notify parents if a student appears to be transgender. This bill aims to prevent "forced outing" of LGBTQ students and protect employees from district retaliation. It includes provisions for counseling and mental health services for affected students and families. Having undergone significant amendments, AB1955 will require further approvals in both the Senate and Assembly before potentially being signed by the governor.Affiliate Shoutout: Sara Olsen Local Affiliate Leader Affiliate Location: Galesville Ettrick Trempealeau, Wisconsin  Bio: Sara became a PRE affiliate because her goal is to leave a legacy not only for her kids and future grandkids but for all kids! SERIES 2 EPISODE 158: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Seriously? Donald Trump fell asleep at his trial yesterday. First trial. First day. First session. Fell asleep. Upright. At the trial that could end with him going to prison. During the trial. But it's Biden with the stamina problem. Biden, who's too old. Trump fell asleep. At the defense table. But we should be worried about Biden. Trump fell asleep during discussion of his own tweets, his own threats, his own lawyers' insistence that this is the greatest witchhunt and Abraham Lincoln got off easily compared to this and whatever else they said. “His mouth going slack and his head drooping onto his chest,” she added later in the paper.  If this had happened to Biden – if this had happened to Biden at wherever HE might be that could be, what, one one-thousandth as serious as Trump's trial involving PRISON TIME – if this had happened to Biden it would be the only thing on the news, the only thing on television, the only thing on the internet, the only thing in all forms of extra-sensory communication. Don't worry the media will go back to telling voters that what they should be worried about is how sleepy President Biden is. And don't worry, Don Snore-leone wasn't sleeping for HIMSELF – he was sleeping for the sake of the January 6th hostages. The other true headline from the trial is that this is NOT a trial about Trump paying off a porn star to keep their sex secret from his wife or even from the public. This is a trial about Trump interfering with the 2016 election by illegally suppressing facts that the voters should've KNOWN and JUDGED for themselves. Voters in the General Election. Voters in the primary. Trump is NOT on trial for Hush Money. Trump is NOT on trial for banging a porn star. Trump is on trial for his favorite crime, the one he never stops talking about. TRUMP… IS ON TRIAL… FOR ELECTION INTERFERENCE. This happened as Biden's poll streak (ahead in Politico, cuts Trump's NY Times lead from 5 to 1) is so dominant now even some reporters have noticed. I mean Jonathan Martin wrote: "I'll say it: there's an elite tendency to assign Trump a better chance to win than he merits, to show THIS TIME you're not out of touch." Of course he didn't mean reporters. He meant foreign diplomats. Because you've seen them on TV: America's political reporters clearly don't own MIRRORS! B-Block (25:49) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Five of them! Elon Musk continues to be Russia's streetwalker (and Marjorie Bitter Greene helps). CNN cancels its top news show (Charles Barkley and Gayle King). Another RFK Jr staffer beclowns him (and turns out to have been pardoned by Trump and seems to still be working for him). Comedian Rob Schneider was so beyond-the-pale that even Republican Senate staffers walked out of his set. And 48 hours later, Governor Sununu of New Hampshire continues to prove he is our Franz Von Papen, the cynical German politician who brokered the deal to launch the 3rd Reich because it was ONLY politics. C-Block (36:37) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: The passing of Fritz Peterson is marked by many as the end to an extraordinary sports story of half a century ago where New York Yankees teammates "traded lives" (and, incidentally, wines). By others it's the loss of the statistically-best pitcher ever to call original Yankee Stadium home. To me, he was the man from whom I took away his bid for a no-hitter. Seriously.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

EPISODE 225: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:42) SPECIAL COMMENT:  Donald Trump has put the lives of tens of thousands of American service men and women at risk – all around the world – by stealing the documents. Donald Trump doesn't give a damn if American troops live or die. Donald Trump HATES THE TROOPS. And why aren't we hearing that? Bill Barr, The National Review, Governor Sununu, and The National Review blistered Trump. Scott Jennings, the rabid CNN conservative? Jennings hit a point that in normal times would have been enough for the Republicans to have already thrown Trump overboard, for all time? “If you had a son or a daughter who was serving…in a hostile place and you thought maybe their information was in a document that could have been picked off the friggin floor, do you know how this could impact