If Marvel and DC are the big 2 and Superman and Spidey represent them then Image Comics is certainly number 3 and representing them would most certainly be Todd McFarlanes' 1992 creation SPAWN. The story of government assassin Al Simmons and his deal with the devil that made him into Hellspawn caught the eye of HBO Animation in the late 90s. Tonight we take a look at season 1 so turn out your lights!!
Thanks to iFanboy Patrons, it's Talksplode time. Jason Fabok's first published work was drawing Superman/Batman at DC Comics, before becoming a fan favorite artist on a certain dark knight. Then after over a decade at the top of the DC heap, he went all in on creator owned work, joining Geoff Johns to introduce the new series, Rook: Exodus, from their Ghost Machine publisher, through Image Comics. Jason talks with Josh about his journey into comics, a crucial mentor, and his transition away from DC, among other things. Comics writer and cartoonist Kyle Starks joins me to talk about his brand-new Image Comics series, Wrestle Heist — a wild blend of pro-wrestling spectacle and fast-paced crime caper energy. We get into how the idea came together, his trademark mix of humor and heartfelt chaos, and what makes this book stand apart from his previous creator-owned hits.Kyle also discusses his recent work writing Peacemaker for DC's Black Label, sharing how he brought his offbeat humor and emotional grit to one of DC's most unpredictable antiheroes. He teases his upcoming Vertigo series debuting next year, which pushes him into darker, more character-driven territory while still keeping his sharp dialogue and storytelling muscle.Plus, we dig into the next wave of creator-owned projects he's got cooking — from new collaborations to long-planned solo works that show just how versatile and fearless he's become as a writer.
In Part 1 of this in-depth conversation, writer B. Clay Moore reflects on his early years as the marketing director at Image Comics during the early 2000s — a pivotal era when the company was reinventing itself around a new wave of creator-owned talent.Moore discusses working behind the scenes with emerging voices like Rick Remender and Jonathan Hickman, and how Image's independent spirit encouraged creators to take bold storytelling risks that reshaped the comics landscape. Moore also dives into the creation of his breakout series Hawaiian Dick, co-created with artist Steven Griffin — a genre-blending mix of crime noir, tiki-era cool, and supernatural mystery that became a critical and cult favorite for Image. He shares how the concept was born, how he and Griffin developed its striking visual tone, and how the book stood out in an industry dominated by superhero titles. The discussion rounds out with Moore recalling his collaboration with Tony Harris at DC Comics on the acclaimed JSA: The Liberty Files — a gritty espionage reimagining of the Justice Society set during World War II — and their later follow-up project, The Whistling Skull, a pulpy, post-war adventure that expanded their unique corner of the DC Universe.Part 2 airs tomorrow, covering more on Moore's creative process, later volumes of Hawaiian Dick, and his perspective on the modern state of creator-owned comics.
In this 2021 Word Balloon conversation, acclaimed writer Ed Brubaker joins John Siuntres to discuss his Eisner-winning crime graphic novel Destroy All Monsters, the third volume in the Reckless series created with longtime collaborator Sean Phillips. Brubaker explains how Destroy All Monsters expands the world of 1980s Los Angeles through the eyes of Ethan Reckless, the one-man fixer caught between Hollywood corruption, fading ideals, and his own haunted past.He talks about how the story draws from the noir tradition of Ross Macdonald and the downbeat realism of 1970s thrillers — but told through the sleek, cinematic storytelling he and Phillips have perfected. The conversation explores how the Reckless books evolved out of Criminal, Fatale, and Kill or Be Killed, why he and Phillips pivoted to the original graphic novel format, and how working with Sean's son Jacob Phillips for color and design gave the series a distinctive look and rhythm.Brubaker also opens up about his creative process, writing discipline, and the freedom of publishing through Image Comics, where he and Phillips maintain full ownership and complete artistic control. It's a candid, craft-focused talk with one of comics' finest storytellers — part writing masterclass, part look inside modern noir's most successful creative partnership.

Every creative person has that one work their audience considers the ultimate creation—their masterpiece. On today's pod, we had a blast digging into some of our favorite comic creators' defining works. We talk about legends like Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, and Neal Adams, along with later giants like Frank Miller, Bill Sienkiewicz, Mike Mignola, and many more. Is a masterpiece a single issue, an iconic run, a stretch of covers, or even one unforgettable cover? Is it the creation of an iconic character like Thanos or Deadpool? Or could it be something beyond the page, such as the launch of Image Comics and Milestone Media? The conversation runs long and goes in all kinds of directions (as you might expect), but one thing's for sure—the opinions fly fast and furious!

