In academia, most scientists publish their ideas and stop there. But if we want our breakthroughs to benefit society, we have to take it a step further. So, what does it look like to commercialize scientific research? What mindset do academics need to work at the intersection of science and industry? Ben Lamm has a career of building successful deep tech businesses, and George Church has a career of commercializing academic science. Together, they are the cofounders of Colossal, a breakthrough bioscience and genetic engineering company that is pioneering animal de-extinction technology to restore lost ecosystems for a healthier planet. On this episode of Boost VC, Ben and George join us to explain how bringing back the woolly mammoth addresses climate change and explore their approach to the ethical concerns around de-extinction. They discuss the benefits of Colossal technology beyond Arctic rewilding, describing how their work helps endangered animals and promotes conservation. Chris Tacke is an industry leader in managed application development for industrial process control, medical, telematics, and just about any other embedded industry. Chris specializes in Windows CE and the .NET Compact Framework, and mobile and embedded device application development. Topics of Discussion: [2:22] Fun fact! Chris got a degree in Geology long ago, and his first job was doing seismic work and hand-analyzing a lot of data. Chris talks about his first foray into programming, a job in Excel, writing VBA macros to analyze the data. [4:08] Chris walks us through a job at Microsoft by way of a horse race in Virginia during the .com boom. After the .com crash, he worked at a company that made single board computers and moved to be an engineering manager for the Windows CE department. He was independent for 20+ years before joining Hypergiant, and then Wilderness Labs came onto his radar. [6:42] Chris is the owner of the Meadow Core pieces and does a fair bit of the driver development. [8:49] How does the Jetson Nano compare to Raspberry Pi? [13:47] Chris talks about the first goal to run on modern.net. [16:41] What is the vision now to say that we need to do this on Linux? [21:33] Is this the same vision as Maui, to run anywhere embedded? [23:38] How does it impact the process of building, test suites, and different test environments? [24:18] Chris talks about Meadow Test Suite, which has the goal to deploy binaries down to a device and find tests that look just like an xUnit test that can then talk to hardware. [30:56] This totally redefines the term of the “full-stack” developer. [31:12] What can people utilize today, and what is the DevOps chain Chris and his team are using? Kristina Libby is acting like a 4-year old — and she couldn't be happier about it. In a world where we often convince ourselves we can't do certain things, Libby is giving herself permission to follow the weird impulses that pop into her brain, much like a child would. Even though this fresh approach to life came to her unexpectedly, Libby discovered she is becoming the truest version of herself. At Traction on Demand, the mantra “Be Four Forever” is used often. After all, the brain of a 4-year old is a magical place, full of curiosity and wonder, and perceives life with an unbiased perspective. In the world of business, this mindset benefits innovation and progress. Libby is CMO at Hypergiant, a company proving that artificial intelligence is shaping our future for the better. And how does machine learning software develop? It absorbs as much information it can with an unbiased perspective, much like — you guessed it — a 4-year old. No stranger to childlike wonder, Tanya Jarrett is the Chief People Officer at Traction on Demand. Jarrett is someone who asks a lot of questions: in particular, “why?” Her story shows how curiosity led her places she never would've imagined — and how a curious mind should never be underestimated. In this episode, you'll hear how Libby's breathtaking journey after being forced to reboot her life proves keeping an open mind — even when your world feels like it is closing in around you — is the key to harnessing your true potential. This podcast is produced in conjunction with SUSEIn this episode of the Tech Means Business podcast we look at the edge, and really dig into how it's best defined and used by organizations. Edge computing environments are often characterized by the prevalence of IoT or IIoT devices, so any discussion about edge usually involves talking about app deployment on smaller, less powerful hardware. That makes the edge the perfect place for containerized microservices -- containers are fast to deploy and lightweight, so if DevOps is going to take advantage of edge's capabilities, it's here where folks have to concentrate. Our guest is Vishal Ghariwala, CTO for APJ and Greater China, from SUSE, who takes us through the edge computing landscape, explains the issues, and talks about how dedicated Edge technologies from SUSE like K3s, Rancher and SLE Micro can be leveraged to best effect. If you've ever wondered about how best to develop, deploy, maintain and manage container-based apps and services in edge settings, this podcast has the answers you need. And while we might think "heavy industry," e.g. manufacturing, whenever IIoT gets a mention, Vishal also talks about other verticals using these types of technologies to deploy agile apps, and how any deployment will fit into existing structures in the enterprise at large.Less practically, but a deal more glamorous, we also learn that SUSE's container tech is being used by batteries of satellites: it's SUSE in space!Read more about, SUSE Edge, SLE Micro, K3s and Rancher.Vishal is here on LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/vishalghariwala/Elektrobit partnership:https://www.suse.com/c/new-horizons-for-suse-and-elektrobit-partnership-in-automotive/Hypergiant success story:https://www.suse.com/success/hypergiant/Joe can be found orbiting here:https://www.linkedin.com/in/josephedwardgreen/