a military family? The thing is when you're commander in chief, you have this responsibility to the military and the people who serve. It's sort of offensive to me actually that we would be so cavalier with the information that could possibly put our people in jeopardy.” And if there is anything more shocking than the number of anti-Trump statements ESPECIALLY from lawyers and from HIS lawyers – it is the fact that in normal times the Democrats would have taken the essence of Scott Jennings' point: TRUMP PUT THE LIVES OF THOUSANDS OF AMERICAN SERVICE MEN AT RISK, and they would have hung that fact around the necks of not just Trump and everybody close to him, but around the necks of EVERY Republican who didn't condemn him and the Democrats would be screaming “Why does Donald Trump hate the troops?” and “Why does Ron DeSantis hate the troops?” and “Why does Lindsey Graham hate the troops?” and if the POINT ITSELF wasn't decisive enough, the Democrats could follow it up with the new CBS News poll that asks is there a national security risk if Trump kept nuclear and military documents and the answer was YES, Trump put the National Security at Risk, YES… from 38 percent OF REPUBLICANS. Why in the chorus of sheep bleating about Trump's rights and Hillary Clinton this and weaponization that, are virtually ALL the dissenting voices… Republicans? Where are the Democrats? Where are the Democrats talking about the grave risk Trump was and is to National Security? Where are the Democrats demanding that he will be president again only over their dead bodies? Where are the Democrats saying no matter how this trial turns out, Trump definitely put American troops at risk for the sake of his ego, and he may have gotten American troops KILLED, and he may STILL get American troops KILLED? Where is the outrage? Axios reports the Democratic National Committee asked Democrats in the Committee to no-comment the indictment. The PRESIDENT is no-commenting the indictment. The entire hierarchy of the Democratic Party is staying off-stage because of some kind of nonsensical, 1975-notion that to speak out against Trump's criminality and treachery and treason is to somehow grasp a third rail, that because if you speak up for truth and honesty and Americanism and you are a politician you have somehow POLITICIZED truth and honesty and Americanism. Mr. President, House Democrats, Senate Democrats, we elected you to stand up for the rule of law, against Trump. Proclaim it and exult in it. Your silence will be mistaken for weakness. Kick him when he's down - and sing the anthem while you do it. B-Block (20:05) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: How lucky is the Glenn Beck ally who confronted Brittney Griner in an airport? She could've snapped him in half. Conor McGregor TRIED to snap an NBA mascot in half. And Fox and Friends comic relief Brian Kilmeade thinks David Beckham had to learn English when he moved to America. (23:43) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Join me in celebrating the one year anniversary of Minet. C-Block (39:20) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Troubadour in New York (40:30) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Just last week a new doctor asked me if long ago I had fallen off a cliff or something and I had to explain to him - Yes! That'swhen he learned there was a new treatment available that was just approved by theF-D-A, thanks to a clinical trial.● It's a radio-pharmaceutical, which means it is a nuclear medicine. It's a drug that isinjected and targets the radiation precisely to the tumor.● Paul was the first patient at Dana-Farber to undergo this cutting-edge treatment, going to the Chestnut Hill location to receive it.● Paul and his wife say when they learned about this new treatment option, they felthope and were thankful that Dana-Farber can offer it and appreciative of the scienceand research that made this treatment possible.● In his spare time, in addition to staying active, he loves to travel. Prostate cancer facts● Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men (after skin cancer).● The American Cancer Society's estimates for prostate cancer in the United States for2022 are about 268,490 new cases of prostate cancer.● About 1 man in 8 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.● Prostate cancer begins when cells in the prostate gland start to grow out of control. The prostate is a gland found only in males.● Almost all prostate cancers are adenocarcinomas. These cancers develop from thegland cells (the cells that make the prostate fluid that is added to the semen).● Most prostate cancers are found early, through screening. Early prostate cancerusually causes no symptoms. Symptoms can include problems urinating, blood inurine or semen, pain in the hips, back, or chest, and weakness or numbness in thelegs or feed.