Duncan MacKenzie and Ryan Peter Miller drive up to the Dunn Museum in Libertyville, IL to talk with legendary comics painter Alex Ross. Known for Marvels, Kingdom Come, and decades of redefining superhero realism, Ross reflects on his career trajectory, his education at the American Academy of Art, his influences (from Neal Adams to Dave McKean), his early breaks with Now Comics and Leo Burnett storyboarding, and his transition into large-scale mural projects for Marvel and DC. The conversation ranges from comics history, realism in superhero depictions, variant cover economics, the physicality of superheroes, to America's appetite for dystopian narratives versus a return to the “pure Superman.” Ross is candid, funny, and deeply reflective about the comics medium, painting, and storytelling. Today, we explore the career of Sweeney Boo, from studying graphic design in southwest France to becoming a sought-after artist and writer in mainstream comics. We discuss her early work as a letterer and colorist for French publishers and her bold decision to move to Canada in 2015 to pursue her comic book dreams. We then get into her deeply personal work on Eat, and Love Yourself, which she launched via Kickstarter to tackle subjects like eating disorders, depression, and body dysmorphia, her mainstream debut in Image Comics' Rat Queens, and her defining run on Harley Quinn with writer Tini Howard. There's also her Marvel work, including costume designs for Marvel Rising and Marvel Action: Captain Marvel, as well as her more recent creator-owned Over My Dead Body graphic novel. Following the triumph of Marvels and from the ashes of a proposed sequel that fell apart, Kurt Busiek launched Astro City with Brent Anderson on interior art and Marvels collaborator Alex Ross on covers and character designs. On the series' 30th anniversary, we look at the complicated development of the series and its first six stories. We also ask some conceptual questions. Should Astro City be considered part of the larger superhero deconstructionist movement of the Iron Age, or something else entirely? Are the series' familiar-but-different superheroes “analogues” or “archetypes”? Is there such a thing as including too many Easter eggs? And what's the difference between “superheroes in the real world” and Astro City?Discussed in this episode: the first volume of Kurt Busiek's Astro City #1-6, published by Image Comics (as originally reprinted in the Life in the Big City trade paperback and other subsequent collected editions)The municipality of Astro City is probably supported with robust and progressive property taxes, but our podcast relies on listener support at patreon.com/ironageofcomics

Kelly, as Evel Knievel's son and brand manager, what does it mean to you to see your father's legacy brought to life in his first-ever full-length comic series?2. Rylend, what drew you to Evel Knievel as a character for a comic, and how did you approach blending historical fact with fictional storytelling?3. The series is set during the lead-up to the Caesars Palace fountain jump. How did you decide which real-life events to keep and which moments to fictionalize?4. For readers who may not be familiar with Evel beyond the stunts, what do you hope The Last Gladiator will teach them about who he was as a person?5. The comic promises high-octane action and a modern-day Western feel. Can you walk us through the visual and narrative choices that give the series that unique tone?6. Evel Knievel has inspired movies, documentaries, and countless imitators. What makes comics the right medium to tell this particular story?7. (Fun) If Evel Knievel were still at it today, what stunt do you think he'd attempt just to outdo himself — and how would you put it in the comic?
In this candid second half of our talk, Greg Rucka opens up about why he walked away from DC Comics during earlier eras, and how those frustrations with co-writers and editors caused him to have serious personal issues and leave in digust to focus on creator owned projects. But it's not all doom and gloom — Greg is genuinely excited about his latest DC work, the upcoming Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Justice League, with his usual collaborator Nicola Scott. Greg makes it clear how much better the current editorial regime feels, compared to the past.We also dive into Greg's prose side, where he's just finished a brand-new Atticus Kodiak novel ready to hit publishers, and he teases the possibility of new Queen & Country stories on the horizon. He addresses the current state of the book market. On top of that,Greg shares fresh updates on Lazarus, his long-running Image Comics series with Michael Lark, and reflects on how that world continues to devolve. It's a mix of hard truths, exciting projects, and the kind of thoughtful perspective you only get from a creator like Greg Rucka and a show like Word Balloon