Chances are, you have seen the night sky before. Thou looketh to the Heavens: what does thou see? It is likely that one sees a few, or a few thousand, glimmering stars, some shining brighter than others; some orange, red, blue; some massive, some small; some luminous, some dim. It is likely that you have seen at least a somewhat dark night sky sometime in your past life, as I assume most of you have gone camping or hiking or biking, sometimes, or often if you are similar to I, during the night. In the Northern winter, the night sky is bedazzling your eyes with thousands of points of beauty, as it does in the summer. In the Northern winter, the brightest of the stars show their brilliance and luminance to our eyes; Sirius, Regulus, Adhara, Betelgeuse, Rigel, Aldebaran, Procyon, Capella, Bellatrix, Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka all showcase their complexion during these months. In the Northern summer, the Milky Way, the dense band of stars that appears to us as a glimmering wave of milk, conveys its own particular brilliance. In the Northern summer, the brilliantly-lit Deneb, Vega, Altair, Antares, Arcturus, Sadr, and the great stars of Sagittarius and Ursa Major dominate our vision. Upon seeing this prodigious assemblage of nuclear fusion, our brains begin to fail to understand the immensity of the universe in which we live. Even when gazing upon the meager 3,000 visible stars in our night sky, we are humbled by the formidable collection which exists above our heads. This episode and the subsequent episode delves deep into the great stellar immensities lying below our noses. In this episode of Spill It guest Nicole Loher goes through her career trajectory that has included working for some of the biggest brands in fashion, beauty, and tech. If you grew up on Tumblr in the early aughts it is safe to say you probably know or have at least heard of this week's guest Nicole Loher. Nicole's trajectory has been anything but typical and she breaks down the ways in which she strategically chose the roles and companies that would get her to where she wanted to be. From her time at FIT where she held down 8 internships for some of today's biggest brands like Warby Parker and Fashion Designer Nanette Lapore, to corporate gigs like Nars and Christian Louboutin. As someone who started out in the fashion world and pivoted to social media and brand strategy, Nicole also gives us insight into what it looks like to be an adjunct professor at NYU and creating an accredited certificate that she helped create for NYU's first social media curriculum. As is life, Nicole's life and career trajectory has been affected by a series of choices. The choice that one might say has had the biggest impact on Nicole was her time at the environmentally-conscious Hypergiant which helped solidify her plan for the future and committing to fighting the environmental and climate change crisis by getting her masters in Climate Change and Public Policy at Columbia University. Nicole's long-term plan is to become a CMO/C-suite level at a green tech company where she can bring her long honed strategy skills and environmental school studies to enact long-term change. Gary Gattis spent his entire career making video games, AI/Space was a late life industry transition. Why? When Gary decided it was time to move into the next adventure in his professional career, he asked everyone (yes, everyone) two important questions that led him to Hypergiant, where Gary and the team believes that AI is essential to secure our place in the universe via space exploration. “We started looking at ground control, and saw there was a lot of room for disruption.”- Gary Gattis on Casual Space Podcast When it was time to move into the next chapter of Gary’s professional journey, he went to friends and colleagues and asked everyone two questions: “1. What’s the coolest stuff going on in the world, and 2. If you weren’t doing what you were doing, what WOULD you be doing? That was a fascinating time in my life! I was doing 10+ coffee/ lunches a week! It was full time!” “I call it my journey of discernment. Really, three things came out of it. The first was a deeper connection to myself. I was talking to people I’ve known 20-30 years ago- old friends. Second, I got to see myself through other people’s eyes. Third, it really helped me hone my personal brand. It took a lot of external conversations for me to validate [what my personal brand was] through other people. It was a great experience for me, and I highly recommend this experience.” -Gary Oh by the way, He’s been to Space Force HQ. About Gary Gattis: Gary is an Interdisciplinary leader guiding people and process to improve our world. Specialties include growth, operations, and management. Founded several companies at the intersection of technology and design, led extremely diverse teams to success.Currently CEO for Hypergiant Galactic Systems, focussed on integrating Artificial Intelligence with the commercialization of Space. More about Gary and his work and career at: https://www.linkedin.com/in/garygattis/ Interesting stuff about Hypergiant from Texas Monthly: Hypergiant aims to help its clients gather and analyze vast amounts of data. You’re working on improving the sensory perception of machines. You’re aiming to launch a network of small satellites gathering data from above. And you’re looking to empower “smart cities,” stitching together data from cameras that are increasingly everywhere Hypergiant does sell—artificial intelligence-enabled software and hardware—and you’ll appreciate Lamm’s problem. Even many people lacking in technological savvy have heard of AI as a force with the potential to shape much of humanity’s future—for better or worse. Some of those people look to get into business with Hypergiant without any real idea of what it is they’re buying. They just know they want some. “It’s like the most addictive drug that no one’s ever had,” says Lamm, who serves as the company’s CEO.

In this episode of The Tony Robbins Podcast, our host Ana is diving into artificial intelligence and machine learning - phrases that are getting tossed around a lot these days - but are shrouded in mystery and misunderstanding. Helping demystify the hype and break down the pragmatic benefits of AI is Ben Lamm. Ben is the CEO of Hypergiant - a Dallas-based startup that Tony himself invested in! They’re working with big brands and businesses to bring in technology to solve real business problems. For example, Hypergiant recently teamed up with TGI Friday’s to create an AI-powered mixologist, appropriately dubbed Flanagan. Flanagan offers the customers the experience of personalized drink recommendations while simultaneously collecting more data about their preferences. It’s a win-win that enhances customer connection, and ultimately, customer loyalty. Ana talks with Ben about these types of practical applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning, and we explore other opportunities for businesses to leverage the tech to best meet their customers’ needs. Because most industries are using outdated practices. And as we enter this new era of AI solutions, it’s time to initiate change and encourage your team to start thinking forward.