● New research on gene changes linked to prostate cancer is helping scientists betterunderstand how prostate cancer develops. This could make it possible to designmedicines to target those changes. In 2012, the New Hampshire legislature passed the Opportunity Scholarship Act, establishing tax credits for donations from businesses to scholarship organizations to allow low- and moderate-income families to choose the schools that best fit their children's needs. Under the act, Education Tax Credit scholarships can be used by children attending private schools, out-of-district public schools, and homeschools. On January 1, 2013, the Network for Educational Opportunity (NEO) became the first scholarship organization eligible to administer Education Tax Credit scholarships. During the 2013-14 school year, NEO received more than 1,000 applications and awarded scholarships worth $128,000 to 103 New Hampshire students. In its first three years of managing Education Tax Credit scholarships, NEO helped 205 New Hampshire children using scholarships worth more than $300,000. On January 1, 2016, the Children's Scholarship Fund New Hampshire took over the administration of the Education Tax Credit scholarships formerly managed by NEO. Kate Baker, NEO's Executive Director, became a CSF employee. CSF is a national organization with a network of partner programs, each providing scholarships that empower parents to choose schools they otherwise could not afford. Since its inception in 1998, CSF has awarded more than $934 million in scholarships to the families of 191,500 low-income children. In June 2021, the New Hampshire legislature passed the Education Freedom Accounts (EFA) program, and Governor Sununu signed it into law as part of the new state budget. The EFA program allows families with incomes up to 300 percent of the poverty level to direct a portion of the funds spent by the state for their child's education to private school tuition, online learning programs, and other educational expenses as they choose. On August 4th, 2021, CSF was selected by the NH Department of Education and confirmed by the NH Executive Council to administer the just passed Education Freedom Accounts program for the 2021-22 school year.

Paul and award-winning New Hampshire journalist Kevin Landrigan discuss the end of New Hampshire's 2022 legislative session and Governor Sununu's vetos. The Governor provoked the dismay of ultra-conservative members of his own party rejecting the legislature's attempt at Congressional redestricting, attempt to usurp the Governor's state of emergency powers and striking down a bill that would have banned schools from instituting mask mandates. They also cover some changes to the state's first ever abortion ban which went into effect at the beginning of the year, which were mildly praised by pro-choice advocates.

Paul has a spirited discussion with Kayla Montgomery, Vice President of Public Affairs for Planned Parenthood of Northern New England. They talk about the efforts of the Republican controlled New Hampshire legislature and Executive Council to defund Planned Parenthood and other family health care providers, and about Governor Sununu's shifting statements on women's reproductive health, claiming he is pro-choice while signing New Hampshire's first abortion ban into law and stating publicly that he has done more for the pro-life movement than anyone. And, they discuss the unconscionable ban on abortion which went into effect on January 1 of this year that, for the first time in New Hampshire, limits a women's right to choose, criminalizes doctors, contains no exceptions for rape and incest, and represents a stunning assault on New Hampshire's traditional and popular respect for an individual's right to privacy.

You're listening to the American Democracy Minute, keeping YOUR government by and for the people.Partial good news on the badly gerrymandered Congressional districts in NH. The full NH Senate passed SB 52 last Thursday, but Governor Sununu issued a statement after the vote and signaled he would veto the bill when it reached his desk. The gerrymandered Executive Council map from 2010 received no changes and will stay the same for the next 10 years, thus receiving an “interim study” recommendation from the committee. The House maps have passed both chambers, and the Senate voting maps, drawn to guarantee at least a 15-vote Republican majority, await a hearing in the NH House Election Law committee.Overshadowed by the Governor's veto announcement was SB 418, which was passed the Senate Election Law & Municipal Affairs committee. This establishes a provisional ballot in NH, potentially disenfranchising thousands of voters who use NH's qualified voter affidavit system. Euphemistically called “Affidavit Ballots,” these ballots require the voter to return with documentation within 10 days for the vote to count. This bill targets students, many of whom use NH's Same-day registration system. As with so many Big Lie bills being proposed, SB 418 disenfranchises far more honest voters than the tiny number of dishonest ones.Granny D said, “Democracy is not something we HAVE, it's something we DO.” For the American Democracy Minute, I'm  Brian Beihl.

You're listening to the American Democracy Minute, keeping our government by and for the people. After months of promising an open and fair process, the NH Senate Election Law Committee voted last Monday to recommend two rigged voting districts for U.S. Congress and NH Executive Council to the full Senate. The NH Senate will vote on the gerrymandered maps on Thursday, March 17.Amendments to these maps have been rumored for months, but Republican party hardliners pressured the Election Law Committee to make no changes, despite almost universal condemnation in hearings in the NH House and Senate committees. The Congressional map gerrymanders to make both districts uncompetitive, guaranteeing the outcome of the election. The Executive Council map is a repeat of the 2010 “Dragon District,” which packs liberal-leaning towns into District 2, leaving adjoining districts more conservative. While Governor Chris Sununu has made statements asking for a redrawing of the maps, there is no evidence that the Governor's office has made counter proposals. It looks increasingly as if his comments were orchestrated for political cover rather than protection on the voters. Whether floor amendments will be proposed Thursday is an open question. If the maps are approved, they head to Governor Sununu's desk. Granny D said, “Democracy is not something we HAVE, it's something we DO.” For the American Democracy Minute, I'm  Brian Beihl.

Your Identity is getting Stolen.  Jack and I discuss the rise of ID Theft,  and what Governor Chris Sununu did in regard Credit Freezes for NH Citizens. When you get down to it, the problem is with the use of our Social Security Numbers. Technology is working on a solution using Blockchain Technology but it is not there yet. ---- Below is a rush transcript of this segment, it might contain errors. Airing date: 06/11/2018 Identity Theft, NH Law and Social Security Numbers Transcript: Craig Peterson:[00:00:00] Craig Peterson here, New Hampshire just passed a law, in fact, the governor signed it on Friday that provides you with the ability to get a free credit freeze if you are the subject of a data breach. Now this is interesting in fact the way it's set up it's actually the first in the nation and no one else has a law quite like this not going to have to dig into this little more New Hampshire kind of snuck that passed me without me knowing but that's what we talked about this morning with Jack Heath. The bottom line is your identity is getting stolen, and there's not a lot you can do about it. We get into social security numbers and what's the new technology that might stop all of this mess. You know there are things you can do to stop malware. But how about if the data is stolen and you have no control over it. It wasn't malware on your computer but it was some other company some big company or the government, in many cases. MAN OH MAN Here we go Jack. [00:01:09] Joining us on the Autofair listener line for a tech talk update is Craig Peterson. His show airs on Saturdays on I Heart news talk stations. Craig Good morning.  [00:01:18] Hey Good morning Jack. This whole thing about this bill that was passed and signed into law by John Sununu is really interesting. You know some of the specifics behind identity theft, but it's a really big deal.  [00:01:32] Yep, you just you just gave his father credit for signing the bill. The governor is Chris Sununu  [00:01:36] Yeah, yeah, Chris and his father would take the credit.  [00:01:41] Sorry wrong Governor Sununu.  [00:01:44] Tell us what you think about it. Tell us what your opinion of it is. [00:01:48] Well, I haven't seen the bill and I'm sorry I've fallen down on that I wouldn't have looked that up and read the actual wording of the bill but when we're looking at identity theft, it is a huge deal. And it happened to me just a couple of weeks ago. [00:02:04] You know we have this big Equifax breach last year which is a very big deal right. And I was part of that breach that happened Equifax. So, I started monitoring my credit report and monitoring the dark web and certainly out on the dark web. My information was there, yeah thanks Equifax and whomever else. But what happened, was, I got an alert on my credit saying my credit score has changed. So, I went online and I started to poke around a little bit and looked at my credit score and my credit report. Because I had signed up for a service where you pay a small amount monthly and it tells you when your credit report changes and lets you have a quick look at it. And, it doesn't bring your credit score down for doing it. Lo and behold there is a credit card that I do not have and that it had something like a 400 dollar balance on it. [00:03:04] It was 60 days past to so I immediately knew. Wait a minute. [00:03:11] I didn't open this credit card. That's not my balance right. And it was hurting my credit. And that's how I found out about it.  [00:03:20] It’s a very simple easy way to tell all of that, but you often won’t get notified. [00:03:26] No, well I wasn't notified, other than I have a credit report being in place, right.  Having a credit monitoring service is something everybody should do, anyway. But, yeah nobody told me. Hey, listen did you open this X Y Z credit card. Right. That just didn't happen. And when you get right down to the bottom of all of this, Jack, the big problem is our social security numbers right. They were guaranteed that they will never be used for anything other than Social Security. But now our Social Security number is used for everything from our taxes all the way through getting health insurance right. It's just this universal number. [00:04:09] We don't have a good solution for what could replace this whole security number for with. [00:04:16] There was an Eastern European country that tried something new. They tried to use some blockchain technology. There was another attempt where they had a card that was one of these smartcards kind like your credit card. If you look on it now it's got that little chip in it. And that little chip has an encrypted handshake it can do with the bank. And that helps to tell them it's really you. So, they came up with the special chip they put it on a card that uses a universal identity. And this is just last year. It wasn't two months before that whole system was hacked. So, you know bottom line here it's one thing to be able to know and hopefully recover your credit. In my case that was pretty simple because it was just a credit card. Someone wasn't pretending they were me. In the worst case, what happens is people use other people's identities when they have been arrested for a crime. And then, you're driving down the road, Jack, and you get pulled over and it's a felony stop and the police have you laying out in the middle of the road. They've got their guns drawn because you supposedly committed a crime right and you didn't. And, now you have to prove it wasn't you. Usually, you can do that without a lot of trouble. But, you're still the subject of a felony arrest. This whole thing is really, really, crazy and I think this move towards in NH to help to you know will help seniors and younger people both of those groups are the ones most likely to suffer the most. [00:05:57] But, to make it so that you can start that road to recovery afterward, is a good thing. I think it will be years before we finally have a solution. Getting rid of a social security number moving toward something that's more secure by using some of these technologies are looking good but it is not there yet.  [00:06:18] All right Craig, the other thing if you want to make a lot of boatload of money and I don't know the answer, real quickly. But the other thing is most people cannot remember, they might remember the last four numbers their social but, they can’t remember all these other names and passwords. Trust me they cannot. And someone's going to figure out something to do with that. Anyway, thank you, Craig. [00:06:34] Hey you're welcome. There is a free report on Passwords and Password security available on my Web site.  [00:06:38] Cool. This week on The Freecast, we discuss the $36M bill the State of NH has due to a hospital lawsuit, no free speech for you in Scotland, and Governor Sununu's 10 year energy plan. Freecast S03E03: $36M Hospital Bill and 10 Years of Energy Featuring Hosts: Matt Carano, Tom Hudson, and Nick Boyle Engineered by: Matt Carano Produced by: Tom Hudson, Matt Carano, and Nick Boyle News State of NH $36 million in the hole due to hospital lawsuit “Under federal law, hospitals that treat significant numbers of Medicaid or uninsured patients may receive “disproportionate share hospital” (DSH) payments – state and federal funds that help them recoup the higher costs associated with those patients. Exactly how much each hospital receives comes down to how many services it can count as “uncompensated care.”” Under the current federal law, hospitals can double bill, i.e. if a patient is on medicaid and pays, but still requests money from the state as if they hadn't paid. http://www.concordmonitor.com/New-Hampshire-facing-$36-million-budget-shortfall-after-hospital-lawsuit-16846848 Count Dankula (Mark Meechan) loses free speech case, ordered to pay fine https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/count-dankula-nazi-pug-salutes-mark-meechan-fine-sentenced-a8317751.html Governor Sununu releases 10 year energy plan On average each NH resident spent $3,934 on energy in 2015 Goals listed in the plan 1. Prioritize cost-effective energy policies. 2. Ensure a secure, reliable, and resilient energy system. 3. Adopt all-resource energy strategies and minimize government barriers to innovation. 4. Maximize cost-effective energy savings. 5. Achieve environmental protection that is cost-effective and enables economic growth. 6. Government intervention in energy markets should be limited, justifiable, and technology neutral. 7. Encourage market-selection of cost-effective energy resources. 8. Generate in-state economic activity without reliance on permanent subsidization of energy. 9. Maximize the economic lifespan of existing resources while integrating new entrants on a levelized basis. 10. Protect against neighboring states' policies that socialize costs. 11. Ensure that appropriate energy infrastructure is able to be sited while incorporating input and guidance from stakeholders. Highlights of the plan: Pro nuclear energy, renewable energy should only be considered if it's cost effective and doesn't rely on subsidies and only on market selection, “It should not be controversial to seek an ultimate outcome where production technologies are not subsidized by ratepayers or taxpayers. Uneconomic resources would not exist absent subsidization, yet those same resources may be wise investments in the near future when cost curves are more favorable. The end goal with energy infrastructure should be unaided market competition where the technology competes on the merits, not one that depends on taxpayer support.” A quote in regards to passenger vehicles, “Government should avoid speculative investments with taxpayer dollars focused on a fraction of the consumer base, but may be able to leverage non-taxpayer funding sources to spur private investment.” “New Hampshire policymakers should pursue market-based mechanisms for achieving cost-effective energy, while avoiding preferential quotas and mandates.” Much of the energy is dependent on the rest of New England because it's all under the same grid. http://www.unionleader.com/column-A-new-energy-strategy-for-New-Hampshire_ https://www.nh.gov/osi/energy/programs/documents/2018-10-year-state-energy-strategy.pdf Amazon Park in Rochester evacuated due to a standoff My old neighbor owns that park, this is what he told me. Tenants were originally evacuated up to our rec-hall where my office is located. We had a growing group of tenants from 330 until around 6. Then the police officer came in and told everyone they would have to evacuate the park. Tenants said “can we go get our cars, etc” and the police officer literally said “no, those with cars up front leave now, those without cars start walking through the woods and then onto Whitehouse Road and just head towards Briar Ridge”... so here we are with 70 tenants... about 30 of them got out using cars up front, the others just started walking down the street.  I left the park and drove all the way around up to the Dunkin Donuts that is up near Hilltop Chevy. There I met about 15 tenants that had been prevented from returning home from work or afternoon errands. At that point a police officer was discussing with the bus drivers about getting 2 busses to send around to pick up tenants. At this time I also received information that the Briar Ridge center that they had originally told people to start walking to was not open. So it's 40 degrees out and people are just standing outside in the rain. The bus company gave the police the go ahead that they would be able to have 2 busses go and that they had changed the location to the Rochester Community Center. So at that point I told my tenants located at the Dunkin Donuts parking lot to head to the Rochester Community Center and I left with my car to head over to Briar Ridge. When I got over there there was about 20 people standing outside and 5 cars. I told all those with cars to pile as many people into their cars as possible and head over to the Rochester Community Center. I loaded my car with 3 tenants (all I could fit). After this there were still 10 people without a ride. So I told them to walk over to the intersection of Whitehouse Road and wait at the Corner for the bus and I would be back. I proceeded to bring the 3 tenants to the Rochester Community Center. At that point I got a call from my father (who was still at Amazon) that police needed additional help evacuating tenants cause the busses had already left yet there were more tenants coming up from around the park. So myself and another tenant returned to Amazon Park (it's around 730pm now). Once again filled my vehicle and the other vehicle. My father and one of our employees also filled their vehicle and then we once again drove to the Rochester Community Center. At this point we have about 60-70 people at the Rochester Community Center. I walk in and it's an empty room with metal. Folding chairs with tenants just sitting. It's now 8pm. No Red Cross, no food/drinks for people, no blankets. Many of these people have been standing outside in 40 degree weather with rain for hours at this point. Many have had to walk a considerable distance. These people have no access to their medicine or food which they had to leave in their trailer. I was honestly shocked as to why emergency services had not been called in but understood that they were dealing with so much going on with the actual barricade situation. So my father went and bought like 35-40 large “Little Caesar's” pizzas to feed the tenants. Another tenant let someone borrow their inhaler etc. If my father hadn't bought food idk if the tenants would have even had dinner that night. A lot of them have diabetic issues etc so they really dropped the ball on that part. Around 830 I left and headed to Qual Drive where I talked with one of the officers about the ongoing developments inside the park and also talked to fosters. At that point officer Danie told me they had another 2 tenants up at Dunkin Donuts that needed to be transported and didn't know if I could do it. I told him of course and left for Dunkin Donuts where I picked them up. On my drive back to the Rochester Community Center one of my tenants that was sitting on Qual Drive in their vehicle called and told me they heard 12-13 large bangs (8:50 pm). When I got back to the Rochester Community Center pizza had just arrived so I helped pass out the food to the tenants. I returned to Qual Drive from 9:30-11 where I personally heard another 5 large bangs and then I heading back to the Community Center for the remaining hour. A little after midnight (still no blankets provided, no water etc to tenants) we received information that they had gotten the suspect and that we could return residents back to the rec-hall and then they would be released in groups back to their trailers. So they loaded up the 2 busses and I took a tenant and headed back. Got back to Amazon around 12:40pm and tenants were allowed to return to trailers around 1am http://www.unionleader.com/article/20180420/NEWS03/180429933/0/SEARCH Marsy's Law NH Constitutional amendment CACR 22 http://www.gencourtmobile.com/2018/CACR22 Advertisements on facebook It is marketed as “Marsy's Law for New Hampshire is dedicated to the cause of ensuring that crime victims' rights are codified in New Hampshire constitutional law.” NH already has a bill of rights for victims which is more inclusive than the proposed Marsy's Law RSA: 21-M:8-k http://www.gencourtmobile.com/RSA/Section/21-M_8-k As proposed, Marsy's law would assume guilt, violating due process and innocent until proven guilty. http://stopmarsyslawnh.org/faq/   Events Freecoast Liberty Outreach Meetup Dover - 1st Thursday Exeter - 2nd Thursday Hampton - 3rd Thursday Rochester - 4th Thursday Wild Card! - 5th Thursday Freecoast Festival (freecoast.org/festival) Dash sponsors FFest Sept 7th through the 9th in Portsmouth, NH Tickets on sale now! With the war not yet over, they begged the assembly for assistance in quelling the unrest, claiming that “it is impossible for [New Hampshire] to comply with the requisitions of Congress . . . while this dispute remains unsettled.” On October 11, Vermont's legislature gathered in Charlestown on the eastern side of the river, an insult to the New Hampshire government, which claimed that territory as its own. A week later Congress finally resolved to pressure Vermont into returning the 38 rebelling New Hampshire towns and into rescinding its claims to territory east of the Connecticut River as a prerequisite to Vermont's admission to the Union as the 14th state. When no further action had been taken by January 1782, George Washington, then commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, wrote encouraging Vermont to return the towns to New Hampshire, pointing out that such a boundary encroachment would set an undesirable precedent for the future. The New Hampshire legislature issued a proclamation on January 12 declaring the western towns to be in a state of rebellion, threatening military action, and requiring all persons who had been involved in any way with the controversy to sign a declaration within 40 days acknowledging that New Hampshire extended to the Connecticut River and promising to become good New Hampshire citizens. In February 1782 the Vermont legislature complied and renounced jurisdiction over the rebellious towns. Two years later, Hanover became the last such town to capitulate. WHO The leaders of New Hampshire's western rebellion were Elisha Payne of Lebanon and John Wheelock and Bezaleel Woodward of Hanover, the son and son-in-law of Dartmouth founder Eleazar Wheelock. They organized the reaction against the new New Hampshire government by gathering together members of the committees of safety of the various Grafton County towns, forming a group known as the United Committees, but more informally as the “college party,” in recognition of the prominent role of Dartmouth in the protest. WHERE The 38 “rebellious” towns were located in western New Hampshire in what were then Grafton and Cheshire counties (the latter including what is now Sullivan County). The Connecticut River runs between these counties and the easternmost regions of what was to become Vermont. The towns in these counties, like those on the western side of the river, were settled mostly by people from Connecticut and Massachusetts rather than from the eastern parts of New Hampshire. All of the towns were beyond the bounds of the original New Hampshire grant to John Mason. The Connecticut River Valley was, and remains to some degree, a distinct cultural region, with close social, economic, religious, and political connections among the people along the length of the river as well as on both sides. By contrast, the Upper Connecticut Valley's ties with either New Hampshire or New York, the governments that traditionally claimed the territory, were weak. WHY The western part of New Hampshire had been underrepresented in the provincial government, and the first (1776) state constitution did not improve the situation. Unlike in Connecticut where many of the residents of the western towns originated, the new constitution did not allow each town a delegate, basing representation instead solely on population. In fact, the 68 towns in the two western counties shared just 21 representatives. Residents there felt that the new government did not recognize the sovereignty of the town corporation and that it continued to favor seacoast interests. They felt, moreover, that the seat of government should be more centrally located. Almost simultaneously with a growing desire in these towns to free themselves from the New Hampshire government, the towns west of the Connecticut River declared their independence from New York in January 1777, and the new constitution of Vermont guaranteed each town at least one representative. The western New Hampshire leaders, who were generally well-educated, often with Dartmouth connections, considered the Declaration of Independence to have terminated all political associations that originated with the Crown. The towns, which were entities with perpetual charters and thus not dependent on the pleasure of the King, were returned thereby to a “state of nature,” making them free either to form new connections or to remain independent. Due to early settlement patterns, people throughout the Connecticut Valley shared cultural connections despite being geographically divided by the river and despite the King's determination in 1764 that the Connecticut River was the boundary between New Hampshire and New York. The underlying goal of the rebelling towns was to avoid political separation from the people on the opposite side of the river with whom they shared a common heritage, and their various attempts at merging show that they didn't care in the end whether they became a part of New Hampshire or Vermont as long as the two sides of the river could remain together. IMPACT The rebellion in western New Hampshire has been called perhaps the most serious of the smaller revolutions that took place within the American Revolution. The settlement of the dispute permanently determined New Hampshire's western boundary with Vermont, and in 1791 Vermont became the nation's 14th state. Yet Vermont's relinquishing of the rebelling towns did not immediately end the decades of tension between the western frontier towns of New Hampshire and the state's older eastern towns. Although in an attempt at reconciliation, New Hampshire officials gave prominent residents of the Connecticut Valley government positions, several individuals from the rebellious towns interrupted New Hampshire court proceedings at Keene in September 1782 because of the exclusion of Vermont courts. After the leaders of this protest were arrested, rumors circulated that 200 men were arming themselves to oppose the resulting trials. New Hampshire authorities later sought to ease tensions by granting amnesty to the rebellious regions in 1784, under the state's new constitution. The conflict bred a lasting mistrust, however, between the leaders of Dartmouth College and the rest of the state, perhaps influencing the state's decision decades later to attempt to bring the college under state control. https://www.nhhistory.org/Timeline?id=1782.1   Suggestions/Feedback Do you have a topic that you would like for us to discuss?
